gillis during the presser mentioned that he thinks he can make the cap work with the sedins and luongo under contract, but would not say more than that

there is a report out of sweden, by the sedins swedish agents that they are looking to double their money... imo they aren't worth 7 mil each, i may be dreaming, but if you can get them between 5.5 and 6 mil each then you do it

Yeah, and teams would be hard pressed to fit $14M under their cap, except for TO and NYI, but who wants to play there? I think Gillis will get it done, and I'm still wondering why the Canucks are after the Swedish goalie Gustavson with Luongo still here. Are we signing him so we can deal Luongo and then balance out next year with Gustavson and Schneider battling for the #1? Or are we doing it to use Schneider as trade bait? Both scenarios work for me as they would both bring us prospects, picks or players that would help us.

I say give them the no trade, a 4 or 5 year deal, then make then take less money if they want the perk's. give them those and see if you can get them to take a 5 to 5.5 per deal. i would be comfortable with a 6 to 6.5 per deal. anything more, i don't think they are worth it. usually doller's like that are saved for eleet cusp of players. they are good, reliable players, but not great.

I know he's a young guy, but 2 mill per season for a guy who averages fewer than .5 points per game, seems a bit steep. I know he led the team in hits, but I do not consider him to be much of a physical force. I hope he proves me wrong since we need some grit that can play a regular shift.

Talk I heard on team1040 was that they could get creative and give the twins a 10 year contract, much like the Red Wings did for a couple of recent contracts which would/could bring the average salary cap hit down and hope they retire before the end of the contract.

Bernier is only 23... you have to keep guys like him in the organization. I think he will definitely improve on his numbers.

To be honest, I wouldn't have a problem with leaving the forwards pretty much status quo for next year. Just focus on retooling the backend.

Trade Bieksa and let Ohlund walk. Then bring in a puck moving/pp specialist dman. The forwards weren't that bad then again I don't know about Sundin coming back when you can use that money on someone younger like a Hossa or Gaborik type player.

Hossa is 29, Gaborik is 26.

Gaborik, although he has NEVER played a full season in the NHL (Got close with 81 gp in one season) has produced well over a point per game in his last 4 abbreviated seasons.

Hossa, Cammalerri, and Boumeester are out of our price range if the twins and luongo remain in my humble opinion.

Gaborik could be signed if the twins do a long term deal (Which Gillis is admittedly loathe to do) and come in at under 6 per.

He is worth the risk. He is a game breaker and would be the most exciting player to done a Nucks uni since Bure. He is one of the few guys in the NHL that can beat dmen one on one, not just take the puck wide, but actually dangle and blow by them.

He was money for the Wild once he returned from surgery and played really well, scoring goals for fun with plumbers for linemates, imagine what he could do with Kesler in the middle on his line with another speedy player like Raymond, or even a big guy to make space and clean up rebounds like Bernier even, or be re united with Demitra...

Last season: 13 goals/23 points in 17 games...
year prior: 42 goals and 83 points in 77 games...
year prior to that: 30 goals/ 57 points in 48 games...

The reason he is hurt all the time could be that he is not in the best shape for how explosive a skater he is (Nagging groin and hip and core issues throughout his career)

Wellwood was able to get into shape with the Canucks, Bernier has gained a step of footspeed and shed some weight, why can't Gaborik be someone we plug in?

I think the key word in all of this is "abbreviated." Every game matters, and there is a better chance than not that he won't be in the lineup for 20 games per season. How much is he asking anyhow? I'm guessing 5 million per season minimum, no? I'd gamble on 3 mill per season, but that's it.

Anyhow, we need a couple studs on the back-end more than anything else. Too bad, because we have wasted many a high draft pick on D-men who never panned out.

Boy, this post mortem on the ‘Nucks has sure killed the papers lately…and there are still some great stories being told in these playoffs!

The Ed Willis / Tony Gallagher battle of words seems to have renewed itself with new venom, now that the boys are golfing. Willis especially comes across as a supercilious know-it-all in his analysis of the whole thing, when three weeks ago you could read his column and honestly believe that the ‘Nucks should be planning the parade route. Last summer, he was quite easily the most negative writer in town for the way the team let go of Nonis, and for the Gillis hiring, etc. Back then, the team was going to hell in a hand-basket, and according to Willis was a sure lock to miss the playoffs this year and for the long term, foreseeable future. You’d have believed he was writing about the NY Islanders, FFS!

I have to say, I like a lot of the things Gillis said in his presser. I like that he is not satisfied, and felt the team underachieved. I liked his honesty about the injuries during the season, and impact of them. I liked that he outlined the club’s offseason plans for continued player development, etc. The last one, to me, seems like the biggest no-brainer, and I guess I’m shocked that more teams don’t micro-manage their players like this. Let’s be honest: it’s not good enough anymore to tell these guys to show up to camp in “the best shape of your life”. Players like Bernier are big investments, and like any big investment, the investor should be babying it to get the most out of it. Why wouldn’t the teams take on the task of dictating exactly what these guys should be doing in the offseason to improve, complete w/ milestones? Baseball has been doing this for eons.

For the first time in a long, long while, I get feeling entering this offseason that there is an actual plan at play to solidify the foundation of this club long-term. To me, that has a nice ring to it.
