As everyone knows (that really follows football) that the FIFA rankings are meaningless. Hell you have Columbia in the top six!!!

The USA is the one team I wanted to see go down in flames. After the win it was all over CNN. Watch now they are going to be the self proclaimed champions in football too.

Fluke win, early first half nerves by Portugal that cost them the game. S.Korea and Portugal go through to the next phase.

2 CONCACAF Teams taking out two World PowerHouses

That is just after the first games for all groups, what more is to come.

U.S. had some good showings in Tune-Up games before the Cup, one game in particular was U.S. vs Italy, in Italy.

Mexico is allways a frustrating team to play against, espicially in the heat and humidity.

I think that maybe the curse of European teams not fairing well outside of Europe may be showing up in Japan and Korea.

Can all the Concacaf teams make it to the Second Round, that would be great for our Region, perhaps another spot in the near future or a play-off with the lonely Austrailia again.

Don't worry too much

As much as I am disgusted with the USA / Portugal result, don't worry too much. It was only the first game. Portugal never plays well the first half of the first game in any major tornament. In Euro 2000, they were down 2-0 at half to England and came back and one that game 3-2. Just this time dug themselves a hole too deep.

Things will straighten out in the end. Korea and Poland will not take the US lightly and will beat them, Portugal will settle down and move on to the second round, and France will do the same in their group, as well as Croatia. They might not win their respective groups, but they will advance and once past the round robin stage, anything goes.

US: Good Win, Idiotic Responses

Great win for the US that NOBODY expected not even the US team. BUT!! I caught some of the crap Jim Rome or Rhome was saying on 1040 about the US win vs Portugal. What a turd!!!

He was telling the stations down the line that he was going to stay on the air past the end of his show as he wanted to talk soccer. He saying Americans will remember this day forevermore as 6-5. I guess this is a parallel to 9-11 for fcuk sake!

This is the same asshole who was knocking soccer a couple of weeks before the World Cup when he was doing a rant about people not wanting dogmeat hot dogs when they go to Korea.

Jim ROme

I was listening too...

He actually said that "the US win over the Portuguese was as big, if not bigger than the Miracle on Ice."

He said "will be remebered like D-Day"

Are you kidding me?

"proud to be an american today..."

He said a lot of sh*t...

Zaurrini, OUT:rolleyes:

Why is it that he is even talking about soccer?? He is the same guy who at one point said he didn't care about even having soccer on his show because in his opinion it is an extremely boring sport. OH BUT WAIT the Americans just beat Portugal, so now it's ok. The guy is and always will be an idiot, that is my opion of him.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE GREASY HAMBURGERS

I can’t believe you three are that gullible! Everything Rome said today was with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek, and dripping with sarcasm. It is very well knows that the guy hates soccer. He once said that he’d let his son play girl’s field hockey before soccer. He was obviously making fun of all the soccer-loving nations out there- like Portugal- who regard soccer as a second religion. Christ…you could hear him desperately trying to hold back from laughing out of his chair! He was basically trying to act as if the game WAS the most important event in America (it isn’t), while sticking to all the real Football nations that a non-soccer country just beat a world power.

I may not agree with anything he ever says on soccer, but I also find myself laughing every time he offers a “Soccer Take”. I was laughing hard today, too. TOO FUNNY!

Dude,

This is not something that he said recently, It is from one of his rants from about a year ago that happened to stick in my mind.

You're totally missing the point- he didn't mean a thing he said today! He hates the game, so this is just his way of making fun of those who actually like the game: by acting as they do when their team wins! It is well known that that guy hates soccer and everything about it.

If you were listening carefully, at one point he said, "There's nothing I cherish more than sitting down for 60 minutes to watch a good soccer game!"

I'm taking it that you didn't listen today, but those other two guys bit!:D

Yeah, if you're gonna pass judgment on the guy, you should really listen to his show on a regular basis and see that his whole soccer take is, ironically, a big piss-take. Despite what you're all saying, you're all missing the point.

Rome's entire premise is based on running jokes. From the clones to slik-braaaaaa to Rich in Jeffmond to the Smack-Off to "War KC Tour Stop" - you have to kinda be in the loop to get what the hell he's on about.

He doesn't really care about soccer, doesn't care that the US won, he's just making light that its such a big global sporting event and he absolutely hates it. He finds it amusing that there's so much attention and glamour given to countries who perform strongly at the WC - thus the hilarious "6/5" take. Most of his annoyance with soccer comes from the infamous "dick-biting" incident with Gallardo in Spain earlier this year.

It's kind of annoying given the fact I'm a big soccer fan and he thinks soccer is a sport for pansies, but, he's funny as fcuk and I can respect him for, if nothing else, having an opinion and not being afraid to voice it. Espeicially during WC fever, when every half-witted soccer guy becomes a hardcore know-it-all for the months of June and July. At least Romey is honest.

War TTP,
-Sensei.

I'm surprised they even mention the World Cup on that station. If you check their bios, no one likes it, no one watches it, and no one understands it.

At least NW's Dr. Art Hister is a Man U fan. Not that their sports reporters are any better . . .

Sensei is spot on.

However I don't think that Romie hates soccer as much as he claims. A few months back he was giving his take on what Ray Carruth had lost in monetary terms by having his pregnant girlfreind whacked. He wanted to know how much inmates made per hour. A guy phoned in who had been interviewed by Jim before with respect to college football games that he had thrown for betting syndicates. He had been a kicker and also played for the uni's soccer team and had spent time in jail for his crimes.

Jim thanked the guy for his input and then asked him something to the effect of " You do understand that we're just kidding with the soccer takes don't you?" The guy said that he did understand even if some people didn't "get it". Jimmy said, "I knew you "got it", there's no reason for soccer fan to take it personally, it's just that soccer invariably provides us with so much material".

Anyone who thinks he was being serious today though would be sounding a lot like the guy who phoned in when Jim was talking about how it's every father's dream that his daughter gets into porn some day.

the caller replied, "What??....Jim??... Are you serious???,"

Jim: "Serious as a heart attack."

Caller:"What's goin' on???!!!"

Can't stand the guy

Why...does...Jim Rome....pause...so much... when....he talks?
I have trouble listening to him.
He tends to repeat the same thing over and over again.
He has some good comments..but, his delivery bites.
Anyways, can't expect a commentator from the Excited States of America to understand the most played sport in the world.
Not hockey..Not Baseball...Not american Football..but soccer.

Fine officiating

Excellent call on that Senegal red card. Of course he was standing right there, but he did very well to draw the red without hesitation. Clearly the most dangerous tackle I've seen in long, long time -- a potential bone-breaker.

Mistaken identity. I guess I meant Zaurrini.

Anyhow, I will say one thing about Rome: annoying, yes, but the best interviewer in sports, bar none. This guy gets people to open up and say things nobody else would be able to do.

Ever hear the "Slump Buster" interview?:D

Anyhow, back to soccer...
