Before the halftime whistle, yet another youngster

Now he's even accidentally taking the piss out of himself. I'd rather he beat Star pimp to death than the word youngster. Oops, can I say that?

Azzi got the report done early this week and well........................can anyone else tell me how a player that plays half a game can be named the POTW:confused: WEEK #14 -- 2003-12-08

The gap between the top and the bottom widened somewhat this past weekend as ICSF Inter rose to the top of the Group 'A' standings of the Premier Division by edging the last place Indo FC by a 2-1 score. The match, played on Sunday at Hastings Bowl, saw Indo FC take the lead late in the first half when Steve Grewal took advantage of a quickly-taken free kick. In the second half ICSF took control of the game and, had it not been for some superb goalkeeping by Didar Sandhu, could have won the game with relative ease. Sandhu, in fact, denied Kevin Crouch three glorious goalscoring chances. Later, Sandhu prevented Brian Van Schagen and Tino Cucca from scoring with two more outstanding saves. Finally, with 10 minutes remaining in the match, young Vaso Kos was able to convert a well-executed corner kick into the tying goal. Very late in the game, GOLDEN BOOT AWARD leader Brian Van Schagen fired home the winner and gave Inter the well-deserved victory after making a brilliant run. For Indo FC, Ricky Hikida and Dale Gill were outstanding in their defensive roles, while Paul Bahia played well in the midfield. The victory puts ICSF in first place, two points ahead of the idle Pegasus FC. Indo FC, on the other hand, are still in last place, albeit only one point behind SportsTown.

Also on Sunday, at Hillcrest Park, another very important Group 'A' match took place as the revitalized Westside Rino edged SportsTown Firemen 2-1 after an exciting 90 minutes of play. SportsTown had most of the play in the first half and deservedly took the lead when Chris Jarvie raced in all alone and beat veteran goalkeeper Mike Wicken with a clever shot. Westside tied the game up late in the first half when John Chou took advantage of a goalkeeping miscue to restore parity. The second half told a totally different story as Rino's team, with numerous youngsters in the lineup, took total control of the match. Despite the obvious supremacy, Westside was unable to create a whole lot of scoring chances until two substitutions were made. Young Adrian Kekec and Steve Dickinson came on the field midway through the second half and immediately made a huge difference. Finally, with about 10 minutes remaining, Steve Dickinson received a brilliant pass from Adrian Kekec before cleverly chipping the ball over the SportsTown goalkeeper. Young Steve Deblasio once again had a magical game in the Westside midfield, while veteran defenders Mike Mosher, Boban Aleksic, and James Prescott were virtually unbeatable. The victory takes Westside out of the relegation zone while the loss leaves SportsTown only one point ahead of last place Indo FC.

The other Group 'A' match took place on Friday evening at Port Moody Town Centre where the Metro-Ford Wolves and the Sapperton Rovers settled for a rather listless 0-0 tie. Metro-Ford defenders Justin Hebner, Brook Scott, Elliott Smith, and Steve Mitchell made young Mathew Bird's shutout rather easy. For the Rovers, defender Brian Donald was his usual hustling and bustling self, while Trevor Todd tried his best to generate some offence. Goalkeeper Kent Waechter got the shutout, his 6th of the season. The single point does not help either team a whole lot as both teams are still in the middle of the pack in the Group 'A' table.

In Group 'B' action, Khalsa Sporting Club came out of its slump by holding the defending Province Cup champions--and title contenders--Surrey United to a 1-1 draw. In actual fact, Khalsa had most of the play and probably deserved the entire 3 points as Surrey seemed to struggle after a rather lengthy lay-off. Surrey United took the lead early in the second half when an unidentified Khalsa defender inadvertently put the ball into his own net. In his defence, it must be mentioned that Surrey's Todd Stauber was putting a lot of pressure on the defender, pressure that forced the defender into the critical error. Khalsa came back very strongly and was finally rewarded when recently-transferred Gavin Williams took full advantage of a great run by Raju Chohan, beat the Surrey United goalkeeper to the ball and calmly deposited the ball in the net. Not a bad Premier Division debut for the 16-year old Williams! The result prevents Surrey United from climbing closer to the league-leading Sporting Club and leaves Khalsa in the middle of the Group 'B' table.

Also in Group 'B' action, Sporting Club was unable to widen its lead at the top of the table as a result of a 1-1 draw with the upstart Columbus FC. The beginning of the match saw Sporting take control as the young Columbus side was slow coming out of the gate. The first half ended 1-0 in Sporting's favour as young Steve Frazao scored his fourth goal of the season. It should be noted that, had it not been for the superlative goalkeeping of Columbus' Luca Dalla Pace, Sporting's halftime lead would have been more emphatic. As often happens, the second half told a different story as Columbus stepped up the pace and created numerous good scoring chances. The constant pressure finally paid off as two youngsters, Mike D'Agostino and Alex Elliott, combined to obtain the equalizer. D'Agostino chipped the ball over the outstretched arms of the Sporting goalkeeper and Elliott scored the easiest goal of his young career when he tapped the ball in the net from close range. The tie brought at least partial revenge to Columbus, since the first match of the season resulted in a decisive 5-1 victory for Sporting.

Finally, the Burnaby Canadians remained close to the top of the Group 'B' standings by clobbering the last place Clan Alumni 3-0 in a match played on Saturday at Burnaby Lake West. The Canadians took the lead midway through the first half on a goal by Chris Clemett and added to their margin with two late goals by playing-coach Steve Millar (on a brilliantly-taken penalty kick) and veteran Ryan McNab. The victory keeps Burnaby in contention for the Group 'B' title, while the loss puts Clan Alumni in an even more precarious position at the bottom of the table.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ICSF INTER for its outstanding performance in its 2-1 victory over Indo FC. The victory places Inter in first place in the Group 'A' standings, 2 points ahead of the idle Pegasus FC.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: STEVE DICKINSON of Westside Rino for his brilliant winning goal against SportsTown. The newly-signed Dickinson came on the field midway through the second half and provided the necessary offensive spark that his team so badly needed. His goal, an unbelievable chip shot from well outside the box, was simply icing on the cake! For his efforts, Dickinson wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-12-31. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

The newly-signed Dickinson came on the field midway through the second half

That's some fine math skills there Johnny P. Sounds more like he played a quarter of the match.

His goal, an unbelievable chip shot from well outside the box

Wouldn't a chipped goal from inside the box be more unbelievable?

Oh my god!

This is getting ridiculous...

Group A

1.young Vaso Kos was able to convert

2.and beat veteran goalkeeper Mike Wicken

3.numerous youngsters

4.Young Adrian Kekec and Steve Dickinson came on the field

5.Young Steve Deblasio once again had a magical game

6.while veteran defenders Mike Mosher, Boban Aleksic, and James Prescot

7.made young Mathew Bird's shutout rather easy.
Group B

8.the young Columbus side was slow coming out of the gate.

9.as young Steve Frazao scored his fourth goal of the season

10.as two youngsters, Mike D'Agostino and Alex Elliott

11.and veteran Ryan McNab.
He must be TTP now. He has to be.

It should be noted that, had it not been for the superlative goalkeeping of Columbus' Luca Dalla Pace, Sporting's halftime lead would have been more emphatic.
All he had to do was was call Zenga young or veteran and he would have had a Azzi hatrick. For that I give him the write up of the week. Azzi goes home with a brand new Thesaurus.

No team or player of the week but heres the report.

WEEK #15 -- 2003-12-15

Despite the bad weather and the closure of many fields, 5 out of the 7 Premier Division matches were played this past weekend. All the games were cross-over affairs and Group 'A' teams once again showed their superiority by winning two of them, losing one and tying the other two. The only Group 'B' victory occurred Friday evening at Newton Athletic Park when Columbus FC upset the heavily-favoured Pegasus FC by a narrow 2-1 margin. The match was played at a brisk pace as the young Columbus side took the game to the more experienced opponents right from the beginning. Columbus created numerous scoring chances early in the game but was unable to capitalize on any of them. As time went on, Pegasus began to elevate its game and began to control most of the play but, once again, without any success. The second half was more or less a repetition of the first as both teams took turns attacking and continued to create goal scoring chances. Midway through the second half, Columbus was awarded a penalty kick as young Mike D'Agostino--playing on a youth permit--was fouled in the 18-yard box. Another youngster, Andrew Proctor, stepped up and made no mistake as he placed his shot into the top right hand corner of the net. Shortly thereafter, one of the few veterans in the Columbus lineup--Dave Rossi--was substituted into the game and made an immediate impact as he converted a fine pass from Jordan Rosenlund into what proved to be the winning goa.. Late in the game, veteran Clark Brolly was able to bring Pegasus within reach of a draw, but it was too little, too late for the North Shore/Surrey team. As a result of the victory, Columbus is now 10 points ahead of last place Clan Alumni in the Group 'B' relegation battle, while Pegasus drops to third place in the Group 'A' standings.

On Sunday, at Cloverdate Athletic Park, Westside Rino--of Group 'A'-- won its third consecutive game by defeating Group 'B' contenders Surrey United by a rather decisive 2-0 margin. The Cloverdale team was rather unfortunate in the early going as one of its defenders--under some pressure by veteran Martin Best--cleared the ball unto the path of one of his team mates whose clearance ended up in the net. In the second half, Westside was unlucky not to score a couple of more goals before young Alex Kosanin entered the field as a substitute and immediately scored the insurance marker. Kosanin received a great pass from Steve Deblasio, beat a couple of Surrey defenders, walked in all alone and slotted home the all-important second goal. Defensively, veterans Jason Small, Boban Aleksic, and Mike Mosher were outstanding for Rino's team, while young veteran Aaron Richer made an impressive season debut. The victory puts Westside solidly in second place in Group 'A', while Surrey United remains 2 points behind the idle Sporting Club in the Group 'B' table.

Also on Sunday, at Adanac Park, ICSF Inter twice came back from one-goal deficits to eventually defeat the luckless Clan Alumni 4-2. Clan Alumni took the early lead on a goal by Romeo Cuter, but speedy Tino Cucca quickly restored parity when he received a great pass from Scott Walters, split the defence and calmly placed the ball into the Clan Alumni net. Clan regained the lead when Whitecap Tiernan King was left all alone on a corner kick and he had no difficulty in scoring the go-ahead goal. With virtually the last kick of the first half, Tino Cucca scored his second goal of the game--and sixth of the season--as he chipped the ball over the Clan Alumni goalkeeper. In the second half, Inter took the lead when Kevin Crouch scored his first goal of the season off a free kick by Frank Mollica. Joe Scigliano added the fourth goal late in the game on a fine individual effort. Defensively, Inter's Scott Spracklin, Tony Gaita, and Scott Walters were towers of strength, while Kevin Crouch and Tino Cucca had brilliant games up front. The victory solidifies ICSF's hold on first place in Group 'A', while Clan Alumni is now even deeper in the Group 'B' relegation zone.

and the remainder

On Saturday two cross-over matches were played, one at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster between the Sapperton Rovers and Trollers FC, and the other at Riverway Park between the Burnaby Canadians and Indo FC. Both games ended in 1-1 ties, results that don't help any of the four teams in their quests to win the championship or avoid relegation. The Sapperton - Trollers game was rather a dull affair with neither team showing a great deal of interest in gaining all 3 points. Both goals were scored on penalty kicks as James Possee scored in the first half for the Trollers, while veteran Paul Favaro equalized in the second half for Sapperton. The tie leaves both teams in the middle of the table in their respective groups. The other match, on the other hand, was a hard-fought affair with the Burnaby Canadians and Indo FC trying hard to win and thus improve their positions in the standings. Both goalkeepers, Burnaby's Cory Breure and Indo's Didar Sandhu, were brilliant throughout the exciting contest. Burnaby took the lead when playing-coach Steve Millar scored the opening goal midway through the first half, while Karm Lidder, on a penalty kick, tied things up for Indo FC early in the second half. The point does not help either team, as the Canadians are still in second place in the Group 'B' table, and Indo FC is still struggling in last place in Group 'A'.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: COLUMBUS FC for its outstanding performance in its 2-1 victory over the heavily-favoured Pegasus FC. The victory puts the very young Columbus team in a reasonably safe position near the bottom of the Group 'B' table, 10 points ahead of last place Clan Alumni in the 'relegation-avoidance' race.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: TINO CUCCA of ICSF Inter for his brilliant effort in his team's impressive 4-2 victory over Clan Alumni. The young and speedy Cucca scored two great goals and was a constant thorn on the side of the Clan's defenders. For his efforts, Cucca wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-01-07. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

Not a very long one but hey I've jumped the gun before, there might be more later...

After the cancellation of Week #16, the VMSL returned to action and virtually completed the entire Week #17 schedule. All Premier Division games were played, most of them ending with predictable results. Once again all the matches involved Group 'A' teams playing against Group 'B' teams as the regular season is drawing to a close. All the games were very important as numerous issues have yet to be decided, issues such as league championship, seeding for the Imperial Cup, prize money, Province Cup qualification, and, of course, relegation. None of these things were clearly settled this past weekend although the relegation of Clan Alumni to the first division is now a virtual certainty. In fact, to avoid relegation, Clan Alumni would have to win all their remaining 4 games and hope that either Columbus FC or Trollers FC will lose all their remaining matches.

Probably the most exciting and entertaining match played this past weekend featured the Group 'A' leaders, ICSF Inter, and the Group 'B' contenders, Burnaby Canadians. The game was played on Sunday at Adanac Park and saw both teams creating numerous scoring chances in their efforts to gain all 3 points. After a scoreless first half, Burnaby took the lead early in the second half when former ICSF player Gino Gaita scored the go-ahead goal. The goal seemed to serve as a wake-up call for Inter as they responded immediately with Joseph Marrello getting the equalizer. Quite late in the game ICSF got the winner from young Tino Cucca and the insurance marker from veteran Sal Cuccione to put the game out of reach for the somewhat unlucky Canadians. Scott Walters was outstanding on the backline for Inter, while forward Gino Gaita was a going concern throughout the match for the Canadians. The victory solidifies ICSF's hold on first place in Group 'A' as two of its nearest rivals (Westside Rino and Metro-Ford) were held to ties. Burnaby, on the other hand, slips further behind Group 'B' leaders Sporting Club, but still marginally ahead of Surrey United.

The whole story

Pegasus FC remained reasonably close to ICSF Inter with a rather unconvincing 2-1 victory over the Group 'B' last place team, Clan Alumni. The match, played on Sunday at Riverway Park in Burnaby, saw Pegasus take the early lead when Randy Celebrini first-timed a great cross from Paul Dailly into the back of the Clan Alumni net. The Clan worked hard for the remainder of the game in an attempt to get the equalizer and was finally rewarded at the 85th minute mark when Romeo Cuter unleashed a rocket from the edge of the box that cleanly beat Pegasus' fine goalkeeper Steve London. At this point, Clan Alumni threw all caution to the wind and, realizing that a single point was not sufficient, pressed hard for the winning goal. Pegasus took advantage of Clan's rather reckless gamble and got the winner in the dying moments of the match when Celebrini returned Dailly's favour by setting up the Vancouver Whitecap with an immaculate pass. Dailly easily converted the pass into the winning goal from inside the 6-yard box. The victory leaves Pegasus in second place in the Group 'A' standings, 5 points behind ICSF Inter, albeit with a game in hand. As far as the Clan is concerned, it appears that relegation to the first division is now a certainty.

Also on Sunday, at South Memorial Park in Vancouver, SportsTown Firemen obtained a very important 3 points in the Group 'A' battle as they defeated Surrey United 2-0. Surrey got off to a great start and could easily have been ahead by a couple of goals had it not been for the superlative goalkeeping of Mike Frank. But, as is often the case, SportsTown was able to score the opening goal against the run of play when Peter Berholz scored. From that point on it was all SportsTown as Surrey United seemed to fold its tent. Yet another Whitecap in the VMSL, Jeff Skinner, got the insurance marker late in the first half. The victory enables the Firemen to draw a breath of relief as they now seem to be out of relegation trouble, while Surrey United is still in search of first place in Group 'B'.

Sporting Club remained solidly in first place in Group 'B' with an exciting 3-1 victory over the luckless Indo FC. The match, played on Sunday at Hastings Bowl, saw Indo take a well-deserved early lead when Pammi Birring scored on a great header. The lead stood for the entire first half and for most of the second half, but a sudden surge by Sporting Club resulted in 3 late goals that left Indo in last place in Group 'B'. Mike Gomes scored the equalizer for Sporting Club, while player-of-the-match Paulo Almeida notched the winner and the insurance goal in the very late stages. The loss leaves Indo FC in last place in the Group 'A' table.

On Friday evening, at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster, Khalsa SC of Group 'B' defeated the Sapperton Rovers of Group 'B' by a narrow 1-0 margin. Veteran Jas Atwal converted an early penalty kick for the game's lone goal. The penalty kick was awared when Dave Mori--after making a great run into the Sapperton penalty area--was brought down by a Rovers' defender. The loss leaves Sapperton in a rather precarious position in the Group 'A' standings, only 2 points ahead of last place Indo FC. Also on Friday evening, at Port Moody Town Centre, the Metro-Ford Wolves took a 2-0 lead against a very young Columbus FC side but squandered the lead as Columbus came roaring back in the last 15 minutes to eventually get the equalizer. Donald Kambere gave Metro-Ford the lead late in the first half after Columbus' Alex Elliott had missed the opportunity to give his team the early lead when he shot a penalty kick well wide of the mark. Kevin Todd put the Wolves up by 2 goals when he scored on a wicked drive from well outside the penalty box. With about 10 minutes left in the match, Columbus was awarded yet another penalty kick which Cam Wilson converted with ease. In the dying moments of the game, Alex Elliott made up for his earlier error by heading home the tying goal on a great cross from Tyler Rosenlund. Finally, on Sunday at Hillcrest Park, Westside Rino and Trollers FC settled for a 1-1 draw. Westside took the lead in the first half when young Adrian Kekec scored. James Possee got the equalizer midway through the second half. Midfielder Steve DiBlasio was outstanding for Rino's team, while Ryan Carphin was very steady on the Trollers' back line.

This is a load of rubbish! How good could our start have been, if they scored in the 2nd and 9th minutes? Come to think of it we were tremendous in the first 59 seconds. Not to mention Jarvie shite the bed, as he does, on three separate break aways and semi break aways in the first 35 minutes. I almost sure Pete didn't score either. Walks told me his name, but I've lot it somewhere at the bottom of the beer cooler.

immaculate pass.

WEEK #18 -- 2004-01-26

Six out of the 7 Premier Division games were played this past weekend with the Friday evening encounter between Khalsa SC and Pegasus FC being the only game postponed due to the unplayability of Queen's Park Stadium. Once again Group 'A' teams demonstrated their superiority by winning 3 of the 6 cross-over games, tying 2 and losing only 1. Nothing much has been resolved at the top of the Group 'A' standings with 5 of the 7 teams still vying for the top spot, while at the bottom of the table any one of 6 teams could still be relegated!

On Friday evening, at Port Moody Town Centre, the Metro-Ford Wolves hosted Trollers FC in a match that was much more important to the Wolves than the West Van visitors. After a rather drab, and scoreless, opening 45 minutes, things sparked up in the second half as Metro-Ford began to apply some pressure in search of the winning goal. The Trollers defended well till the very end when Metro-Ford's Jamie Fletcher was tripped inside the box after making a very dangerous penetrating run. John Price converted the penalty kick to give the Wolves the 1-0 victory and a very important 3 points. Defensively, Justin Hebner played extremely well for Metro-Ford, while midfielder Richard Price was a going concern throughout the match. For the Trollers, newly signed Babak Shabazi worked hard in attempting to generate some offence. The victory puts the Wolves in third place in Group 'A', while the Trollers stay in 5th place in Group 'B'.

In the only game played on Saturday, at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster, the Sapperton Rovers fell to the ever-improving Burnaby Canadians by a 3-1 margin. The Canadians took advantage of some unusually sloppy Sapperton defending to take a 2-0 halftime lead. Gino Gaita scored the initial goal when he controlled a long, through pass by Steve Millar, beat a defender brilliantly and calmly deposited the ball behind Sapperton's goalkeeper. Late in the first half, Jeff Shea added to the Burnaby margin by scoring his first goal of the season. Playing-coach Steve Millar put the game out of reach by scoring Burnaby's third goal midway through the second half. A late marker by the Rovers' Mike Favaro ruined Cory Breure's shutout attempt. The loss leaves Sapperton in penultimate place in the Group 'A' standings, while the Canadians are still in second place in Group 'B'.

On Sunday, at Hillcrest Park, the superiority of Group 'A' teams was demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt when Group 'B' leaders Sporting Club fell by a decisive 2-0 score to Westside Rino. Both teams had a couple of scoring chances in the first half but neither of them were able to convert them. Early in the second half, Westside veteran Craig Chiasson converted a penalty kick that was awarded for a hand ball inside the penalty area. Soon thereafter, another Westside veteran, Markus Felderer, was ejected from the match for receiving his second caution. At this point, Sporting pushed forward trying to take advantage of its numerical superiority. As often happens, the tactic had a reverse effect as veteran Mike Mosher orchestrated a lethal counter attack that resulted in Westside's second goal. Mosher won the ball cleanly from a Sporting attacker, carried it forward before spotting a wide-open Steve Deblasio who easily scored the insurance marker. Despite the loss, Sporting Club remains in first place in Group 'B', while Rino's team is now in second place in Group 'A'.

Also on Sunday, at Hastings Bowl, SportsTown Firemen ended Columbus FC's 3-game unbeaten streak by defeating the youngest team in the league by a comfortable 2-0 margin. The very determined and physical SportsTown team proved to be far too much for the Columbus youngsters to handle and the final result could have been even more decisive. In fact, early in the game, SportsTown's Peter Bergholz was brought down inside the penalty area by Columbus' goalkeeper, Luca Dalla Pace. On the ensuing penalty kick, Chris Jarvie missed the net and the opportunity to give his team the lead. Bergholz made amends for his team mate shortly thereafter as he cleverly flicked the ball over Dalla Pace for the game's first goal. Bergholz added to the margin of victory by scoring the second goal on a brilliant header. Midfielder Justin Student and defender Rob Toth played superbly for the Firemen throughout the contest. The victory leaves the Firemen in 5th place in Group 'A', albeit with games in hand on the first 4 teams. Columbus FC, on the other hand, remains in 6th place in Group 'B'.

The other two matches ended in identical 1-1 draws as a pair of bottom feeders (Clan Alumni and Indo FC) could not settle their differences on Sunday at McNair School in Richmond, while at Adanac Park ICSF Inter and Surrey United also settled for an unsavoury point. In the Clan Alumni - Indo FC game, Clan took the lead on a goal by Whitecap Tiernan King midway through the second half, but allowed Indo FC back in the game with a late marker by Karm Lidder. The result leaves both teams in last place in their respective groups with Clan Alumni is now officially relegated to the first division. The Inter - Surrey game saw Tony Gaita miss a penalty kick early in the game after Tino Cucca had been brought down in the box by Surrey's Peter Hjorth. Surrey United took advantage of the ICSF mishap to take the lead midway through the first half when Gareth Wilkshire rose magnificently to head home a corner kick by Vince Stewart. At about the 80th minute mark Surrey United hit the cross bar on a great shot from Dave Hleucka, but, as luck would have it, Inter replied with a late equalizer on a blast by Joseph Marrello from well outside the penalty area. Despite the tie, Inter remains in first place in Group 'A', while Surrey United is still in 3rd place in Group 'B'.
