Group A

Shocking! I can't believe France haven't been able to score in 180 minutes -- against Uraguay and Senegal no less!

Group A's up for grabs, I suppose.

France need to win by at least 2 goals against Denmark. They won't do it, and Senegal and Denmark advance.

Could be a potential 4 way tie for first in Group A

If France defeats Denmark and Uruguay beats Senegal then each team has 4 points.

Then we go to goal difference and then goals for.

Good call Slav for the winning by 2 goals, but they won't have Henry, their top striker, to do it. However, Zidane should be back.

Friday's matches

England/Argentina didn't live up to the hype, but Sweden/Nigeria was "simply majestic" (gotta love the British broadcasting).

The English still don't look that impressive. They defended well, but the midfield in my opinion is still below par. With a victory against Senegal they could find them playing Senegal next round. Did anyone see Simeone trying to shake Beckham's hand before the penalty kick? I was surprised to see Danny Mills start, but players gotta love coaches who give them second chances, and he subsequently did quite well (I still don't rate him)

There was just "a little" bit of skill in the Sweden game. Besides Freddie Arsenal and Henrick Celtic I was impressed with that Swensson character in the midfield and JJ Okacha has been a treat top watch.

It's been great to see the Irish do so well............they seem to be quite a cohesive unit inspite of the Roy Keane incident.

Just observing,

Engerland, Engerland, Engerland

Sandman,

I agree with you on most things on this site but this time I have to disagree. Maybe it's the English in me?

I thought the England midfield played extremely well with two players who are less than match fit. Nicky Butt hasn't played that well for club or country and hasn't played a complete game in 5 weeks. He did an unbelievable Stephen Gerard impression that would have Gerard applauding. Beckham is still less than 100% and only getting fitter (nice PK  ). Scholes was class! Sinclair exceeded all expectations. Seeing Danny Mills was a shock but did the job well. Ashley Cole made Ortega look ordinary. Ortega gave the Nigerians fits 5 days ago. Rio Ferdinand was someone I didn't rate but now...

They beat one of the favorites of the tournament and South American champions. Are they now the favorites? No, but definately now a dark horse. They still need to do the business against a good Nigeria side but the chance of playing Senegal rather than France is something England will take. :)

Off to do some studying for up coming midterms.

Come on England

Cheers

We are Lovers, Not FootBallers

Picture of all the French wives and girlfriends in the Paper today, some crackers in the shot. Also saw a pic. of French ladies at one of the training sessions.
This is your problem, keep the ladies at home, get a truck load of Porn, like Brazil did, and get on with footy.

The French are too busy having a holiday with the ladies, than playing at the World Cup, they must have thought the first round would be a cake walk.

Major disapointment:p

Cracker Sweden match this morning, Larson is the King, what kind of Transfer will Celtic be able to get for this guy after the tourney is over.
Larsen playing in the EPL next year, Man U. would fit nice for the Swede who can score with the best of'em.

Could be fun on Commercial drive in the Morning, with Craots and Itals watching the game at opposite ends of the Drive.

Could be a first time there is a Traffic jam on the Drive at 4 AM.

Can't fcuking wait, can't fcuking wait for the big game; Croatia vs. Italy. On one side I think you have a team that has something to prove and should be fired up w/Croatia and then you have an Italian team that palyed well against Eucador. Should be awsome.

Maldini is a question mark for the game. He injured his ankle.

I agree with what you're saying, Butt, Scholes, Sinclair and Beckham played well and more importantly they defended with passion.

All I'm saying is that in the last two games the midfield has lacked any sort of creativity or danger that other teams have displayed in this years tournament. The left flank is weak, I don't know if Sinclair is the answer....I hope he is. When you have a player the calibre of Owen, I think the midfiled has to do a better job of spotting him ie; Butt's through ball on the post Owen hit.

Saying that, I am sure as the tounament goes on they will only become stronger. From past history, winners of the cup never really steamroll from the beginining. Teams usually "snowball" their way to the championship

Ashley Cole has been Englands best player in the last two games, he has been VERY impressive. David Seaman has also been clutch, he has come up with some big stops.

Nonetheless, I'm glad they won! Brazil/England Quarter Final?

Look for Argentina to be going home early via an excellent Swedish team. Larson will terrify Samuel and Cavallaro.

Get your heed outta yur arse

Sandman,
Sweden will become the meatballs that they are... Larrson is good, but Batistuta and Crespo (who should start) will have something to prove and the Argies will pound the Swedes!!!

I agree -- that's a fcuking cool stadium (haven't I seen it somewhere before?). In fact, Schalke 04, in Germany opened their version of the same "removable turf" last year. Unbelivable stuff really -- just as unbelievable that anyone who taped the game should wait to visit that site . . .

Continuing on track . . . I wonder what Hargreaves' status is. I haven't managed to see anything about his injury on soccernet.com yet -- it looked like a calf muscle or thereabouts from what they showed on tv. Anyone?

Too bad about Hargreave's for sure........might be tough to crack a winning lineup too!

I can't remember who started up front with Owen in the Sweden game but thought he was dangerous........far more so than Heskie(sp) Did he pick up a knock or something that I missed?

As for the English side I think it is fair to say that unless Owen finds his scoring form they won't go too far. They are battlers in midfield with Scholes and Butt but don't have the creative flair of other teams. I have to agree that Cole was great and for my money the man of the match.

Lastly, if Beck's doesn't score the peno, would anyone have even known that he played today? His set pieces were nothing to spectacular and he didn't get many touches in the run of the play. I was surprised to hear the possession stats as I thought it was a lot closer up until the last 15 or so when England packed the box and defended(very well mind you!)

Vassell

Good point John... He played much better than Heskey vs the Swedes, although against Argentina the English changed their formation and brought in Butt... Hargrieves will be back in the line up if he is healthy... He has been solid in all area's and is the most versitile player on the squad!!!

As for Beckham, let's be honest he has been involved in both England goals so far and he isn't even fit yet...
Lastly, if Beck's doesn't score the peno, would anyone have even known that he played today?
Give the lad a break, he may not be as dominant as England need him to be to win, but he is still contributing and there is maybe only one or two other players in the world that could do what he can do from a free/corner kick!!!

Granted this should be under the Broadcasters thread, but I don't want to spoil it for others . . .

Did anyone hear Neil McCrae this afternoon (lunch report, I think it was)? He describes Beck's PK as "weak". He suggested that it was poor because of his broken foot. What a fcuking knob.

I thought it was a good strike -- albeit cheeky and daring: straight down the middle in a WC game -- not many players would have tried it.

Guiness,

My point about Beckham was that he hasn't shown much yet in my opinion and was just looking for other's thoughts! And I wasn't looking for an excuse as to why he hasn't done anything.

As for Vassels, I just figured he must have been hurt as he didn't even get a sniff as sub! Surely he played well enough in the first game to come on late and at least put his pace to good use!

Beckham

John,

You're spot-on (excuse the pun) about Beckham. All of the hype drives me nuts. Obviously he has gotten revenge now, but he was as quiet today as he was against the Swedes, except for the penalty and the other chance he had, where if he had anything remotely resembling a left foot, he may have scored. Obviously the lad has a mountain or two on his shoulders and I commend him for the way he handles it all. But soon the fitness thing will not be an excuse any more and he will have to perform. Most likely that he will get stronger and more effective as the tournament, and perhaps England, progresses.

Even when fully Becks is fit though, Owen and Campbell are England's best players ahed of him. They just don't get hyped up as much.

England deserved the win. Rsol and Rio were fantastic and Butt and Owen were very good. Perhaps Cole too. But the rest were just there. Heskey's crap at International level. Sinclair did ok with some running, albeit when the Argies were pushing forward.

Without wanting to take anything away from a very well disciplined England performance, the Argies were very poor today. Even their short passing game was totally off. I was astounded at how bad some of the 10 to 15 yard passes were.

The Sweden v Argies game should be a right corker!!

Portugal vs. Poland

What a come back game for Portugal after the humiliating defeat to USA. This is the true Portugal team to look for and now they hold their own destiny in their hands. With a win over Korea, they are assured a spot in the next round, and with a loss or tie by the States, Portugal reclaims top spot in group D. Told ya it would happen.
