Azzi's Side of the Story

Week #4 of the 2003-04 season produced a couple of upsets and, as a result, a tightening up of the races at the top and at the bottom of both groups. The major upset took place on Sunday at Beaconfield Park when the upstart Sapperton Rovers disposed of the heavily-favoured ICSF Inter by a 1-0 score in a hard-played, intense game. The narrow field seemed to suit the Rovers' style better as Inter was unable to exhibit its patented passing skills. Both teams missed breakaway chances in the first half, but it was Sapperton that took the lead at the 18th minute mark, when veteran Ted Ullrich, on a long cross from Paul Favaro, half-volleyed an unstoppable shot into the corner of the ICSF net.

What will WAB and Zurrini think about this, I guess we don't want to play Inter on a Wide Pitch, but it is the way to go against Sap.
Got it.

Ted must have had a "superlative performance".

There is more now.... Azzi types like I do.

PART 2 Another upset took place on Sunday in a Group 'A' game played at Kinsman Stadium in North Vancouver. The Metro-Ford Wolves and Pegasus FC gave the numerous fans in attendance a lot to cheer about during 90 minutes of non-stop action. The nail-biter ended in Metro-Ford's favour by a 4-3 score. Former professional Mike Dodd gave Pegasus the early lead when he capitalized on a Metro-Ford defensive blunder to put the ball in the net from a goal-mouth scramble. Soon thereafter, defensive stalwart Elliott Smith restored parity with a great header from a cross by Adrian Sheriff. Metro-Ford took the lead at the stroke of half-time when Ryugo Fusa outraced the entire Pegasus defensive core before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Steven London. Midway through the second half, Pegasus tied the game when defender Gavin Frey blasted a 20-metre free kick past veteran goalkeeper David Sherle. Two more rapid-succession goals brought the score to 3-3 as Metro-Ford's Kevin Todd and Pegasus' Frank Lore hit the back of the net. A very late goal by Kevin Todd, his second of the game, on a wonderful set-up by Jeff Roberts and Donald Kambere, gave the Wolves the victory in a well-played game. Metro-Ford's Steve Mitchell deserves a special mention as he kept Pegasus' vaunted forward, Laurent Scaligine, at bay during the entire match. As a result of the victory, Metro-Ford now shares second place in the Group 'A' standings with Pegasus and Westside Rino.

"Ullrich spoiled an otherwise superlative performance when, early in the second half, he got involved in a scuffle with Inter's Brian VanSchagen, an altercation that resulted in both players being sent off by referee Gerry Proctor."

Too funny.

Part 3 just for Smallsy. :D In the third Group 'A' match, Rino Orsato's perennial powerhouse team--Westside Rino--stuttered a bit and settled for a lacklustre 1-1 tie with Indo FC. Westside scored midway through the first half when Nenad Stojanovic converted a rebound off a Jason Small shot and tapped in his second goal of the season. Very late in the match, Todd Gronlund scored the equalizer for Indo FC on a goalmouth scramble.

Two Group 'B' title contenders, Trollers FC and Sporting Club, settled for a 2-2 tie in a game played on Saturday at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver. The single point did neither team any good, as Surry United catapulted ahead of both teams by virtue of their 2-1 victory over Clan Alumni. Sporting took the early lead on a goal by Paulo Almeida but the Trollers equalized late in the first half when defender Matt Judd's rare overhead shot found the back of the net. Rick Marando gave the Trollers the lead midway through the second half only to see Almeida restore parity very late in the match.

On Monday evening, at Queen's Park Stadium in New Westminster, Surrey United climbed into first place in the Group 'B' table by virtue of a hard-earned, but well-deserved 2-1 victory over the newly-promoted (and last place) Clan Alumni. After a scoreless first half, a half which saw Surrey United's young goalkeeper Jason McKenzie make a brilliant penalty kick save, Shawn Blakaway gave the visiting team the lead. The 1-0 lead lasted until the dying moments of the match, when Clan Alumni's Neal Yeung was able to beat McKenzie for the equalizer. As the fans were getting ready to leave the stadium, United's Todd Stauber used his renowned speed to outrace Clan's defenders and score the winner.

In the weekly cross-over game, SportsTown Firemen beat the Burnaby Canadians 2-0 to lay claim on first place in Group 'A'. SportsTown got goals from Peter Berholtz and Dan Kirincic to seal away the victory over the under-manned Canadians. The final game of the Week #4 schedule saw Columbus FC and Khalsa SC tie 0-0 in a rather uneventful affair.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SAPPERTON ROVERS for their excellent performance in defeating heavily-favoured ICSF Inter by a 1-0 score.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: PAULO ALMEIDA of Sporting Club for his two very important goals in the game against Trollers FC. As a result of the two goals, Almeida climbs in first place in the race for the 'GOLDEN BOOT' award. For his efforts, Almeida will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The pizza must be consumed on the premises and is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-10-27.

Big press for "Mighty" Khalsa. :D

Are you kidding me? Renowned speed? Kids wearing ice skates in the parking lot move faster than Todd. :D

WEEK #6 -- 2003-10-15

Pegasus FC took over sole possession of first place in the Group 'A' standings of the Premier Division by virtue of a hard-fought 2-1 decision over their nearest rivals, Westside Rino. The match, played on Sunday at Hillcrest Park in Vancouver, was a see-saw battle featuring some exciting end-to-end action and numerous scoring chances. Westside took the early lead when Markus Felderer chipped a shot from just outside the box over the head of young goalkeeper Sean Perry. Pegasus came storming back and was rewarded when Laurent Scaligine neatly tucked away a brilliant pass from Adam Costley, beating Westside's veteran goalkeeper Mike Wicken. Shortly thereafter, Ryan Powell unleashed a left-footed blast that forced Wicken to make a fabulous save. Unfortunately for Westside, the rebound fell right on the path of veteran Frank Lore that easily scored what proved to be the winner. The second half featured a lot of pressure by Westside in search of the equalizer, an equalizer that never materialized due mainly to Pegasus' strong defensive display. The victory leaves the North Shore/Surrey team alone in first place, 3 point ahead of Westside and SportsTown.

On Friday evening, at Mundy Park in Coquitlam, SportsTown Firemen failed to take over sole possession of second place when they were held to a 1-1 tie by the host Metro-Ford Wolves. SportsTown had a lot of the play in the first half while the Wolves controlled most of the action in the second 45 minutes of play. SportsTown capitalized on a defensive miscue to take the lead late in the first half when Chris Jarvie raced in all alone and easily beat veteran goalkeeper Dave Sherle with a well-placed, far post shot. The second half was a complete reversal of the first as Metro-Ford created numerous scoring chances but was able to capitalize on only one of them when defender Dustin VanLeeuwen capped off an impressive individual performance by scoring the tying goal on a goal mouth scramble. Whitecaps' Jeff Skinner and Andrew Veer made auspicious returns to the amateur ranks for SportsTown and Metro-Ford respectively.

Also in Group 'A' action, Indo FC climbed out of last place by defeating the Sapperton Rovers by a rather decisive 2-0 score. Paul Bahia, Jr., on a brilliant shot from the edge of the penalty area, and Karm Lidder, on an excellent individual effort, scored the goals for the newly-promoted Richmond team. As a result of the loss the Rovers now find themselves in last place in the Group 'A' table.

In the weekly cross-over match, Group 'A' once again prevailed over Group 'B' as ICSF Inter clearly defeated Sporting Club 3-1. Steve Kindel, yet another Whitecap playing in the VMSL, made a successful seasonal debut by scoring twice, while young Tom Adamson added a goal of his own to the winning cause. Sporting's only goal came as a result of an inadvertent own goal by ICSF's Ivan Lee. Sporting and Inter now find themselves in the middle of the pack in Group 'B' and Group 'A' respectively.

In Group 'B', Columbus FC won its first game of the season by defeating the slumping Burnaby Canadians by a clear-cut 2-0 margin. Columbus got two goals from young sensation Alex Elliott en route to the upset victory. Also in Group 'B', Khalsa SC continued to show improvement and, as a result, climbed closer to the top of the table by defeating the winless, and pointless, Clan Alumni by a 4-2 margin. Khalsa got two goals from Dave Mori and singletons by Jas Atwal and Marcelo Giunto to seal the victory. Aaron Keay and Whitecap Tieran King replied for the Clan. The other Group 'B' game, between Trollers FC and Surrey United, was postponed due the fact that Surrey United was participating in the Canadian National championships in Quebec City. It should be noted that Surrey United won the bronze medal in the very competitive tournament.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: PEGASUS FC for its 2-1 victory over Westside Rino. The victory gives Pegasus sole possession of first place in Group 'A' of the VMSL Premier Division.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ALEX ELLIOTT for his brilliant two goals that permitted his team, Columbus FC, to win its first game of the season against the Burnaby Canadians. For his efforts, Elliott will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The pizza must be consumed on the premises and is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-11-12.

Surrey brings home the bronze and gets a fleeting mention whilst Peg takes home TOW for their win over Westside. Guess we know where the REAL national championship was being played.;)

WEEK #8 -- 2003-10-29

The VMSL returned to action this past weekend after torrential downpours caused the postponement of all Premier Division games in week #7. Week #8 provided some more interesting results, particularly in Group 'A' of the Premier Division. It is hard to imagine, but all 7 teams in this division are now within 4 points of each other! In other words, all of them are still in contention for the divisional title and all of them are still battling to avoid relegation. Group 'B', on the other hand, tells a completely different story as 13 points (and possibly 16 if Surrey United wins its make-up game) separate the top teams from the winless (and pointless) Clan Alumni.

The weekend's activities began on Friday evening at Newton Athletic Park where the home team--Pegasus FC-- was trying to hold on to its undisputed claim on first place. The opponents, SportsTown Firemen, would have none of that and came away with a well-deserved and emphatic 3-0 victory. Spencer Coppin gave SportsTown the early lead and young Jeff Buchanan and, even younger, Lucas Barrett added to the margin of victory in the second half. It should be mentioned that SportsTown goalkeeper Mike Franks was called upon to make a sensational save early in the second half, a save that probably changed the balance of the match. The SportsTown victory puts the Firemen in a first place tie with Pegasus in the Group 'A' standings.

In another semi-upset, the Sapperton Rovers demolished the once powerful Westside Rino by a very convincing 3-0 margin in a match played on Saturday at Queen's Park Stadium. The Rovers took a very early lead when veteran Paul Favaro's diving header--on a great cross from Trevor Todd--found the back of the net. Luke Hogan added to the lead before the halftime whistle when he blasted a rocket from the edge of the box past Westside's veteran goalkeeper Mike Wicken. Favaro put the icing on the cake with his second goal midway through the second half. Sapperton goalkeeper Kent Waechter recorded his third consecutive shutout as the Rovers climbed out of last place in the Group 'A' standings. Westside, on the other hand, now finds itself near the bottom of the table.

On Sunday, at Adanac Park in Vancouver, the Metro-Ford Wolves avenged an earlier loss to ICSF Inter by edging the home team 1-0 after a very entertaining 90 minutes of play. Both teams had numerous opportunities to score but it was left up to Whitecap Andrew Veer to head home the winner early in the second half on a well-taken corner kick by veteran Jeff Roberts. Metro-Ford's young goalkeeper Mathew Bird recorded his first shutout in senior competition, while defensively Richard Price and John Price were towers of strength. For ICSF, defender Scott Spracklin was virtually unbeatable and midfielder VJ Kos stood out with his poise and composure. The result places ICSF in last place in the Group 'A' table--an unprecedented occurrence. The Wolves, on the other hand, climb to the middle of the table in the tightest standings seen in years.

In the weekly cross-over match, Indo FC of Group 'A' edged Columbus FC of Group 'B' by a narrow and hard-fought 2-1 margin. Newly signed Whitecap Oliver Heald was a standout for Indo FC, scoring a goal and generally dictating the pace of the match with his hard work and fine passing. Karm Lidder scored the other Indo FC goal, while 16-year old Alex Elliott replied for Columbus. It should be mentioned that Elliott is one of the youngest players in the VMSL and is now all alone in first place--with 6 goals--in the race for the Golden Boot Award. As a result of the victory, Indo FC climbs to within 2 points of first place--but still only 2 points out of relegation! On the other hand, the loss leaves Columbus in penultimate place in the Group 'B' table, 4 points ahead of Clan Alumni.

On Saturday, at Riverway Park in Burnaby, the defending Province Cup champions Surrey United played its first VMSL game since its return from the nationals and had to settle for a 1-1 tie against the host Burnaby Canadians. Surrey strikers Shawn Blakeway and Todd Stauber each had great opportunities to score early in the match but were thwarted by some fine goalkeeping from Cory Breure. Burnaby took the lead against the run of play midway through the first half when defender Ed Bradford outjumped the Surrey defenders to head home to go-ahead goal. The Canadians seemed content to defend their slim lead and absorbed some tremendous pressure from the visiting team. Cory Janzen had the best chance for the equalizer as his shot rocketed off the crossbar. Late in the match, Surrey finally got the tying goal when substitute Rob Wilson headed home a Clayton Dobbin corner kick As a result of the tie, Surrey United now shares first place in the Group 'B' standings with Khalsa SC--albeit with a game in hand.

In other Group 'B' matches, Sporting Club edged the winless Clan Alumni 2-1 and Khalsa SC climbed into a first place tie with Surrey United by beating Trollers FC 3-2. Sporting Club got goals by Steve Dormer and veteran Carlos Batista in its victory over Clan Alumni. Another veteran, Romeo Cuter, replied for the last place Clan. Khalsa's Dave Mori notched a couple of markers while Jas Atwal scored what proved to be the winner. The Trollers replied with goals by Willie Cromack and Bevan Footman (on a penalty kick).

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SPORTSTOWN FIREMEN for its impressive 3-0 victory over Pegasus FC. The victory gives SportsTown a share of first place in Group 'A' of the VMSL Premier Division.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: PAUL FAVARO for his brilliant two goals that permitted his team, Sapperton Rovers, to defeat Westside Rino and thus climb out of last place in the Group 'A' standings. For his efforts, Favaro will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The pizza must be consumed on the premises and is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-11-19

The 'veteran' word count..........

Write-up:
2003-10-15- 3 uses of the word veteran
2003-10-29- an astonishing 5 uses of the word veteran.

Far be it for me to suggest synonyms to the cunning linguist who writes this piffle but allow me to suggest some synonyms to the cunning linguist who writes this piffle.......

Entry: veteran
Function: noun

Synonyms: master, old dog, old guard, old hand, old pro, old salt, old soldier, old-timer, oldster, past master, past mistress, pro, shellback, sourdough, sport, trouper, vet, warhorse , battle-scarred, been around, been there, disciplined, exercised, expert, hardened, hip, inured, kicked around, long-serving, long-time, old , old-time, practical, practiced, pro, proficient, seasoned, skilled, sophisticated, steady, trained, versed, vet, weathered , wise, wised up, worldly.

OLD

How many games or years do you have to play to be considered a Veteran.

I am still a little confused about this Young Veteran catagory.
