WEEK #15—2007-12-17

Once again, no major surprises occurred in the VMSL’s Premier Division as all 14 teams played their last games—all cross-over matches—before the Christmas break. As a result, the situations at the top and at the bottom of the standings remained virtually the same. Sporting Club, despite Croatia’s noble effort to narrow the gap at the top of the Group ‘B’ table, looks like a sure thing to win the group title, while West Van FC remains in first place in Group ‘A’ despite losing to the red-hot Croatians. At the bottom of each table, the same teams remain in desperate need of points to avoid relegation although the AFC Leopards are slowly climbing out of last place, having recorded 5 consecutive positive results.

On Friday evening, at Byrne Creek School in Burnaby, ICSF Inter solidified its hold on third place in the Group ‘A’ table by edging the visiting Westside FC by a 2-1 margin. Westside got off to a dream start by scoring the opening goal right from the kick-off as young Chris Mehuys finished off a prolonged passing play as the Inter defenders were caught napping. Midway through the first half, Westside came close to adding to its lead when Inter’s young goalkeeper—Erman Ozkan—made an incredible finger-tip save on a wicked long-range shot by Colin Jones. This proved to be the turning point of the match as Inter equalized moments later when ‘GOLDEN BOOT AWARD’ leader, Kevin Crouch, cleverly chipped into the net from the edge of the penalty area, thus scoring his 14th goal of the season. In the second half, substitutes Matt Mori and Cristiano Tropeano ignited Inter’s attack with some dangerous forays that nearly resulted in the go-ahead goal. They were finally rewarded at the 75th minute when Tropeano was fouled outside the penalty area and near the goal line. Joseph Marrello swung a precise free kick to the near post where a soaring Matt Mori powerfully headed the ball into the net for the winning goal. Westside came back with a vengeance and almost tied things up when Dayne Jackson’s shot hit the goalpost after he had been set up by Frank Glassen. Westside’s defender Liam McAllister and Inter’s midfielder Joseph Marrello turned in outstanding performances in their respective positions. The loss leaves Westside FC near the bottom of the standings in the Group ‘B’ table, while Inter is still in the running for the Group ‘A’ title, particularly since West Van FC dropped a 2-0 decision to Croatia SC.

On Saturday, at Minoru Park in Richmond, the AFC Leopards continued their impressive unbeaten streak by defeating Indo FC by a 4-2 margin. The match was very important as both teams were trying desperately to get out of the dreaded relegation zone. As a result, the game got off to a great start as both teams demonstrated right from the start their drastic need for points. Indo FC took the early lead when former Whitecap David Morris sent a well-executed free kick into the Leopards’ penalty area. Some defensive miscommunication allowed Karm Lidder to head the ball past goalkeeper Josh Wicks—yet another former Whitecap playing in the VMSL! Indo FC could have added to its lead late in the second half but missed two glorious goalscoring opportunities. First, Gary Sidhu’s header hit the goalpost and then Kyle McDiarmid failed to capitalize on a wide open net opportunity with Wicks out of position. Indo’s inability to score on those opportunities proved to be fatal as the second half told a totally different story. In fact, the Leopards—led by second half substitute BJ Rockson—dominated proceedings during the entire second half and scored 4 times in rapid succession to put the match out of Indo’s reach. The first AFC goal was scored by Freddy Malek as his free kick slipped through goalkeeper Drew Smiley’s hands and into the net. A few minutes later, Desmond Tachie’s superb cross found a wide-open BJ Rockson who easily tapped the ball into the net for the go-ahead goal. The winning goal was scored shortly thereafter and again involved Tachie and Rockson. This time, Tachie’s pass was controlled in the air by Rockson who, with his back to the goal, proceeded to juggle the ball a few times before scissor-kicking it into the net for what should be considered a candidate for goal-of-the-year! The fourth goal, and Rockson’s third of the match, was the exact opposite of the previous one as a clearance by an Indo defender bounced off the back of Rockson’s head and into the net. That goal should definitely be nominated for the ugliest-goal-of-the-year award! Late in the game, Karm Lidder converted a penalty kick—awarded for a hand ball infraction inside the penalty area—for Indo FC’s second goal, thus making the score somewhat respectable. Despite the victory, the Leopards remain in last place in the Group ‘A’ standings, albeit only 3 points behind the Sapperton Rovers. Indo FC, on the other hand, is only 2 points ahead of the Metro-Ford Wolves in the Group ‘B’ relegation zone.

Also on Saturday, at William Griffin Park in North Vancouver, Columbus-Clan FC managed to defeat the Norvan Eagles by a 2-0 margin in a battle between two middle-of-the-pack teams. Columbus got off to a good start and took an early lead when a Tiernan King free kick deflected off a Norvan defender into the net. In the old days that would have been called an own goal! The rest of the game was fairly evenly played with neither team creating many goalscoring opportunities. Very late in the game, Tino Cucca was sent in on goal by a clever pass by Steve DeBlasio and added Columbus’ insurance marker. Columbus’ backline—composed of Leigh Sembaluk, Luca Bellisomo, Blair Robertson, and veteran Tony Gaita—played exceptionally well throughout the match and allowed the Eagles very few goalscoring chances. The victory lifts Columbus out of the relegation zone, while Norvan’s loss leaves the Eagles precariously close to the bottom of the Group ‘B’ table.

The third Saturday game took place at Burnaby Lake West Complex and featured the Vancouver Firefighters and the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves. After a hard-fought, but not very well-played, 90 minutes, both teams had to settle for a 1-1 final result. Metro-Ford took the lead midway through the first half when Milan Francisty played a clever one-two with fellow midfielder Russ Huggon before slotting the ball past the Firemen’s newly signed goalkeeper, Geoff Ayi-Bonte. The Firefighters knotted the score before the halftime whistle when Lucas Barrett headed home a well-taken corner kick by Aaron Keay. In the second half, the Firemen surged forward in search of the winning goal and came close on several occasions. Most notable were 3 missed chances by Lucas Barrett who inexplicably missed the net on every opportunity. At the other end of the pitch, Reece Miles also came close to scoring as his long-range shot bounced off the crossbar with Ayi-Bonte well beaten. The tie does neither team any favours as the Firefighters remain in the middle of the Group ‘A’ pack and the Wolves are still at the bottom of the Group ‘B’ standings.

The fourth, and final, Saturday game was played at Charles Best School in Coquitlam and featured the Group ‘B’ leaders, Sporting Club, and the struggling Sapperton Rovers. The final result, 3-1 in favour of Sporting Club, leaves the Portuguese team firmly in first place while the Rovers are still mired in the relegation zone in Group ‘A’. After an evenly-played 25 minutes, the tempo of the game changed dramatically when Sapperton’s young midfielder, Robert Sing, was ejected from the game for a violent conduct infraction. Sporting Club fully took advantage of the situation and scored the game’s first goal shortly thereafter when Mike Gomes dispossessed Sapperton’s veteran Mike Favaro, raced in all alone and fired a shot past goalkeeper Cory Breure from the edge of the penalty area. Early in the second half, Sporting Club added to its lead when Mike Wooldridge headed home a fine cross by Devon Greenside. Immediately thereafter, Ryan Dormer put the game out of the Rovers’ reach as he drilled the ball past Breure after having received a great pass from Wooldridge. Sapperton narrowed the margin near the end of the match when veteran Ryan McNabb redirected an Alex Jappy free kick past Sporting’s goalkeeper, Brian Brum. Things turned ugly just before the final whistle when a number of players from both teams engaged in a wrestling match. As a result, 2 players from each team were ejected—Sporting Club’s Jeff Yoon and Steve Dormer, as well as Sapperton’s Ed Bradford and Cory Breure.

On Sunday, at Adanac Park in Vancouver, Croatia SC defeated the Group ‘A’ leaders, West Van FC, by a convincing 2-0 margin. The Croatians dominated proceedings from start to finish and could easily have won by a wider margin had it not been for some bad luck and, mostly, poor finishing. Very early in the game, young Marinko Maras set up Rob Rogic whose shot missed the net by inches. A few minutes later, it was Oliver Heald’s turn to miss the net, this time on a set-up by another former professional, Johnny Sulentic. Early in the second half, Croatia finally took the lead on a controversial call as veteran Johnny Pashalidis was allegedly fouled inside the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded to Croatia SC. Oliver Heald, a former Whitecap, made no mistake from the penalty mark and scored what proved to be the winning goal. At this point, the former Trollers threw caution to the wind and, by doing so, gave Croatia even more scoring opportunities. In particular, Ian Clarke, Johnny Sulentic, and Oliver Heald had excellent chances to score on breakaways but were unable to put the finishing touch on the ball. Finally, very late in the match, Heald once again sailed in all alone and, this time, was able to slot the ball into the back of the net for the long awaited insurance marker. The victory keeps Croatia’s slim chances of catching Sporting Club alive, while West Van remains in first place in the Group ‘A’ standings, albeit by a slim margin.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: CROATIA SC for its excellent performance in defeating Group ‘A’ leaders, West Van FC by a convincing 2-0 margin. The Croatians, led by the fine play of former professionals Oliver Heald and Johnny Sulentic, controlled the play throughout the match and could easily have won by a larger margin. The victory keeps Croatia’s slim hopes of catching Sporting Club alive.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: AFC Leopards’ midfielder BERNARD (BJ) ROCKSON for his amazing performance in his team’s 4-2 victory over Indo FC. The Leopards survived a poorly played first half, a half which ended with Indo FC leading 1-0. Second half substitute BJ Rockson changed the entire tempo of the match as he scored 3 times in leading his team to a badly needed victory. One of the goals, the one that proved to be the winning goal, was a thing of beauty as Rockson controlled the ball at the edge of the penalty area and, with his back to the goal, proceeded to scissor-kick it into the back of the net. For his excellent performance, BERNARD ROCKSON will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2008-01-10.

WEEKS #16 and #17—2008-01-15

After a 2-week break, things got back to normal in the VMSL’s Premier Division as 13 of the 14 scheduled games were completed. The battles to avoid relegation became more intensive as 7 teams are still near the bottom of the table in their respective groups. Sporting Club was able to clinch first place in Group ‘B’ as a result of two victories—once at the expense of West Van FC and the other against Delta Blaze. In Group ‘A’, however, the battle for first place got more interesting as the former Trollers lost their third game in a row and are now within catching distance of 4 teams—ICSF Inter, Firefighters, Delta Blaze, and Columbus-Clan FC. In other words, the next 3 weeks should be extremely interesting, to say the least!

On Friday evening, at Point Grey School in Vancouver, Columbus-Clan FC accomplished two things in defeating Indo FC by a 4-0 score: first and foremost, the defending Province Cup champions climbed out of the relegation zone in the Group ‘A’ table and, secondly, they remain in contention for the Group ‘A’ title. Columbus took a while to get its act together against the desperate Indo FC and was lucky not to be down by a couple of goals as the visitors had a couple of glorious goalscoring opportunities in the early going. First, a brilliant header by Gurjit Dhaliwal was cleared off the goal line and then a David Samra shot bounced off the crossbar and out of danger. This seemed to serve as a wake-up call for the ‘Italians’ as they came storming back and scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick by Joe Scigliano. The penalty kick was awarded when a shot by Tiernan King, a shot that was destined for the back of the net, was cleared off the line by the hand of defender Gary Sidhu who was subsequently ejected from the game for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Columbus doubled its lead midway through the second half, also on a penalty kick as Tiernan King was tripped inside the penalty area and proceeded to convert the spot shot himself. Second half substitute Brendan Stabeno added Columbus’ third goal on a breakaway, while Justin Carvery rounded out the scoring on a brilliant shot after receiving a great pass from Luca Bellisomo. Late in the game, the referee decided to abandon the game as a result of some intolerable misbehaviour on the part of the Indo FC fans. The VMSL executive committee decided to let the 4-0 score stand since the abandonment was caused by the losing team. Columbus, who the previous week had dropped a 2-0 decision to the revitalized Metro-Ford Wolves, are now only 9 points behind first place West Van FC in the Group ‘A’ table, with 2 games in hand. Should Columbus manage to win the two make-up games, the margin will be reduced to only 3 points. Indo FC, on the other hand, is now all alone in last place in the Group ‘B’ table—3 points behind Metro-Ford, albeit with a game in hand. Last week Indo FC had managed to gain a point against the aspiring ICSF Inter by holding the heavily-favoured Italians to a 1-1 tie on a goal by Sonny Dhaliwal.

Also on Friday evening, at Byrne Creek School in Burnaby, Sporting Club of Vancouver continued to impress by clinching the Group ‘B’ title as a result of a clear-cut 3-0 victory over Delta Metro Blaze. Despite a scoreless first half, Sporting Club could easily have gone to the dressing room with a comfortable lead had it not been for the outstanding goalkeeping on the part of Delta’s Matt Clayton—as well as some superb defending by Daniel Tshimba. In the second half, however, Sporting’s supremacy became more obvious as the league leaders scored 3 unanswered goals to lay claim to all 3 points. First, veteran Mark Gomes sent a brilliant through ball to Mike Wooldridge who rounded the goalkeeper before depositing the ball into the net. Then, a few minutes later, a low cross by John Blair was volleyed into the back of the net by Matt Ormerod. Shortly thereafter, Ormerod became the provider in the third goal as his corner kick was volleyed into the Delta goal by Jag Gill. The previous week, in a match between the two divisional leaders, Sporting Club edged West Van FC by a 2-1 margin, with Ryan Dormer and Steve Frazao scoring the goals. It should be mentioned, however, that Sporting goalkeeper—Brian Brum—turned in a superlative performance as he made numerous outstanding saves against the inspired West Van team.

The third Friday evening game was held at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver and featured two of the top teams in the VMSL: West Van FC and Surrey United. After a rather tame first half, the intensity picked up immensely in the second half as both teams surged forward looking for the 3 points. Young Rizal Ganief, in particular, was a going concern for Surrey United as he drove the West Van defenders to distraction with his incredible speed and refined skills. Ganief came very close to opening the score midway through the second half but his blistering shot hit the crossbar and bounced out of danger. Eventually, Surrey United was able to open the scoring when playing-coach Steve Millar set up Lee Grant who promptly deposited the ball into the back of the net for the game winner. West Van replied with vigour but the excellent goalkeeping of Paul Shepherd, and well as the usually steady defending by Steve Millar, Dave Hleuka, and Graeme Magowan, allowed Surrey United to walk away with all 3 points. The previous week West Van had dropped another close decision—by a 2-1 score to Sporting Club—with veteran Paul Dailly scoring the lone goal. Surrey United, despite a 2-goal effort by Shawn Blakeway, had also suffered a narrow 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Firefighters.

On Saturday, at Charles Best School in Coquitlam, two desperate teams met in a relegation-avoidance battle as the Metro-Ford Wolves hosted the AFC Leopards. Both teams have recently come out of their respective slumps but were still in drastic need of points to remain in the Premier Division. After a very intense 90 minutes of play, the Wolves came away with a 1-0 victory, mostly due to the superb goalkeeping on the part of Mathew Bird and some excellent defending by Kingsley Jones, Brook Scott, and Richard Price. The lone goal was scored midway through the second half by Russel Huggon as he converted a penalty kick awarded when Huggon himself was tripped inside the AFC penalty area. The victory, coupled with last week’s 2-0 upset over Columbus, lifts the Wolves out of last place in the Group ‘B’ standings, while the Leopards, despite last week’s 2-1 victory over the Norvan Eagles, remain tied for last place, with the Sapperton Rovers, in the Group ‘A’ table. It should be noted that young Matthew Besuschko—in his first start of the season—and veteran Emilio Bottiglieri scored the Metro-Ford Wolves’ goals against Columbus. Also, young Adrian Kekec and veteran Nasser (Zico) Najm were the goalscorers in the AFC Leopards’ victory over Norvan.

Also on Saturday, at Kinsman Stadium in North Vancouver, ICSF Inter edged the Norvan Eagles by a 1-0 margin on a late goal by second half substitute Matt Mori. Mori controlled a long-range cross and quickly volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Giancarlo Martino for the lone goal of the contest. Last week, against Indo FC, Mori also scored for Inter in a 1-1 draw. Inter’s young goalkeeper, Erman Ozkan was brilliant throughout the contest as Indo FC attacked tenaciously in search of the all-important 3 points. Norvan, on the other hand, dropped a 2-1 decision to the AFC Leopards last week with Matt Hartwell scoring the lone Eagles’ goal. Norvan’s goalkeeper, Giancarlo Martino, was outstanding throughout the match, albeit in a losing cause.

The third Saturday game was played at the Burnaby Lake West Complex and featured the Vancouver Firefighters and Westside FC. After a very exciting and well-played 90 minutes, the Firemen walked away with a 2-1 victory, keeping them in the battle for first place in Group ‘A’. Westside, on the other hand, is still in the relegation zone in Group ‘B’, only 3 points ahead of last place Indo FC. The Firefighters got a off to a great start, scoring at the 12th minute mark when Jeff Buchanan and Peter Bergholz combined to set up Lucas Barrett for his first goal of the match. Fifteen minutes later, Barrett added what proved to be the winning goal as he took advantage of a neat passing play involving Bergholz and Phil Lensky. The Firemen then proceeded to squander numerous scoring chances and almost paid the price as Westside came storming back in the second half. With the Firefighters back on their heels, the Westsiders came very close to scoring on several occasions and were finally successful very late in the match when Taku Bradshaw, on a fine individual effort, finally put them on the scoreboard. Unfortunately for the visitors, it was a classic case of too-little, too-late! The previous week, the Firemen had defeated Surrey United by a 3-2 margin, with Phil Lensky, Jeff Buchanan, and Jeff Skinner scoring for the winners and Shawn Blakeway netting two goals for the losing team. The two victories leave the Firemen in third place in the Group ‘A’ standings, only 4 points behind West Van FC and with a game in hand.

Finally, on Sunday at Adanac Park in Vancouver, Croatia SC continued to impress by coming from behind to earn a 4-2 decision over the desperate Sapperton Rovers. The Rovers, playing without 4 regular starters due to suspensions, took the early lead when Trevor Todd hammered home a great pass by veteran Brian Gibson. Sapperton almost added to its lead when Colin Phillips’ header sailed over the crossbar. Before the halftime whistle, however Croatia’s Marteen Koorn stripped the ball away from a Sapperton player, beat a couple of defenders and blasted a wicked shot into the net from well outside the penalty area for the equalizer. The Rovers immediately bounced back and came close to regaining the lead on a couple of occasions but were unable to do so, mostly due to some bad finishing. In the second half, Croatia SC appeared to be a different team, perhaps due to an inspirational halftime speech by coach Keith Heald. Displaying some excellent skills, the Croatians took the lead early in the second half when Marinko Maras converted a clever set-up by young Brian Zaharija into the go-ahead goal. A few minutes later, Croatia added to its lead and scored the eventual winner when Steve Dickinson unleashed a great shot from a difficult angle after receiving a clever pass from Mirko Maras. The Rovers never gave up, however, and narrowed the margin shortly thereafter when Fabio Confeiteiro scored their second goal on a set-up by Trevor Todd. However, Croatia’s Johnny Sulentic put the game out of the Rovers’ reach as he caught goalkeeper Andrew Haines out of his net and cheekily chipped the ball over his head from long range for the insurance marker. The Rovers’ loss, their third in a row, leaves them tied for last place—with the AFC Leopards—in the Group ‘A’ standings, while Croatia remains in second place in the same group. The previous week, the Rovers had dropped a heart-breaking 1-0 decision to Westside FC in a battle between two ‘relegation-zone’ teams.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: METRO-FORD WOLVES for their excellent performances in winning two consecutive games against very tough opposition. Led by the defensive core of goalkeeper Mathew Bird and defenders Brook Scott, Kingsley Jones, and Richard Price, the Wolves were able to defeat the red-hot AFC Leopards by a 1-0 margin, as well as the Province Cup champions Columbus-Clan FC by a 2-0 score. Despite the two shut-out victories, the Wolves are still in the relegation zone in the Group ‘B’ standings, alongside Westside FC, the Norvan Eagles, and Indo FC.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Metro-Ford goalkeeper MATHEW BIRD for his amazing performance in his team’s 1-0 victory over the AFC Leopards. The Leopards, after falling behind 1-0, applied enormous pressure on the Metro-Ford defence and came close to knotting the score on several occasions. However, some outstanding saves on the part of Bird kept the visiting team off the scoreboard. It should also be noted that this is Bird’s second consecutive clean-sheet as he also shut out Columbus-Clan FC the previous week. For his excellent performance, MATHEW BIRD will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2008-01-24.

Late in the game, the referee decided to abandon the game as a result of some intolerable misbehaviour on the part of the Indo FC fans.

Yep. Classic though, most of our goals this season have been wrongfully described in the weekly report. I think it's our manager who writes the game report and obviously has a bad memory.

Actually, JB made a great move to spin a guy and center it to Matt Ormerod for his goal.

WEEK #18—2008-01-22

Five out of the 7 scheduled Premier Division games were played this past weekend since 2 games were postponed because of the accumulation of snow in high-lying areas. The 3 most important battles—Group ‘B’ championship, relegation-avoidance, and qualification for Province Cup playdowns—became even more intense as 13 out of the 14 teams are still in at least one of those battles. The only team that has little to play for—except pride, of course—during the remainder of the regular season is Sporting Club, since the Portuguese team has already clinched first place in the Group ‘B’ table and, as a result, a spot in the Province Cup playdowns. The Group ‘A’ title, on the other hand, is still up for grabs with 5 teams still in the running! At the bottom of the two tables, 7 teams are still fighting desperately to avoid relegation to the first division. As a result, all games scheduled for this coming weekend are of the utmost importance.

On Friday evening, at Byrne Creek School in Burnaby, the Vancouver Firefighters remained in contention for the Group ‘A’ title by defeating the almost unbeatable Sporting Club of Vancouver by a narrow 4-3 margin. The Firemen got off to a horrendous start as they were reduced to 10 men after only 12 minutes of play. Phil Lensky was ejected from the game for having accumulated 2 cautions and the Firefighters’ chances of beating the top team in the league seemed to vanish. However, much to their credit, the Firemen took a well-deserved lead shortly thereafter as young Lucas Barrett received a wonderful pass from veteran Jeff Skinner, raced in all alone and skipped past Sporting’s back-up goalkeeper Taylor Weakes before calmly depositing the ball into the back of the net. Sporting Club, however, came roaring back and scored twice before the half-time whistle—both goals coming off great headers. The goals were scored by Jag Gill and Matt Ormerod, both on great crosses from Mike Wooldridge. In true Firefighters’ fashion, however, the visitors bounced back in the second half and, led by the magnificent play of Niall Thompson, managed to score twice to take a 3-2 lead. On the first goal, Thompson cut the ball back to a wide-open Peter Bergholz who promptly blasted it into the net for the equalizer. A few minutes later, Thompson once again worked his magic as he dribbled the ball to the goal line before finding Jeff Buchanan with an exquisite pass. Without a moment’s hesitation, Buchanan rammed the ball home for the go-ahead goal. With only a few minutes remaining in the match, Sporting Club rallied back and once again tied things up when Jag Gill was fouled inside the Firefighters’ penalty area. On the ensuing penalty kick, Matt Ormerod scored his second goal of the match. However, in the dying moments of the match, Niall Thompson rounded out his brilliant performance by hammering home the winner after receiving a short free kick pass from Aaron Keay. As mentioned earlier, the loss does Sporting Club no harm as they have already clinched the Group ‘B’ title. The victory, however, keeps the Firemen in the middle of the battle for first place in Group ‘A’.

Yet another very important match was played on Friday evening, this one at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver between West Van FC and Indo FC. All 3 points were of the utmost importance to both teams, but for different reasons. The former Trollers needed a victory to remain in first place in Group ‘A’, while Indo FC was desperate for a victory to help its cause to avoid relegation. At the end of the match, the favourite home team walked away with a 4-2 victory, thus solidifying its lead at the top of the Group ‘A’ table. Indo FC began the game with more urgency and virtually dominated the entire first half but West Van retaliated in kind in the second half and eventually walked away with a rather comfortable margin of victory. Early in the match, Indo FC took the lead when former Whitecap David Morris set up youth call-up Sahil Sandhu for the opening goal of the contest. West Van tied things up shortly thereafter when Milad Rahmati, on a great individual effort, restored parity. Indo FC, however, continued to press and was rewarded at the 35th minute mark when Andrew Riopel found Sahil Sandhu with a perfect pass. The youngster outraced the flat-footed West Van defenders and, after the West Van goalkeeper—Marco Durante—had made the initial save, calmly slotted the ball home for the go-ahead goal. The second half, however, told a totally different story as the West Van boys composed themselves and proceeded to dominate every aspect of the match. The insertion of substitutes Ryan Glanville and Paul Dailly played a huge part as they made an immediate impact of the game. Jesse Fetterley tied things up early in the second half as he took advantage of a corner kick and slammed the ball past Indo’s goalkeeper Drew Smiley. Ten minutes later, Fetterley scored what proved to be the winning goal, this one on a brilliant set up by veteran Paul Dailly. With 10 minutes to go in the match, another veteran—Mike Dodd—was fouled near the corner of the 18-yard box. In his own inimitable style, Dailly unleashed one of the most spectacular shots ever witnessed in the VMSL as he curled the ball around the wall and into the top corner of the net, past Drew Smiley’s outstretched fingers. Truly a thing of beauty! As mentioned earlier, West Van FC thus remains in first place in Group ‘A’, while Indo FC is still mired in last place in the Group ‘B’ standings.

The third Friday evening game was held at Point Grey School in Vancouver and featured two of the hottest teams in the VMSL: the AFC Leopards and Croatia SC. The Leopards are in a desperate battle to avoid relegation in the Group ‘A’ table, while the Croatians are vying to gain a spot in the Province Cup playdowns. Unfortunately, the match did not live up to its high expectations, particularly in the first half, as neither team pressed forward with any noticeable desire to gain the lead. The lone goal of the opening period was scored by AFC’s Justin Cordick as he sent a seemingly harmless free kick into the net from long range. After a very lacklustre first half, Croatia took control of the situation and started displaying much more vigour and intensity. Very early in the second half, the Croatians were rewarded for their efforts when veteran Johnny Pashalidas set up former Whitecap Johnny Sulentic with a picture-perfect pass. Without hesitation, Sulentic proceeded to slot the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Josh Wicks—yet another former Whitecap playing in the VMSL—for the typing goal. Croatia kept pressing and came close to scoring the winning goal on a few occasions but some poor finishing, some great goalkeeping of Wicks’ part, and Lady Luck kept the score knotted at 1-1 till the final whistle. In particular, Steve Dickinson and Marteen Koorn had the best chances but both saw their shots go wide of the net. The final 1-1 score does neither team any favours, since Croatia SC still needs some results in order to clinch a spot in the Province Cup while the Leopards are still mired in a last place tie with the Sapperton Rovers in the Group ‘A’ standings.

On Saturday, at Sutherland School in North Vancouver, two desperate teams met in a relegation-avoidance battle as the Norvan Eagles hosted the Sapperton Rovers. Both teams are near the bottom of the table in their respective groups and needed the victory in their quest to remain in the Premier Division. However, as if often the case, the Eagles and the Rovers had to settle for a 1-1 tie despite the fact that both teams tried very hard to walk away with the entire 3 points. Sapperton had the best chances in the early going as Trevor Todd and Alex Jappy came very close to scoring but, on both occasions, the shots went wide of the net. However, it was Norvan that took the lead as the Eagles’ Corey Birza took advantage of a defensive blunder and calmly deposited the ball into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal. Norvan almost added to its lead late in the first half when a great shot by Jamie Dunnett forced goalkeeper Andrew Haines to make a remarkable save. In the second half, the Rovers turned things around and eventually knotted the score when young Fabio Confeiteiro converted a great pass from veteran Mike Favaro into the equalizer. Both Confeiteiro and Favaro came close to scoring the winning goal late in the match, but both saw their shots go over the crossbar. The tie leaves both teams near the bottom of the pack, and therefore still in the relegation zone, in their respective groups

Finally, on Sunday at Hastings Bowl in Vancouver, Columbus-Clan FC edged Westside FC by a 2-1 score after a rather lacklustre 90 minutes of play. Despite the fact that both teams were in urgent need of the 3 points, the match was poorly played and certainly did not reflect the urgency that one would have expected from such an important game. Columbus took the lead midway through the first half when Nathan Quan sent Tino Cucca down the left flank with a pin-point pass. After beating two defenders, Cucca—another former Whitecap playing in the VMSL—found a wide-open Steve DeBlasio who easily tapped the ball into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal. Late in the first half, Westside equalized when Taku Bradshaw took advantage of some poor communication among the Columbus defenders before slotting home a cross from Liam McAllister. Early in the second half, Tino Cucca sent Joe Scigliano towards goal with a brilliant pass. Scigliano, beat a couple of defenders before placing a perfect shot to the far top corner of the net. Certainly the highlight of the match! It should be noted that Scigliano was recently named BC’s ‘Player of the Year’ at the annual BCSA awards banquet! The victory improves Columbus’ hopes of winning the Group ‘A’ title, as well as earning a spot in the Province Cup, but the loss leaves Westside near the bottom of the Group ‘B’ table.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: VANCOUVER FIREFIGHTERS for their excellent performance in defeating the practically unbeatable Sporting Club by a 4-3 margin. The Firemen accomplished their amazing feat despite playing with only 10 men for most of the game, due to the ejection of Phil Lensky. Led by the brilliant performance of Niall Thompson, the Firefighters overcame a 2-1 deficit and eventually gathered all 3 points with a late goal. The victory keeps the Firemen’s chances of capturing the Group ‘A’ title alive!

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: FIREFIGHTERS’ forward NIALL THOMPSON for his amazing performance in his team’s 4-3 victory over Sporting Club. In his first game after a long layoff due to injury, Thompson appeared to be at his very best as he set up two excellent goals—by Lucas Barrett and Jeff Buchanan—and added a brilliant goal of his own in the dying moments of the match to earn his team the badly needed 3 points. For his excellent performance, NIALL THOMPSON will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2008-01-31.

WEEK #19—2008-01-29

Only four of the 7 scheduled Premier Division games were played this past weekend since 3 games were postponed because of the heavy snow fall. The only issue that was resolved—and a minor one at that—was the fact that newly-promoted Delta Metro Blaze is now officially out of the running for the Group ‘A’ title, due to its 3-1 loss at the hands of the visiting Norvan Eagles. However, 4 teams remain in contention for the Group ‘A’ championship, West Van FC, Firefighters FC, ICSF Inter, and Columbus-Clan FC. Ironically, Columbus—having played only 15 games—is also in the relegation zone, needing at least one point to remain in the Premier Division.

On Friday evening, at Point Grey School in Vancouver, West Van FC solidified its slim hold on first place in the Group ‘A’ table by beating Westside FC by an emphatic 3-0 margin. The West Van boys came storming out of the starting blocks and quickly took a well-deserved lead as Jesse Fetterley scored his 11th goal of the year off a corner kick by Milad Rahmati. The young and quick Westside team bounced back with vigour and came close to tying things up on two separate occasions. First, Colin Jones raced in all goal only to be thwarted by a last-moment tackle by veteran (and new father!) Trevor Short. Secondly, goalkeeper Marco Durante came up with a big save on an excellent shot by Andrew Cooke to preserve West Van’s one-goal lead. Early in the second half, West Van added its second goal as Ryan Glanville was set free down the left flank after a clever passing play involving veterans Nico Berg and Mike Dodd. Glanville’s low shot—from a very difficult angle—found the back of the net and thus gave the visitors an almost insurmountable 2-0 lead. Some might say that the shot was rather fortuitous—since it originally appeared to be a cross—but, nevertheless, the ball ended up in the back of the net for West Van’s insurance marker. Shortly thereafter, the former Trollers scored the clincher as Milad Rahmati took advantage of a defensive mix-up to score from close range. As mentioned earlier, West Van FC remains in first place in the Group ‘A’ standings as a result of the well-earned victory, while Westside FC is now mired in penultimate place in Group ‘B’.

Also on Friday evening, at Holly Park in Delta, the Norvan Eagles, under the guidance of newly-appointed coach Jim Dunnett, managed to defeat the hot-and-cold Delta Metro Blaze by a 3-1 score. The Blaze got off the a good start and forced the visitors back on their heels in the early going, but some outstanding defending on the part of Barret Germschield and Nick Seddon kept the young Delta team off the scoresheet. In fact, it was Norvan that took the lead when Max Baessato sent Blake Burgon flying into the penalty area with a great pass. Burgon was consequently tripped inside the box, a foul which resulted in a penalty kick being awarded to the Eagles. Danny Muir proceeded to fire the ball into the net from the penalty mark for the go-ahead goal. Early in the second half, Norvan doubled its lead when Jamie Dunnett’s free kick was driven fiercely into the net by Corey Birza. The Blaze bounced back, however, and narrowed the margin shortly thereafter when newly-transferred Cam Wilson superbly headed home a fine cross from Sang Yoon Hwang. At this point, both teams battled hard for next critical goal and it was the Eagles who succeeded when Corey Birza scored his second goal of the match after Jamie Dunnett and Blake Burgon opened up the Delta defense with some skillful passing. Moments later, Dunnett was carelessly fouled inside the 18-yard box but Corey Birza saw his spot shot saved by Delta’s goalkeeper Matt Clayton, thus denying Birza his hat-trick goal. Defensively, Max Baessato played extremely well for the Eagles, while midfielders Danny Muir and James Wilton worked tirelessly throughout the contest in a winning cause. Although the result does not totally place Norvan out of the danger zone, the Eagles can now breathe a sigh of relief as they have a 4-point lead over Westside FC, with only two games remaining in the schedule. Delta, on the other hand, is now officially out of the running for the Group ‘A’ title.

On Saturday, at Burnaby Lake West Complex, two desperate teams met in a do-or-die match as the Sapperton Rovers hosted the Metro-Ford Wolves in yet another ‘relegation-avoidance’ battle. At the end of a fiercely-contested 90 minutes of non-stop action, the Wolves emerged 1-0 victors over the always tough and competitive Rovers. After an evenly-played opening 20 minutes, the Wolves took control of the game and scored the lone goal of the match when veteran Emilio Bottiglieri broke down the left flank and neatly found a streaking Reece Miles who easily deposited the ball into the net for his first goal in senior competition. Sapperton fought back and nearly tied things up when Fabio Confeiteiro blasted a long-range shot just wide of the net. Before the halftime break, the Wolves had a golden opportunity to increase their lead but young Justin Isidro saw his well-taken shot saved brilliantly by Sapperton goalkeeper, Andrew Haines. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first as the Wolves applied most of the pressure but some outstanding goalkeeping on the part of Andrew Haines—particularly on shots by Russel Huggon, Adam Day, and Andrew Veer—kept the score respectable. The Rovers also came close to scoring but veteran Mike Favaro had his header saved by a well-positioned Metro-Ford goalkeeper, Mathew Bird. Defensively, Metro-Ford’s Richard Price, Brook Scott, and Kingsley Jones were once again towers of strength thoughout the contest, making life reasonably easy for goalkeeper Bird, as he earned his third consecutive shutout. The Wolves thus climb out of penultimate place in the Group ‘B’ standings, while the Rovers remain tied—with the idle AFC Leopards—for last place in Group ‘A’.

The last match of the weekend was played Saturday evening at Minoru Park in Richmond and featured Indo FC and the visiting Vancouver Firefighters. The two teams had totally different reasons for wanting all 3 points since the Firemen are still in a battle for first place in the Group ‘A’ standings, while Indo FC is trying desperately to get out of the Group ‘B’ cellar. Despite the fact that Indo FC carried most of the play throughout the contest—and particularly in the first half—it was the visitors who walked away with the entire 3 points as a result of a 2-0 victory. Indo FC totally dominated the entire first half and came close to scoring on several occasions. Paul Bolina, in particular, squandered an early golden opportunity when he fired his shot wide of the net from close range. As luck would have it, however, it was the Firemen that took the lead late in the first half when an Aaron Keay corner kick was headed towards the net by Jeff Buchanan. After goalkeeper Drew Smiley had made a great save, young Lucas Barrett pounced on the rebound and drilled the ball home for what proved to be the winning goal. In the second half, Indo FC continued to press but, once again, were unable to find the back of the net. In fact, veteran Andrew Riopel and young Sahil Sandhu agonizingly watched their shots ring off the woodwork with the Firemen’s goalkeeper well beaten. However, Indo’s best scoring opportunity came when they were awarded a penalty kick for a hand ball infraction inside the box. Inexplicably, former Whitecap Dave Morris fired the shot wide of the net, thus ending his team’s chances of getting back in the game. Shortly thereafter, against the run of play, the Firefighters scored the insurance marker as Jeff Buchanan, after rounding the last Indo defender, cut the ball back for Bob Anderson who calmly tapped the ball past Smiley. Defensively, Jeff Skinner and Steve McAuley played extremely well for the Firemen, while goalkeeper Geoff Ayi-Bonte was forced to make several key saves throughout the contest. Indo FC thus remains mired in last place in the Group ‘B’ table, while the Firemen are still in contention for the Group ‘A’ title.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: NORVAN EAGLES for their excellent performance in defeating the aspiring Delta Metro Blaze by a 3-1 margin. Led by the great defensive work by Max Baessato, Nick Seddon, and Barret Germscheid, the Eagles survived some early Delta pressure and eventually were able to score 3 excellent goals, two by young Corey Birza and one by midfielder Dan Muir. The 3 points earned by the Eagles help their chances of avoiding relegation immensely!

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: NORVAN EAGLES’ young forward COREY BIRZA for his remarkable performance in his team’s all-important 3-1 victory over the Delta Blaze. Birza took advantage of his incredible speed to race past Delta’s defenders to score both goals in similar fashion. It should be noted that Birza could have added a third goal—thus rounding out his hat-trick—but had his penalty kick brilliantly saved by Delta goalkeeper, Matt Clayton. For his excellent performance, COREY BIRZA will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2008-02-07.

WEEK #20—2008-02-05

Only two Premier Division games were played this past weekend as the accumulation of snow in most areas forced the postponement of the other 5 matches. The heavily-favoured Vancouver Firefighters dropped out of the race for the Group ‘A’ title by dropping a 3-2 decision to the desperate AFC Leopards, while Sporting Club of Vancouver edged Indo FC—also by a 3-2 margin—in a match featuring the top team in the VMSL against the Group ‘B’ bottom feeders. The two results proved without a shadow of a doubt the fact that parity does exist in the Premier Division of the VMSL!

On Friday evening, at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster, the AFC Leopards hosted the hot-and-cold Vancouver Firefighters in a Group ‘A’ battle. The match was very important to both teams but for totally different reasons. The Firemen needed the victory to remain in contention for the group championship—and perhaps the VMSL title—while the Leopards are still trying desperately to climb out of last place and thus avoid relegation. After a very exciting 90 minutes of non-stop action, the Leopards kept their hopes of staying in the Premier Division alive by walking away with a 3-2 victory. The Firefighters got off to a great start and took a 1-0 lead right from the opening kick-off as Niall Thompson sent Trevor Rosenscrans flying in on goal. From the edge of the penalty area, Rosenscrans hammered a blistering shot towards the Leopards goal, a shot that was inadvertently deflected into the net by former Whitecap Diaz Kambere. The Leopards responded with grit to the early goal and started pressing with remarkable determination in search of the equalizer. On the other hand, the Firemen laid back and eventually paid the price as AFC was able to knot the score midway through the first half when Adrian Kekec picked up a rebound from a Desmond Tachie shot and calmly deposited the ball into the back of the net for the tying goal. Shortly thereafter, Tachie and Kekec reversed roles as Tachie was able to convert a great pass from Kekec into the go-ahead goal. Early in the second half, Tachie rounded out an impressive individual performance by scoring what proved to be the winning goal by beating several defenders before firing an excellent shot past the Firefighters’ goalkeeper. Late in the game, Greg Pears converted a penalty kick into the Firemen’s second goal, but it was a classic case of “too little, too late” as the Leopards held on for the well-deserved victory. As mentioned earlier, the loss ends the Firefighters’ aspirations of winning the Group ‘A’ title, while the Leopards are now 3 points clear of last place in the same group.

On Saturday evening, at Minoru Park in Richmond, Sporting Club of Vancouver edged the desperate Indo FC by a 3-2 margin in a match that fully lived up to its expectations. Indo FC had the edge in play in a scoreless first half with former Whitecap David Morris coming closest to scoring when—on a breakaway—he watched painfully as his shot bounced off the goalpost. Early in the second half, Indo FC took the lead as youth call-up Sahil Sandhu continued his hot streak by scoring his third VMSL goal on a fine individual effort. Sporting Club, however, bounced back tenaciously and quickly scored twice to gain possession of the lead. First, Meysam Soltani received a long through ball from Mike Gomes and proceeded to set up Mike Wooldridge who, without a moment’s hesitation, placed the ball into the net for the tying goal. Then, Devon Greenside set up Ryan Dormer for the go-ahead goal with another excellent through ball. However, at the 80th minute mark, Indo FC tied things up on yet another excellent individual effort by 18-year old Sahil Sandhu. At this point, Indo FC threw caution to the wind and started pressing frantically for the all-important go-ahead goal. Paul Bolina came very close to accomplishing Indo’s goal when he saw his shot cleared off the line by defender Mike Gomes—after goalkeeper Brian Brum had made a great save on a Sahil Sandhu shot. As luck would have it, however, it was Sporting Club that took advantage of Indo’s reckless attacking when, on a counter-attack, Meysam Soltani converted a fine cross by Ali Kashfia into the winning goal. The loss leaves Indo FC mired in last place in the Group ‘B’ table, 3 points behind the idle Westside FC and with only one game remaining.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: AFC LEOPARDS for their impressive performance in defeating the aspiring Vancouver Firefighters by a 3-2 margin. The Leopards bounced back from an early 1-0 deficit and, led by Desmond Tachie’s goalscoring ability, were able to capture the all-important 3 points. Although the victory does not guarantee that the Leopards will avoid relegation, it does help a great deal towards that quest!

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: AFC LEOPARDS’ forward DESMOND TACHIE for his remarkable performance in his team’s all-important 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Firefighters. Tachie contributed immensely to the Leopards’ victory by scoring two wonderful goals. He also played a huge part in the Leoapards’ other goal as it was his shot that was saved by the Firemen’s goalkeeper, leading to Adrian Kekec scoring on the rebound. For his excellent performance, DESMOND TACHIE will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2008-02-14.

I do know that Sporting's first goal was NOT a brilliant through ball........One of our defenders tipped it right to their forward who hit it first time. Great perspective. :D

The youth call-up is 16........not 18 and has 4 goals in 3 games. Too bad we didn't have him from the start of the season. I have a feeling we wouldn't be in the position we're in........

Sahil is not just an average 16 year old... this kid has tremendous skill and speed.. I coached him at Princess Margaret when he was in grade 9 playing senior soccer and didnt look at all out of place. He has been on all national teams for his age group for the last 3 years and I wouldnt be surprised if he lands at a top 10 NCAA Div 1 school after he is done high school next year, or even ends up going to Europe to try out because he is still young.

And why is that sad? He's better than the majority of players we have played against this year? What is your ****ing point caller?

By the way, why did you quote that? I can't see that anywhere.
