The other two matches ended in identical 1-1 draws as a pair of bottom feeders (Clan Alumni and Indo FC)
Azzi throwing daggers. Ouch.
Surrey United took advantage of the ICSF mishap to take the lead midway through the first half when Gareth Wilkshire rose magnificently to head home a corner kick by Vince Stewart.
How the hell is header off a corner a mishap?

thought for sure Westside would be team O the week. I hear they even signed young veteran Smallsy...

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: PETER BERHOLZ, of SportsTown Firemen, for his two brilliant goals in his team's excellent victory over Columbus FC.

I was sure Walks would get POTW for his work in the MF win over the Trolls

It's interesting how Azzi wrote that the Westside PK was awarded because of a hand ball in the box when Joe told me after the game that he called it because I apparently didn't jump for the ball and just two handed some guy in the back  . I guess like most people, he was surprised by the call and figured it must have been a handball. Also, Mosher didn't just cleanly check someone and then send the long ball for the second goal, he picked up the loose ball after a shot was blocked at the top of the 18 and then sent his man in on the breakaway. Mosh did play a great game, but where does he get this stuff?

WEEK #19 -- 2004-02-02

Very little was resolved in the Group 'A' standings of the Premier Division this past weekend as most teams beat their Group 'B' counterparts in cross-over matches. The one exception took place on Sunday at Newton Athletic Park when Group 'B' leaders, Sporting Club, disposed of the underachieving Pegasus FC by a classic 2-0 score. The margin of victory could have been even more emphatic had it not been for the crossbar getting in the way of a couple of shots by Mike Gomes and Jesse Arnett. Young Steve Frazao opened the scoring midway through the first half on a well-taken penalty kick, while veteran Steve Dormer scored late in the match to put a final nail in the Pegasus coffin. The victory marked the coaching debut of veteran player Carlos Batista who has recently taken over for Tony Francisco. It also solidifies Sporting's hold on first place in Group 'B', while the North Shore/Surrey team drops to 5th place in the very tight Group 'A' standings.

Also on Sunday, at Hillcrest Park, the Sapperton Rovers broke out of their mini-slump with a vengeance by clobbering a very young Columbus FC by a 5-1 margin. After a relatively competitive first half, the Rovers completely took over the reins of the match and totally outplayed their inexperienced opponents in the second half. Paul Favaro, Trevor Todd, Ted Ullrich, Shane Mummery, and recently-signed youngster Robert Sing scored the Sapperton goals, while Alex Elliott, with his 10th goal of the season, replied for Columbus. Trevor Todd's goal, the one that proved to be the winner, was a thing of beauty as he was set up magnificently by Luke Hogan. The victory allows the Rovers to stay one point ahead of Indo FC in the nerve-wrecking relegation-avoidance battle.

Group 'A' leaders, ICSF Inter, had a relatively easy time of it in defeating Trollers FC 2-0 in a match played on Sunday at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver. After a scoreless first half, a half which saw the visitors miss a couple of glorious scoring opportunities, Inter took control of the game and scored two great goals to seal the victory. First, Brian VanSchagen converted a brilliant cross from veteran Sal Cuccione into the game's first goal. Then, Kevin Crouch headed home the insurance marker on a well-executed corner kick by VanSchagen. As a result of his goal, VanSchagen remains in the running the the 'GOLDEN BOOT AWARD' with 10 goals. Defensively, ICSF's Vaso Kos, Scott Spracklin, and Tony Gaita were outstanding.

On Saturday evening, at Minoru Park in Richmond, SportsTown Firemen edged the never-say-die Clan Alumni 3-2 after a furious 90 minutes of non-stop action. The already relegated Clan took the early lead when Whitecap Tiernan King scored. Soon thereafter, another Whitecap, Jason Jordan, restored parity for the Firemen when he fired home his first goal of the season, albeit in his first appearance! In the second half, SportsTown took a 2-goal lead when Jordan scored his second goal and Peter Bergholz tallied his 9th goal of the season. Clan Alumni did not fold their tents and continued to press and were finally rewarded when playing-coach Matthew Cooper scored his first goal of the season. The victory puts the Firemen in 3rd place in the Group 'A' table, 7 points behind ICSF Inter. It should be noted, however, that SportsTown has 3 games in hand over the group leaders.

The revitalized Westside Rino survived some early pressure from the Burnaby Canadians but then had little difficulty in beating the host team 2-0 in a game played on Saturday at Burnaby Lake Park. Westside got goals from veteran Martin Best and young Nenad Stojanovic and outstanding performances from defenders Aaron Richer, Boban Aleksic as well as young midfielder Steve Deblasio. As a result of the victory, Rino's team remains in second place in the Group 'A' table, 3 points behind group leaders ICSF Inter. Also on Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park, Surrey United and the Metro-Ford Wolves were unable to resolve their differences and settled for a rather meaningless 1-1 tie, a tie that helps neither team very much. Kevin Todd gave the Wolves the lead early in the second half after he made a brilliant run from his fullback position. Veteran Shawn Blakeway took advantage of some sloppy defensive work to score the equalizer midway through the second half. Finally, on Sunday at McNair School in Richmond, Indo FC won the "Indian Derby" by edging Khalsa SC 1-0 on the strength of Steve Grewal's first half goal. Whitecap Oliver Heald was his usual brilliant self in the middle of the park as he led Indo FC to a well-earned victory. Youth call-up goalkeeper Jordan Yppri made his senior debut for Indo FC and was called upon to make a sensational save late in the match to preserve the margin of victory. The 3 points allows Indo FC to stay within one point of Sapperton in the relegation-avoidance race.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SPORTING CLUB for their brilliant performance in defeating the highly-rated and very skillful Pegasus FC by a 2-0 score. As a result of the victory, Sporting Club remains solidly in first place in the Group 'B' table.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: OLIVER HEALD, of Indo FC, for leading his team to a well-deserved 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Khalsa SC. Heald controlled the midfield with his brilliant ball control and immaculate passing. For his efforts, Heald wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-02-12. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

Azzi, come on, I know you are a big fan of all the WhiteCap players in the league, but Olli had a very average game, in fact I think it was probably one of the toughest games for Olli to play in because the pitch was soo bad and the play of both teams was terrible. Olli did not do a lot on the attack for Indo and is not a big part of their defending either. Good on him, but I thing JJ would get it with two goals for FF, but I am sure Olli was and all-star afterward at the SuperBowl party.

I'm not sure if Azzi was there HOS, but I've heard he gets little bits from each team manager after the games and does his best to piece it all together with his superlative vocabulary and emphatic writing style. Someone young veteran from Indo probably said Ollie was their MOTM and he ran with it. Case in point he calls Joe from our team asking who hit the cross bar late in our game with Inter and Joe who wasn't at our game said, probably Hleucka, he tends to hit the bar a lot. Bam it's in the write up. It wasn't 'Hleucka' who hit the bar btw...for a change.

HOS:

KNVB is correct. I think Willi Azzi writes his own stuff for the most part if he sees the game. If not, he simply takes what the Premier teams submit and adds "young", "veteran" or "young veteran" plus a few other superlatives to the names and team reports.

So if guys don't like the top player picks from their teams, then they should be asking their own coaches and managers what game they saw. ;)

I hear that the VMSL player of the week is chosen by some big fat horror show waitress at PAZZO TRATTORIA. She uses pizza to lure the VMSL player of her choice into her love dungeon. Like Jabba the Hut, she roars,"BRING ME HEALD!!!!!" "Which one?" ask her minions. "THE GOOD ONE OF COURSE!!!" "WHEN I NEED THE BITS OF PEPPERONI AND MUSHROOMS SWEPT OUT OF MY BLOUSE, I'LL NAME THE CURLER PLAYER OF THE WEEK!!!!"

Last year in a fit of desperation, she was heard to command, " BRING ME MIKE FRANK!!" About 3 minutes after his arrival the whole city shook with her command," PLEASE TAKE MIKE FRANK AWAY, JUST GIVE HIM HIS FCUKING PIZZA AND TAKE HIM BACK TO RICHMOND PLEASE!!!!!!"

It's not fair really.

IMPERIAL CUP -- 2004-02-16

Only 9 Imperial Cup contenders remain in the running as the round of 16 was almost completed this past weekend. The only postponed game--between Pegasus FC and Khalsa SC--will be played on Wednesday evening at Bear Creek Park in Surrey. No major upsets took place as all the favourite teams were able to emerge victorious, although 4 of the 7 games had to be settled in overtime.

On Sunday, at Hillcrest Park in Vancouver, Sporting Club and the Sapperton Rovers engaged in a what can best be described as a shoot-out with the Portuguese team finally winning 5-3. The first half ended in a 2-2 tie with Mike Gomes and Paulo Almeida scoring for the home team and Paul Favaro and Ted Ullrich replying for the Rovers. Gomes' goal, scored midway through the first half, was a thing of beauty as he raced in from the halfway line before depositing the ball past Sapperton's goalkeeper, Kurt Waechter. Most of the second half was played at a fast and intense pace with both teams taking turns attacking and creating scoring chances. With about 20 minutes left in the match 15-year old Justin Isidro scored his first goal in senior competition to re-establish Sporting's lead. Soon thereafter, another youngster--Steve Frazao--made a brilliant run to score Sporting's fourth and decisive goal. Isidro added the insurance marker on a fine header before Sapperton's Rob Sing--yet another youngster playing in the VMSL--brought the Rovers within 2 goals. Sporting's victory means that they will now host upstart Richmond United--the only remaining Division 1 team in contention--in the quarter-final round.

Richmond United got to the quarter-finals with yet another 2-1 overtime victory, this one at the expense of Vancouver Lobbans, also of the first division. After upsetting SportsTown Firemen last weekend, Richmond United was probably a little overconfident against the Lobbans. Steve Frank, on a great volley from a difficult angle, gave Richmond the lead midway through the second half. The slim lead was erased late in the second half when Lobbans finally got the equalizer. Neither team produced a lot of scoring chances in the two periods of overtime, but Richmond's Sean Davies was able to capitalize on a goal mouth scramble very late in the second overtime to claim the victory and the chance to play Sporting Club in the next round.

In what promised to be a very tight and even contest--between Indo FC and AFC Leopards--turned out to be a rather one-sided affair as the Premier Division Indo FC easily defeated the first division Leopards by a 6-3 score. Indo FC got 4 goals from Steve Grewal and 2 from Whitecap Oliver Heald to clinch the easy victory over the rather undisciplined Leopards. In fact, the Leopards received 3 red cards during the match, equalling the number of goals that they scored! Speaking of scoring, Benji Hayford notched a pair of goals while Ian Sneddon scored once in a losing cause. It should be noted that the Leopards have recently gained promotion to the Premier Division and that Indo FC is still in a battle to avoid relegation to the first division. Indo FC now takes on the winner of Pegasus FC and Khalsa SC in the next round.

Also on Sunday at Hillcrest Park, the top-ranked ICSF Inter once again had difficulty in disposing of a first division team and, once again, had to rely on an overtime goal by Whitecap Steve Kindel to finally defeat the underdog Cliff Avenue United by a 1-0 margin. The upstart Cliff Avenue team defended tenaciously for the entire match and relied on the excellent goalkeeping of Mario Trionfi to extend ICSF into overtime. Inter's victory means that they will now play Surrey United in the quarter-finals.

In probably the best and most evenly-contested match of the weekend, Surrey United squeaked out a penalty kick victory over the Burnaby Canadians after 90 minutes of regular time and 30 minutes of overtime could not produce a victor. After a scoreless first half, Gino Gaita headed home a Travis Turner free kick to give Burnaby the lead. Surrey battled back strongly and were rewarded for their efforts when Dave Hleucka burst past two defenders before hammering the ball into the top corner of the net. The 30 minutes of overtime did not resolve the outcome of the match although each team had a glorious opportunity to gain the victory. In fact, Burnaby's Ryan McNabb and Surrey's Cory Janzen came extremely close to scoring the winner and thus avoiding the dreaded penalty kicks. In the penalty kick "shoot-out" the brilliance of Surrey United's goalkeeper Drew Smiley came to the forefront as he saved three Burnaby penalty kicks while Cory Janzen, Gareth Wilkshire, and Michael Evans scored for Surrey.

On Saturday, at Hillcrest Park, the heavily-favoured Westside Rino edged Clan Alumni 1-0 in yet match settled in overtime. After a very evenly played first half, Westside came out strong in the second 45 minutes and came close to scoring on several occasions. Craig Chiasson, Markus Felderer, Alex Percy, Martin Best, and Nenad Stojanovic all had great chances to put the result out of doubt but poor finishing permitted the Clan to take the game into overtime. Very early in the first overtime half, young Steve Deblasio crossed a low, hard ball unto the path of veteran Craig Chiasson who redirected the ball past the Clan goalkeeper for the Golden Goal victory. Westside will now play against the Metro-Ford Wolves who defeated PCOV 4-0 in a match played on Sunday evening at the brand new field turf on Heritage Mountain in Port Moody. Kevin Todd scored twice for the Wolves, while a pair of youngsters--Azad Palani and Donald Kambere--added the others. Defensively, Elliott Smith turned in a stellar performance while attacking midfielder Kevin Todd was a going concern throughout the match.

In the only Premier Division league played, Trollers FC (of Group 'B') upset Group 'A' SportsTown Firemen by a 3-1 score. Both teams had been eliminated from the Imperial Cup the previous week and were thus able to play this important (for Provincial Cup qualification, if nothing else) match. Justin Thompson scored twice for the Trollers, while Jesse Fetterley added a singleton. Jeff Potratz replied for the Firemen.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: INDO FC for their excellent--and disciplined--performance in defeating the highly-regarded, and newly-promoted, AFC Leopards by an emphatic 6-3 margin.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Surrey United's goalkeeper, DREW SMILEY, for his amazing display in the penalty kick "shoot-out" against the Burnaby Canadians. In fact, Smiley saved 3 out of the 5 penalty kicks to lead his team to victory. For his efforts, Smiley wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-02-26. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

I could have sworn the guy playing in net for Sapperton on the week-end was named "Kent".

Oddly enough, his name was also "Kent" in the week 14 report which, judging by the emphatic similarity of language, seems to have been written by the same guy who did this week's report.

I'd also like to know what a "yet match" is, and why Westside and and Clan Alumni decided to engage in one.

Proofread.

Smiley saved 3 out of the 5 penalty kicks to lead his team to victory.
Correction... He saved 3 of 3 PK's to lead his team to victory. The other two weren't necessary.

Funny no mention of BBY's stellar long ball tactics... :p

IMPERIAL CUP -- 2004-02-23

Three out of the 8 VMSL Province Cup slots have now been declared as most of the Imperial Cup quarter-final matches were played this past weekend. The other one, between Pegasus FC and Indo FC, will be played on Wednesday evening at Bear Creek Park in Surrey. The only upset, albeit of a rather mild variety, took place on Sunday at Adanac Park in Vancouver where the defending Province Cup champions, Surrey United, defeated the league front-runners, ICSF Inter, 2-1 in a thrilling overtime contest. After a scoreless first half, Surrey United took the lead early in the second half when Dave Hleucka looped a header past Inter's fine goalkeeper Dennis Kindel. Inter's Kevin Crouch tied things up shortly thereafter to force yet another overtime. It should be noted that ICSF had won its previous two Imperial Cup encounters in overtime. However, on this occasion, the league leaders missed several golden opportunities late in the contest and in the overtime to put the game out of Surrey's reach. Clinical goal scorers such as Joe Scigliano, Andrew Corazza, Sal Cuccione, and Brian VanSchagen seemed to be snake-bitten and were unable to deliver what would have been a well-deserved game winner. As is often the case, the team that applied all the pressure left itself vulnerable at the back and Surrey United took full advantage of the situation to score the game winner when a Joe Deacon's cross was volleyed home by Rob Wilson. As a result of the victory, Surrey United is now assured of a place in the Province Cup draw. On the other hand, ICSF Inter should not have any difficulty of gaining a Province Cup slot since it sits comfortably in first place in the Group 'A' standings.

Also on Sunday, at Hillcrest Park in Vancouver, Westside Rino put on one of its best performances of the season in easily defeating the Metro-Ford Wolves by an emphatic 3-0 score. As a result of the victory, Rino's team advances to the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup where it will meet Surrey United in what promises to be a closely-contested match. Westside got first half goals from veteran Craig Chiasson and young Nenad Stojanovic and a late second half goal from yet another veteran, Alex Percy, to salt away the victory. Another veteran, Mike Wicken, was rock-solid in goal and fully earned the shutout. The combination of experience and youth is beginning to pay dividends as Westside now seems to be a top contender to win the Imperial Cup and perhaps the Province Cup. While Westside is now assured of a place in the Province Cup draw, the Wolves will have to gain their place through the Premier Division standings.

The other quarter-final match, played on Sunday at Hastings Bowl, featured Group 'A' leaders, Sporting Club, and first division Richmond United. After a scoreless first half, a half that saw Richmond's goalkeeper Jay Cowan perform miracles, Sporting's relentless pressure finally paid off as Paulo Almeida, Mike Gomes, and Jeff Nolan scored. Defensively, Mark Gomes was once again a tower of strength for the home team. The victory secures a spot for the Portuguese team in the Imperial Cup semi-finals and in the Province Cup draw.

On Wednesday evening, at Bear Creek Park, Pegasus FC eliminated Khalsa SC from the Imperial Cup by defeating them 3-1 on goals by Mike Dodd, Darin Burr, and Paul Dailly. As a result of the victory, Pegasus advances to the quarter-finals against Indo FC. The match will be played this Wednesday at Bear Creek Park.

In addition to the Imperial Cup quarter-finals, three Premier Division league games were played this past weekend. At Ambleside Park on Saturday, Trollers FC and the Burnaby Canadians settled for a 1-1 draw with Gino Gaita scoring an early goal for the Canadians and Steve Lake replying shortly thereafter for the Trollers. On Sunday, at Hastings Bowl, Columbus FC beat Clan Alumni 3-1 with three youngsters--Cam Wilson, Alex Elliott, and Mark Heinhuis--scoring the Columbus goals. Neal Yeung replied for the luckless Clan. Also on Sunday, at McNair School in Richmond, Khalsa SC upset the SportsTown Firemen by a 3-1 margin. Raju Chohan, Aneel Bilin, and Marcelo Giunto scored the Khalsa goals while Whitecap Jeff Skinner scored the best goal of the match by hammering home a wicked 30-metre free kick.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: WESTSIDE RINO for their clinical 3-0 victory over the Metro-Ford Wolves. As a result of the victory, Westside advances to the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup and the round of 16 of the Province Cup.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Surrey United's ROB WILSON for his magnificent 20-metre full volley that gave his team a hard-fought, if not fully-deserved, 2-1 overtime victory over ICSF Inter. For his effort, Wilson wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-03-04. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

So whoever beats the Wolves now is team of the week?

Azzi's write up makes our game seem a little more one sided than it really was. They didn't have several several golden opportunities that had 1 maybe 2 and fcuked them both up. As did we. The 'clinical goal scores' where shooting from 30+ and having their shots blocked... seriously where does he get all his information? Our winner was against the run of play though. It must be nice to have guys like Corazza and Steve Kindel coming off the bench late into the second half. They changed the flow of the game from us to them with those subs for sure. Though it didn't help in the end, did it?

Back to back pizza's for Slurrey

Ever since Regs gave Azzi a thesaurus for Christmas his write-ups have become marginally better in the sense that he uses several different adjectives now than just the one or two he used to. The problem is he still uses a freaking adjective before every goddamn noun. For fcuks sake, he's driving me around the fcuking bend. Next thing you know I'll be posting shite about monkeys, banana-stealing dogs, leprechauns and fcuking dinosaurs not to mention Spurs, cycles, secret investors and eighty-percent possession. By the way, I've scored three times in Division 2 this year where's my fcuking pizza?

LEAGUE PLAY -- 2004-03-01

Three upsets--two huge and one minor--took place this past weekend as the VMSL reverted back to league games after 3 rounds of Imperial Cup play. The huge upsets were orchestrated by the two bottom teams in Group 'B', Columbus FC and Clan Alumni, as they defeated top-ranked ICSF Inter and the aspiring, but struggling, Metro-Ford Wolves by identical 1-0 scores. Neither Columbus nor Clan Alumni had anything to play for--except for the most important thing of all: pride--since the 3 points are quite meaningless to them. In fact, Clan Alumni has already been relegated to the first division, while Columbus would need a miracle to qualify for the Province Cup. Regardless, both teams came out of the starting gate with fire in their bellies and totally deserved the victories.

On Sunday, at Riverway Park in Burnaby, Clan Alumni got excellent performances from central defender Justin Dudley and forwards Romeo Cuter and Tiarnan King to edge Metro-Ford 1-0. Anthony Marrello scored the lone goal of the contest midway through the first half as he converted a immaculately accurate pass from Whitecap Tiarnan King into the match's only goal. Clan's goalkeeper Raegyn Hall fully earned the rare shutout with an outstanding performance. Clan's disappointing season thus ends on a positive note--a good sign for next season! The Wolves, on the other hand, now find themselves in two races: one for a slot in the Province Cup and the other to avoid relegation.

The minor upset took place on Sunday at South Memorial Park in Vancouver where the SportsTown Firemen clearly defeated Group 'B' leaders Sporting Club by a 3-1 score. Sporting took the early lead on a goal by Paulo Almeida but SportsTown came roaring back in the second half and got two goals from 'GOLDEN BOOT AWARD' contender Peter Bergholz and a singleton from Jeff Potratz to salt away the victory. The Firemen's victory enables them to climb out of the relegation zone in Group 'A' and, at the same time, gives them almost 100% assurance of participating in the Province Cup. Furthermore, SportsTown is still in contention for the league title. On the other hand, Sporting Club--while still in first place in Group 'B'--must now look over their shoulders to see how Surrey United is faring in its effort to gain first place. It all leads to a very exciting season finale!

Also on Sunday, at Adanac Park in Vancouver, the Sapperton Rovers and Indo FC faced off in what was probably the most important game of the week, if not the season. In fact, both teams are struggling near the bottom of the Group 'A' table, but both still have a chance to gain a berth in the Province Cup. In other words, a victory was essential to both teams. As is often the case, however, a match of this magnitude ended in a 1-1 tie, a result that favours the Rovers more than Indo FC since Sapperton has 1 more point in the standings as well as a game in hand. Both goals were scored early in the match as the Rovers took the lead virtually from the opening kick-off as Luke Hogan raced in on goal after beating a couple of defenders. Veteran Ted Ullrich converted the rebound after Hogan's shot was saved by Indo's goalkeeper, Didar Sandhu. Shortly thereafter, Indo's veteran defender, Jason Levitt scored a rare goal directly from a corner kick to restore parity. For Indo FC, forward Billy Shokar and defender Ricky Hikida had outstanding games, while Sapperton's forwards Mike Favaro and Shane Mummery were dangerous threats throughout the match. Midfielder Trevor Todd and defender Sven Wagner also played very well for the Rovers.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: COLUMBUS FC for their unbelievable 1-0 victory over ICSF Inter in the 'Italian Derby'. Despite the fact that the 3 points meant much more to ICSF, Columbus fought hard throughout the match and fully deserved the victory.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: SportsTown's PETER BERGHOLZ for his two-goal perfomance in leading his team to an impressive, and very important, 3-1 victory over Sporting Club. For his effort, Bergholz wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-03-11. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.
