Our president is stuck on reporting same names each week. We all watch the games and can not understand why he spends half of his time cheering thirty five year olds out of shape .
We need more on future and younger presents. More than half of the guys are only sixty percent fit. There is few serious sides that came fit and West Van is one of those. Premier has to inprove on team play and faster flow of the game. If you look, each guy holds on to the ball far to long to make it nice to see.Way tomany turn overs for that level. Cpuld be mutch better. It is nice to see Umbertino Cocca play well his shape is much better this year. And a right midfielder on Croatia SC side. Both guys good pace and good read of the game. Both could help Mitchell if need be. Both under twenty eight years of age.

Don't be surprised to see them as "Team of the Week" or supply "Players of the Week" in the near future, so long as it isn't this week. :D

Well that didn't take very long..........

TEAM OF THE WEEK: DELTA WFC for its excellent performance in defeating the heavily-favoured ICSF Inter by a narrow, but well-earned 2-1 margin. The young ‘prospects’, led by the excellent performances of forwards Navid Maschinchi and Drew Russell, as well as defenders Harry Lakhan and Jack Cubbon, played extremely well throughout the contest against the highly-reputed home team to record their first victory of the season.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Delta WFC’s NAVID MASCHINCHI for his brilliant 2-goal performance in his team’s 2-1 victory over ICSF Inter. Maschinchi’s first goal came on an amazing left-foot drive, while his second occurred as a result of a fine set-up by Phil Davies. For his excellent performance, NAVID MASCHINCHI will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2008-10-16.

WEEK #4—2008-09-30

All six games played this past weekend were highly contested, proving once again the fact that the Premier Division of the VMSL is very balanced and competitive. The 0-0 tie between the top team in the standings—West Van FC—and one of the bottom dwellers—Serbian White Eagles—demonstrates clearly the competitiveness of the Premier Division. Another surprise result was the 1-0 victory of Westside FC over the defending champions, Sporting Club of Vancouver. The third upset took place on Friday evening at Vancouver Technical School where the young Delta WFC edged powerhouse ICSF Inter by a 2-1 margin. The favourites will not like the following comment, but upsets are good for the league!!!

On Friday evening, at Point Grey School in Vancouver, Westside FC bounced back from last weekend’s disastrous 3-0 loss to Croatia SC by defeating the reigning VMSL champions, Sporting Club, by a narrow 1-0 margin. The Westsiders started applying pressure right from the opening kickoff as they carried most of the early play against an uncharacteristically flat and disinterested Sporting side. Despite Westside’s clear advantage in ball control and possession, the scoring chances were kept to a minimum. Jay Kent-Hume had perhaps the best chance to give Westside the lead but missed the net from close range with a wicked, low shot. In the second half, Sporting Club seemed to wake up and nearly took the lead on two separate occasions. First, Mark Gomes rattled a long-range free kick off the goalpost with goalkeeper Rowan Anders well beaten. Then, shortly thereafter, John Blair, after receiving a great pass from Steve Dormer, hit a wicked drive from well outside the penalty area. Once again, however, the woodwork got in the way as Blair’s shot bounced off the crossbar and out of danger. With the visitors continuing to press in search of the winning goal, Westside countered clinically as late substitute Dayne Jackson made coach Jason Small look like a genius when he raced in all alone and beat goalkeeper Brian Brum with a brilliant left-foot shot from outside the area. For Westside, veteran defender James Prescott had a phenomenal game, while goalkeeper Rowan Anders was solid in earning the clean sheet. Attacking midfielder James Brown also played quite well in Westside’s upset victory. For Sporting Club, Mark Gomes and Eddie Rodriguez were rock-solid on the backline, while midfielder Mike Gomes was his usual composed self during the entire, hard-fought match. The upset victory elevates Westside FC to third place—tied with Croatia SC and ICSF Inter—while Sporting Club drops to eighth place in the standings!

Also on Friday evening, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, the league leading West Van FC was held to a scoreless tie by the visiting Serbian White Eagles. A large crowd witnessed a rather lacklustre match between two very skillful, but somewhat uninspired, teams. The two goalkeepers—West Van’s Nick Boyd and the White Eagles’ Ted Hans—were able to make some very important and timely saves to preserve the double shutout. The best scoring chance of the contest occurred in the dying moments of the match when the Eagles’ Dennis Lazarovic flew towards the West Van goal on a partial breakaway, only to be stymied brilliantly by Nick Boyd. The tie does not help either team, although West Van FC remains in first place with an undefeated record of 3-1-0. The White Eagles, on the other hand, are still winless and languish in last place in the standings.

The third Friday evening match was played at Vancouver Technical School between the heavily-favoured ICSF Inter and a very young Delta WFC squad. After a very competitive and well-played 90 minutes of non-stop action, the underdog Delta team came away with a well-deserved 2-1 victory, much to the chagrin of the home team. Inter got off to a flying start and came very close to scoring in the first minute of play when young veteran Andrew Corazza’s header bounced off the post and out of danger. However, it was Delta that took the early lead when Navid Maschinchi left-footed a blistering shot off the post and into the net from close range. Early in the second half, Inter’s newly-signed Sebastian Sobis full-volleyed the ball into the back of Delta’s net for the equalizer. However, the young ‘prospects’ bounced back immediately and reclaimed the lead when Navid Maschinchi converted a brilliant pass from Philippe Davies into the winning goal. Two brilliant late saves by Delta goalkeeper Karm Shergill preserved the margin of victory for the visiting team. Defensively, Delta’s Harry Lakhan and Jack Cubbon were rock-solid, while forwards Drew Russell and Navid Maschinchi drove the Inter defenders to distraction during the entire match with their skill and speed. For ICSF, midfielders Joseph Marrello and Josh Bennett, as well as goalkeeper Erman Ozkan, played extremely well in a losing cause. As a result of the all-important victory, Delta WFC climbs out of last place in the Premier Division standings, while ICSF Inter drops to third place as a result of the upset loss.

The fourth, and last, Friday evening game was held at Minoru Park in Richmond and featured the RCIU Legends and the visiting Norvan Eagles. Both teams were in desperate need of points as they both languished near the bottom of the table prior to the game’s kickoff. After an exciting and hard-fought match, the Eagles were able to claim their first victory of the season by a narrow 2-1 margin despite Richmond’s valiant effort. The home team controlled most of the play for the first three-quarters of the match, eventually took the lead midway through the second half but inexplicably surrendered two goals in the late going to the very aggressive and determined Norvan team. After a scoreless, but well-played, first half RCIU took the lead at the 60th minute mark when Brad Caldwell and Chris Jarvie exchanged a series of intricate passes before Jarvie was able to deposit the ball into the back of the net from close range. At this point, Norvan altered its tactics and started playing long balls down the field in search of the equalizer. Finally, at the 75th minute mark, player-coach Steve Millar crossed one of his patented long balls to Shawn Blakeway who converted it into the tying goal in typical Blakeway fashion. Shortly thereafter, Josh McCaig scored the winning goal for Norvan as he took advantage of a defensive blunder to score from close range. The Legends exerted considerable pressure on the Norvan defence in the last few minutes of the game, but stellar defending on the part of Steve Millar preserved the narrow margin of victory for the visitors.

On Saturday afternoon, at the Charles Best School, the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves hosted the revamped Surrey United team and eventually walked away with a hard-fought 3-1 victory. Despite controlling most of the first half, the Wolves had to settle for a 1-0 lead at the break. The goal was scored brilliantly by Azad Palani as he first-timed a great cross from Andrew Veer into the back of the net from close range. Veer had been originally set up by Omari Aldridge’s clever pass. In the second half, however, the Wolves repeated their strategy from last week as they allowed the young and energetic Firefighters to dictate the tempo of the match. Led by youth call-ups Cam Hundal, Sagar Sammy, and Gagan Josan, the visitors took control of the match and eventually scored the tying goal on a great individual effort by Josan. The Surrey United goal seemed to serve as a wake-up call for the Wolves as they came storming back and scored the winning goal when Omari Aldridge floated a long shot from the touchline towards the Firefighters’ goal. The shot was inadvertently deflected into the Surrey United net by defender Dave Featonby. Late in the match, Justin Hebner was tripped inside the penalty area by Flo Liu and, on the ensuing penalty kick, Adam Day made no mistake in scoring the Wolves’ insurance marker. Metro-Ford’s record thus improves to 3-1, good the second place in the Premier Division standings, while the Firefighters remain near the bottom of the table with a winless record.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon Croatia SC and Columbus-Clan FC met at Hastings Bowl in Vancouver and provided the numerous spectators with a very entertaining and well-played 90 minutes of non-stop action. Unfortunately, the final result—a 0-0 tie—does neither team any favours as they were both looking for the 3 points to remain in contention for the very elusive title. Both teams had several goal-scoring opportunities throughout the match as they took turns attacking and defending. However, some poor finishing and some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Croatia’s Didar Sandhu and Columbus’ young Aaron Young, kept the game scoreless for the entire 90 minutes. In the first half, Croatia’s best chance originated from a wonderful pass from veteran Oliver Heald, a pass that found an unmarked Johnny Pashalidis. Unfortunately for the many Croatia spectators, Pashalidis’ shot went wide of the mark. At the other end of the field, Tino Cucca also came very close to scoring but watched agonizingly as his blistering shot grazed the outside of the post. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first with Rizal Ganief and Brendan Stabeno having the best chances for Columbus, and Johnny Sulentic and Maarten Koorn coming close to scoring for Croatia. At the end, however, the 0-0 tie appeared to be a fair result, albeit a disappointing one for both teams.

The favourites will not like the following comment, but upsets are good for the league!!!

President of the Week - Azzi, free pizza pie.

It is great that the league is competitive, why did it take so long to go from 14 teams (two sides) down to 12. It could only get better with 10 teams, like the old days, 6 points between first and bottom.

Btw, upsets are only good for people not trying to win a TTP Hoodie.

There is no need for this league to go to ten teams. The only thing Mr Azzi has to do is to send thitry seven year olds to over thirty five league. That alone will give ten younger players a place to play in at the better level. An Allstar team should be with thirty and younger. That way one or two guys might make it over seas. Rest he and his board is doing a very good job. Angelo has done a good job with refs. Adding two three more div two young clubs can improve the league in three years. I would like if MR Azzi
would let in a Lynn Valley div three team in, and Mount Seamore side in. There is around hundred and twenty guys that have no place to play in. Group two in div three would do word of good. Just few ideas for him to think about. We coud not get in,no space in div three.

WEEK #5—2008-10-06

Three lop-sided scores featured this past weekend’s activity, while West Van FC managed to remain undefeated by edging the Norvan Eagles by a 1-0 margin in the North Shore derby. Sporting Club—last season’s VMSL Premier Division champions and Provincial Cup finalists—continued to struggle and dropped a close 1-0 decision to Columbus-Clan FC. The Metro-Ford Wolves and Croatia SC remained in contention for the league title by virtue of their decisive 3-0 victories, against Delta WFC and ICSF Inter respectively.

On Friday evening, at Vancouver Technical School, the Serbian White Eagles finally won their first match of the season by defeating the visiting Westside FC by an emphatic 3-0 margin. Led by the outstanding midfield play of Alex Kosanin and Dejan Purisic, the White Eagles dominated proceedings from start to finish and fully deserved the victory. Early in the match, Dejan Purisic converted a long-range free kick into the first goal of the game as he caught goalkeeper Rowan Anders out of position and cleverly sailed the ball over his head. Westside attempted to get back into the game and came reasonably close to tying things up when Cam Kochorek’s fine shot barely missed the net. Shortly thereafter, the White Eagles added the insurance marker as Alex Kosanin headed home a great cross from Sasa Pladsic. Early in the second half, the White Eagles were reduced to 10 men when recently-substituted Vojan Kos denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity as he tripped Michael Sami as he was racing in on net on a clear-cut breakaway. The subsequent Westside free kick was wasted and the White Eagles—led by centre-back Miso Rakita—demonstrated some fine defensive tactics for the remainder of the match. Late in the game, Dejan Purisic added insult to Westside’s injury as he raced in all alone on a clinical counter-attack before depositing the ball into the back of the net for the Serbians’ third goal. Goalkeeper Ted Hans was not hard-pressed in recording the clean sheet, while Westside midfielder Nick Graham worked hard throughout the match, albeit in a losing cause. The victory lifts the White Eagles out of the dreaded last place, while Westside FC remains in the middle of the pack in the Premier Division standings.

Also on Friday evening, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, two struggling teams—Surrey United Firefighters and the RCIU Legends—settled for a 1-1 tie despite the fact that both were desperately in need of all 3 points. With both teams in search of the victory, the match was played at a fast-paced tempo and provided the sparse crowd with a lot of excitement. The Firefighters’ Aaron Keay came the closest to scoring in the first half when he bounced a long-range free kick off the goalpost, with goalkeeper Craig Burnham well beaten. Shortly thereafter, Burnham was ejected from the game for denying Billy Shokar an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Midfielder Geoff Salt replaced Burnham between the pipes and got off to an excellent start by brilliantly saving Keay’s ensuing free kick. In the second half, Surrey United tried desperately to take advantage of the fact that RCIU was reduced to 10 men, but some excellent work on the part of midfielder Jeff Potratz and defender Graeme Poole kept the home team off the score sheet. Midway through the second half, the Legends took the lead when Chris Jarvie took advantage of a lethal counter-attack to slot the ball past young goalkeeper Justin Baarts for the go-ahead goal. The Firefighters fought back tenaciously and were finally rewarded in the last 5 minutes as young Sharnell Chettie equalized on a goal-mouth scramble. Forward Brad Caldwell was outstanding throughout the match for the Legends, while goalkeeper Justin Baarts made a very impressive debut in the Firefighters’ net. As mentioned earlier, the tie does not help either team as they both remain mired at the bottom of the Premier Division table.

The third Friday evening match was played at Byrne Creek School in Burnaby between two of the pre-season favourites for the Premier Division title: last season’s champions Sporting Club of Vancouver and perennial powerhouse Columbus-Clan FC. Columbus eventually came away with a well-earned 1-0 victory against the struggling defending champions after a rather lacklustre 90 minutes of play. Columbus had the best scoring opportunity early in the match as Tino Cucca was tripped by Sporting’s defender Blake Douglas inside the Sporting Club penalty area. On the ensuing penalty kick, Cucca’s rather predictable shot was saved brilliantly by goalkeeper Brian Brum. Despite the fact that Columbus continued to retain most of the ball possession, goalscoring opportunities became a rarity for most of the match. Finally, midway through the second half, Nathan Quan found an unmarked Blair Robertson in the Sporting penalty box with a clever pass. Uncharacteristically, defender Robertson slotted the ball past Brum for Columbus’s lone and winning goal. Late in the match, Sporting Club came close to tying things up when Mark Gomes’ header—on a cross from brother Mike Gomes—was cleared off the goal line by defender Robbie Cairns. Defensively, Robertson, Jonathan Poli, Robbie Cairns, and Tony Gaita played very well for the ‘Italians’ while Mike Gomes was his usual outstanding self in the Sporting Club’s midfield. The victory places Columbus in fourth place in the Premier Division standings, while Sporting Club is now languishing near the bottom of the table.

On Saturday afternoon, at Confederation Park in North Vancouver, the North Shore derby took place with West Van FC prevailing over the Norvan Eagles by a 1-0 margin after a hard-fought 90 minutes of play. Despite missing veteran midfielders Mike Dodd and Paul Dailly, the former Trollers had most of the ball possession and created the better scoring chances. On one of these chances, at the 20th minute mark, newly-signed Desmond Tachie made a brilliant run down the right flank, crossed the ball into the danger area where another new signing—Taku Bradshaw—flicked it onto the path of Jesse Fetterley who belted it past the outstretched fingers of Norvan goalkeeper Drew Smiley. The Eagles tried hard to get back into the game but they were denied any clear-cut goalscoring chances by the West Van defensive core, composed of Trevor Short, Leo Nash, Max Baessato and Geoff Buchanan. At the other end of the pitch, the Norvan defensive quartet—playing-coach Steve Millar, Shawn Klein, Edward Bradford, and Mike Speakman—also played extremely well, albeit in a losing cause. The shutout was earned by goalkeeper Marco Durante, his 3rd in as many appearances for the league-leading West Van squad. It should be noted that West Van FC has yet to concede a goal this season and remains unbeaten with a 4-1-0 record.

On Saturday evening, the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves travelled to the unfriendly confines of Simon Fraser University to take on the rejuvenated Delta WFC. In their last two games, the young Whitecaps ‘prospects’ had managed to hold Columbus-Clan FC to a 3-3 tie and had beaten another powerful team—ICSF Inter—by a 2-1 margin. However, against the very determined and well-organized Wolves, the prospects were unable to repeat their previous successful results and succumbed by a 3-0 margin. Very early in the match, the Wolves took the lead when Azad Palani pounced on a loose ball—after some creative passing on the part of Justin Hebner and Emilio Bottiglieri—and slotted the ball into the back of the net from close range. The talented Delta youngsters fought back tenaciously and applied a great deal of pressure on the Metro-Ford defence with some skillful passing and penetrating runs. However, as luck would have it, the visitors increased their lead midway through the first half when Omari Aldridge scored his third goal of the season as he received a brilliant through ball from Adam Day, outpaced the Delta defenders and calmly slotted the ball into the net. Just before the half-time whistle, Azad Palani added the Wolves’ third goal on a brilliant near-post header from an immaculate cross by Emilio Bottiglieri. In the second half, the Delta young lads continued to exhibit their fine techniques but were unable to penetrate a very strong Metro-Ford defence, led by Scott Butschler and Dave Sambol, thus making life relatively easy for goalkeeper Mathew Bird as he gathered his second clean sheet of the season. As a result of the victory, the Wolves remain in second place in the Premier Division table—with a 4-0-1 record—while Delta’s record drops to 1-1-3.

The lone Sunday game was once again played at Hastings Bowl in Vancouver and featured two of the top teams in the VMSL—Croatia SC and ICSF Inter. Both teams needed all 3 points to remain in contention for the Premier Division title but, in the end, it was the Croatians that walked away with a rather easy 3-0 victory. Croatia SC took control of the match from the very beginning and could easily have scored a couple of goals in the first half had it not been for some poor finishing and some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Inter’s young Erman Ozkan. The best Croatia chance occurred at the 15th minute mark when Gary Anderson was sent flying towards goal by Mirko Maras. Ozkan read the play very well as he came storming out of his goal and beat Anderson to the ball, thus preventing what appeared like a sure goal. A few minutes later, a couple of Croatian veterans—Oliver Heald and Johnny Pashalidis—combined to create yet another goalscoring opportunity. Unfortunately for the home team, Pashalidis, after receiving an impeccable pass from Heald, missed the net with his poorly placed shot. Croatia SC continued to dominate proceedings in the second half, and was finally rewarded at the 55th minute mark when Heald once again set up Pashalidis with a perfectly-executed pass. This time, Pashalidis proceeded to slot the ball into the back of the net after beating an Inter defender with an unbelievably clever move. Encouraged by their boisterous and numerous supporters, the Croatians kept pressing and were rewarded a few minutes later when Maarten Koorn was set up by Johnny Sulentic before firing home a wicked shot from the edge of the penalty area. Despite being reduced to 10 men—due to the expulsion of Josip Maras for a violent conduct infraction—the Croatians kept pressing and got their third goal when Johnny Pashalidis scored his second goal of the match on yet another brilliant pass from Johnny Sulentic. It should be mentioned that the Croatian defence—composed of Mario Jelic, Robin Hart, Mirko Maras, and Ryan Zaharija—played extremely well in keeping the vaunted Inter attack at bay. As a result of the victory, Croatia SC remains in third place in the standings, while ICSF Inter drops to fifth place with a disappointing 2-1-2 record.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: CROATIA SC for its excellent performance in defeating ICSF Inter by a decisive 3-0 margin. The Croatians, led by veteran midfielders Oliver Heald and Johnny Sulentic, controlled the vast majority of the match and eventually walked away with a rather easy victory over the struggling ‘Italians’. Another veteran, Johnny Pashalidis, was also a major contributor to the emphatic victory as he slotted home two brilliant goals and played suberbly in his attacking midfield position.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Serbian White Eagles’ DEJAN PURISIC for his brilliant 2-goal performance in his team’s 3-0 victory over Westside FC. Throughout the match, Purisic demonstrated a superb level of skill and speed, as his drove his opponents to distraction time after time. The two goals were simply icing on the cake!! For his amazing performance, DEJAN PURISIC will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2008-10-23.

WEEK #6—2008-10-13

Only one upset was recorded this past weekend, as the newly-promoted RCIU Legends beat the previously undefeated West Van FC by a narrow 1-0 margin. It should be mentioned that this is the first goal to be scored on West Van this season! As a result of the West Van loss—and Metro-Ford’s 1-0 victory over Croatia—the Wolves have now climbed into first place, 2 points ahead of the former Trollers. On a different note, the VMSL would like to extend our congratulations to the Vancouver Whitecaps for beating the Puerto Rico Islanders in the USL finals. Four former VMSL players—Alfredo Valente, Steve Kindel, Jeff Clarke, and Charles Gbeke—played the entire 90 minutes for the Whitecaps, with Gbeke scoring both goals in the 2-1 victory.

On Friday evening, at Cloverdale Athletic Park, the visiting Delta WFC came back from a 1-0 deficit to score three late goals and thus defeat the Surrey United Firefighters by a 3-1 margin. The Firefighters appeared to take the early lead when veteran Aaron Keay slotted the ball past goalkeeper Karm Shergill, only to have the goal disallowed for an apparent offside infraction. Soon thereafter, however, newly-signed Donald Karmbere used his remarkable speed to race down the right flank before crossing an impeccable pass onto the path of veteran Peter Bergholtz who calmly deposited the ball into the back of the Delta net for the go-ahead goal. The Firefighters came close to adding to their lead near the end of the first half when Delta goalkeeper Karm Shergill made a miraculous save on a close range shot by Peter Berholtz. At the other end of the pitch, young Justin Baarts—the Surrey United goalkeeper—also was forced to make a brilliant save on a shot by Nolan Moore. In the second half, the young Delta lads took advantage of their superior fitness and took over the reins of the match and were eventually rewarded with 3 goals in the last 10 minutes of play. Marcus Johnston and Ian Clark scored in rapid succession—both on excellent set-ups by Nolan Moore—while Philippe Davies added the insurance marker just before the full time whistle with a rocket shot from well outside the penalty area. It should be mentioned that Moore was also involved in the last goal as he beat a couple of Surrey United defenders before cutting the ball back onto Davies’ path. Antonio Rago and William Hyde were rock solid in the Delta WFC defence, while midfielder Phil Davies and forward Nolan Moore were outstanding in their respective positions. As a result of the victory, Delta WFC climbs into the middle of the pack in the Premier Division standings, while the loss leaves Surrey United at the bottom of the table.

Also on Friday evening, at Point Grey High School in Vancouver, the revamped Norvan Eagles edged the host Westside FC by a narrow 1-0 margin. The Eagles came flying out of the starting gate with Blake Burgon and young Nick Cashmere creating all kinds of problems for the Westside defenders with their speed and tenacity. In the early going, Norvan came close to scoring on several occasions but Westside goalkeeper Rowan Anders came up with a few brilliant saves to keep his team in the match. As well, a couple of chances by Shawn Blakeway and Nick Cashmere narrowly missed the target. Midway through the first half, defender Ivan Georgeff rattled a long-range shot off the goalpost for Westside’s only clear-cut scoring chance. In the second half, the Eagles continued to press and were eventually rewarded when, at the 68th minute mark, Nick Cashmere took on a couple of Westside defenders before crossing the ball to the far post where an unmarked Shawn Blakeway had no difficulty in heading the ball into the net for the winning goal. Despite the fact that Westside tried desperately to get back into the match, the Eagles had the best goalscoring opportunities late in the match, mostly on counter-attacks. Shawn Blakeway, Brian Fowler, and Harpreet Khakh all had glorious chances but all missed the net, albeit narrowly. Late in the match, a well-struck free kick by veteran Westside midfielder Keith Moore was brilliantly saved by newly-transferred goalkeeper Drew Smiley who, as a result, recorded his first clean sheet of the season. Once again, player/coach Steve Millar was rock solid on the Norvan backline, while midfielder Harpreet Khakh was a going concern throughout the match. While both teams remain in the middle of the pack, the result allows the Eagles to leap-frog over the Westsiders in the standings.

The third Friday evening match was played at Byrne Creek School in Burnaby between two of the pre-season favourites for the Premier Division title: last season’s champions Sporting Club of Vancouver and perennial powerhouse ICSF Inter. After a well-played 90 minutes, both teams settled for a 1-1 draw, a fair result since both teams took turns attacking and defending. Inter dominated the early part of the game and scored the opening goal at the 10th minute mark when speedy Sheldon Maistry beat two Sporting defenders before setting up Joseph Marrello for the go-ahead goal. It should be mentioned that Maistry had come close to scoring a few minutes earlier but had been denied by goalkeeper Brian Brum. Later in the first half, Sporting Club came out of its shell and started exerting some pressure on the ICSF defence.but young goalkeeper Erman Ozcan was able to maintain the clean sheet until the half time whistle. The second half was more or less a carbon copy of the first, as both teams took turns attacking and creating several excellent goalscoring opportunities. Inter’s Sheldon Maistry, Christian Tropeano, Adam Wallace, and Mike Tempesta had the best chances, but some poor finishing and some great goalkeeping on the part of Brian Brum kept the scoreline at 1-0. At the other end of the pitch, Sheu Fortunato and Ryan Dormer also had some excellent opportunities to level the score but were denied by Ozcan’s brilliant saves. With about 10 minutes left in the match, Sporting’s John Blair unleashed a wicked free kick towards Ozcan’s goal. The shot was inadvertently deflected into the back of the net by Jesse Dhami for the equalizer. The tie does neither team any favours as Inter remains in the middle of the table, while Sporting Club is struggling near the bottom of the standings with an unbelievably poor 1-2-3 record.

On Saturday afternoon, the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves hosted archrivals Croatia SC at Charles Best School and walked away with a hard-earned, and somewhat fortunate, 1-0 victory. After a scoreless and rather uneventful first half, the Croatians took over the reins of the match in the second half, mostly due to the early ejection of Matthew Besuschko for a violent conduct infraction. From that moment onward, Croatia SC dictated the tempo of the match and only some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Mathew Bird prevented the visitors from taking the lead. In particular, Bird made a couple of miraculous saves on a close-range shot by Robin Hart and a great header by Corrado Lenzi. Ironically, very late in the match, Emilio Bottiglieri netted the winning goal for Metro-Ford as he unleashed a world-class shot from well outside the penalty area, a shot that gave former Whitecaps’ goalkeeper Didar Sandhu absolutely no chance. Defensively, Scott Butschler and Brook Scott were rock solid in a winning cause, while midfielder Brian VanSchagen and forward Omari Aldridge played extremely well throughout the contest. Central defenders Mario Jelic and Robin Hart also turned in outstanding performances, albeit in a losing effort. The Wolves now find themselves alone in first place with a 5-0-1 record, while Croatia SC drops to fourth place with a disappointing 3-1-2 record.

Also on Saturday, at MacNeil High School in Richmond, the newly-promoted RCIU Legends upset the visiting West Van FC by a narrow 1-0 margin Led by some spectacular goalkeeping on the part of Matt Clayton, as well as some solid defending by Graeme Poole, the Legends were able to hold off the vaunted West Van attack and eventually take home all 3 points. The first half was dominated entirely by the visitors but their numerous goalscoring opportunities were either squandered with some poor finishing or saved brilliantly by Clayton. In particular, Clayton denied golden scoring chances to Desmond Tachie, Trevor Short, and Austin Lowrie with 3 semi-miraculous saves. Early in the second half, however, Richmond’s Chris Jarvie beat two West Van defenders, raced in all alone and deposited the ball into the back of the net with a brilliant left-foot shot. It should be noted that this is the first goal that West Van FC has conceded this season! A few minutes later, the Legends were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Pat Dickinson was ejected from the match for a serious foul play infraction. At this point, West Van’s attack became even more determined and, once again, Matt Clayton had to come up with some incredible saves. As mentioned earlier, West Van’s first loss of the season drops the former Trollers into second place, 2 points behind the Metro-Ford Wolves. The Legends, on the other hand, are now in the middle of the pack with a respectable 2-1-3 record.

The lone Sunday game was once again played at Hastings Bowl in Vancouver and featured one of the top teams in the VMSL—Columbus-Clan FC—and the newly-promoted Serbian White Eagles. The White Eagles had registered their first victory of the season last week and appeared ready to take on the heavily-favoured ‘Italians’. However, after 90 minutes of one-sided action, Columbus walked away with a very easy 6-1 victory, a victory that keeps the Italian Clan in the running for the Premier Division title. Columbus opened the scoring midway through the first half when veteran Tiernan King beat a couple of flat-footed Serbian defenders before finding the back of the net. Moments later, King became the provider as he sent Rizal Ganief streaking down the left flank with a great pass. Without a moment’s hesitation, Ganief unleashed a brilliant shot into the net, giving goalkeeper Jovan Lucic no chance whatsoever. Early in the second half, King continued to impress as he set up Robbie Cairns for Columbus’ third goal. Shortly thereafter, however, the White Eagles’ Denis Lemezovic was fouled inside the Columbus penalty area by veteran defender Frank Mollica. On the ensuing penalty kick, Dejan Purisic scored his 4th goal of the season as sent Columbus goalkeeper Aaron Young the wrong way with a well-taken shot. Columbus responded in kind immediately thereafter as Tino Cucca set up Rizal Ganief for his second goal of the game with a clever pass. Columbus rounded out the scoring late in the match with two goals scored in rapid succession. First, Steve DeBlasio set up Tiarnan King for his second goal of the game and then, in the dying moments of the match, Rizal Ganief unleashed a terrific long-range shot to score his third goal of the match, and 7th of the season. As a result of the well-earned victory, Columbus-Clan catapults into third place of the Premier Division table, while the White Eagles are now mired in penultimate place, two points ahead of bottom feeders Surrey United Firefighters.
