Azzi with a Magic Piss-Take on Leitchy

"Brad Leitch, with the first (and perhaps last) goal of his long career"
Too funny, but I don't think Brad is being pushed out by younger talent at MF, he is one of thier stronger players, he just has to try and play 90.

WEEK #28 -- 2003-04-08
The Imperial Cup Final was played on Sunday, thanks to the availability of Newton Athletic Park's new Field Turf pitch. Once again, Kinsman Stadium was unplayable and the switch to Newton Athletic was unavoidable. Despite the change a large number of spectators, most of them disappointed Firemen fans, attended the final between Westside Rino and the Firefighters. The match was one of the best finals seen in recent memory as both teams took turns attacking and creating numerous scoring chances at both ends of the pitch. The final result, 1-0 in favour of Westside, was a fair one as the Premier Division team had an edge in possession and scoring chances. Westside's goal came from a set play as Craig Chiasson crossed a great in-swinging ball into the Firefighters' penalty area where Oliver Heald, once again being in the right place, headed home the winner. A few minutes earlier, Heald had a similar header stopped brilliantly by Firemen's (and Whitecaps) goalkeeper Mike Franks. Veteran defenders Boban Aleksic, Jason Small, Mike Mosher, and captain James Prescott were outstanding throughout the match containing Firemen's vaunted strikers. Young John Chou also had a brilliant game in the middle of the park as he combined with Heald in outplaying and outworking Firemen's Jeff Clarke and Niall Thompson. For the Firefighters, defender Jeff Skinner and goalkeeper Mike Franks were outstanding. It should be noted that Heald, Clarke, Thompson, and Skinner (as well as Franks) are not eligible to play in the Provincial Cup since they have signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Obviously, both VMSL teams will suffer substantial damage as a result of their departure.

In Premier Division action, ICSF Inter defeated AC Milan 4-1 in the Italy-derby played on Sunday at Adanac Park. The game was rather uneventful as neither team were very impressive. Andrew Corazza scored twice for Inter, while Joseph Marrello, and newly-married Sal Cuccione added singletons. David Rossi replied for AC Milan. It can now be confirmed that Surrey United's Shawn Blakeaway has won the coveted "GOLDEN BOOT AWARD" as the top goalscorer in the Premier Division. In fact, Blakeaway's only contender, Benji Hayford, was held scoreless against AC Milan.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Westside Rino for its very impressive 1-0 victory over the tough Firefighters in the IMPERIAL CUP final. This is Westside second consecutive victory of the prestigious trophy. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, managers, and administrators, but--most of all--to Rino Orsato whose dedication and love of the game have made him one of the most respected soccer people in the land.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: BOBAN ALEKSIC of Westside Rino for his impeccable performance in his team's Imperial Cup victory. Once a midfielder and now a defender, Aleksic was practically unbeatable in his defensive role. For his efforts, Aleksic will receive a gift certificate for PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. Well done, Boban!!!

indeed, well done boban. on a side note, who is this Jason Small kid? name keeps popping up for westide, but he doesn't even play for them.

WEEK #29 -- 2003-04-15

Out of the 8 VMSL participants in the Province Cup, only 4 survived the first round, while 4 others exited much earlier than they had hoped. In all fairness, 2 of the defeats came at the hands of other VMSL teams, leaving only 2 legitimate losses for our league.

The most impressive performance was once again provided by heavily-favoured Westside Rino who trounced fellow VMSL'ers Burnaby Canadians by an emphatic, and well-deserved, 3-0 score. The game, played at UBC's Todd Field, was never in doubt as Westside took the early lead when young veteran Colin Pettingale set up 'old' veteran Alex Percy with a great cross. Percy made no mistake and headed the ball into the back of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. The second half started with Westside once again in control. After Markus Felderer had hit the goal post with a cracking shot from 20 metres, Pettingale once again rose to the occasion to set up Craig Chiasson--yet another young veteran--for Westside's second goal. Late in the match, a 4-way passing play, involving Pettingale, Chiasson, Felderer, and Percy, resulted in the game's last goal as Percy easily tapped the ball into the Burnaby net. Rino's team now advances to the quarter-finals against fellow VMSL'ers Surrey United.

Surrey United gained a spot in the quarter-finals by defeating Vancouver Island's Gordon Head 2-1 in an overtime thriller played at Cloverdale Athletic Park. The Cloverdale-based team started the match strongly and, after a sustained period of pressure, deservedly took the lead when Todd Stauber cracked home a fierce drive from 20 metres. Midfielder Cory Janzen deserves a great deal of the credit for laying a perfect pass onto Stauber's path after having cleverly beaten two Victoria defenders. United missed two great chances to put the game out of reach when Janzen had a great shot saved by the Gordon Head goalkeeper and then GOLDEN BOOT AWARD winner Shawn Blakeway uncharacteristically squandered a breakaway opportunity. The missed chances proved costly as the visitors tied the game up late in the first half when Mike Purves headed home a well-taken free kick by Ralph Steiner. Surrey dominated the entire second half but found it impossible to get the winner in regulation time. Darren Villars missed two great chances and Todd Stauber had a penalty kick saved in the dying moments of the match. United finally got the winner early in the first overtime half when Shawn Blakeway set up left winger Clayton Dobbin who thumped a low left-foot shot from just inside the penalty area into the back of the net. Martin Foden's team now has the unenviable task of taking on the formidable Westside Rino in next week's quarter-finals.

On Saturday, at Newton Athletic's Field Turf (or is it Sprint Turf?), another highly successful VMSL team, Pegasus FC demolished the Vancouver Island league winners, Nanaimo, by a very clear-cut 4-1 margin. The first half provided little excitement as both teams exhibited tight marking tactics. The second half began with Pegasus exerting more pressure and finally getting the opening goal on a brilliantly-executed chip shot by Randy Celebrini. After Nanaimo had tied things up, Pegasus once again took control of the match and was rewarded when two former Whitecaps/86ers, Paul Dailly and Mike Dodd, combined for what proved to be the winning goal. On this occasion, Dailly was the provider and Dodd the finisher. Frank Lore and Rob Iorio finished the scoring for Pegasus with two excellent goals late in the match. The North Shore/Surrey team now takes on another Vancouver Island team, VanTreights, in the quarter-finals.

On Sunday, at Adanac Park, an all-VMSL match-up took place as ICSF Inter and the Khalsa 96ers battled for the entire 90 minutes in a very entertaining and exciting game. Inter's Scott Walters gave his team the first-half lead when he converted a free kick from well outside the penalty area. Khalsa's Parm Gill and Matt Mori came close to tying things up late in the first half but were unable to finish off what seemed to be easy scoring chances. The 96ers continued to press for the equalizer during the early part of the second half and were finally rewarded when former Whitecap Charles Gbeke converted a fine cross from Mike Brkich. Late in the match, after absorbing considerable Khalsa pressure, ICSF got the winner from Andrew Corazza. ICSF will now play the defending BC champions, Victoria Gorge, in the next round.

Sporting Club travelled to the unfriendly confines of Victoria for its first ever Province Cup game and, despite controlling most of the action and having many more goal-scoring opportunities, finally succumbed by a 1-0 score to last year's champions, Victoria Gorge. In the meantime, the Division 1 Firefighters, were eliminated from further Province Cup play when they dropped a 3-0 decision to North Delta.

In the Division 1 Cup final, the Norvan Saints made it look all too easy as they battered Norburn 7-0--not a good score for a final game! Rob D'Attilio and Simon Jeffries each scored twice for the winners, while 16-year old Taylor Boyes, Mark Krys, and James Wilton each notched a single marker. Another 16-year old, Tyler Mooi, registered the shutout in the Norvan goal.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ICSF INTER for its hard-fought 2-1 victory over Khalsa 96ers in an all-VMSL first round Province Cup match-up.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Young veteran COLIN PETTINGALE, of Westside Rino, for his superb performance in his team's demolition of the Burnaby Canadians. Pettingale set up all three goals in his team's 3-0 victory. For his efforts, Pettingale will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The pizza must be consumed on the premises and is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-05-11.

OUR FANS ARE REMINDED OF THE PREMIER DIVISION FINAL WHICH WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 2003 AT KINSMAN STADIUM BETWEEN SPORTING CLUB AND WESTSIDE RINO. KICK-OFF IS SLATED FOR 12 NOON.

Ask about Azzi's "Young Veteran Earlybird Special Menu" where players between the ages of 28-34 get %50 off between 3:30 and 4:15pm.

It is a superlative deal.

Who you Calling "Old", and How FAR is "Well" Out

"...young veteran Colin Pettingale set up 'old' veteran Alex Percy with a great cross. "

"Inter's Scott Walters gave his team the first-half lead when he converted a free kick from well outside the penalty area."

That shot was from 25 yards out at most, nothing WELL about it.

Pretty soon it will be just a faint memory, and you can tell your beautiful newborn it was just INSIDE the box....then your second child will hear " it was a goal mouth scramble" and finally, your grandchildren will hear about how it was a goal mouth scramble that you made four saves before your defender kicked it in....

HOS at least you can say you contributed to the game.....I could only watch.

WEEK #30 -- 2003-04-21

The VMSL took advantage of the Province Cup playdowns taking an Easter weekend break to play its Premier Division final. The match was played in front of numerous, and enthusiastic, spectators on Good Friday at Confederation Park at Carson Graham School in North Vancouver.Once again, the seemingly unbeatable Westside Rino prevailed, albeit by the narrowest of margins. The latest victim of Westside's supremacy was Sporting Club in its first final since its promotion to the Premier Division a couple of years ago. The final score of 1-0 in Westside's favour pretty well reflected the closeness of the match as both teams took turns attacking and creating goalscoring chances. In fact, Sporting Club had most of the play in the first half and could easily have taken the lead had it not squandered a couple of glorious opportunities. The most glaring of these saw a totally unmarked Tony Fonseca sail the ball over the crossbar from 10 metres out. As is often the case against a predominant team such as Westside, missed opportunities come back to haunt you and Sporting paid the heavy price for failing to take the early lead. In the second half, veteran Westside striker Alex Percy narrowly missed the net on a couple of dangerous headers as the more experienced westsiders started to take command of the match. Inevitably, Rino's team took the lead at about the 75th minute mark when veteran Steve Dickinson combined with young John Chou for the winner. Special mention should be made of Sporting goalkeeper Brian Brum who made some tremendous saves, particularly in the second half to keep his team in the game and of Westside midfielder Colin Pettingale who was absolutely phenomenal throughout the match. Pettingale was deservedly named the game's Most Valuable Player and received a gift certificate from SOCCERCITY for his efforts. All in all, it was an excellent match and a truly wonderful conclusion to a fine VMSL season. Westside has now won 2 of the 3 major titles: the Imperial Cup and the Premier Division championship. The only one remaining is the Province Cup.

Another rather important game was played this past weekend as Grandview Lobbans defeated Peg-Olys 1-0 to avoid relegation to the second division. The two penultimate teams in the first division had to play off to see which one of the them would join Shaheen FC and WFC Bimini's in Division 2. Lobbans' Arthur Dahl scored to lone goal of the match.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: WESTSIDE RINO for yet another excellent performance in defeating a very game and capable Sporting Club 1-0 to win the Premier Division championship.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: COLIN PETTINGALE, of Westside Rino, for his impeccable performance in his team's victory over Sporting Club. Pettingale, who also won 'Player of the Week' honours last week, will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The pizza must be consumed on the premises and is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-05-18.

WEEK #31 -- 2003-04-29

The Province Cup quarter-finals were played this past weekend with VMSL teams earning 3 of the 4 spots in the semi-finals. Surprisingly, all Vancouver Island teams--including defending champions Victoria Gorge--were eliminated from the competition. ICSF Inter managed to defeat the 2-time champions in what some people might consider an upset. However, the 3-1 score in favour of the VMSL team was an emphatic testimony to the superiority of the underdogs. The match, played on Sunday at Adanac Park, featured three brilliant goals from Andrew Corazza, Sal Cuccione, and Tino Cucca and some outstanding performances from defender Scott Walters, midfielder Chris Clarke, and forward Benji Hayford. The result was never in doubt as ICSF dominated proceedings from the start, scored two early goals, padded their margin with an early second half goal and coasted the rest of the way. Gorge looked anything like a defending Provincial Cup champion and was quite lucky to keep the score respectable. Inter will now play the Fraser Valley champions Peace Arch United in one of the semi-finals slated for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Chilliwack's new Grand Stand Complex. Judging by its recent performances, ICSF must be considered a heavy favourite to reach the final.

The other VMSL/VISL match-up, Pegasus FC struggled a bit in the first half but took over the reins of the match in the second half and eventually defeated Victoria Van Treights 3-1 to gain a spot in the semi-finals. Ryan Green--on a corner kick from Gavin Frey--, Mike Dodd--on a blast from outside the box--, and Laurent Scaligine--on a brilliant individual effort--scored in the second half to secure the well-earned victory. Pegasus now takes on Surrey United on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Grand Stand Complex in Chilliwack.

The match of the week, an all-VMSL affair, took place on Sunday at UBC's Todd Field where the heavily-favoured Westside Rino took on Surrey United. Rino's boys, after winning the Imperial Cup and the Premier Division championship were vying for the triple, a feat they accomplished a couple of years ago. It was not to be, however, since the upstart Cloverdale-based team fought tenaciously from the opening whistle to pull off a major upset. After a 1-1 overtime draw the game had to be settled on penalty kicks and Surrey's goalkeeper, Drew Smiley, performed brilliantly as he was able to save two Westside shots to lead his team to victory. Westside took the early lead when Steve Dickinson combined with Alex Percy to score the go-ahead goal. After some furious action lasting almost an hour, Surrey United was finally able to knot the score when Darren Villars set up Shawn Blakeway whose fierce drive was only partially saved by Westside's outstanding veteran goalkeeper, Mike Wickens. United's midfielder Cory Janzen pounced on the rebound and easily scored the equalizer. Several scoring opportunities from both sides failed to produce a winner in the overtime and the rest is history as Smiley emerged as the ultimate hero. Cory Janzen, Todd Stauber, and Clayton Dobbin scored Surrey's goals on penalty kicks to give their team the victory. Saturday's game between Surrey United and Pegasus FC--at Chilliwack's Grand Stand Complex--promises to be a classic!

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ICSF INTER for its "upset" 3-1 victory over defending (and two-time) Province Cup champions Victoria Gorge.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: DREW SMILEY of Surrey United for his superlative performance in his team's penalty kick upset victory over heavily-favoured Westide Rino. Smiley made numerous outstanding saves in regulation time and overtime and then saved TWO penalty kicks in the 'shootout'. For his efforts, Smiley will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The pizza must be consumed on the premises and is valid anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-05-25.

Back to back player o the week.

WEEK #32 -- 2003-05-06

VMSL teams claimed all 4 spots in the Province Cup finals as both the VISL and the FVSL were unceremoniously bounced out of both the 'A' Cup and the Under 21 competition. The biggest winner was Surrey United, a club that has risen to great heights under the unparalleled leadership of president/manager/coach Martin Foden. In fact, Surrey United managed to gain a berth in the Open Men's final and in the Under 21 final. In the Open Men's semi-final, played on Saturday in Chilliwack, Surrey United handily defeated Pegasus FC by an emphatic 4-1 score. United got off to a quick start, opening the scoring after only 8 minutes when midfielder Cory Janzen pounced on a defensive miscue to beat Pegasus goalkeeper Steve London with a well-placed shot from close range. Pegasus battled back and threw everything at Surrey, forcing a series of 5 corners that the Surrey defenders somehow managed to scramble away. Pegasus deservedly tied up the game at the 13th minute mark when Laurent Scaligine took advantage of a goalmouth scramble to poke the ball into the net. Shortly before the halftime whistle, however, Surrey United reclaimed the lead on a well-executed counter attack that ended with Cory Janzen setting up an unmarked Clayton Dobbin for what proved to be the winning goal. In the second half, Surrey United exerted some constant pressure and was rewarded when Gareth Wilkshire scampered down the right wing and drove a hard, low cross into the Pegasus penalty area. Cory Janzen beat the Pegasus defenders to the ball and first-timed the ball into the net for the insurance marker. United rounded out the scoring near the end of the match when Clayton Dobbin returned Janzen's earlier favour by setting him up for his hat-trick.

The other semi-final, between ICSF Inter and Peace Arch United, was played on Sunday--also in Chilliwack. Inter squandered numerous goalscoring chances throughout the contest and, at the end, had to settle for a 2-1 overtime victory. In fact, Peace Arch came close to winning the match late in regulation time when ICSF defender--Frank Mollica--risked to lose his manhood when he was forced to block a potentially game-winning shot. Sal Cuccione and Joseph Marrello scored the Inter goals, with Marrello's "Golden Goal" coming early in the second overtime period. Moe Mahjoub scored the Peace Arch goal and almost assisted on what would have been the winner in overtime when he set up Brent Roberts whose shot barely missed the target. Immediately thereafter, as often happens, ICSF's lethal counter-attack resulted in Marrello's winning goal. Defensively, Inter's Tony Gaita and Frank Mollica were pillars of strength. Inter will now play Surrey United in the final, slated for Saturday, May 10 at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria. For the record, both teams played in Group 'A' of the VMSL Premier Division this past season with ICSF finishing second (behind Westside Rino) and Surrey United third. Inter has the edge over Surrey United in league play, winning one game (2-0) and tying the other (1-1).

The Under 21 semi-finals were played on Sunday with defending champions Surrey United defeating league winners Sikh Temple 3-2 in a nail-biting contest played at Cloverdale Athletic Park. Craig Riley scored two spectacular goals for United, while Jordan Gibbs got the eventual winner. Robbie Toor and Jerry Badyal replied for Sikh Temple. In the other semi-final, Westside Rino totally dominated proceedings against North Delta and was unlucky not to win by a much more decisive margin than the 2-0 score would indicate. Andrew Cooke and Cale Simpson scored the Westside goals. Westside now takes on Surrey United in the Under 21 Provincial Cup final, on Saturday, May 10 at Town Centre Stadium in Coquitlam. Kick-off is at 2:30 p.m.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED for its magnificent performance in defeating Pegasus FC 4-1 in the Province Cup semi-final.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CORY JANZEN of Surrey United for his splendid effort in his team's semi-final victory over Pegasus FC. Janzen scored three great goals and set up the other in a 4-1 victory. For his efforts Janzen will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The pizza must be consumed on the premises and may be claimed anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-06-03.
