TEAM OF THE WEEK: COLUMBUS FC for their unbelievable 1-0 victory over ICSF Inter in the 'Italian Derby'.

This is a joke, what is soo unbelievable about a Columbus victoria, they have beat many good teams this year, and are still in the hunt for a Provincial spot, no matter how faint it is.

.Westside Rino stayed in contention for the league title by edging Khalsa SC by a narrow 1-0 margin after a rather drab 90 minutes of play.
Plus, I thought the Khalsa/Westside game had lots of emotion from both teams, it was not a boring game at all.

It will be great if we get a few teams are tied in points for that last Provincial spot, because I think it comes down to a play-off, very exciting stuff, remember playing one vs. Inter with Peg 6 or 7 years ago.

Four important questions still remain unanswered in the Premier Division of the VMSL. The first is: Which team will be relegated from Group 'A', Indo FC or the Sapperton Rovers? The second is: Which team will gain the last available berth in the Province Cup, Indo FC, the Sapperton Rovers or the Burnaby Canadians? The third question is: Which team will win Group 'A', ICSF Inter or Westside Rino? And finally, which team will win the Group 'B' title, Sporting Club or Surrey United? A couple of other issues were resolved this past weekend as four Premier Division matches were played despite the horrendous climatic conditions.

The Metro-Ford Wolves came out of their slump with a nearly perfect performance in defeating the Sapperton Rovers 2-0 and thus assuring themselves of a slot in the Province Cup. As well, Metro-Ford is now officially out of the relegation zone, while the Rovers--as mentioned earlier--are still in a battle with Indo FC to see which team will qualify for the Province Cup and which one will be relegated to the first division. The Wolves - Rovers match was played on Saturday at the new turf field at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster. After a scoreless first half, a half which saw the Wolves carry most of the play but create only a few scoring chances, the tempo of the game increased in the second half as Metro-Ford pressed hard for the all-important opening goal. The insertion of Ryugo Fusa into the Wolves' line-up added some badly needed spark to the forward line. In fact, it was Fusa who opened the scoring midway through the second half when he took advantage of a sloppy back pass by a Sapperton defender before chipping the ball over the outstretched arms of Sapperton goalkeeper Kent Waechter. Shortly thereafter, Fusa set up Andrew Veer for the insurance marker. Veer was absolutely outstanding in the middle of the park, dictating the pace of the game from start to finish. Defensively, veterans Danny Jones and Elliott Smith, as well as youngster Brook Scott, were unbeatable.

On Friday evening, at Port Moody Town Centre, Sporting Club widened the gap between themselves and Surrey United at the top of the Group 'B' standings by defeating Khalsa SC 3-1. While the score pretty well reflects the flow of the game, it wasn't until the final 5 minutes that Sporting was able to finally subdue the feisty and energetic Khalsa team. Young Steve Frazao was a going concern throughout the first half as he controlled the middle of the park in an impeccable manner. Not only that, but he gave Sporting the lead midway through the first half with a well-executed goal. Unfortunately, Frazao was injured early in the second half and his absence was felt tremendously as Khalsa came storming back in search of the equalizer. The New Westminster-based team was finally rewarded when Matt Mori scored on a goal-mouth scramble with about 15 minutes remaining in the match. Sporting was not to be denied, however, and got the winner with only 5 minutes left from the foot of Mike Gomes and the insurance marker from 15-year old Justin Isidro at the stroke of 90 minutes. It should be noted that this was Isidro's first goal in senior competition. Sporting Club now seems to be pretty well assured of winning the Group 'A' title with Surrey United 7 points back.

Surrey United fell further behind Sporting Club by virtue of a 1-1 tie with Indo FC in a match played on Sunday at McNair School in Richmond. The tie helps neither team as Indo FC was also in search of an all-important 3 points in its attempt to avoid relegation. Surrey's Martin Schaefer, with his first goal of the season, gave his team the lead very late in the first half. Veteran Surrey midfielder Joe Deacon then failed to convert a penalty kick awarded against Indo FC's goalkeeper Didar Sandhu. With only a few moments remaining in the contest, Indo FC was awarded a free kick from well outside the penalty area. Sandhu came out of his goal and used his considerable height to outjump all the Surrey opponents before heading home the equalizer on a fine cross from Jason Levitt.

On Saturday, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, Pegasus FC and Trollers FC finally settled for a 2-2 draw after an entertaining and exciting 90 minutes of play. The West Vancouver-based Trollers opened the scoring 10 minutes into the game on a well-take free kick from Steve Lake. The Trollers added to their lead later in the first half when Babak Shahbazi took advantage of some sloppy Pegasus defending. Near the end of the first half, Steve Lake was expelled from the game, reducing the Trollers to 10 men. In the second half, Pegasus took full advantage of the situation and applied constant pressure in search of the equalizing 2 goals. Young Adam Costley led the way by scoring the first goal and then by setting up veteran Clark Brolly for the tying goal. Near the end of the match, Randy Celebrini hit the cross-bar from close range thus preventing Pegasus from gaining all 3 points.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: METRO-FORD WOLVES for their clinical 2-0 victory over the Sapperton Rovers in a vital clash between two teams fighting desperately to avoid relegation. As a result of the victory, The Wolves also qualify for the Province Cup playdowns.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Pegasus' ADAM COSTLEY for his excellent perfomance in leading his team to an impressive, come-from-behind, 2-2 draw against Trollers FC. Costley scored Pegasus' first goal and set up Clark Brolly for the equalizer with a great cross. For his effort, Costley wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-03-18. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

1. How anyone can confuse Ambleside with Newton Athletic Park, I'll never know...

2. Randall hit the bar about 20 minutes into the second half with the score 2-1.

3. Costley did not set-up Brolly for the tying goal, at least I didn't see the cross come from his foot

Quality control is certainly suffering down at VMSL headquarters...

The IMPERIAL CUP -- 2004-02-16 report mentions Justin's goals against Sapperton as his first in senior competition.

Can you call it research when all you have to do is re-read old material you wrote yourself?

LEAGUE PLAY -- 2004-03-15

Two of the four important questions were answered this past weekend as ICSF Inter clinched the Group 'A' title in the Premier Division by virtue of and exciting and highly-competitive 3-2 decision over Indo FC. As a result of the loss, Indo FC is now officially relegated to the first division. The other two questions, however, remain unanswered as the Sapperton Rovers still need at least one point from their remaining game (against Surrey United) to clinch a berth in the Province Cup. Also, Surrey United desperately needs the victory (and a negative result for Sporting Club) to maintain any hope of winning the Group 'B' title. This means that the result of the Saturday game between Surrey United and the Sapperton Rovers is of the utmost importance. The match is scheduled to 12 noon at Cloverdale Athletic Park.

As we mentioned earlier, ICSF Inter and Indo FC provided the numerous Sunday afternoon fans at Adanac Park with a very exciting 90 minutes as both teams threw caution to the wind in their attempt to gain all three points. When one considers the fact that this was a match between a first-place and a last-place team, one realizes how competitive and evenly-matched the Premier Division teams are. In any case, Inter opened the scoring midway through the first half on a goal by Tom Adamson after Indo FC had applied most of the pressure and was somewhat unfortunate not to have taken the lead. ICSF goalkeeper, Denis Kindel, was outstanding on a couple of occasions to keep the visiting team off the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes of play. Indo FC was finally rewarded for its dominance early in the second half when Steve Grewal took advantage of an Inter defensive miscue to score the tying goal. At this point, Indo FC did everything in its power to get the all-important go-ahead goal and pushed forward with reckless abandon. Once again, Kindel came up with some sensational saves to keep Inter in the game. As is often the case, ICSF took advantage of this constant pressure and got its second goal on a clinical counter-attack goal by Joseph Marrello. Indo FC did not stop trying and with only minutes remaining got the equalizer from the foot of Gurjit Dhaliwal. After squandering a glorious scoring chance, Indo FC eventually succumbed to Inter on the last kick of the game as Filippo Zaurrini finally put the game out of reach. The match was a credit to soccer in general and to the VMSL in particular and both teams should be applauded for their phenomenal effort.

On Saturday, also at Adanac Park, the Sapperton Rovers got an all-important 2-1 victory over Sporting Club. After a scoreless first half, the Rovers got two quick goals in the second half to put the game out of reach for the struggling Group 'B' leaders. Young Rob Sing was instrumental in both Sapperton goals as he scored the first one himself before setting up veteran Paul Favaro for what turned out to be the winner. A late goal by Sporting's Brian Gebbie made things rather interesting for the final few minutes of the well-played match. Kevin Hearne, in only his second game of the season, was superlative in the Sapperton midfield, while defensively Matt Hale and Jeff Rogers had outstanding games in a winning cause. The victory, combined with Indo's loss to ICSF Inter, puts the Rovers out of the relegation battle and, furthermore, keeps their hopes of making it to the Province Cup alive. In fact, Sapperton is now tied with the Burnaby Canadians for the last available Province Cup berth.

Also on Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park, a very vibrant and committed Surrey United team hosted a rather disorganized and apathetic Columbus FC in a match that obviously meant much more to the home side than to the visitors. Columbus, in fact, started the game with only 10 players and were down 1-0 before their 11th man appeared on the scene! Surrey United took the early lead when Shawn Blakeway's shot bounced off both posts before falling onto the feet of Corey Janzen who proceeded to score the easiest goal of his life from very close range. Midway through the first half, Clayton Dobbin hammered a low, left-foot shot into the corner of the net from about 20 metres for what proved to be the winning goal. Diminutive midfielder, Rob Wilson, got the insurance marker late in the first half on a fine header set up by Dave Hleuka's long throw-in. In the second half, United missed a couple of breakaways as well as hitting the post twice before Columbus nabbed a consolation goal by "GOLDEN BOOT AWARD" leader Alex Elliott. Surrey's Gareth Wilkshire, after hitting two goal posts, finally got his just reward when he scored on a penalty kick late in the match. The victory keeps Surrey United in the race for the Group 'B' title, while the loss obviously meant nothing to Columbus.

On Friday evening, at Newton Athletic Park, Pegasus FC and Khalsa SC played to a rather uneventful 2-2 tie. Ryan Powell and Terry Sugars scored the Pegasus goals, while Jas Atwal and Chris Johnson (normally a goalkeeper!) replied for Khalsa. On Saturday, at South Memorial Park, SportsTown Firemen and the Metro-Ford Wolves also engaged in a boring contest that ended in a 1-1 tie. SportsTown took the early lead when Ratish Kumar unleashed a vicious 25-metre drive while young Azad Palani replied shortly thereafter for the Wolves.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ICSF INTER for their exciting and hard-fought 3-2 victory over Indo FC. As a result of the victory, Inter has now clinched first place in Group 'A' of the VMSL's Premier Division. ICSF will now play-off against either Sporting Club or Surrey United for the Premier Division title.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ICSF Inter's goalkeeper DENIS KINDEL for his amazing perfomance in leading his team to an impressive 3-2 victory over Indo FC. Kindel made several phenomenal saves against his highly-motivated opponents. For his effort, Kindel wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-03-25. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

as ICSF Inter clinched the Group 'A' title in the Premier Division
Why? Is there something in the league constitution where a playoff is not the tie-breaker at the top of a side to see who plays in the league championship game?

SO what is the tie breaker then?

Goals for? Against? Difference?
What about head -to-head?

We have the advantage in all of those categories....

I guess the league is going to stay quiet and hope for a westside loss before makeing a decision.

PS My goal was not offside. One goal all year, and you want to tarnish it by calling it offside.

Dug this up from 2001 - don't know if it has changed or not... 4.2 seems to be the key
Section 4
Division Section Championship

4.1. At the completion of the league schedule, the team with the most points shall be declared the Division Section Champion.

4.2. in the event of two teams having the same number of points, the Division Section Champion shall be determined by the result of a one game playoff. The game will be played on a neutral ground, with extra time periods, and a penalty kick series if necessary.

4.3. In the event three or more teams are tied for first place a round-robin playoff will take place. If the Board of Directors feels that there is not sufficient time to complete the round-robin playoff the following formula will be used to break the tie: (a) Goal difference (goals for minus goals against) in games played among tied teams. (b) Goal average (goals for divided by goals against) in games played among tied teams. (c) Goal difference in all games played. (d) Goal average in all games played. If, after the round-robin playoff two or more teams are still tied, the mathematical formula for breaking the tie will be the same as the one above.,

i'm not sure what azzi is up to, but you know they can't do something without some sort of controversy attached. i'm sure it will all be moot when we get spanked by the Toons next week.

should we beat toons this weekend, i think the league executive is going to be eating some crow pie. why would they declare inter side a champions (rhetorical). it flys in the face of the constitution. guaranteed this would not have been the case had a certain other team be in our situation. it's not only the title and pride that goes with it, we're also talking about cold hard cash. more to follow.

You don't think Azzi just fcuked up? Maybe he just miscalculated your games left/ point total? You seem awful upset for a guy who joined Westside so late in the season...

LEAGUE PLAY -- 2004-03-22

Our premature announcement of ICSF Inter clinching the Group 'A' title was even further highlighted this past weekend when Westside Rino defeated SportsTown Firemen 4-2 thus forcing a playoff game against Inter to decide the Group 'A' winner. Therefore, two questions still remain unanswered and they both relate to the Premier Division championship. In fact, a winner has yet emerged in either one of the two groups. The Group 'B' winner could also be decided by a playoff as Surrey United, with a victory over Pegasus FC, can still catch Sporting Club at the top of the standings. Then, of course, there will be the Premier Division final to be played between the two group winners. All this, plus the Imperial Cup semi-finals and final, the all-star game against the Whitecaps, and the Province Cup playdowns, mean that a lot of soccer remains to be played this season.

On the other hand, one question was answered as the Sapperton Rovers clinched the last Province Cup slot--at the expense of the Burnaby Canadians--by virtue of a 0-0 draw against Surrey United. The game, played on Saturday at Cloverdale Athletic Park was a very important one for both teams as Surrey United also needed a result to improve its chances of catching Sporting Club at the head of the table. As it turned out, the game proved to be a listless, lacklustre affair with neither team really trying that hard to gain all 3 points. If anything, Sapperton seemed to try harder even though its scoring chances were also scarce. Sapperton defender, Shane Mummery, filled in quite competently for the suspended Brian Donald, while midfielder Mike Favaro created problems for Surrey United throughout the match. Surrey's goalkeeper, Drew Smiley, was called upon to make an outstanding save late in the match on a great shot from Bruno Ramogida. While the single point gives the Rovers a place in the Province Cup, Surrey United now needs a victory over Pegasus FC to catch Sporting Club. The Surrey United - Pegasus FC game will be played this Wednesday evening at Newton Athletic Park.

On Sunday, at McNair School in Richmond, Westside Rino gained a share of first place in Group 'A' by defeating the SportsTown Firemen 4-2. Rino's boys got off to a great start and led 3-0 at halftime. Nenad Stojanovic scored twice for Westside, while the opening goal was an own goal scored by a Firemen defender. The second half told a totally different story as SportsTown took total control of the match and scored two great goals--by Peter Bergholz and Jason Jordan--to put Westside back on its heels. With the score 3-2, the Firemen pushed forward in a desperate effort to gain the tie. As usually happens, Westside took advantage of the situation and was rewarded with a lethal counter attack that resulted in Steve Dickinson scoring the insurance marker. All in all, it was a great game to watch and a real credit to the VMSL as both teams did their best to gain the victory. It should be noted, that Peter Bergholz--as a result of his goal--has gained a share of the "GOLDEN BOOT AWARD" with Columbus' Alex Elliott. Both players ended the regular season with 12 goals.

Also on Sunday, at Hastings Bowl in Vancouver, the Metro-Ford Wolves edged Sporting Club 1-0 in another exciting and well-played contest. Sporting needed at least a point to clinch first place in Group 'B' but were denied that opportunity by a hungry and determined Metro-Ford side. Andrew Veer scored early in the match on a wicked 20-metre drive that eluded Sporting's goalkeeper Mike Halford. Defensively, Tim Harris played extremely well for the Wolves, while young goalkeeper Mathew Bird recorded yet another shutout. Metro-Ford thus ends the regular season in third place in the Group 'A' standings, while Sporting Club will have to wait for the Wednesday evening result between Surrey United and Pegasus to see if a playoff game will be needed to decide the Group 'A' winners.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: WESTSIDE RINO for its exciting and hard-fought 4-2 victory over SportsTown Firemen. As a result of the victory, Westside has now forced a playoff against ICSF Inter to decide first place in Group 'A' of the VMSL's Premier Division.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Westside's young forward NENAD STOJANOVIC for his two timely and well-executed first half goals against SportsTown Firemen. For his effort, Stojanovic wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-04-01. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

Two very exciting Imperial Cup semi-finals matches took place this past weekend with Surrey United defeating Westside Rino 3-2 and Pegasus FC prevailing over Sporting Club by a 1-0 score. On Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park's new turf field, Surrey United battled back after being a goal down at half-time to eventually overcome Rino's team in dramatic fashion in the last minute of the second overtime period. From the opening whistle it became obvious that the strong wind would be a factor and Westside took full advantage of the situation in the first half, creating some serious problems for the Surrey defence. At about the 25th minute mark, Rino's boys took the lead when young Nenad Stojanovic turned sharply in the box and calmly sidefooted the ball into the corner of the Surrey net. While Westside continued to press for the remainder of the first half, it was Surrey United that came close to scoring on the counter-attack as veteran goalkeeper Mike Wicken was called upon to make a couple of fine saves on shots from Shawn Blakeway and Cory Janzen. With the wind at their backs in the second frame, the Surrey lads came out like gangbusters and within ten minutes levelled the score when all-star midfielder Cory Janzen fired home his own rebound from close range. With only 10 minutes remaining in regulation time, Surrey's Shawn Blakeway broke down the left wing, but inside past a Westside defender and hammered a 20-metre shot into the top corner of the net. United's joy was short-lived, however, as Westside equalized 5 minutes later when veteran defender Boban Aleksic scored on a great shot from the edge of the penalty area after some sloppy defending by Surrey United. Both teams had a few good scoring chances in the two overtime periods, but it was up to last-minute substitute Michael Evans to score the winning goal on a powerful shot from a difficult angle. Evans had entered the field moments earlier in anticipation of the penalty kick 'shoot-out'. As it turns out, the move made coach Martin Foden look like a genius!

On Sunday, at Hastings Bowl in Vancouver, Pegasus FC and Sporting Club entertained the numerous spectators with some excellent soccer in a game that was played in truly sporting fashion. Pegasus got the lone goal of the match at about the 15th minute mark when a well-executed corner kick by Ryan Powell found Darin Burr at the far post. Burr's shot--from a very sharp angle--hit the crossbar before entering the Sporting net. Sporting pressed hard for the equalizer for the remainder of the first half but was thwarted by some great defending from Darin Burr and Trevor Short and some fine goalkeeping from Steve London. The second half was more or less a repetition of the first 45 minutes as both teams took turns attacking and creating glorious scoring opportunities. On one of them, Sporting's Mike Gomes rang a great shot off the crossbar with London well beaten, while at the other end of the pitch, Randy Celebrini scored what seemed to be a legitimate goal. The goal was was called back by referee Mauricio Navarro for an unsporting behaviour infraction against Celebrini. Forwards Ryan Powell, Rob Reed, and Randy Celebrini played very well for Pegasus, while defender George Lapa and newly-signed midfielder Rory Hunt were outstanding in a losing cause for Sporting Club. As a result of this past weekend's action, Surrey United will now take on Pegasus FC in the Imperial Cup final. The match will be played on Saturday, April 3 at 1:30 p.m. at Kinsman Stadium in North Vancouver.

Also on Sunday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park, the Under 21 Cup final was played between the Norvan Saints and Surrey United. Surrey totally dominated the first half but could only convert one goal-scoring opportunity when Chris Powell battled bravely through a goal mouth traffic jam to finally force Sean Kelly's free-kick into the open net. The second half told a totally different story, particularly after the expulsion of Surrey's midfielder Junaid Rasheed. A bad clearance by the Surrey's goalkeeper Ian Malnis allowed Carlos Sanchez to get the equalizer. Soon thereafter, James Wilton took advantage of another Surrey United defensive blunder to give Norvan the lead. Miras Ebrahimzadeh added the insurance marker in Norvan's 3-1 victory.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: PEGASUS FC for its exciting and hard-fought 1-0 overtime victory over Sporting Club. As a result of the victory, Pegasus will now play against Surrey United in the Imperial Cup final on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at Kinsman Stadium.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Surrey United's Michael Evans for his perfectly timed overtime goal in his team's 3-2 victory over Westside Rino. Evans had entered the field only moments earlier and, on his first touch of the ball, scored the winning goal! For his effort, Evans wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-04-08. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.
Evens was a late sub, but he started the game and then came back on for the last 5 of OT. No mention of a meg so it mustn't have happened. Phew, that would have been embarrassing if it had.

PEGASUS WIN IMPERIAL CUP -- 2004-04-05
One of the most prestigious trophies in the nation--the Imperial Cup--has eluded one the top teams in the land--Pegasus FC since the club's inception. Finally, on Sunday at Kinsman Stadium, Pegasus was able to win the coveted trophy with a fine display of soccer skill and tenacious determination. Pegasus took the game to Surrey United right from the start and was rewarded at about the 20th minute mark with a wonderful goal scored by former Whitecap Mike Dodd. Dodd was sent down the left flank by a brilliant 30-metre pass from the foot of another veteran, Randy Celebrini. Without a moment's hesitation, Dodd fired an unstoppable left-footed drive past Surrey's fine goalkeeper Drew Smiley. Surrey United fought back with a lot of grit and the large crowd witnessed a fine match played at a very high pace. Unfortunately for Surrey United, however, Pegasus' defense--anchored by Darrin Burr and Trevor Short--was able to thwart the numerous attacks. On the few occasions when the Surrey forwards were able to shoot on net, they found an unbeatable Steve London in the Pegasus net. The "Player of the Match" award, however, must be awarded to Mike Dodd, not only for his marvellous winning goal but also for the skill and poise that he demonstrated in the middle of the park. Pegasus FC thus wins its first ever Imperial Cup, while Surrey United will now have to concentrate on the league championship and perhaps the Province Cup.
The play-off games to determine the winners in each of the two groups of the Premier Division also took place this past week. On Wednesday evening, at Cloverdale Athletic Park, Surrey United edged Sporting Club 1-0 on a goal by Shawn Blakeway. Then on Sunday, at Adanac Park, Westside Rino defeated ICSF Inter 2-1 on the strength of two goals by a couple of youngsters, Nenad Stojanovic and Steve Deblasio. Andrew Corazza replied for ICSF. Defensively, Martin Best, Jason Small, Boban Aleksic, and Mike Mosher were outstanding for Westside, while Scott Spracklin played extremely well on the ICSF backline. Surrey United will now take on Westside Rino for the Premier Division championship on Saturday, April 10 at Cloverdale Athletic Park. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: PEGASUS FC for its exciting and hard-fought 1-0 victory over Surrey United. As a result of the victory, Pegasus won its first ever Imperial Cup trophy!
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Pegasus' Mike Dodd for his brilliant effort in his team's Imperial Cup victory. Dodd not only scored the lone goal of the match, but demonstrated outstanding skills in leading his team to a well-deserved victory. For his efforts, Dodd wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-04-15. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.
