Well with the results today looks as if the div.1a teams are reaping the affects of playing AFC and holding ther own against the premier teams.Unlucky to serbian white eagles, for being one of the weaker teams in div.1a it just shows how weak the premier is especially when it is defending bc champs.hahahahahah fireman unlucky animal just shows u something when u leave a team and talk how good u are playing premier and then loose to the team u just left hahahahaha fcuking idiot.Well done richmond.Well off to the next round i wonder if there will be anymore not upsets(cause the premier league is shite)but good results.

MIGHTY Khalsa 2 - Columbus 1, yes Mighty is back and it is to stay through Cup, win or lose.
For the game, Khalsa went up one off a great goal from Sarinder at 15 min. in, and then took most of the play to the Italian team, they did have one quality chance but Nick the Keeper from the Island came up big in front of the Coach from the Edmonton A-League team that was out here scouting him. Secound half was all Col at first then we contered and scored a great goal from Mori with 30 min. left. The last 30 was tight and Teddy TA did score a cracker from 25 yards out with 15 min. to play, but the guy had his eyes closed on the goal. Columbus pressed the rest of the way and Zenga missed kick a few out of bounds and Mighty Khalsa came away with the win.
On to Peg next weekend, where HOS should get the start vs. his old club, the big question is weather or not Randell will give Leetchy Tactics the OK to play or not. I would love to see Leetchy go head to head vs. his Sensie, but thats just me.
When and Where is the Mighty Khalsa vs. Flying Cnut game?

If any team could afford to lose this weekend, it would have to be Firetown with the amount of league games they have left to play... great result by Richmond though! (even if Ginger's Footy Survivor is a pile of rubbish!!!!! )

Its only shite if you are out :D

As for the game today - the boys done good - after the usual shaky start we settled and Junior smashed one from 20 yards to even things up. Normy did good on JJ whilst Jarvie took care of Pete. Chances at both ends, a penalty appeal for both but in the end RUFC finally won it! Feels good to be on the right end of a score line for once having finished up otherwise on far too many occasions!

Firetoon obviously missed Cookie but what is blatantly shocking is the line up they have after consolidating two squads - management need their heads bashing - probably 5 out of their starting 11 deserved to be there.

Larsson - you really are a muppet, you give it large when really with the squad you have the results are not surprising - as for your attack on animal - there is no doubt that if he could channel himself into constructive critisism he could be the best in the lower mainland.

After Sat. matches, here is how we stand.

ROUND OF 16
Game 16: Sporting Club 'A' vs Sapperton Rovers 'A'
Game 17: Winner of Game 2 vs Richmond United 'A'

Game 18: Pegasus FC 'A' vs Khalsa SC 'A'

Game 19: Winner of Game 6 vs AFC Leopards
Game 20: Winner of Game 8 vs Cliff Avenue United

Game 21: Burnaby Canadians 'A' vs Surrey United 'A'

Game 22: Winner of Game 12 vs Winner of Game 13

Game 23: Metro-Ford Wolves 'A' vs Winner of Game 15

Well it is a great second round, I may be jumping the gun a little a bit, but we are onto the second round so here goes.

Sap over Sport in game 16, the week off is going to hurt them, plus Sap. is Harder than a Rock.

Richmond over Sap. B, in the nest game, Sap. may get by Lobbans but RUFC will be a different story.

Mighty Khalsa over Flying Cnuts, come on, they are old and tired, what else is there to say.

Indo or Club Capt. vs. AFC and Larsson, will be a great game either way, the high priced AFC club may not make it by this round.

Inter vs. Cliff Ave. - Best second round match, with the Mobs Bro's going up against the old team, but there is also Doravio, Edger, Samoan, and Joe Billy. Will love to see the Old School vs. New School in this match, rock on, Old School.

Clan FC. Vs. Westside FC. - Even though neither of these teams have made it through, I am picking this match-up.

Have to go with Burnaby Caps here, they have Slurrey's number, plus, they are the best, put you to sleep team in the league.

Wolves vs. DeepCove (I think) - Again a great match-up, have to go with Wolves here, the Cove has struggeled the last few years, and player selection has alot to do with that.

Good luck to all in The Second Round.

Sapp B. 1-4 Lobbans A.

Sapp with an early, and well deserved, PK to start things off. After that it was a bit of a doddle! Apart from some slightly better than average players all that was left was some good work rate. They ran us in the beginning on a field that was nearly 90yds wide. They soon tired in the second half and we found some rhythm to win comfortably. On to the Idiots in the next round.

Too many individuals dribbling around instead of letting the ball do the work

did i miss the part where you actually picked? as jerry seinfeld would say..."no pick".

I missed that part didn't I, well here goes.

Cliff Ave. over Inter, a big scare for the Black and Blue vs. MF today, but the Orange and Black will win vs. the Inter crew.

Would like to pick Clan over Weakside after the tough year the SFU boys are having, but Westside is so good in Cup, that they should come out on top in a close one.

Lobbans 4 - Sapperton B 1

WAB is right. Our team was shite after opening the scoring with a PK. We gave up a PK goal that changed the game that actually came off the post with 3 unmarked Lobbans ready to finish. That tying goal seemed to change our thinking somewhat and individuals took over the play.

Sapperton were fine to start but played again today without Adam Steffich controlling in centre mid and were definitely not a team with all the new talented guys up from u/21 not really understanding how the game is to be played and that is simple, balls, possession and good ball management not going on run after run where we simply run out of places to go. Normally guys understand our philosophy and these guys don't or won't.

Inspector Blake is right. Central Park is probably the widest field in the VMSL so flank play is the way to go. Not for us today.

Our hardest working guy, striker Chris Todd, worked all night flying the air ambulance and got just a few hours sleep at 9 or so this morning!

CAT guys bitch there is nothing to play for but with one chance to win a cup game in the opening round they play poorly. Not happy with this lot right now as team it definitely is not.

To top it off one of the better new guys, Sean O'Neil loses it late in the game and gets a red for starting an altercation after he got hacked. That about summed up the team attitude for us today.

This is not the Sapperton team I am used to but there is a lot of good talent if they decide to learn how the game is played which is not their way.

First of all I would like to Congratulate RUFC on a well deserved win. The game could have gone either way but RUFC wanted it more and deserved it. Our back line had a very poor outing and theirs played fantastic. IMO Colin Norman should get POTW for his job against JJ with Jarvie a close second. RUFC is the one team I can be happy to see win that game but also the one team I can't stand to see win. Good luck the rest of the way and hopefully we see you in the Provincials.

Sid:

You know that one player or one play never wins or loses a team game.

I didn't see the game but you can always go back in any team game and find other instances where, if other mistakes weren't made, goals would have been scored or prevented.

Or, do I take it that you don't like your friends at your old club?

Reccos, you'll probably have to be a little more specific when referring to sid's ex-mates and former club(S). It's got to be hard for the lad to keep track being as "special" as he is and all.

Details regarding the funeral services will be announced soon. Rest in peace, Alex!

IMPERIAL CUP -- 2004-02-09

Most of the first round games of the Imperial Cup were played this past weekend. One huge upset and several near upsets took place as Division 1 teams showed without a shadow of a doubt that they belong in the competition. The upset took place on Saturday at King George Park in Richmond where Richmond United stunned SportsTown Firemen by defeating them in overtime by a 2-1 score. As one might expect, SportsTown took the early lead on a goal by Peter Bergholz, but Richmond United, instead of folding their tents, fought back tenaciously and drew even on a great 25-metre volley from Mark Wilson, a shot that cleanly beat former teammate Mike Frank. Matt Rota notched the winner in the second overtime period on a fine individual effort. Former SportsTown goalkeeper, Jay Cowan, was outstanding in the net for Richmond United, while defender Colin Norman man-marked SportsTown's feared forward Jason Jordan out of the game. For SportsTown, defender Rob Toth played extremely well. Richmond United now takes on Vancouver Lobbans--4-1 winners over Sapperton Rovers 'B'--in the next round.

Also on Saturday, at Newton Athletic Park, Croatia SC came very close to upsetting Pegasus FC, but eventually lost a heart-breaking 2-1 decision. Despite the fact that Croatia carried most of the play in the first half, it was Pegasus that took the early lead when a pair of veterans, Rob Reed and Randy Celebrini, combined to score a brilliant goal. In fact, Celebrini's cross found an unmarked Reed in the penalty area. Reed's header found the back of the net for the game's opening goal. Croatia came storming back, and aided by the fact that Pegasus' Gavin Frey was ejected from the game, tied things up with Graeme Zucko notching the equalizer. In the second half, Croatia's Joe Maras was also ejected and Pegasus took advantage of the situation by pressing hard for the winner. Late in the match, a well-executed free kick from Whitecap Paul Dailly was headed home by young Adam Costley for the go-ahead goal. Pegasus defender Trevor Short was outstanding, keeping Whitecap Johnny Sulentic off the score sheet. Pegasus' next opponents will be Khalsa SC, 2-1 winners over Columbus. Surinder Janda and Jas Atwal scored for Khalsa, while Brian Jacoboni--on a 25-metre blast--replied for Columbus.

Another unusually tight match took place on Sunday at Hastings Bowl where ICSF Inter struggled more than anyone would have anticipated to eventually defeat the Metro-Ford Wolves 'B' team by a 2-1 overtime score. Inter took the early lead on a goal by Whitecap Steve Kindel on a brilliant set-up from young Vaso Kos. The Wolves fought back hard and were finally rewarded when Markus Reinkens drilled a great shot past Inter's goalkeeper, Dennis Kindel. Early in the first overtime, Steve Kindel got the winner on a well-placed shot from a nearly impossible angle. Defensively, Scott Spracklin was outstanding for ICSF, while Nick Augustine was equally as impressive in the Metro-Ford backline. ICSF now takes on another first division team, Cliff Avenue United, in the next round.

On Saturday, at Hastings Bowl, Metro-Ford Wolves 'A' easily defeated the Vancouver Olympics by a 4-1 score. Three youngsters--Diaz Kambere, Azad Palani, and Donald Kambere--and a veteran--Richard Bodnark--took care of the scoring for Metro-Ford, while Kenroy King tallied a late goal for the Olympics. The Wolves' next opponent will be the Deep Cove Royals or PCOV. That match will be played on Friday evening at William Griffin Park in North Vancouver.

On Sunday, at McNair School in Richmond, Indo FC had its hands full against first division Club Ireland, finally winning a 4-3 overtime decision. Indo FC fought back twice from 2-goal deficits to finally defeat the feisty and energetic Irishmen. Whitecap Oliver Heald once again led the way, this time by scoring all four goals for Indo FC. Young Sonny Uppal and Pammi Birring were also instrumental in the amazing come-back. For Club Ireland, Wim DeGroot, Tomasz Dzierza, and John Lawrence scored the goals, while defender Stu Walters had an outstanding game in a losing cause. Indo FC now takes on the AFC Leopards, 3-1 winners over Sikh Temple.

Yet another very close encounter took place on Sunday at Hastings Bowl as the Premier Division Clan Alumni had its hands full against a very determined Norvan team. The Clan finally prevailed over its first division opponents by a 1-0 score but Norvan had at least as much of the play and certainly more scoring opportunities. Whitecap Tiernan King scored the lone goal of the match for Clan Alumni, whose next opponents will be determined this evening when Wickham FC takes on Westside Rino. On Saturday, the Sapperton Rovers 'A' edged Trollers FC 1-0 on a goal by veteran Shane Mummery. The Rovers now take on the first place Sporting Club, recipients of the only bye in the first round of the draw. In the most one-sided game of the weekend, the Burnaby Canadians destroyed Pegasus FC 'B' by an emphatic 5-0 score with Gino Gaita notching a couple of goals. Kevin Taylor, Jeff Shea, and Bobby Crudo also scored for the Canadians, whose next opponents will be Surrey United--2-1 overtime winners over the Serbian White Eagles.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: RICHMOND UNITED for their brilliant performance in defeating the highly-rated SportsTown Firemen by a 2-1 overtime score in the first round of the Imperial Cup. As a result of the victory, the first division Richmond team advances to the second round of the Cup.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: OLIVER HEALD, of Indo FC, for leading his team to an amazing come-from-behind 4-3 overtime victory over Club Ireland in the first round of the Imperial Cup. Last week, Heald received the same honour for his brilliant ball control and immaculate passing. This week, he wins the award for having scored all 4 goals in his team's comeback victory. For his efforts, Heald wins another prize of a pizza for two, compliments of PAZZO TRATTORIA AND LOUNGE. The prize is available anytime, except for Mondays, up to 2004-02-19. The pizza must be consumed on the premises.
