SURREY UNITED WINS LEAGUE TITLE -- 2004-04-12

On Saturday afternoon, Surrey United defeated arch-rivals Westside Rino by a narrow 3-2 margin in front of numerous home town fans at Cloverdale Athletic Park. This marks the second time in two weeks that the Cloverdale team has beaten Rino's boys. The last time they met, Surrey United prevailed by an identical 3-2 score in the Imperial Cup semi-final. As a result of this latest victory, Surrey United wins the Premier Division championship for the second time in 3 years. In fact, only Surrey and Westside have won the league title over the past 5 seasons.

Both teams started the match cautiously and seemed somewhat apprehensive to take any risks. As the game progressed, however, both teams appeared more willing to gamble, particularly after Westside's opening goal at the 15th minute mark. Markus Felderer coolly tucked the ball into the net on a penalty kick that was awarded following a rather clumsy challenge by Dave Hleucka on Westside's veteran striker, Alex Percy. The goal seemed to spark Surrey United and shortly thereafter the home team was back on level terms when Shawn Blakeway headed down a Craig Dalrymple free kick for Michael Evans to head past Westside's goalkeeper Mike Wicken. The second half turned out to be a very exciting affair with plenty of goal scoring chances as both teams threw caution to the wind in search of the victory. Westside again took the lead at the 65th minute mark when Nenad Stojanovic made the most of some poor marking and headed home a well-flighted Mike Mosher free kick. United's coach, Martin Foden, responded by bringing on veteran Joe Deacon in his first appearance in quite some time. The substitution paid immediate dividends as Deacon dribbled past two opponents before hammering a low shot from outside the penalty box, a shot that eluded the outstretched fingertips of Mike Wicken. Westside came storming back in search of the game winner and United had to thank goalkeeper Drew Smiley for keeping the score level with a couple of phenomenal saves. Then, with about 10 minutes remaining in regulation time, Surrey youngster Sean Kelly seized the moment as he caught Mike Wicken off his line with a cheeky chip shot that the goalkeeper could barely get a hand on before it sailed over his head and into the net. The go-ahead goal set the stage for some frantic action in the last 10 minutes as Westside threw everything at the Surrey defence but once again were unable to beat Drew Smiley who came up with some huge saves to protect the slim lead. The final whistle could not come soon enough for the Surrey squad who showed some great resilience in twice coming back from one-goal deficits.

On Wednesday evening, at Brandrith Park in Tsawwassen, the VMSL all-star team gave the Vancouver Whitecaps everything they could handle in a well-played and thrilling exhibition game in front of some 1500 enthusiastic spectators. The quality of the soccer was outstanding as both teams displayed their considerable skills throughout the match. The Whitecaps, with no less than 7 VMSL players in their line-up, took the lead at the 15th minute mark when a cross from the left wing found David Morris completely unmarked for a simple tap-in from close range. The Whitecaps' Carlo Corazzin looked to be their most dangerous attacker but was kept off the score sheet by some excellent defending from Steve Millar and Tony Gaita as well as some great goalkeeping from Cory Breure. The VMSL all-stars almost levelled the score when Mike Gomes made a great run from the back before hammering a wicked left foot shot to the top corner only to have his Sporting Club team mate Alex Marques pull off a fantastic save. Steve Millar finally tied the score late in the first half as he took advantage of some poor Whitecap defending on a corner kick. The quality of the football continued to be terrific in the second half as the Whitecaps once again took the lead when newly signed Kevin Harmse blasted a long range shot past Didar Sandhu. The all-stars responded strongly and were almost rewarded when Tiernan King made a great solo run past two defenders before driving a powerful shot past Marques only to see the woodwork prevent what would have been a well-deserved goal. Forward Peter Bergholz was also unlucky on two separate occasions as, first, his fierce shot sailed just wide of the post, and then he had a great header saved by Marques. Late in the match, the Whitecaps delivered the killer punch when David Morris rose majestically to powerfully head home a well-placed corner kick. Overall, it was a terrific night of football with some excellent performances by both teams. If truth be told, the 3-1 score flattered the Whitecaps as the VMSL all-stars played well enough to take home a tie. Congratulations should be extended to the Tsawwassen Soccer Club executive for organizing this wonderful event.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED for its exciting and hard-fought 3-2 victory over Westside Rino. As a result of the victory, the Cloverdale team wins its second Premier Division title in 3 years.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Surrey United's goalkeeper DREW SMILEY for his amazing performance in his team's 3-2 victory over the ever powerful Westside Rino. Smiley pulled off some phenomenal saves to lead his team to victory. For his efforts, SMILEY wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-04-22. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

I had a very good look at the supposed 'rather clumsy challenge' and I can definitely say I...errr he didn't fcuking touch him. Alex tripped over his own size 12's and ran into errr.. the back who had already majestically rose up to head away the cross and Percy fell and yelped like a bloody dog. Even if it didn't look like that it was the third time a Westside player looked like they FONSACAED in the box in the first half.

The clumsy challenge came later, but it was at the top of the box.

PROVINCE CUP -- ROUND 1 -- 2004-04-19

The first round of the Province Cup playdowns produced few, if any surprises as 5 VMSL teams battled their way to the quarter-finals. Not surprisingly, the 3 VMSL teams that were eliminated (Metro-Ford, SportsTown, and Sporting Club) were defeated by league-mates Westside, Surrey United, and ICSF respectively.

The battle for the Provincial Cup began on Saturday at the brand new Heritage Woods field in Port Moody where the Metro-Ford Wolves hosted Westside Rino. The game was a typical Wolves - Westside match with both teams giving their all from start to finish. The result was also a typical Wolves - Westside one as Rino's boys once again prevailed by a 2-0 score. Young Nenad Stojanovic opened the scoring midway through the first half when he took advantage of a Metro-Ford defensive miscue to hammer home a well-placed shot from the edge of the penalty area. Very late in the game, Westside was awarded a penalty kick that resulted in one of the best saves seen in this part of the soccer world when young Mathew Bird dove brilliantly to stop a well-driven shot by Marcus Felderer. Shortly thereafter, after Metro-Ford had missed a couple of glorious opportunities to tie the game, veteran Craig Chiasson unleashed the shot of the season, from well outside the penalty area, to beat Bird and put the game out of the Wolves' reach. Defensively, Westside's Mike Mosher had an excellent game, while another veteran, Colin Pettingale, controlled the midfield with poise, skill, and composure. For the Metro-Ford, young defender Brook Scott and forward Jamie Fletcher worked hard throughout the match in a losing cause.

On Sunday, at Burnaby Lake Park, Surrey United advanced to the quarter-finals as a result of a hard-fought, but well-deserved, 1-0 victory over SportsTown Firemen. The defending Province Cup champions were full value for the victory as the margin could have been greater based on the balance of play and the scoring opportunities. Veteran Joe Deacon fired a shot just wide of the net early in the match and subsequently saw SportsTown goalkeeper Mike Frank make a phenomenal save to deny him yet another scoring chance. United continued to dominate in the second half as Cory Janzen missed a couple of great goalscoring opportunities. Surrey's patience paid off at the 83rd minute mark when substitute Darren Villars rose magnificently at the far post to head home Robbie Wilson's right wing cross. It should be noted that Surrey's centre-back, Martin Schafer, kept 'GOLDEN BOOT AWARD' winner Peter Bergholz at bay with some brilliant defensive work. As a result of the victory, Surrey United will now play against Westside Rino on Sunday at Todd Field (UBC) at 2 p.m. This will mark the third time this season that these two teams have faced off in important clashes. Surprisingly, Surrey United has won both previous matches--the Imperial Cup semi-final and the League Championship final.

A double-header took place on Sunday at Adanac Park where ICSF Inter defeated the struggling Sporting Club 3-0 and the Sapperton Rovers disposed of Golden Ears Ultra by the same score. Inter opened the scoring early in the match when Filippo Zaurrini blew by 2 defenders before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Mike Halford. After applying most of the pressure in the first half, ICSF continued to dominate in the second half and was rewarded when young Tino Cucca blasted a volley by Halford at about the 60th minute mark. Sporting responded tenaciously and almost got on the score sheet when Paulo Almeida was first denied by goalkeeper Dennis Kindel and then hit the goal-post with a vicious drive that had Kindel beaten. However, late in the match, another youngster, Brian VanSchagen, put the icing on the cake when he beat a couple of defenders before placing the ball in the back of the net. Inter will now face the revitalized Sapperton Rovers in the next round. The Rovers had no difficulty whatsoever in disposing of the outmatched Golden Ears Ultra. In fact, the 3-0 final score rather flatters the Maple Ridge team as Sapperton controlled the play from beginning to end. Veteran Kevin Hearne, flown in from the interior, made one of his infrequent appearances and immediately made an impact as he scored the first goal of the match at the 7th minute mark. After missing numerous glorious scoring opportunities, the Rovers finally added the second goal midway through the second half when young Robert Sing took a pass from veteran Mike Favaro and pounded a vicious shot past the Golden Ears goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area. Another veteran, Ted Ullrich, put the final result out of doubt when he was able to outrace the Maple Ridge defenders before depositing the ball in the back of the net. Defenders Sven Wagner and Brian Donald, as well as forward Trevor Todd also played very well for Sapperton. As a sidenote, the ICSF Inter - Sapperton Rovers quarter-final match will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Adanac Park.

Also on Sunday, Pegasus FC had to travel to the unfriendly confines of Victoria to take on Gordon Head FC. It is never easy to win in Victoria, but Pegasus played one of its best games of the season and came home with a well-earned 3-1 victory. Mike Dodd headed home the first goal at the 18th minute mark when he brilliantly converted a well-taken corner kick by Gavin Frey. Pegasus then survived a great deal of Gordon Head pressure, mostly because of the fantastic goalkeeping by Steve London. Early in the second half Nico Berg set up Rob Reed for what proved to be the winning goal. Gordon Head made things uncomfortable when they scored from a free kick midway through the second half. Shortly thereafter, Pegasus had a golden opportunity to restore the 2-goal margin when they were awarded a penalty kick. Unfortunately, and uncharacteristically, Mike Dodd had his shot saved by the Victoria goalkeeper. Very late in the match young Stedman Espinoza finally put the game out of Gordon Head's reach when he converted a brilliant pass from Laurent Scaligine into the insurance marker. In the next round, Pegasus will take on PoCo Dominion of the Fraser Valley Soccer League.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: PEGASUS FC for its exciting and hard-fought 3-1 victory over Gordon Head. It is never easy to win a Province Cup game in Victoria, but Pegasus managed to do just that in fine fashion. As a result of the victory, the North Shore team advances to the quarter-finals of the Province Cup.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ICSF Inter's TINO CUCCA for his brilliant performance in his team's convincing 3-0 victory over Sporting Club. Cucca scored twice (although one of the goals was called back) to lead the way to Inter's fine victory. For his excellent effort, CUCCA wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-04-29. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

No offence here Regs or Peg or even Inters Tino, BUT ARE YOU FCUKING KIDDING ME AZZI? And how is it Sapperton is all of a sudden revitalized after beating a valley side 3-0?

I love this one...
(although one of the goals was called back)
I think the top three in the scoring race would be a lot different if you counted all the goals guys put in after the wishtle or that were called back. How does this even become a factor? Crazy!

One of our best games of the season though is way off, believe me

We should make it another TOTW coming up if we manage to get a good result against a very tough Poco side.

Underdogs,

~Regs.

PROVINCE CUP -- ROUND 2 -- 2004-04-26

Three VMSL teams made it to the semi-finals of the 2004 Province Cup, while two others--including defending champions Surrey United--were eliminated. Thus the final four include Westside Rino, ICSF Inter, and Pegasus FC from the VMSL and Victoria Gorge FC from the Vancouver Island Soccer League. The semi-finals will be held on Sunday, May 9 at Town Centre Stadium in Coquitlam with ICSF playing against Pegasus FC in the opening match at 12 noon and Westside facing off against Gorge FC at 2:30 p.m.

On Friday evening, at Gates Park in Port Coquitlam, Pegasus FC took on PoCo Dominion, one of the top teams in the Fraser Valley Soccer League. Pegasus took an early 2-0 lead on goals by young Stedman Espinoza and veteran Mike Dodd and coasted the rest of the way. Espinoza scored the opening goal 7 minutes into the game when he stole the ball from a PoCo defender and then fired a wicked shot past Dominion's fine veteran goalkeeper Joel Logan. Soon thereafter, after some excellent work by Randy Celebrini, Mike Dodd picked up the rebound from Celebrini's shot and made no mistake as he gave his team a 2-0 lead. Pegasus continued to press and could easily have scored a few more goals had it not been for Logan's phenomenal goalkeeping. PoCo made the final 2-1 score look respectable with a very late marker on practically the last kick of the match.

On Sunday, at UBC's Todd Field, Westside Rino evened the score with defending Province Cup champions Surrey United by virtue of a hard-fought, but well-deserved 1-0 victory. After a scoreless--and evenly played--first half, Rino's boys took control of the situation in the second half by outplaying the visitors in most aspects of the game. Westside's hard work finally paid off midway through the second half when a well taken corner kick by veteran Craig Chiasson found an unmarked "super-veteran" Alex Percy at the far post. Percy made no mistake on the header and scored the match's lone goal. The Westside backline--composed of veterans Boban Aleksic, Martin Best, Mike Mosher, and Jason Small was virtually impenetrable and made life very easy for goalkeeper Mike Wicken. Midfielders Colin Pettingale, Markus Felderer, and young Steve Deblasio also played extremely well for the winners. Surrey United's Martin Schaefer was a tower of strength on defence, while forward Shawn Blakeway and midfielder Cory Janzen also turned in stellar performances in a losing cause. Westside thus avenges two previous important losses to Surrey United, one in the Imperial Cup semi-final and the other in the Premier Division championship game.

Also on Sunday, at Adanac Park in Vancouver, ICSF Inter and the Sapperton Rovers engaged in a very entertaining and hard-fought contest that finally resulted in a 2-1 victory for ICSF. Both teams traded early chances with Inter's Brian VanSchagen and Sapperton's Paul Favaro coming extremely close to scoring the opening goal. ICSF's young forward, Tino Cucca, was a thorn on the side of the Sapperton defenders for the entire match and, early in the second half, was taken down in the penalty area after making a great penetrating run. Tony Gaita converted the penalty kick to give Inter a 1-0 lead. Soon thereafter, Tom Adamson took advantage of a Sapperton defensive miscue to set up Joseph Marrello for what proved to be the winning goal. Very late in the match, Paul Favaro finally scored the Rovers' lone goal on a well-executed penalty kick. Despite the heart-breaking loss Mike Favaro, Paul Favaro, Ted Ullrich, and Brian Donald had excellent games for Sapperton.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: WESTSIDE RINO for its clinical performance in its 1-0 victory over Surrey United. Rino's boys thus avenge two previous important losses to the same Surrey team: the first in the Imperial Cup semi-final and the other in the VMSL Premier Division championship match. As a result of the victory, Westside advances to the semi-finals of the Province Cup against Victoria Gorge FC.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ICSF Inter's TINO CUCCA for his brilliant performance in his team's narrow 2-1 victory over the Sapperton Rovers. Cucca was a going concern all game long, driving Sapperton's defenders to distraction with his clever play and endless energy. This marks the second consecutive week that Cucca has been named 'Player of the Week'. For his excellent performance, CUCCA wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-05-06. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

PROVINCE CUP SEMI-FINALS -- 2004-05-10

The two Province Cup semi-finals were played on Sunday at Town Centre Stadium with the VMSL being represented by 3 teams. One minor upset occurred as a much more experienced Pegasus FC squad took care of the younger, fitter, but less experienced ICSF Inter. The final score of 3-1 in Pegasus' favour was quite indicative of the flow of the match as the North Shore/Surrey team had much more ball possession and certainly more scoring chances. The fact that Inter finished in first place in the Group 'A' standings and that Pegasus could only muster a 5th place finish in the same group, did not seem to matter in the least. In fact, Pegasus took control of the match right from the opening whistle, scored after only 4 minutes of play and controlled most of the remainder of the match. The first goal was the result of a well-placed corner kick by Ryan Powell--one of the few youngsters in the Pegasus line-up--that was inadvertently deflected into his own net by Tony Gaita--of the few veterans in the ICSF roster! Pegasus continued to take the game to Inter and almost made it 2-0 when Randy Celebrini's great header hit the goal post with goalkeeper Denis Kindel beaten. Very late in the first half, Brian VanSchagen restored parity when he unleashed one of his patented left-footed free kicks from all of 30 metres. Steve London, Pegasus' fine goalkeeper, had no chance on the shot as it sailed past him into the top corner of the net. One would have thought that the goal would have motivated and inspired ICSF but the reverse actually occurred as Pegasus came out of the second half starting blocks with a vengeance. Again, very early in the half, Pegasus took the lead as veteran Mike Dodd scored the easiest goal of his career as he headed home a deflected cross from Laurent Scaligine. Pegasus put the game out of reach midway through the second half when Paul Dailly's corner kick was flicked on by Nico Berg onto the path of Darin Burr who quickly blasted the ball into the ICSF net. Inter tried to fight back and actually had a couple of scoring chances late in the game but it was obviously Pegasus' day. Defender Darin Burr was named the Most Valuable Player of the match and received a gift certificate from the GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE` for his efforts.

The second match was not as entertaining as the opener as Westside Rino hung on for a rather uneventful 2-1 decision over the visiting Victoria Gorge FC. Westside suffered a major setback when veteran goalkeeper Mike Wicken was injured early in the contest. Veteran Martin Best had to fill in for Wicken and, despite his obvious lack of goalkeeping experience, did an admirable job. Late in the first half, a couple of veterans--Mike Mosher and Craig Chiasson--combined for the game's opening goal. In fact, Mosher's long cross from the left side of the pitch found an unmarked Chiasson in the Gorge penalty area. Chiasson made no mistake as he headed the ball home past Gorge's goalkeeper Conor Quin. Midway through the second half, young John Chou sent Steve Dickinson flying down the right flank with a brilliant pass. Dickinson calmly slotted home what proved to be the winning goal. Very late in the contest, Victoria's Brent Garraway scored on a goal-mouth scramble to give his team a bit of hope, but it was too little, too late for the former BC Province Cup champions. It should be noted that Martin Best, playing in his first game as a goalkeeper, made a few outstanding saves to preserve his team's victory. For his efforts, Best was named the match's Most Valuable Player and received a gift certificate from SOCCER CITY. Therefore, Westside Rino will now take on Pegasus FC in the Province Cup final on Saturday, May 15 at Swangard Stadium. Kick-off is 4 p.m. The game will be the preliminary to the Vancouver Whitecaps - Calgary match.

The Under 21 Provincial Cup final was also held this past weekend at Town Centre Stadium in Coquitlam. The game featured the Norvan Saints of the VMSL and the Port Moody Gunners of the FVSL. The 1-0 final result in Norvan's favour seemed to favour Port Moody somewhat as the Saints controlled most of the play and fully deserved the victory. Trevor Luc**** scored the lone goal of the contest midway through the second half. This marks the fourth year in a row that a VMSL team has won the Under 21 Provincial Cup!

fcuk me, after all the bullshit and crow pie, he still thinks Inter won Side A!

TEAM OF THE WEEK: PEGASUS FC for its outstanding performance in the 3-1 victory over ICSF Inter in the Province Cup semi-final. Pegasus FC thus qualifies for the final against Westside Rino. The game will be played on Saturday, May 15 at 4:00 p.m. at Swangard Stadium--prior to the Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Calgary match.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Westside's MARTIN BEST for his amazing performance in his team's 2-1 victory over Victoria Gorge FC. Best entered the game midway through the first half when regular goalkeeper Mike Wicken had to be substituted due to an injury. Best, who had never played in goal in his life, made 3 or 4 outstanding saves to guide his team to victory. For his excellent performance, BEST wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-05-20. It's nice to know that Azzi knows how the goals are scored even when he's there. If I recall I think it was Chiasson, maybe that other guy he mentioned, but this player made a run down the left side and whipped in a low cross which Dickinson poked in at the near post. That was the game winner, but he did make the right choice in giving Besty the player of the week. And total B.S. on the u-21 game as Port Moody had the better chances, and Norvan had a slight edge in possesion and Moody coughed the ball up and got scored on. Oh well there only one Azzi, can anyone else take over already?
