By the sound of weekly report we have the best league in the world. Yet kicking and running is the mame of this league. Willie knows how to make it sound good.
How com Caps do not call a guy like Reza they will need help next year. Every club is going to step it up against them. Kick the dam ball it takes to long to get down the field. Tatch tatch tatch tatch. Maybe pass. Simple 0 to ten for each player and the weak links will show. Cheers

WEEK #7—2008-10-21

No major upsets took place this past weekend as the favourites were able to defeat the underdogs—in some cases by comfortable margins. The only result that could be considered a minor upset was the 1-1 tie between the Serbian White Eagles and ICSF Inter as the newly-promoted Eagles bounced back from last week’s embarrassing 6-1 defeat at the hands of Columbus-Clan FC to hold the other ‘Italian’ team to a draw. On the other hand, Columbus continued to impress by soundly defeating Norvan by a lop-sided 5-1 margin in a game played Monday evening at Confederation Park in North Vancouver.

On Friday evening, at Byrne Creek School in Burnaby, the Metro-Ford Wolves faced last season’s Premier Division champions—Sporting Club of Vancouver. The Wolves continued their impressive winning streak—and remained in sole possession of first place—by defeating the defending VMSL champions by a lop-sided 4-0 score. Metro-Ford got off to a good start by creating a couple of early chances and scoring the opening goal at about the 8th minute mark as Aaron Arnold ran onto a well-played through ball by Omari Aldridge and proceeded to calmly deposit it into the back of the Sporting net. The goal served as a wake-up call to the rather lethargic Sporting Club who, led by the fine performances of brothers Mike Gomes and Mark Gomes, started to carry the play. However, some excellent defending on the part of Metro-Ford’s Brook Scott, Dave Sambol, Scott Butschler, and Aaron Beattie kept the vaunted Sporting Club attackers at bay. In the second half, Sporting Club continued to press in search of the equalizer but some lethal Metro-Ford counter-attacks put an end to the home team’s hopes of equalizing. First, Azad Palani scored the Wolves’ second goal on a great header from a corner kick by Emilio Bottiglieri. Then, at about the 70th minute mark, Bottiglieri added Metro-Ford’s third goal with a clinical finish. Finally, near the end of the match, second half substitute Reece Miles put the last nail in Sporting Club’s coffin with yet another fine finishing touch. The victory improves the Wolves’ record to 6-0-1, while Sporting Club is now near the bottom of the table with a very unimpressive 1-2-4 record.

Also on Friday evening, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, West Van FC responded extremely well to last week’s upset loss to Richmond Club Ireland by easily defeating the visiting Westside FC by a 4-1 margin. Led by the indefatigable work rate of striker Jesse Fetterley, the former Trollers took control of the game right from the opening whistle and retained their dominance throughout the 90 minutes of play. Very early in the match, after making a superb run down the left flank, defender Max Baessato brilliantly crossed the ball onto the path of Jesse Fetterley who made no mistake in scoring his first of three goals. Fetterley continued to impress with his frantic pace and darting runs as he drove the Westside defenders to distraction for the remainder of the contest. The second West Van goal was almost a carbon copy of the first as right back Taku Bradshaw, after making a few nifty moves, crossed an immaculate ball to Fetterley who proceeded to one-time it into the back of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. In the second half, big Ryan Glanville added the home team’s third goal by driving the ball into the bottom corner of the net after having received a pass from Jesse Fetterley. With 15 minutes to go in the game, Jesse Fetterley received a pass from veteran Paul Dailly, beat several defenders and slotted the ball home for his third goal of the match. Very late in the match, Westside’s Rick Artuso took advantage of some miscommunication in the West Van defence to score his team’s lone goal and thus ruin young Nick Boyd’s attempt to record a clean sheet. It should be mentioned that Westside’s midfielder James Brown played extremely well throughout the match, albeit in a losing cause. As a result of its impressive performance, West Van FC remains in second place in the Premier Division standings, with a 5-1-1 record, while Westside FC is now near the bottom of the table with only 7 points from 7 games.

The third Friday evening game was played at Vancouver Technical School and featured the Serbian White Eagles and ICSF Inter. Once again, the heavily-favoured ‘Italians’ failed to impress and, as a result, were held to a 1-1 tie by the White Eagles. The first half was very evenly played with both teams sharing possession of the ball and creating a few good chances at both ends of the pitch. Inter came close to taking the lead in the early going but the White Eagles’ goalkeeper, Jovan Lucic, pulled off a spectacular save on a great shot by Joseph Marrello. Shortly thereafter, Sheldon Maistry blasted the ball over the crossbar, thus preventing Inter from taking the lead. Late in the first half, the White Eagles took the lead as young goalkeeper Erman Ozcan mishandled a throw in and thus allowed Ogden Miskovic to tap the ball into the net from close range for the go-ahead goal. In the second half, ICSF applied a great deal of pressure in search of the equalizer, but had to wait until very late in the match to achieve its goal. A long-range free kick by Sonny Uppal was inadvertently deflected into the White Eagles’ net by Brian Connaughton, leaving goalkeeper Jovan Lucic stranded out of position. Inter’s forward Sheldon Maistry was a going concern throughout the contest, while Alex Kosanin and Dejan Purisic once again displayed their fine skills in the White Eagles’ midfield. The single point doesn’t help either team’s quest as Inter drops to an unenviable 6th place while the White Eagles are still mired in the relegation zone.

On Saturday, at Simon Fraser University, the young Delta WFC climbed into 5th place in the Premier Division table by defeating the RCIU Legends by a convincing 2-0 margin. Delta dominated the entire first half and took a well-deserved 2-0 lead into the dressing room at the halftime break. Marcus Johnstone opened the scoring midway through the first half when he converted a clever pass from Nolan Moore. Shortly thereafter, Philippe Davies scored on a penalty kick after Richmond’s Spencer Coppin had handled the ball in his penalty area. The subsequent expulsion of Coppin did not help the Legends’ cause as they were unable to generate any really dangerous goalscoring opportunities in their attempt to get back in the game. A very disappointing performance on the part of the visitors, especially after last week’s impressive victory over West Van FC! The young ‘prospects’ on the other hand, appeared to be very organized as they played with composure, skill and tenacity. Special mention should be made of forward Marcus Johnstone who, with his impeccable skills and tireless work rate, was a thorn on the side of the Richmond defenders throughout the match. Philippe Davies also played very well for Delta as he controlled the game from his central midfield position. Delta WFC thus improves its record to 3-1-3, while RCIU slips to 8th place with a 2-1-4 record.

On Sunday, at Hastings Bowl in Vancouver, Croatia SC remained solidly in 4th place in the Premier Division standings by edging the visiting Surrey United Firefighters by a 1-0 margin. The first half was fairly evenly played as both teams took turns attacking and creating scoring chances. The best scoring opportunity for the Croatians came at the 15th minute mark when Johnny Sulentic, after having received a great pass from Johnny Pashalidis, watched agonizingly as newly-signed goalkeeper Paul Shepherd made a phenomenal save. Just before the halftime whistle, the Firemen also had a golden opportunity to score when Donald Kambere flew in on goal on a breakaway only to have goalkeeper Didar Sandhu thwart the opportunity with a brilliant save. In the second half, Croatia controlled most of the action and came close to scoring in the early going when Johnny Pashalidis was once again denied by Paul Shepherd. The Croatians, however, kept pressing and were finally rewarded midway through the second half when Gary Anderson outran a rather flat-footed Surrey United defence before slotting the ball past Shepherd for the game’s lone goal. Both teams came close to scoring near the end of the match but a Pashalidis shot was once again saved by Shepherd, while Aaron Keay missed the net at the other end of the pitch with Sandhu apparently beaten. The victory solidifies Croatia’s hold on fourth place, with a 4-1-2 record, while Surrey United remains all alone in last place with only 3 points from 7 matches.

On Monday evening, at Confederation Park in North Vancouver, Columbus-Clan FC continued to impress by demolishing the host Norvan Eagles by a 5-1 margin. Ironically, it was Norvan that took the early lead as Brian Fowler’s long range, speculative, left foot shot found its way to the back of the net behind a bewildered Aaron Young. The Norvan goal seemed to be the wake-up call Columbus needed as the visitors took over the reins of the match from that moment onward. Shortly thereafter, Tiernan King cleverly played a short free kick to Steve DeBlasio who proceeded to unleash a wicked drive that gave newly-signed goalkeeper Drew Smiley not chance whatsoever. Just before the halftime whistle, Columbus took the well-deserved lead when a clever 3-way passing play involving Tiernan King, Blair Robertson, and Brendan Stabeno ended with King scoring from close range. In the second half, Columbus controlled the play from start to finish and scored three unanswered goals to lay claim to the rather easy victory. First, Steve DeBlasio beat a couple of Norvan defenders before setting up Tiernan King for his second goal of the match. Moments later, Brendan Stabeno headed home a Tiernan King corner kick for Columbus’ fourth goal. King would then finish off his hat trick on a fine individual effort to round out the scoring. The Columbus backline, composed of Tony Gaita, Frank Mollica, Blair Robertson, and especially Jonathan Poli played superbly throughout the match, shutting down Norvan’s attackers time after time. Columbus’ victory solidifies its hold on third place, while the Eagles’ loss leaves them in the middle of the table with a mediocre 2-2-3 record.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: COLUMBUS-CLAN FC for its brilliant performance in defeating the revamped and rejuvenated Norvan Eagles by an emphatic 5-1 margin. Led by the outstanding performances of midfielder Steve DeBlasio, defender Jonathan Poli, and forward Tiernan King, Columbus dictated the pace of the match for virtually the entire 90 minutes of play.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: West Van FC’s striker, JESSE FETTERLEY and Columbus-Clan’s TIERNAN KING for their remarkable performances in leading their teams to victory by very comfortable margins. Both Fetterley and King scored hat tricks for their respective teams. Also, both players contributed much more than their goals as they displayed qualities of tenacity and skill throughout the contests. For their brilliant efforts, FETTERLEY and KING will each receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2008-11-07.

Wiliam change your weekly reports to Europian soccer scores, where each player gets a score fom a coach how he performed. We have change to moder times.
It will invalve coaches with you and it will be more fun to see what they think. To us soccer guys somtime stories do no reflect the game. Maybe we see it from a diferant angle than you do. In my opinion it takes eleven to win a game ,not the two or thee you post about. Defenders must get way more credit and also keepers. I do not care if you post or not it just does not look upto todays game standard. Game is changing we have to do it also. It is tocold to sit on the stairs in the winter. Coaches are good guy and will give you more proper report than you ever think. White lilly. Forget forget not forget forget not. Cheers.

for the love of all things sweet and innocent... SHUT UP! you have written the same crap three times now. we get it... you want ratings out of 10. great. now be a peach and tell us how to implement this. you want each coach to rate his and the other teams players after each game? you've got to be fist fcuking me with a breitling on. maybe this works in the BPL when every guy on the pitch is a household name... but you may not believe that i have no fcuking clue who 90% of the guys i play against are. now go back to smoking that glass dick and post when you have something INTELLIGENT and ORIGINAL to add.

Mr. Base,

I'm not sure coaches in Europe give a rats ass about the 1-10 ratings that Football Writers, Supporters Sites, and Pundits like to use to critique and rate players performances on the pitch.

Why would the coaches here care either?

Just because BBC Sport and Sky sports etc use the player rater doesn't mean it is the Standard by which Managers and Coaches rate their players/review the competition.

But ask and ye shall receive:
This thread player rater:
Mr. Azzi: 10 displayed grace and an amazing grip of the english language, especially with his dropping of the word "indefatigable"
SixFyv: 7.5 Copying and Pasting Method is unequalled, could be a 8.5 out of ten had he used the quote facility, but nonetheless a good shift and got up and down the page well, contributing when needed
Dude:7.5 for good TTP, is always there when needed.
Regs: 4 for questioning Mr. Azzi's excellent hold on the English Language, but one bonus point for seeing the err of his ways, and calling out a wiki dictionary.

Tracking players' distance travelled on the pitch is particularly useful as well, right Mr. Base?

You're rubbish.
