Flyers acquire rights to center Mike Comrie

PHILADELPHIA (philadelphiaflyers.com) -- The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired the rights to restricted free agent center Mike Comrie from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for defenseman Jeff Woywitka, a first round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and a third round pick in 2005 NHL Entry Draft, according to General Manager Bob Clarke.

"We believe that this really strengthens our club down the middle," said Clarke in making the announcement. "It gives us a very creative and quick center man and these types of players make the players around them better. Mike is unsigned. He is a free agent at this time whose rights we now own. We're going to work hard to get him signed and get him into our lineup."
Comrie, 23, has yet to play this season. In 69 games for the Oilers during the 2002-03 season, the 5'9", 185-pound center recorded 20 goals and 31 assists for 51 points and 90 penalty minutes. In 192 career NHL games over three seasons with Edmonton (2000-01 through 2002-03), Comrie has registered 61 goals and 72 assists for 133 points and 149 penalty minutes. He set career highs for goals in a season (33), points in a season (60) and games played in a season (82) during the 2001-02 season.

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Comrie was originally drafted from the University of Michigan by the Oilers in the third round (91st overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Woywitka, 20, had recorded six assists and 51 penalty minutes in 29 games for the Flyers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, this season. He was originally drafted from the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League by the Flyers in the first round (27th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Good Trade for both teams. Kevin Lowe was in a pretty tough situation, and he made a pretty fair trade under the circumstances. He makes Philly very deep at the centre position with Roenick, Primeau and Handzus already in the picture. Comrie is a feisty little guy but at 5'9'' he might be a little small for the bang em up style of the Eastern Conference.

Edmonton get a good young defenceman in return with alot of potenital and to get a first rounder is always good. Hopefully the Oilers will get back on track and win some games.

I heard Captain Shamrocks favorite player Kieth Primeau is the odd man out in Philly. He only has 11 points this year and with a big contract he might be on his way out. Some reports have him being traded very soon.

Hmmm, news to me. Anyway, it just adds depth to the top team in the league right now. Speed is always useful, even in the 'tougher' Eastern conference. I still think Clarke should consider spending money on a top goalie, if he has the opportunity..........

Pay Day

Did the Oilers still ask for the 2 million dollars that they wanted Comrie to pay in order to make the Oiler/ Duck deal final.
Edmonton GM Lowe wanted Comrie to pay the 2 million dollars because he asked for the trade and the 2 million is what is was going to take to sign the 2 draft picks that Edmonton would have got in the trade.
Funny how Lowe said it was nothing personal against Mike, just hockey, but this is the first time a player has been asked to put into a deal.

When is the first Oiler/Flyers game, that will be a good one to watch.

HOS, No money was involved in the Mike Comrie trade. I think Kevin Lowe was being kind of stupid asking Comrie to pay his way out of Edmonton. I think he was just upset that they were forced to dump a few million last year after he achieved his bonuses.

I wonder now since Comrie is out of Edmonton the truth about the whole situation will come forward?

A STEAL!

No offense Apprentice, but that deal was a fcuking steal for the flyers.
How high of a draft choice will that be in 2004.
This will probably be a 30th draft choice in a rather weak draft year.
Comrie is already scary enough, but now playing on a line where he is not being checked by the other teams top checkers.Wow.
Sorry but this deal is a landslide.

None taken. I personally think Comrie is not that great of a player. In Edmonton he was given alot of ice time and they didnt really have much besides Ryan Smyth and Anson Carter. He was on the majority of the power play minutes and those two combined will obviously lead to a good amount of points.

He had a solid 51 points in Edmonton last year:rolleyes: Wow is right.

A first round draft pick is a first round draft pick no matter how you look at it. Any kid going in the first two rounds to me, must have the potential to be a good hockey player. Sure not all top picks become anything but you never know. They also get a second round pick the year after.

Bottom Line: Lowe needed to move Comrie because he was becoming a distraction to the team, just look at their record. Not to many teams were interested in Comrie,a 5'9'' center is not on to many G.M.'S christmas lists. Lowe got a good return for an unproven player. Good Trade .

This deal might have to be judged by how much Comrie signs for. Or, What if he decides he doesn't want to play in Philadelphia and doesn't sign with them which could happen?

Clearly once he signs the Flyers bolster their already formidable front lines with another talented player. To add a good player and not have to give up anything off your current roster is a no brainer. Hopefully Mr. Burke takes a few notes unless of course he wants to throw in Sopel.

Once the Flyers sign Comrie they should be able to play with the big boys and not settle for overtime losses against powerhouse teams like the Flames.

Yes, it was an OT loss to Calgary but it is another point. Once again, the Mighty Flyers(I should probably stop using that adjective. Look what has happened to HOS and Khalsa) outplayed and outshot their opposition.

Captain, saw highlights of last few games for the Flyers onthe tv last night. They may still need a goaltender. You can't let teams score on you from farther away than HOS has let in. Hackett also seems to be giving up too many juicy rebounds. Maybe that will fix itslef but who knows

just in time for the holiday season...

Monday, December 22, 2003 - Associated Press.

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Philadelphia Flyers enforcer Donald Brashear has been charged with drunken driving.

The forward is scheduled to appear in Waterford Township municipal court Jan. 8 to face charges of driving under the influence, careless driving and refusing to take a Breathalyzer test.

Waterford Police Chief John Bekisz told The Courier Post of Cherry Hill (N.J.) that police stopped Brashear around 3 a.m. Friday after seeing him pull his 2002 Ford pickup out of a shopping center parking lot and begin swerving.

Brashear, 31, left the municipal jail in the company of an unidentified woman about two hours after his arrest, police said.

First-time DUI offenders in New Jersey face up to 30 days in jail, a one-year driver's license suspension, 12 hours of alcohol counseling and $750 in fines.

Brashear, who joined the Flyers in 2001, has three goals and three assists in 25 games this season, and leads the team with 69 penalty minutes.

A telephone listing in Brashear's name was unpublished, and he could not be reached for comment by The Associated Press. Flyers spokesman Zack Hill declined to comment.

In 1997, as a member of the Vancouver Canucks, Brashear was charged with aggravated assault following an altercation outside a bar. Brashear agreed to enter a six-month intervention program, and the charges were dropped.

In 2000, he was sentenced to six months of probation after an altercation with a worker at his girlfriend's gym.

They might want to ask him what the hell was he doing at the mall at 3 am.

You've never been at a mall at 3:00 am ? Come on, you're from Surrey. That is where most of your 'good times' are spent after your nights at Kelly O'Bryans.

Anyway, the mighty Flyers have been going through a bit of a rough spell. They do it once a year, like most teams in the league, and will bounce back nicely. Only a couple of wins it the last 10 games BUT they are still getting points for regulation ties. With the stinking Leafs going on a hot streak, the Flyers have dropped out of the number 1 position in the East but NJ has been sucking too.....

Another OT loss tonight for the boys in Colorado but a point in a tough building. We travel to Dallas and St. Louis for back-to-back games starting on Monday. Two very tough games against hot teams. I predict a win and a tie in the games......

How did the Canucks do tonight?

That is an understatement if the score in tonight's game holds up. 2-Bagel for the Pens going into the third. Nothing like losing to an AHL team.
