Ok, Sir M was not going to wade into this amateur hour. But after conferring with the erudite Moneyman, we have decided to offer a little assistance to you day trader people as to how to deal with a bear market. So, here are a few tips:

- Never try to catch a falling knife.

-Don't fight the Fed.

-The trend is your friend.

- Never sell when there is blood on the streets.

And, finally, a little historical riddle for you, as these things do tend to cycle, as this happened this time of year in 2001 ...

Question: what is Windows 2000?

Answer...what you jump out of when you bought Yahoo at $200 a share.

Sir M.

So true Regs. It's the busiest time of the year for me but I did what they said could not be done...

Jr Field Hockey, Sr Field Hockey, Jr Soccer, Sr Soccer, Jr Badminton, Sr Badminton, Bantam Rugby, Bantam Volleyball, Juvenile Volleyball, Jr Volleyball, Sr Volleyball, Crosscountry, and Swimming schedules all completed (in full) and online for our 17 member schools all before September 15.

12 league meetings in 7 days...updated league policies, meeting minutes, and coaches' contact information all sent to coaches and athletic directors via email.

In between, I've had to deal with accusations of basketball coaches practicing out of season and recruiting---in September!

Now, I will have more time to read about what grass fields suck the most, as well as keeping up-to-date with Sir M's Power Rankings.

By the way, I know that CTV is updating their website and want to have a section dedicated to the best local amateur coverage. I think a Sir M Weekly Power Rankings would fit in very nicely with what they are trying to do at CTV! Sir M...you have the gift...get on it!

As for the market, I have taken a complete shite kicking. Only my Tim Hortons has weathered the storm nicely and I anticipate another jump after earnings are announced in (I believe) early October. I am tempted to purchase more NVidia and more RIO, but as Sir M noted...never catch a falling knife. Long term, I think they are very good buys, but as some people noted, Nortel looked like a steal at $50 dollars until it plummetted to $1.

As for the update...

By the way, it would be a great time for anyone to join the competition considering many stocks are at their yearly lows!

Regs, I thought you and some of the mods would have jumped on board by now!

By the way...how the fcku do people who preach in favour of "free enterprise" and against ANY government intervention (i.e. socialism) look at themselves in the mirror when the government has to run to the aid of investment companies like AIG and bail them out by loaning them $75 billion?

Dude? Your thoughts?:D

If any of you guys are interested in Canadian small caps, there is a good site with a chat room that is open when the market is open and again in the evening - they post the hours. The chat room is for discussing what's happening in the market. It is free to sign up but they don't have or allow pumping stocks! You can mention a stock you like but you must back it up or they will shite all over you. The tracker updates for news with a bell when the market is open and the news releases from companies are on their forums.

Small caps are not for the faint of heart. These guys trade TSX Venture which is the former Vancouver Stock Exchange.

Quiet there now but when the market's rocking the usual crew are on their and I can tell you that these guys are astute and some make some good money (did). Some have very good contacts in companies and seem to know when good news is coming as they know who has loose lips. It is Small Caps dot ca if you want to check it out. I don't get there as much now but I have got some nice wins off their due diligence.

The money that has left the market seems to have disappeared and is not turning up anywhere it seems. Some good buys in steel and coal if you have the nerve or the cash.

No doubt, that's part of the problem, look at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. They were basically prodded to give riskier and riskier loans out because they government had their back if anything went awry, which of course it did. Talk about moral hazard or what.

On what? I still favor a free enterprise, and still am 100% against far left socialist governments. As a general rule, the government should not be involved in private business. In this case, well…it’s about not only feeding the machine, but about keeping the machine from slowing to a full stop.

The fact is I take care of myself, my family, and my business with as little reliance on the government for anything. Everything we sell we do so in a competitive environment, everything we borrow costs us interest. Our business is structured that way, and we market ourselves to other like-minded companies. That being said, we expanded our business twice now in the last 18 months with loans from BDC, because the conservative big banks and credit unions don’t like doing business w/ cowboys like me (they want two solid years of financials, post expansion…a chicken and egg scenario). Was it easy? Hell no. Our business plans needed to be tight, realistic, and polished. We had to sell ourselves, and our vision. We needed to personally guarantee everything, and on expansion 2, we needed to provide audited financials to prove business plan #1 expansion was on track as laid out. Working w/ them is a lot of effort.

But, I’ll admit- we would not have been able to do either of these expansions w/ out BDC in tow. I wasn’t going to borrow a dime from family or friends, and unlike RF, I don’t have a money tree in my backyard.

Bottom line: there is no free lunch in a free enterprise world, even one w/ socialist elements. My loan w/ BDC is at a premium to what the big banks and credit unions offer their clients. The BDC- although established and in place as a government initiative to drive small business- is profitable. This $75B bail-out comes at not only a massive cost to the US Feds, but at a massive equity cost to the shareholders. The Feds may have done this out of a necessity to keep the machine rolling, but they are taking their piece of the pie to be sure.

Yes, take your time please since that will give us more time for the market to rebound. ;)

One rule--you cannot pick any stocks we chose since you are getting them 10-25% cheaper than what we paid for them!

A better day today. I think at one time, Tim Horton's was up over 10% and then people started taking their profits.

I was going to wait until after tomorrow's close, but couldn't stand another day with JBN with the least ugly portfolio. I'd use one of those dancing bananas if I wasn't still in the red.

Nice of you to get Google for about $60 per share less than I paid!

And a nice headstart with Oracle...up $1.25 in afterhours after posting their earnings!

PS You've been hooked up.
