as per dude's post...

Keep your head up dude, we are hearing rumblings of a big project up country where a plant is going to be producing biomass fuels etc from the Pine Beetle wood, also to make pulp etc from that...

very early stages, but one that should be on your radar.

i believe the site was either in Kitimat or Price Rupert.

One wonders if the NDP got so much hate-response to the idea of floating said red herring that they realized it wasn't worth it to rip up signed contracts/agreements to kill the project and that perhaps this was the most viable solution- both economically and sustainably assuming they ever got their donkey arses elected to office

Any money they are going to try and push Biomass projects. Although I agree on many levels that large facilities should consider Biomass as an alternate to gas, it is by no means green, as the NDP and Libs are selling it to be:

My wife's company (flower grower) has been using pine-beetle damaged wood for there boilers for quite a while now - and finds it very cost effective. I think there is a gov't rebate, because the wood is damaged, the wood is cheap, because it is damaged, and it is very efficient, because the new boilers are so efficient.

it is considered green, because it is renewable. should only take 20-40 years to pull down carbon released from burning wood. if carbon capture/reduction methods are used, it is considered net negative carbon over a (say) 30-year period. it is also good for the forestry industry, because it provides a market for the damaged trees, and allows clear-cutting of infested areas, with replanting hopefully being done in a fashion that prevents further infestation.

this year's extra cold and long winter should have slowed the pine beetle's advance, maybe even set it back. we'll have to see.

for the record, i don't believe in man-made climate change or runaway global warming, so to me the entire carbon thing is pointless.

the NDP don't know what they are doing... this is going to be a pathetic election. they need to get rid of carole james and put in someone with a backbone and a good vision... wait, it's the ndp - that'll never happen...

hey Reverend, when they rebuilt the u.n.b.c. in prince george a few years back they used all pine bettle wood. it actually has a nice purple blue haze to the wood. very cost effective, most companies would pay you to take it away. it's nice to see this otherwise good wood is being used for other purposes and not wasted. Good on your wife.

Hey Dood/Rev:

Any word anywhere lately about wood waste conversion to biodiesel fuel? I'm thinking specifically about the bacteria-based process...

On topic: some NDP party platform notes regarding BC Place that I aquired from A Secret Source:

  1. take starter's pistol in right hand.
  2. replace blanks with live ammo.
  3. take careful aim and shoot right foot.
  4. repeat with left foot.
Go Rhinos!

It's more expensive right now to buy wood pellets than Natural grass. If you haven't noticed, the wood industry is dead. In fact, the only real wood business these days is the production of pellets from beetle kill, which isn't free.

The efficiency of the burn has very little to do w/ the raw wood itself. It still needs to be processed into a small pellet, and processed to a specification.

It's a vicious cycle. The production of the pellets themselves creates an bi-product (emission) that requires controls, and power. $$$.

The boilers are only as efficient- cost wise- if the fuel is cheap. There is a huge shortage on chips, hog fuel, and other waste sources, so the pellets are now costing too much. Plus, once you run the boiler, it's nothing but green or carbon neutral. Look at the steps it takes to get there...far from green.

Seriously, we need another word for nuclear power, and we need to start selling that, and using that. That is the answer to the dilemma.

As for the NDP...Trece, can't agree more.

Major typo...should have been "anything".

On topic though...couldn't help but think about the need for strong opposition. I get the feeling that this election is going to be a huge step backwards for the NDP. Loyalties asside, does anyone else see this coming?

I'd like to get some honest opinions from some traditional NDP loyalists on Carol James...do they have any confidence in her?

I think her guerrilla political warfare style will do enough damage to the minds of the unwashed masses in places where "the economy" and "forestry" are dead and people want "Change"

Look at the stadium as an example, since this thread is all about that afterall.
They, as Tom Mayenknecht said, "Floated a trial balloon" to gauge reaction to politicking this way. They then compare as crown corporation and their approved projects to a municipality of 1300 people and their community centre's leaking roof... This will have impact on people that feel like they have been "Screwed by the man" the people that live in PG and come from a family where generations toiled in plants like Northwood Pulp, or at Sawmills etc...

Pretty much anybody that has an interest in something other than self serving interests that has one iota of knowledge on the facts of the game here would be cutting off their nose to spite their face by voting NDP.

I spoke to three teacher friends of mine at a house party this weekend. They were going on and on about how they feel pressure from their peers to vote NDP strictly based on the facts that their perception that the NDP will spend more cash on Education than the Liberals. And the BCTF applies pressure to their associates to vote certain ways. When in their heart of hearts they all 100% agreed in principle and communicated to each other and the group at large that they were voting Liberal for the betterment of BC and our economy and industry that is working, however were all talking that they were dreading the inevitable chats with their colleagues at work.

I agree with you Dude about the need for strong opposition. Carole James and the NDP will be strong, but in volume of voice only, they lack credibility bigtime, and someone with credibility is what BC needs to keep Gordo's feet to the fire, as he is no angel either, by any stretch of the imagination.

i think ndp will lose again, due to the lack of a real idea on the part of carole james. i don't think they'll be relagated as badly as 2 elections ago (2 seats), maybe a little worse then last time. i think it will be dependent on how much worse the economic climate in bc gets before the election - even though, for the most part, the bc gov't can't do much about it...

I couldn’t help but laugh this morning.

Yeah, what an idiot. How does one get into politics and not completely remove any incriminating photos one may have on a social network site?

Stupid.

Saw Carol James this morning on the news, footage from a presser at Surrey Memorial. Her answer to the Liberals fast-tracking the bridge project was to put SMH back on the fast-track. IMO a good move, and in hindsight an obvious one if you happen to have been in the know- as the Libs are. They should have fast tracked both projects, and cut her off at the pass.

Her one and only hope is to continue to paint Gordo as the evil doer. It’s getting tired already. Am I the only one that would prefer a dynamic campaign focused on the positive plans you have planned for the future? Her and her team just plain don’t come across as either well organized, or intelligent.

...or even remotely grounded in any reality or appeal to some progressive thinking folks who oppose some of the projects the Liberals have undertaken.

-Not everyone is for the Gateway project, yet the NDP have come off their opposition in a move that reaks of just politics, when some voters may have sided with them on this
-An alternative green move than the carbon tax
-Running a campaign on smear instead of policy
-Pitting the rural and distant communities against "Big City" vs running a campaign on "uniting BC"

there are many flaws here, it saddens me as someone interested in politics. It makes me smile as an NDP hater though, the Commie Scum. ;)

Okay, time for some redneck bashing....:D

Gordon Campbell has never done anything self-incriminating.
Basi and Virk never played with trains.
Patrick Kinsella never asked anybody for a favour.
The Liberals can actually take credit for growing the BC economy.
Dude's actually busy.
JohnnyBlueNose has a life.

That's right, kids, bullshite on all 6 counts!:D

Too bad for Ray Lam - he could have provided us with some entertainment. Instead, we get a bigoted activist trying to tell the press that she "never realised that the word 'zionist' may have been offensive to Jewish people in North America." This is Dave Barrett's party?

Really, Carole James is quite clueless. She may be a good person, but she is NOT a leader by any stretch of the imagination. The Liberals will win this election not because they are the best party to govern the province, but because the ideological left of the province will again split their votes between the NDP and the Greens, and because Carole James will cost her party votes just because of her lack of personality. Not that Gordo has much of a personality either, though...

The last leader politically sensible enough to make this part of the world work beyond partisanship was Gordon Wilson, and he screwed himself and his party by screwing Judi.

All I can hope for is that enough people have the good sense to defeat the STV initiative.

Here's my cynical view on things.

Gordo's Libs don't actually do anything to grow the economy EXCEPT make it easier to do business in this province. Otherwise, they tend to stay out of it. They make it easier for natural Capatalism to flow.

Unfortunately, in buying that package, my fear is they are pooching what was already a poor medical system under the NDP into the ground.

My view on the NDP is that they will implement too many barriers to doing business; ineeficiencies and regulations that will drive companies out. They've don't it before, and James is so clueless their do it again. In addition, they don't have a plan for the medical system anyhow...except to fast track an existing project. No substance there. That, and they've already long since fcuked our educational system.

So, in my view I'm going for the worst of two bad parties. The Libs hands-off approach to private business works for me.

Dood:

Capitalism usually flows fairly well regardless of who the sitting government is in Victoria. In the past, it's been more fear than substance that's prevented "business" from being comfortable when the "Socialist Hordes" were in power. That doesn't mean that there weren't really dumb ideas passed into legislation, however. My big concern with the Liberals was and is the ideologically-driven bent to privatize things that are currently publically -controlled, whether the delivery mechanism is thought-out or not.

Both parties have albatrosses, and glaringly-ignored issues that they should be pilloried for, especially the following items:

1. the appalling delay to make our hospitals and schools seismically safe.
2. the abysmal state of our health care system, despite the previous state of our economy that both parties wanted to take credit for.
3. the number of homeless and addicted people who are still on the streets despite more than 20 years of "studying" the situation.

Hold your nose and vote for whoever smells the least...

Vote Rhino!
