You do not get to know unless you are willing to pay a couple hundred dollars to BC Ferries to join the huge throng of fans.

Congratulations to Surrey United!! Repeat provincial championships are very rare, well done.

The legend of Rob Reed continues.......how many provincial championships is that, 5?!?! 3 as a player, 2 as a coach?!?! BC Soccer should give him the Spada award NOW!!

Surrey edges 10-man West Van to retain Province Cup soccer title

Mario Annicchiarico / Times Colonist
May 11, 2013

West Van FC had its collective life sucked out of it twice in the men’s A soccer championship final of the 2013 B.C. Province Cup on Saturday night at Westhills Stadium in Langford.

Just three minutes in, defender Drew Gelley was given a red card and Colin Streckmann delivered from the penalty spot for the Surrey United Firefighters, which defended its provincial title with a 1-0 win.

Streckmann made no mistake, going low and hard to West Van keeper Garth Lagasse’s right, for the early advantage.

Down to 10 men from that point on, West Van — despite being the more aggressive side — could not deliver the tying goal in the highlight matchup of the eight-game day.

With Surrey United sitting back, West Van’s tying goal appeared to finally materialize, but a penalty kick was squandered in the 54th minute as Paul Dailly was stopped by Surrey keeper Andrew Fink after Joseph Martin brought down Justin Wallace in the box.

“It was a big advantage to be up a man early, although it was clearly a red card,” said Surrey head coach Rob Reed. “To their credit, West Van did not give up. They are not made to quit. I know that team very well and it was an incredible performance, really.”

The save by Fink salvaged the win and sucked whatever life was left in West Van.

“It was a huge save, colossal,” said a relieved Reed. “It doesn’t come any bigger.”

Wallace also drove a shot just over the bar in the 77th minute for West Van, which had defeated Cowichan FC 3-1 in the semifinals last Sunday in Duncan.

“Even with the loss [of Gelley to the red card], I thought it was our game,” said West Van manager Andy Bramley. “I couldn’t be more proud of them. If that penalty kick went in, maybe it’s different, but it didn’t.”

The men’s game followed Gorge FC’s 2-1 loss to Burnaby Selects in the Women’s B championship game as Kate Sequin’s tally in the 68th minute held up as the winner.

Jennifer Morrison had opened the scoring for Burnaby in the ninth minute before Tegan Lang tied it in the 36th minute for the locals, who pressed late but couldn’t equalize.

“The girls played fabulous. It was just unfortunate,” said Gorge head coach Rick Zaharia. “They went down to 10 players and we just started pressing, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.”

Earlier on, Gorge FC lost 3-0 in the Women’s Classic game to Coastal FC Supra at Goudy Field.

In the women’s A final, Surrey United won its 10th straight title defeating North Shore 1-0.

Other results included: Guildford FC 1 West Van FC 0 in the men’s U-21 final; Richmond All Blacks 5 Sarajevo FC 0 in men’s B; Columbus FC 4 North Delta SC Rangers 0 in men’s Masters; Langley United 3 Central City Breakers United 2 in women’s U-21.

The men’s and women’s A champs advance to nationals in Halifax in October, while Coastal FC Supra and Columbus FC (recently inducted into the Canadian soccer hall of fame) qualify for Westerns in September, which will, oddly, be held in Quebec.

I thought it was a good game. It is a very odd thing to have a red in the first 3 minutes, but it was accepted by West Van - it seemed pretty obvious.
Considering West Van was down to 10, they played very well. They definitely pushed, and maybe Surrey was not expecting that amount of push? Regardless, an entertaining game. Again, Surrey tending was considered the difference by some. Stopping a PK is always nice. Add in a couple other really good saves = Soccer Express MVP of the game.
I thought the soccer played was a good relection of the game within BC. While we would have loved to have a local team in the mix, it was still appreciated by those in attendance. As a local organizing committee, we appreciate all the teams making the venture over, spending their day and/or night on the Island, and spending the extra $ to make it all happen.
We look forward to the Finals next year on the Mainland.

I have only heard stories about this incident........how can you say he ruined a final ?? .................
some peeps have the balls to make that call and others .........
Depends on the stories you heard...I've seen him kick a guy off the pitch for drinking water on a very hot day...makes sence to me running around on the pitch on a hot day and you want water you got some balls...to get respect you have to respect the players aswell and he has no respect for anyone.

Ok, so we've seen the reports of the red early on to WV, but what was it for?... With a Peno being scored I'd have to assume a last man back foul in the box or handball on the goaline?...

Angus was in "clear" about 12 out and got pulled down. By all accounts it was justified. Early, but justified.

I'm glad Russ Hiebert (my MP) is awkward on fitba commentary and more focused on assisting running our country than to learn a better way to say "one to zero"

It's Nil Russ... :D

Congrats again Surrey Yoo and well done on some HoC publicity!:knvb:
