Unbeaten Texas Christian University will try and break South Florida's 21-game home winning streak when the teams meet on Friday in a Conference USA matchup.
The 18th-ranked Horned Frogs (5-0, 2-0) expect South Florida's offense to present a bit of a challenge.

``They spread it out on offense and are a very athletic and physical football team with great team speed,'' said TCU coach Gary Patterson. ``The key will be to stop the run. We have to put them in third and long situations.''

TCU's defense may be up for the task. Ranked first in the conference and sixth nationally in scoring and rushing defense, the Horned Frogs average 12.4 points and 69.8 yards rushing allowed per game. After giving up 35 points to Tulane in the season opener, TCU has surrendered just 27 points since and shutout the opponent's offense in 13 of 20 quarters.

The Horned Frogs have been adept at forcing turnovers, picking off 10 passes this season. They forced two turnovers and had six sacks in a 27-0 shutout over Army last week.

The strong defense has helped the offense recover from a rash of injuries to some key starters.

Sophomore quarterback Tye Gunn returned to the field against Army, after a two-game absence due to a separated shoulder, and completed 6-of-10 for 103 yards in the first half. Junior Brandon Hassell led the team in Gunn's absence, completing 40-of-75 for 635 yards and four touchdowns in three starts.

``Both quarterbacks will take reps with the ones. If Tye's ready to go, he'll be the guy. I thought he handled the team well (against Army),'' said Patterson. ``He just needs to get into the game and not be tentative.''

Freshman Robert Merrill has done a great job filling in at tailback after TCU lost Ricky Madison to a season-ending knee injury and Lonta Hobbs injured his ankle in a 30-14 win over Vanderbilt on Sept. 20.

Merrill has rushed for at least 100 yards in all three of his starts. Hobbs may be well enough to return against South Florida, that have allowed an average of 164.8 yards rushing per game.

South Florida (3-1, 2-0), which owns the second-longest home winning streak behind Miami, is coming off a 31-28 double-overtime victory over Conference-USA rival Louisville. The Bulls drove 67 yards in the last five minutes of regulation to force the overtime on Clenton Crossley's touchdown run on fourth-and-1 with 10 seconds remaining.

Coach Jim Leavitt was quick to sober his players on the win.

``The biggest thing we talked about really in the locker room was the short week (coming up) and TCU for Friday night,'' said Leavitt. He added that ``we have to be real careful about getting too high on this win.''

This will be the first meeting between the schools.
