I think any post involving Snapperton could involve using all three bold faced synonyms. Like for instance "Sapperton's old weathered warhorses." I dunno just a thought.

WEEK #9 -- 2003-11-05

Things appear to settle down a bit in Group 'A' of the Premier Division as Pegasus FC lay claim to undisputed possession of first place with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Indo FC. This means that the difference between first place and last place is now 6 points as opposed to only 4 points at the end of last week. The Pegasus - Indo game took place on Sunday at King George Park in Richmond and, overall, it was a rather drab affair. The one exception was Randy Celebrini's brilliant goal early in the second half. Celebrini took the ball well within Pegasus' own half of the field, made a remarkable run down the left wing, beat at least four defenders before tucking the ball neatly behind Indo's fine goalkeeper, Didar Sandhu. While the victory solidifies Pegasus' hold on first place, it leaves Indo FC near the bottom of the table, only one point out of last place.

Also on Sunday, two other Group 'A' games were played. The first, between Westside Rino and ICSF Inter, saw the Italian team climb out of last place with a convincing 3-0 drubbing of the host team. Inter took an early lead on Sal Cuccione's goal and never looked back from that point on. Cuccione scored again before the halftime whistle and Brian VanSchagen added another ICSF goal in the second half. The loss leaves Westside in last place, the first time that has happened in recent memory! The other Group 'A' game played on Sunday featured SportsTown Firemen and Sapperton Rovers. The Rovers controlled the first half, got an excellent goal from veteran Paul Favaro and then held on for the entire second half at SportsTown applied enormous pressure in a futile attempt to obtain the tying goal. The 1-0 final score flattered Sapperton a tiny bit as SportsTown deserved at least a tie. It should be noted that Sapperton goalkeeper Kent Waechter earned his fourth shutout in the last 5 games. The result leaves both teams at 13 points, 3 behind league-leading Pegasus FC.

On Monday evening at Burnaby Lake's Field Turf, the Burnaby Canadians defeated the Metro-Ford Wolves 3-1 in a cross-over match. Burnaby took the early lead when Gino Gaita beat the offside trap, outraced the Metro-Ford defenders and neatly tucked the ball behind goalkeeper Mathew Bird. Soon thereafter, the Wolves drew level when Andrew Veer received a clever pass from Ryego Fusa and beat Burnaby's goalkeeper Cory Breure to the far post. The second half featured some end-to-end action but it was the Canadians who scored both goals as Gino Gaita got his second from a goalmouth scramble and Mike Gahan added the insurance marker late in the match. For the Canadians, Chris Clemett played extremely well in the middle of the park, while playing-coach Steve Millar added some badly-needed stability to the back line. The victory puts Burnaby in the middle of the pack in Group 'B', while the Wolves are now in penultimate place in Group 'A', only one point out of last place.

In Group 'B' action, on Friday evening at Queen's Part Stadium, Columbus FC and Khalsa SC ignored the Halloween festivities and entertained a sparse crowd with an excellent game of soccer. Columbus climbed out of relegation trouble with a narrow, and hard-fought, 3-2 victory. Khalsa came out of the starting gate with a vengeance and created numerous scoring chances in the early going. Fortunately for Columbus, goalkeeper Luca Dalla Pace was at his best, making some outstanding saves and keeping Khalsa off the scoreboard for the better part of the first half. Khalsa did strike first, however, when Christian Salina finally beat Dalla Pace with an unstoppable shot. Columbus quickly responded and got a goal from young Tyler Rosenlund as he poked in a rebound from a goalmouth scramble. Khalsa came right back and, practically at the halftime whistle, got the go-ahead goal when Marcelo Giunto was able to convert a well-placed cross into the top of the net. Columbus came storming out of the blocks in the second half. and came close to tying the game on several occasions in the early going. Columbus' persistence paid off soon thereafter as veteran leader, Carmine D'Onofrio, blasted a shot past Khalsa's goalkeeper from 20 metres out. D'Onofrio got the winner shortly thereafter as he neatly slotted the ball home from close range. The results prevents Khalsa from gaining first place in the very tight battle atop the Group 'B' table.

The other Group 'B' game, played on Sunday at Hastings Bowl, featured two teams in a battle for first place: Sporting Club and Trollers FC. The 3-0 final score in favour of Sporting Club pretty well tells the tale of the entire match, as the Portuguese club dominated proceedings from start to finish. An impressive performance by the entire midfield, in particular Mike Gomes, was the major reason for Sporting's dominance. Paulo Almeida regained a share of first place in the race for the GOLDEN BOOT AWARD with a fine goal, while Mark Gomes and Carlos Batista notched the other markers. As a result of the victory, Sporting Club is now alone in first place in Group 'B', albeit with two more games played than their nearest rivals, Surrey United. The Surrey team had its game against Clan Alumni postponed due to the untimely death of Clan's defender, Ronale Naidu. The VMSL offers its sincere condolences to the Clan Alumni team and, most importantly, to the Naidu family.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SPORTING CLUB for its impressive 3-0 victory over Trollers FC. The emphatic victory gives Sporting sole possession of first place in Group 'B' of the VMSL Premier Division.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CARMINE D'ONOFRIO for his brilliant two goals that permitted his team, Columbus FC, to defeat the heavily favoured Khalsa SC. With his team down by a goal at halftime, D'Onofrio took over the reins of the team and led them to an impressive victory. For his efforts, D'Onofrio will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The pizza must be consumed on the premises and is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-11-26.

It should be noted that this past week-end saw:

- A brilliant goal (Celebrini's)
- An excellent goal (Favaro's)
- A fine goal (Almeida's)

Unfortunately, there were no superlative goals or the oft-occurring clever goals (just a shitload of clever passes).

Azzi's complex goal-ranking system leads me to believe that we are not far from reading about above-average goals, subpar goals, needs improvement goals, piss-licking-ugly goals, meaningless goals, unachievable goals, long-term financial goals and g-g-g-g-g-goooooooooooals.

It's good to have goals.

WEEK #10 -- 2003-11-12

Things are beginning to look a little clearer at the top of the table in Group 'A' of the Premier Division of VMSL. Pegasus FC has taken over first place and looks like the clear-cut favourite to win the group, while ICSF Inter has strung together a couple of impressive victories to take over undisputed possession of second place. On Friday evening, at Newton Athletic Park, Pegasus and the Sapperton Rovers played a very entertaining and exciting match that ended in a controversial 1-0 victory for the group leaders. In fact, Pegasus was awarded a heavily-contested penalty kick at the 88th minute mark when Laurent Scaligine was brought down inside the Sapperton penalty area. Veteran Whitecap Paul Dailly converted the ensuing penalty kick to give his team the victory. To add fuel to the fire, the Rovers had a goal--by young Adam Steffich--disallowed just before the final whistle when one of their players was judged to have been offside. The loss leaves Sapperton only one point out of last place, while Pegasus now has a 4-point lead at the top of the table.

On Sunday, at Adanac Park, ICSF Inter continued its climb towards the top of the standings by winning its second consecutive match by a decisive margin. After beating Westside Rino 3-0 last week, Inter spanked SportsTown Firemen 4-1 this past Sunday. Brian VanSchagen led the way with two great goals, one of them a 20-metre free kick that sailed into the top corner of the net. Sal Cuccione and Tom Adamson added to the ICSF emphatic margin of victory with goals of their own, while Greg Pears scored SportsTown's lone marker. The victory gives ICSF sole possession of second place in Group 'A', while SportsTown is now only one point out of last place.

In the other Group 'A', played on Sunday at King George Park in Richmond, Indo FC and the Metro-Ford Wolves settled for a 1-1 tie, a tie that neither team cherished. In fact, the single point leaves both teams tied for last place in the standings, one point behind SportsTown, Sapperton, and Westside Rino. Two Whitecap players scored the goals as Oliver Heald gave Indo FC the lead midway through the second half on a well-placed free kick, while Andrew Veer tied things up late in the game on a great 25-metre shot that sailed over the head of former Whitecap goalkeeper Didar Sandhu. Defensively, Elliott Smith was virtually unbeatable for the Wolves, while Ricky Hikita shone for Indo FC.

In Group 'B', Sporting Club edged Surrey United 2-1 and, as a result, remained in first place by a slim margin. Former Surrey United player Ryan Dormer gave Sporting the lead in the first half when he converted a perfect pass from midfielder Mike Gomes. Young Sean Crocker, on a diving header tied the game up for Surrey midway through the second half, only to see Mike Gomes get the winner on a brilliant shot from the edge of the box in the dying moments of the match. Defensively, Sporting's Mark Gomes was a tower of strength throughout the match. As a result, Surrey United is now 4 points behind Sporting Club, albeit with 2 games in hand.

Also in Group 'B' action, Columbus FC and Trollers FC settled for a 1-1 tie after a very physical and exciting 90 minutes of play. Late in the first half the Trollers took the lead on a well-executed free kick by Matthew Pye. Veteran Carmine D'Onofrio re-established parity on a marvellous 20-metre half-volley that stunned the numerous spectators as well as Trollers' fine goalkeeper Marco Durante. The tie leaves both teams near the bottom of the table but well clear of last place since Clan Alumni has yet to earn a point!

The cross-over match saw Westside Rino (of Group 'A') edge pointless Clan Alumni (Group 'B') 3-2 in a match played Sunday at Riverway Park in Burnaby. Westside took the early lead on a goal by Craig Chiasson, but Clan bounced back and got the equalizer on a penalty kick converted by Chris Brown. Veteran Alex Percy and young Alex Kosanin then gave Westside a 2-goal lead only to see Clan fight back with a goal by Whitecap Tiernan King. As a result of the victory, Rino's team is now out of last place, albeit by a single point. In the other match, a Group 'B' affair, Khalsa SC and Burnaby Canadians settled for a listless 0-0 tie.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ICSF INTER for its impressive 4-1 victory over SportsTown Firemen. Last week, Inter had gotten out of its slump by totally outplaying Westside Rino. This week, Inter repeated its feat with a very convincing victory over the tough SportsTown team.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: BRIAN VAN SCHAGEN of ICSF Inter for his two magnificent goals against SportsTown Firemen. The first one, on a 20-metre free kick, was struck with "Del Piero" type precision as it sailed into the top corner of the net. For his efforts, Van Schagen wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-12-03. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

From the excellent site

progress?

This week's trite watch......

Two counts of 'veterans'.
Three counts of 'young'.
One example of a fullback being 'virtually unbeatable' in a 1-1 draw. Presumably the goal scored was what stopped him from being 'unbeatable'.
Clan are pointless. Not very nice, I'm sure they're doing their best.......

Progress I suppose.

Week #11

Just when everyone thought that the situation in Group 'A' was becoming clearer, Week #11 produced 3 more upsets that made everything as complicated as possible. First off, on Friday evening at Mercer Stadium, the Sapperton Rovers upset the red-hot ICSF Inter 1-0. Inter had looked very good in the last couple of games and had drawn close to first place Pegasus. Sapperton, on the other hand, had been near the bottom of the standings since the beginning of the season. It is fair to say, however, that ICSF carried most of the play, particularly in the first half. Nevertheless, it was the Rovers that took the early lead on a well-timed header by Paul Favaro on a corner kick by Luke Hogan. A stellar defensive performance by veteran Brian Donald, coupled with Kent Waechter's 5th shutout of the season, prevented Inter from gaining what would have been a well-deserved draw. As a result, Sapperton now climbs into sole possession of second place, only 3 points behind Pegasus FC. Inter, on the other hand, drops to third place--along with Indo FC and the Metro-Ford Wolves.

Also on Friday evening, at Mundy Park in Coquitlam, the Metro-Ford Wolves once again upset league-leading Pegasus FC, this time by a 2-1 margin. The match was one of the best seen all season as both teams displayed excellent ball skills and a determined will to win. Pegasus took the lead late in the first half, when newly-signed Stedman Espinoza converted an immaculate cross from veteran Frank Lore. The Wolves put on some real pressure during the second half in search of the equalizer and were finally rewarded when Whitecap Andrew Veer was sent in all alone by a great pass from defender Elliott Smith. In the dying moments of the match, substitute Azzad Palani made coach Brad Leitch look like a genius when he raced onto a brilliant through ball by Richard Bodnark, circled around goalkeeper Steve London and calmly scored the winning goal. Young Justin Hebner played remarkably well in the Metro-Ford midfield, while Randy Celebrini had a fine game for Pegasus. The victory puts the Wolves in a third place tie in the standings, while the loss does Pegasus little harm since its nearest rivals at the top of the table also lost.

On Sunday, at Hillcrest Park in Vancouver, Indo FC also climbed out of last place by defeating the heavily-favoured Westside Rino by a narrow 4-3 margin. Indo FC took an early 2-0 lead, allowed Westside to draw near midway through the second half, re-established its 2-goal margin before the halftime whistle and then permitted Rino's team to draw level with two late goals. A clinically-finished goal by veteran Paul Bahia in the dying moments of the game gave Indo FC the hard-fought victory. Karm Lidder scored twice for the winners, while Steve Grewal also scored for Indo FC. Veterans Martin Best, Shawn Bobb, and Alex Percy replied for Westside. Lidder and Whitecap (and former Westside player) Oliver Heald had brilliant games for Indo FC, while newly-signed youngster Steve Deblasio and veteran Colin Pettingale had strong games for Westside. The victory puts Indo FC in a third place tie, while Westside Rino slips into an unfamiliar last place spot.

Just in!!!!!

No player of the weeks or team of the week, must be getting lazy.

Cheers

JB, there is more to come. That happend to me in week two or three , I think. Indo will get the TOTW buy the looks of their upset over "heavily favored" Westside.

3 veterans and it's not even done yet. Not a superlative or emphatic to be seen though...

J_B,

The excellent site adds the rest throughout the day. Why, I don't know, but that's what happens

I'm starting to wonder how accurate these things are though. Our goal was set up by a through ball sent by me to Doddy who knocked a hard ball across the face of the goal where Jinky slotted it home.

And Leitchy looking like a genius? Come on, now! :D

Cheers,

~Regs.

Accuracy

Willi is as accurate as the information he receives from the coaches who talk to him if he hasn't been at the game himself.

Maybe, Regs your coach forgot your brilliance on that goal? Have a word with him!
:p

I realize the info is sent from team management but I would bet $100 that Azzi was at that game himself :D

Maybe it's Randall that is sending in the reports for us since he seems to get singled out everytime he plays :D

Westside

"Westside" and "Major Upset" seem to go hand-in-hand this year.

If Peg or Surrey beats Westside it, too, will be a "Major upset".

It ain't that major anymore.

i don't know where Azzi gets the "heavily favoured Westside" from. we're obviously a cellar dwelling bunch of muckers who having nothing to look forward except retirement or div.1.

p.s. the remainder of the write-up:

In Group 'B' action, Surrey United climbed to within a point of the idle Sporting Club by defeating Trollers FC 2-0 on Wednesday evening at Newton Athletic Park. Surrey got a rather fortunate early goal when the Trollers' goalkeeper cleared the ball against one of his teammates and into the net. Cory Janzen added to the margin of victory with a great effort midway through the second half.

On Sunday, at Hastings Bowl in Vancouver, the Burnaby Canadians and Columbus FC settled for a 2-2 tie. The Canadians took the lead on two separate occasions only to see Columbus restore parity each time. Gino Gaita completed a nifty passing play involving Jeff Shea into the first goal of the game. Young Andrew Proctor tied the game up before the end of the first half when he converted a fine pass from yet another youngster, Alex Elliott. Another excellent passing play resulted in Burnaby's go ahead goal when player/coach Steve Millar set up veteran Ryan McNabb. Columbus got the late equalizer when substitute David Rossi was tripped inside the box. Sixteen-year old Alex Elliott calmly placed the ensuing penalty kick into the bottom right corner of the net. The goal, Elliott's 7th of the season, places the youngster in the lead in the race for the GOLDEN BOOT AWARD.

On Friday evening, at Queen's Park Stadium, Clan Alumni got it first victory of the season by defeating the hot and cold Khalsa SC 2-1. The Clan took an early two-goal lead on goals by Romeo Cuter and Mark Slater, but allowed Khalsa to draw near before the halftime whistle when Jas Atwal netted his 6th goal of the season. Defensively, Khalsa's Surinder Janda was outstanding.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: METRO-FORD WOLVES for their impressive 2-1 victory over league-leading Pegasus FC. This marks the second time this season the Wolves have beaten the heavily-favoured North Shore/Surrey team.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: KARM LIDDER of Indo FC for his two excellent goals against Westside Rino. Lidder's efforts permitted his team to win the game by a narrow 4-3 margin and, as a result, climb out of last place. For his efforts, Lidder wins a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2003-12-10. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.

well deserved POTW for Karm.
