Three of the four quarter finals go TONIGHT, so these are in just under the wire...

Completely Baseless Predictions
Men’s “A” Provincial Cup
Round of 16: 5/8
Overall: 5/8

Quarter-Finals:

Aldergrove (FVSL) v Vic West (VISL)
By all accounts, FVSL Champions Aldergrove came exactly as advertised in their opening 4-1 win over Bays Utd. Brett Wiens, who notched one of the four goals, and Connor Hildebrant were forces to be reckoned with and it stands to reason that they, along with their teammates, will take some stopping in this competition. As mentioned last week, the draw is relatively kind to Aldergrove. Though every team still playing at this time of year has quality, for the second consecutive week they welcome an Island team to the Valley. Vic West are the lone remaining VISL representative in the A Cup in what has been, overall, an underwhelming performance by the league as a whole in the Provincial competitions this season. The Island League runners up had little trouble seeing off Aldergrove’s FVSL compatriots Abbotsford in a 3-0 cake walk at home last weekend. The Victoria boys now get to be on the traveling end of things and we’ll see how they handle the long trek to Aldergrove Athletic Park. Everyone is in with a chance at this point of the tournament, but Aldergrove will be the favourites in this one. A VMSL test awaits the winner of this one, and don’t we all want to see how Aldergrove measure up?

Coquitlam Metro Ford (VMSL) v Westside FC (VMSL)
One down three to go in the redemption quest for Coquitlam. The Tri-Cities boys once again saw off West Van, this time by a 2-0 score line. Meanwhile, Metro Ford’s nemesis Pegasus was eliminated in the first round, so that’s one of the three teams they lost to this year out of the way. One of the other teams to defeat them during their VMSL Championship repeat await in this one. Westside blitzed Coquitlam 4-1 a month ago in by far Metro Ford’s heaviest defeat of the season. At that time Coquitlam were coming off of a 1-0 loss to Peg in the Imperial Cup final while Westside were desperately chasing down a Provincial Cup berth. Clearly the Vancouver boys had more on the line in that encounter, but, even so, 4-1 is a fairly decisive score line. Safe bet then that Metro Ford will have a bit of a point to prove in this one and, given that they were already favourites, that only adds fuel to the fire. The Westsiders have been on an offensive tear of late scoring three or more goals in six of their last seven outings, including three in the final ten minutes of their opening match to rescue a 4-2 win against Nanaimo. The Vancouver boys will be confident of their ability to find the net in this one, though Coquitlam don’t make a habit of conceding goals. You have to bet on Metro Ford in this one, but Westside have received a decent amount of hype as a potential dark horse for the title. Certainly they will be confident, having seen off Coquitlam once already. Expect the Champions to advance, but an upset isn’t completely out of the question.

Langley Utd. (FVSL) v Rovers Tigers Utd. (VMSL)
Match of the Round here as, speaking of upsets, Langley Utd. pulled off a stunner against VISL Champions Cowichan on the Island last weekend. It was a greasy, hard fought 1-0 win and just the kind of gutsy, all heart performance you would expect out of the FVSL crew. Their reward is a home match, but things aren’t set to get any easier as they welcome VMSL up and comers Rovers Tigers to Willoughby. The Surrey boys will be thrilled not to have to travel to the Island and instead just head across 200th St. into Langley on a Friday night. Rovers took care of fellow VMSL side Croatia in their opener out at Burnaby Lake last weekend and have their eyes on a place in the final. It would be quite the feat if Langely were able to keep former MLS man Nick Soolsma and the rest of the vaunted Tigers offence caged. Chances are another 1-0 isn’t on the cards in this one. This is the kind of local derby that can only happen in Provincials, so it should be a fun one. Despite being only blocks away from each other, these two teams might as well be in different hemispheres, so we will see who emerges with local bragging rights. Langley certainly have no intentions of rolling over for their Surrey neighbours, but the VMSL powerhouses will be confident of a place in the Semi Finals.

Club Inter (VMSL) v Port Moody Rangers (FVSL)
Inter had just enough to see off Provincial Cup holders Pegasus in the Round of 16 courtesy of Liam Miller’s tally in a 1-0 win. “Just enough” might be the two best words to sum up the Italian’s season as they did just enough with a 1-0 win in their final game against Coquitlam to qualify for this competition after being one loss away from ending their campaign early over the final stretch of games on their VMSL schedule. Will they be able to do “just enough” to claw all the way to the final? It seems unlikely, but, as mentioned previously, Inter are all about big games and Provincials certainly fall under that umbrella. This team is only two seasons removed from losing in the Provincial Final to an underdog Estrella de Chile team, so this group is no stranger to this time of the year. The Gunners themselves know the meaning of “just enough” fairly well, being the last team to qualify for the Provincial Cup. They went and stamped out any questions surrounding whether or not they deserved to be here in the previous round, thumping fellow FVSLers Port Moody Rangers 4-0 in a local derby. This game is essentially a wild card, but I’ll lean on the historic VMSL superiority in this one and say that Inter continue to do “just enough” to advance.

Scoreless Inter / PM now postponed. Maybe indeed, but Westside knocking off MF is sending notice.

I actually do think the valley has a shot this year. Langley has a strong team and so do Aldergrove. The bracket is clearly going their way as well. Westside and Inter if they go through are both very beatable. Being a big valley guy I would love it.
