Was there any doubt?

Only one game was played this past weekend in the Premier Division of the VMSL. In fact, very few games were played in the other divisions as the various districts prematurely closed fields that would probably have been playable on Saturday and Sunday. In any case, the only Premier Division game played took place on Sunday at Kinsman Stadium between Pegasus FC and the visiting Surrey United. Both teams are sitting near the top of their respective groups and the calibre of play certainly did not disappoint the numerous spectators--most of them players from the other 'non-playing' VMSL teams. Ironically, these same two teams played in the Premier Division final at the end of last season and at the same venue--and with basically the same result. In fact, last season's final resulted in a 2-1 victory for Surrey United, while this time Surrey came out on top by a 3-2 score.

The game had plenty of spirited action with a high degree of intensity. Referee Jose` Branco should be congratulated for allowing the match to flow and for recognizing the nature of a hard-fought VMSL game, a game that was played in good spirit between two competitive teams. Surrey United dictated most of the early play but were denied goals on two occasions by newly-signed Pegasus goalkeeper Luca Dalla Pace. His first brilliant save came off a header by Darren Villars. His second was an acrobatic stop on another header, this one by Graeme Magowan. Ten minutes before the end of the first half, United deservedly took the lead when captain Joe Deacon volleyed home a cleverly-flighted free kick from fellow midfielder Craig Dalrymple.

Pegasus came furiously out of the blocks to open the second half but fell behind another goal when Surrey striker Dave Hleucka headed home Martin Schaefer's cross. Once again, however, Pegasus rallied strongly and quickly tied the game on two superb goals. First, Mike Dodd headed home a wickedly deceiving Paul Dailly corner kick and then Gavin Frey hit a cracker from 20 metres, a drive that hit the post before flying into the net. Somehow, Surrey United was able to regroup and, with 10 minutes remaining in the match, Shawn Blakeway fired home the winner from close range--after two earlier efforts had been blocked on the goal line in a hectic scramble. Not only did Blakeway's goal give his team the well-deserved victory, it also put him in first place in the race for the GOLDEN BOOT AWARD. Both teams played extremely well but special mention must be made of Surrey defender Graeme Magowan who was a tower of strength throughout the contest. The Pegasus loss, their third in a row, leaves them tied for first place in Group 'A' with Sporting Club and Burnaby Canadians. Sporting Club, however, has the edge since they have a game in hand. In Group 'B', Surrey United is still in third place with no chance of catching first place Westside Rino, but only 2 points behind ICSF Inter.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED for its outstanding performance in defeating Pegasus in a rematch of last season's Premier Division final.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: GRAEME MAGOWAN (of Surrey United) for his brilliant defensive work in his team's victory over Pegasus.

Azzi is right on the Branco shout, he let us play and was a non factor. Which a ref should be.

WEEK #20 -- 2003-02-11

The first round of the Imperial Cup was played this past weekend with most games ending with predictable results. Perhaps the most exciting match of all was the one played on Sunday at McNair School in Richmond when two newly-promoted first division teams--Indo FC and Clan Alumni--entertained the numerous spectators for almost two hours. The SFU grads took a well-deserved lead midway through the first half when Kevin Crouch headed home a brilliant cross from Romeo Cuter. As the game went on, however, Indo FC got stronger and stronger and eventually got the tying goal from Karm Lidder. The game was settled late in the second overtime period when Pammi Birring scored for Indo FC. Defensively, Todd Gronland was outstanding for Indo FC, while former Whitecap goalkeeper Didar Sandhu kept his team in the match throughout the first half when Clan Alumni exerted a great deal of pressure. As a result of the victory, Indo FC now faces Surrey United in the next round of the cup. In fact, Surrey United escaped a real scare by edging the recently-relegated Croatia SC by a 1-0 margin in a very closely contested match held on Sunday at Hillcrest Park. Goalscoring opportunities were at a premium in this match as both defences dominated throughout the contest. Newly-signed Croatian forward Johnny Sulentic set up Joe Maras in the first minute of the game. Unfortunately for the snake-bitten Croatians Maras' shot was saved brilliantly by another former Whitecap, Surrey goalkeeper Drew Smiley. United scored the eventual winner midway through the first half when Greg Brisbon won possession in the Croatian half of the field, rounded to defenders and placed a low shot into the corner of the net from 15 metres out. In the second half Croatia hit the post, while Surrey United squandered a penalty kick to keep the score at 1-0.

Also at Hillcrest Park on Sunday, Westside Rino easily disposed of first division Hagar's by a convincing 5-0 margin. Even though the first half ended 1-0, the result was never in doubt as the game was played almost entirely in the Hagar's half of the field. In the second half Rino's team--with the assistance of four young substitutes--turned up the volume and scored 4 unanswered goals. Young Alex Kosanin and veterans Craig Chiasson, Jason Small, Oliver Heald, and Markus Felderer scored the Westside goals, while veteran goalkeeper Mike Wicken shared the shutout with young Jarret Christie. As a result of the victory, the heavily-favoured Westside team now takes on the Metro-Ford Wolves who defeated the Deep Cove Royals at McCartney Park by a 3-0 score. After a scoreless, and evenly played first half, the Wolves took over the reins of the match in the second half and were eventually rewarded with 3 rather late goals. A great cross from Danny Jones and an even better header by Whitecap Andrew Veer resulted in the first goal midway through the second half of play. Shortly thereafter, Veer scored the second goal on a fine individual effort and set up veteran Keith Izatt--in his first appearance of the season--for the final goal.

At the bottom end of the draw, one upset and one near upset took place. In fact, first division Firefighters eliminated premier division West Van Legion as a result of a hard-fought 2-1 overtime victory in a game played on Sunday at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver. Jesse Fetterley gave the home team the early lead but Whitecap Niall Thompson restored parity before the half time whistle. The winner came late in the second overtime period from the foot of young veteran Peter Bergholtz. Forward Niall Thompson had his best game of the season, while another Whitecap, Jeff Clarke, was a dominant force in the Firefighters' midfield. The Firemen will now take on the Khalsa 96ers who managed to scrape through with a 4-3 victory over Burnaby Canadians' reserve team. In fact, Khalsa had to come back from a 2-1 first half deficit to eventually win the game. Marcelo Giunto was once again the man of the match for Khalsa as he scored 3 brilliant goals--two on full volleys and the third on a great header. Chris Verdi scored what proved to be the winner on a goalmouth scramble. Burnaby Canadians 'B' team replied with Tony Gallo, Bartos Bilicki, and Denny Karamessinis against the inexplicably short-handed 96ers.

In other matches, Pegasus FC had to rely on penalty kicks to defeat the upstart SportsTown FC after a 0-0 overtime draw. In a very lacklustre performance, Sporting Club needed two goals from Whitecap head coach Tony Fonseca and one from Paulo Almeida to take care of first division Grandview Lobbans by a 3-0 margin. In another premier division-first division match-up, the Sapperton Rovers defeated the Vancouver Olympics 3-1. Sapperton rebounded from a 1-0 halftime deficit to score 3 quick goals in the second half. Paul Favaro, Adamo Artuso, and Kent Waechter scored the Rovers' goals. ICSF Inter had an easy time of it in disposing of the relegated Argentina Athletics by a 5-0 margin. Benji Hayford, Steve Kindel, Chris Clarke, Andrew Coraza, and Tony Mobilio scored for the winners.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: INDO FC for its outstanding come-from-behind 1-0 victory over Clan Alumni in a match between two newly-promoted teams.

"PAZZO" PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: MARCELO GIUNTO, of the Khalsa 96ers, for his amazing hat-trick against Burnaby Canadians 'B' and ANDREW VEER, of the Metro-Ford Wolves, for his magnificent performance (two goals and an assist) in his team's 3-0 victory over the Deep Cove Royals. Giunto and Veer will each receive a prize of a pizza for two, courtesy of PAZZO Trattoria and Lounge. The prize is valid anytime except for Mondays.

Tell me how it's a come from behind victory at 1- Nil? It's moot I guess, considering the score was 2-1.

Only a handful of games were played this past weekend due to the total, and premature, closures of Vancouver fields. Therefore, two important Imperial Cup games--Westside Rino vs AC Milan and Sporting Club vs Richmond United--will have to be played this coming weekend. Despite Vancouver's horrendous decision to close all its fields, two excellent Imperial Cup games, and one vital Premier Division league game were played.

On Saturday, at Riverway Park in Burnaby, the first division Firefighters pulled off another upset as they eliminated the premier division Burnaby Canadians from further Imperial Cup play. As a result of the victory, the Firefighters have now reached the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup and, even more importantly, have gained a spot in the Province Cup. Pretty good for a first division team! In any case, the Canadians came out of the gate with a burst of speed and gained an early 1-0 lead when Firefighters' forward, and recently signed Whitecap, Niall Thompson was uncharacteristically caught in his own penalty box where he inadvertently scored in his own net! Later in the first half, at around the 30th minute mark, Peter Bergholz equalized on a goal mouth scramble. The second half told a different story as the Firemen--led by man-of-the-match Jeff Skinner-- had most of the possession and squandered 2 glorious goal scoring chances. On another occasion, Burnaby's goalkeeper Cory Breure made a sensational save to keep the score tied. Nevertheless, the game ended in a 1-1 tie and, after overtime could not produce a winner, the result had to be decided by penalty kicks. In the end, after each team took 7 shots, the Firefighters prevailed by a 6-5 score.

The Firemen will now take on Pegasus FC in one semi-final since Pegasus triumphed over the unpredictable Surrey United by a 3-1 score in a match played on Sunday at Kinsman Stadium in front of at least 300 spectators. Pegasus got an early goal from Mike Dodd on a vicious left-footed half-volley from a difficult angle. A red card to Surrey's Clayton Dobbin midway through the second half spelled doom for the Surrey team as they found themselves not only a goal down, but also short-handed. Pegasus quickly added to their lead on a brilliant bicycle kick shot from Randy Celebrini from a corner kick by Whitecap Paul Dailly. Most observers would agree that Celebrini's goal is one of the most spectacular seen in this part of the world. Surrey got back into the game with about 5 minutes remaining as they converted a penalty kick awarded when David Hleucka was pulled down by Pegasus goalkeeper Sean Perry. Shortly thereafter, Meysam Soltani restored the 2-goal lead with a blast from 20 metres out.

On Friday evening, at Port Moody's Town Centre, a very important Premier Division league game took place between the Khalsa 96ers and the Metro-Ford Wolves. Both teams desperately needed the victory to keep their hopes of entering the Province Cup alive. After a very entertaining and exciting 90 minutes of play, Khalsa prevailed by a 3-2 score. As a result of the loss, Metro-Ford is officially eliminated from the Province Cup competition. The Wolves took the early lead when Ken Strain converted a 3-way passing play involving Aaron Beattie and Whitecap Andrew Veer. Khalsa replied shortly thereafter when Matt Mori headed home a perfect cross from Mandla Sibiya. Moments later, Karam Takhar made a great run through the centre and, despite Metro-Ford's appeals for an offside, slotted home the go-ahead goal. Mori got the eventual winner early in the second half after a quick give-and-go with Marcelo Giunto. The Wolves would not be denied, however, and applied a lot of pressure for the remainder of the match. The were finally rewarded when defender Elliott Smith scored on a precise cross from Jamie Fletcher.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: FIREFIGHTERS for their second consecutive upset victory at the expense of a Premier Division team, the Burnaby Canadians. Last week the Firemen defeated the Khalsa 96ers.

Two things here, the league is now giving out Pizza for "PLAY" of the Week not "PLAYER", yes that was an extreme scissor-kick, but what did he do the rest of the game.

Plus, I don't think Randell eats Pizza if he is able to get that high off the ground, but I am sure that a few of the boys that play in the back line would have the Pizza Pie.
