I agree to a point, but my comparison has been to scale a teacher w/ an engineer. Lawyers, Doctors, different realm, both for the degree of difficulty one goes through to become one, then the high risk factor of the professions. But I do think you undervalue not only the job a teacher has, but also the path to get there; that's your opinion. Perhaps I place a higher value on them because of my concern for my kids quality of education. Six figures? Perhaps only the best and most experienced. But, they are certainly not "white collar" laborers.

Yes I understand opportunity costs; I'm in business for myself, and this thread has cost me the opportunity to make some money today.

Now fcuk off, I'm busy. ;)

actually I'm like most people. Teachers, police, firemen are all valuable to society. You only bitch about them when you are adversely affected by them. At the end, salaries are determined by supply and demand by there vocation. And the choices are made when people go to school for their given profession. On this topic, teachers went into their vocation knowing they will not be rich, but will have a comfortable lifestyle. Nothing wrong with that. But asking for anything like 10 to 15% raise is living in a world of fantasy. Rather see 1% raise, but hire more teachers. This way, maybe class room sizes will drop.

lucky I have 10 workers making me money. I'm going to get myself a latte. :wa:

Sorry to sound calice, but if I'm working on top of a building I wouldn't need someone to tell me to wear a safety harness.
before i put my other foot in yours, let me drop some science on your arse....... it turns out that harnesses were not suplied at this site, along with a number of the other ones in question. also when you are one month into a job its very hard for a 20yr old kid to second guess his boss. especially on a contruction site where he would be called the infamous B word that has followed you around your entire life. very calice fcuker!!!
Perhaps your 2nd grade teacher required further teaching support in your classroom to help you learn how to spell. Some students have learning disabilities, you know.
i'll give you that one. first funny thing you've ever said on here. plus you're sticking up for your fellow fcuk ups. solidarity brother.
And believe it or not -- and I'm not a medical doctor -- not all injuries or ailments are diagnosed at the drop of a hat. Sometimes they need further study, tests, specialist opinions, etc. Perhaps your foot is like this. But if you asked me, I'd say you could cure yourself if you just pull it out of your ass.
at the drop of a hat...WTF  . if i dropped a hat 2 weeks ago, don't you think it would've landed by now. are you a proffesional in the art of hat dropping? the trouble is they apparently had the radioligist look at it(x-ray specialist), further study should be accomplishable in two weeks plus, and tests.....hmmm.....what the fcuk do you think they did prior to the x-rays(also a test)?????? why don't you go and take the red out of someones eyes or jerk off in your dark room rather than fcuking with me!!!

Ooops. I meant immediately. "At the drop of a hat" -- stupid me. What was I thinking?

And don't worry, I really don't want to fcuk with you. My wife would kill me.

Dude et al.,

I've got just one quick observation to add. It seems to me that each of your arguments is based in economics -- business this, effeciency that, and so on. Fair enough for most things, but I think in the education sector, much like safety (police & fire) and health (nursing), the government must renumerate those "employees" (for the lack of a better word) on a value-to-society scale rather than a free-market society.

Perhaps you meant this already. And besides, I disagree with this whole strike-for-pay portion of this situation anyway.

Keeper,

I did. Mainly stating that I felt if we could completely reform the system, we could bring more favorable economies of scale to it. But, in the end, Peter needs to steal from Paul as far as supporting our educational system. Besides, Hos will always find a way to support any union, not matter how backwards. He's a trouble maker who needs a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Bad Hos.

The word is spelled callous Teach.

Dude, you are a muppet of the highest order. Let's just get rid of all the unions and then give everyone a fair wage. How exactly are you going to get that to work? The teachers created a union in order to bargain collectively. No union means no bargaining power. It's that simple. The Campbell government is trying to bust the Teachers Union just as it trying to bust the Nurses Union.

Wildcat or die.

So the Labour Minister tells the media that the teachers are setting a bad example for the kids by staging an illegal walk-out. Come on man!
I got a gook laugh out of this one this morning as well. Can anyone else see the irony?

The government tells the public that the teachers are setting a bad example for our kids by breaking the law. A law mind you, that was conveniently designed a day previously, by the government, for the purpose of bullying teachers into another imposed contract. I ask this? What sort of example is the government setting for our young people by abusing legislative power like this?

This was what put me over the top as well. Think how much time, and how much debate goes into creating legislation, and then the government rubber stamps something and says "You will obey this or you run the risk of going to jail!" A complete abuse of authority.

Tomorrow will be interesting for teachers. I hope to see none of my colleagues put themselves infront of everyone they work with in order to get a days pay. It could turn ugly. For me it has nothing to do with money. In fact a teacher at a meeting we held was talked down when they brought the topic up. This is about principle. Teachers have had their rights stripped. World courts have upheld teachers claims to allow for collective bargaining of issues like class size and the Liberals have ignored them. Ironic is that the Liberals think the US should listen to world courts on softwood but ignore them when it goes agianst their agenda. This walk out is not just about teachers. This is every working person in this province that has been given the shaft saying to the LIberals you are not a dictatorship and you can not take away our democratic rights. I guarantee that teachers will not be the only group involved in this, particularly if it goes more than a couple of days. Labour groups will be lining up, because they all have been screwed over at some point, to put the government in their place. It may be a law but it is not justice. Having your political puppets vote on a bill to break labour groups does not make you right. I believe education is essential but it not an essential service. GOrdo proved this by pulling his kids out of school for two weeks each year to go to Hawaii so he oculd have Martini parties. His kids survived somehow. Anyone who belives teachers are doing something wrong because they are breaking a law created by this government should cease to offer an opinion or use the English language. You are discrediting everyone who taught you how to use it and embarrassing yourself.

Willis,

Unfortunately, the teacher who brought this up has done ****ing NOTHING for the school, outside of his classroom. He had NO right to say what he did and the colleague you were referring to(who also ironically does nothing for the school past 3:00) was merely letting everyone know just how much of our salary we are going to lose every day the strike goes on. I'm guessing most of the teachers would not be happy with just having smaller classes????? Yes, the government has basically told us to bend over AGAIN, and this is wrong BUT there are lot of people who voted NO because they didn't want it to get to the stage which it has this quickly. I will not be picketing because it is my choice. I will support my colleagues by not crossing the picket line. It would also be interesting to see how many teachers would show up on picket line duty if they didn't get their $50. I wish all my colleagues good luck on the picket lines and hope it doesn't rain too hard over the next little while. BTW, how the hell did you end up with Sparkola as your right hand man? ;) :D

Captain...one thing I will never support is "work to rule." I'm walking out for the reasons that Willis referred to.

The BCTF does NOT have a right to request that all extra curricular activities be stopped UNTIL the BCTF starts to play a role in creating jobs or protecting jobs for people who volunteer after 3pm.

But when the people who do nothing ask me to stop doing things that I volunteer for, solely so that I can help their bargaining position, well...that's when I tell them to go stuff it.

Totally agree, 9-1-1. We had this happen on our staff on Tuesday apparently. The teachers present at the meeting(ironically I was at a game with our high school boys team) voted to go 'work to rule' as a school. Of course, this can't fly but the person who originally brought it up was the golf 'coach'. In other words, the guy who gets free golf every April/May started this motion........Imagine that, it's not golf season.........

I won't be giving up any coaching when the 'strike' ends...........

You're so young.

Long story short: the real world is tough, especially the business world, and if you can't perform, you're encouraged to find another line of work. Teachers should demand to be compensated fairly- comparable to other professionals in society- and should also be held to the highest levels of standards.

the real world...it's funny how some dismiss the daily interaction of hundreds of students and teachers as the real world... it is their everyday real world...where all your kids hang out ..where we all forged our identities. This "marketplace " of youth is not about widgets....It's about creating a climate of support and acceptance and value and pride that exists outside of the utilitarian model.
I'm not sure what you think needs to be done to shape teachers up and make them feel thankful for work but the majority of teachers I work with are very dedicated and put in more time than they are paid to do. Holding them "more" accountable or whatever it is you suggest is not what inspires them to put in that extra bit.
I'm mixed on the job action, but I 'm glad that people (whoever they are) can stand and fight and not "duck and cover" because Mike DeJong says its Illegal.
So the gov't ripping up a negotiated contract when they felt like it is legal?

Aves: first, it seems you chose to read one post, in one thread. Read ALL my posts on this topic before making the correlation you do, and getting your back up. If you did, in this thread and others, you'd see that I am overwhelmingly on the side of the teachers, however, I strongly disagree with their union's tactics, and feel that the union does more to hurt the teachers than help them in this province. Second, in the particular section you quoted, I was responding to Walls, who stated: "i can't wait until its your/or someone you loves job that gets pulled out from under their feet and is given to someone in indonesia for $2 a day."

Walls made an assumption that turned out to be 100% false; before being a business owner, I was working for others, and yes, I was canned from my first real job out of school. My wife was laid off shortly after 911, because her industry was tied to tourism (an economy that virtually disappeared for a good year). Not bitching about it, just pointing out a fact. No protection in the business world. If you perform badly, or the economy goes into the shitter, you are let go. No, kids aren't widgets, and thank God for the many good teachers that do get this. But its the ones that don't get it that I feel should be released for lack of performance. Just like, well, in the real world.

Perhaps, Aves, you could go back and read this whole thread, then go ahead and take issue with some relevant points I made.

Jinky: what is a Muppet? A puppet, essentially, right? Isn't a puppet a figurine controlled externally by a higher power? What is your average "solidarity forever" union guy? Alas, we never knew each other, anyhow. You say "potato", I say "potato" (that makes sense verbally). Hugs n' kisses, I still love you.

I would like to know if teachers are willing to make up the missed school day(s) after cooler heads prevail and work resumes. Are extra school day(s) going to be added ?
Imo, the teachers gave a right to agrue their position for a pay hike, but using the kids as pawns is a total fcuking disgrace and unethical. At the same time their union leaders and this idiotic government who is only in power again cause of continued low interest rates and all the economic benefits associated with this can go fcuk themselves too.
I hope the teachers wake up and abandon their union. As professionals and well educated people they should know better.
Political and union management careers seem to be the focus of this fiasco, once again wake up teachers and do the right thing!

I couldn't agree more. This union is EXTREMELY incompetent. Unfortunately, it is forced upon us for now......
