IMPERIAL CUP—SEMI-FINALS

2009-03-17

As predicted by most people, the Imperial Cup final will feature the newly-crowned VMSL champions—West Van FC—and the red-hot Columbus-Clan FC. The game should be a very interesting one, since the two teams split the previously-played league games with one victory apiece. Both matches were highly-contested and extremely intense, leading us to believe that the Imperial Cup final will be a very competitive and emotional affair. It will take place on Sunday, March 29 at Kinsman Stadium in North Vancouver. Kick-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.

GAME #16: West Van FC – Croatia SC 1-0 OT: On Friday evening, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, the 2008-09 Premier Division champions—West Van FC—managed to advance to the Imperial Cup final round by edging the visiting Croatia SC by a 1-0 overtime margin. A very large crowd witnessed an extremely exciting match between two very talented teams. West Van controlled the play in the early going and came close to scoring—on shots by Desmond Tachie and Ryan Glanville—but Croatia’s goalkeeper—Didar Sandhu—rose to the occasion and pulled off a couple of excellent saves. The Croatians bounced back and started to exert some pressure of their own, making life difficult for the West Van backline. Maarten Koorn, in particular, came very close to scoring when his wicked shot from the edge of the penalty area sailed just inches wide of the net. Forwards Gary Anderson and Adrian Kekec were also unlucky not to give Croatia SC the lead as they were both denied excellent goalscoring opportunities by some gritty defending on the part of West Van defenders Trevor Short and Max Baessato. The second half got off to a terrible start for West Van as veteran Trevor Short was ejected from the game for having received his second caution. However, despite being down to 10 men, it was the former Trollers that took over the reins of the match, mostly due to Desmond Tachie’s amazing speed and Ryan Glanville’s indomitable work rate. However, some excellent defending on the part of Croatia’s Robin Hart and Ryan Zaharjia kept the match scoreless during regulation time. Very late in the second half, Croatia’s defensive midfielder—Bradley Haga—was also sent off for having received his second caution of the match. With the score knotted at 0-0 after 90 minutes of play, the game went into overtime—with both teams playing with 10 men. Very early in extra time, West Van FC almost took the lead but a wicked drive by Desmond Tachie—on a set-up by Milad Rahmati—bounced off the crossbar with Didar Sandhu clearly beaten. Midway through the second overtime half, West Van finally took the lead as Corey Birza and Max Baessato combined to set up man-of-the-match Desmond Tachie for the winning goal from close range. To add insult to injury, Croatia’s defender Ryan Zaharjia was ejected, late in the game, for a foul and abusive language offence. It should be mentioned that Marco Durante earned the clean sheet in the West Van goal. West Van FC will now take on arch-rivals Columbus-Clan FC in the Imperial Cup final.

GAME #17: Surrey United Firefighters – Columbus-Clan FC 1-2: On Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park, the visiting Columbus-Clan FC defeated the Surrey United Firefighters by a narrow, but well-earned, 2-1 margin thus advancing to the Imperial Cup final against West Van FC. The visiting ‘Italians’ got on the scoreboard early in the match as Rizal Ganief sent Tino Cucca in on goal with an excellent pass. Cucca then proceeded to dribble around goalkeeper Paul Shepherd before slotting the ball into the net for the all-important go-ahead goal. Ganief almost doubled the score minutes later as he rang a wicked shot off the goalpost with Shepherd well beaten. Then, midway through the first half, veteran Tiernan King also hit the woodwork as his brilliant shot bounced off the cross-bar and out of danger. Late in the first half, one of the strangest goals ever witnessed in the VMSL was scored by Columbus goalkeeper Thomas Lindley. In fact, a long punt by Lindley bounced at the edge of the Surrey United penalty box and into the net, past a bewildered Paul Shepherd for what proved to be the winning goal. The Firefighters fought back tenaciously in the second half and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions but former professionals Niall Thompson and Jeff Clarke both narrowly missed the net on glorious opportunities. Late in the game, Surrey United finally got on the scoresheet when a well-taken free kick by Tommy Lowndes found a wide-open Lucas Barrett who had no difficulty in slamming the ball into the Columbus net from close range. Midfielder Steve DeBlasio, as well as defenders Tynan Diaz, Tony Gaita, Robbie Cairns, and Jonathan Poli played very well for Columbus throughout the match. Columbus-Clan FC will now face West Van FC in the Imperial Cup final in what promises to be a very exciting and entertaining match.

LEAGUE GAME: Metro-Ford Wolves – Delta WFC 8-0: On Saturday, at Town Centre Park in Coquitlam, the Metro-Ford Wolves ended their regular season in fine fashion by demolishing the young Delta lads by an emphatic 8-0 margin. Former Whitecap Alfredo Valente led the way with 3 brilliant goals, while veteran Joey Scigliano emulated his teammate by also recording a hat trick. Emilio Bottiglieri and Brook Scott rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Mathew Bird recorded the shutout in the Metro-Ford net, probably the easiest of his career! As a result of the victory, the Wolves clinched second place in the VMSL Premier Division standings.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: WEST VAN FC for its excellent performance in defeating Croatia SC by a slim, but well-earned, 1-0 margin. Led by the excellent play of forwards Ryan Glanville and Desmond Tachie, as well as the fine goalkeeping of Marco Durante, the former Trollers have earned a spot in the Imperial Cup final—against Columbus-Clan FC.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: West Van FC’s forward DESMOND TACHIE for his magnificent performance in his team’s 1-0 overtime victory over the very tough Croatia SC. Tachie was a thorn on the side of the Croatian defenders throughout the match and came close to scoring on several occasions. He was finally rewarded for his brilliant effort during the second overtime period as he slotted home a fine pass by Max Baessato for the game’s lone goal. For his excellent performance, Desmond Tachie will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2009-03-31.

WEEK #22—2009-03-17

The regular season came to an end this past weekend as 5 rather meaningless games were played. Only one major upset took place as the Norvan Eagles defeated the recently-crowned West Van FC by a narrow 2-1 margin in the ‘North Shore derby’.

ICSF Inter – Croatia SC 1-0: On Friday evening, at Vancouver Technical School, ICSF Inter clinched 4th place in the league standings by narrowly defeating the visiting Croatians by a 1-0 margin. Inter controlled most of the action in the first half and took the lead at about the 25th minute mark when Joseph Marrello calmly slotted home a rebound from close range. The rebound was the result of a phenomenal save by goalkeeper Didar Sandhu on a wicked drive by Inter’s Kevin Crouch. In the second half, both teams shared goalscoring opportunities with Crouch once again coming close to scoring for Inter but, once again, his close-range shot was brilliantly saved by Sandhu. At the other end of the field, Nico Kerasiotis and Adrian Kekec squandered a couple of excellent chances as they fired their shots wide of the net. Defensively, Robin Hart had an outstanding game for the Croatians, while midfielders Joseph Marrello and Mike Winters turned in excellent performances in leading Inter to victory. ICSF thus ends the regular season with a 10-7-5 record, while the 6th place Croatians finish the season at 8-9-5.

West Van FC – Norvan Eagles 1-2: Also on Friday evening, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, the Norvan Eagles ended their season on a bright note as they defeated the Premier Division champions—West Van FC—by a narrow, but well-earned, 2-1 margin. Norvan took the lead midway through the first half when Shawn Blakeway took advantage of a clever pass from Oscar Jimenez, raced in all alone and slotted the ball behind goalkeeper Nick Boyd for the go-ahead goal. West Van knotted the score at about the 65th minute mark as Alan McIndoe pounced on a loose ball in a goalmouth scramble and scored from close range. A few minutes later, the Eagles were able to secure the victory as the two Gibsons—Brian Gibson and Gibson Bardsley—combined to score the winning goal. Bardsley, after receiving a patented long-range pass from playing/coach Steve Millar, beat a couple of West Van defenders at the edge of the penalty area, crossed the ball to Gibson who cheekily back-healed it into the net from close range. Defensively, veterans Steve Millar, Edward Bradford, and Brian Fowler were towers of strength throughout the contest, while young goalkeeper Nick Riccardi made a very successful Premier Division debut in the Eagles’ net. In particular, Riccardi got off to a great Premier Division start when he brilliantly stopped West Van’s Meysam Soltani on an early clear-cut breakaway. Norvan thus ends the regualar season with a 7-6-9 record.

RCIU Legends - Surrey United Firefighters 1-5: On Saturday, at Minoru Park in Richmond, the visiting Surrey United Firefighters ended their season on a positive note by defeating the ‘Legends’ by an elaborate 5-1 margin. In fact, had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Club Ireland’s Matt Clayton, the score could easily have reached double figures! Early in the game, Clayton was called upon to make a fantastic save on a shot by Surrey’s playing-coach Niall Thompson. At about the 20th minute mark, however, the Firemen took the lead when a long punt by goalkeeper Paul Shepherd was controlled by Lucas Barrett who then proceeded to set up a streaking Cam Wilson for the game’s opening goal. Early in the second half, young Gagan Josan set up Cam Wilson with a nifty pass, a play that resulted in Surrey United’s—and Wilson’s—second goal. Midway through the second half, the Legends were able to get on the scoreboard as former Whitecap Jason Jordan took advantage of a defensive blunder, gained possession of the ball and proceeded to set up Darren Prentice for Richmond’s lone goal. Surrey United responded with a vengeance and scored 3 more goals in rapid succession before final whistle. A close-range flick by Gagan Josan, a great shot by Jeff Buchanan, and a marvellous run by Cam Wilson resulted in the visitors’ final 3 goals. Surrey United thus ends the season in 8th place, with a 5-9-8 record, while the Legends’ final record is a mediocre 5-7-10.

Columbus-Clan FC – Sporting Club of Vancouver 5-1: On Sunday, at Vancouver Technical School, Columbus-Clan drove the last nail in Sporting Club’s coffin by defeating the defending VMSL champions by an emphatic 5-1 margin. The only issue that remained unsolved before the opening kick-off was who was going to win the ‘GOLDEN BOOT’ award, Tiernan King or Rizal Ganief? Both Columbus forwards were in the running for the coveted trophy with King holding a slight 1-goal edge over his young teammate. The problem was easily resolved by King’s incredible hat-trick, although it must be said that Ganief also played extremely well throughout the contest. In fact, it was Ganief that set up Jeff DeBlasio for the opening goal early in the match with an immaculate pass that DeBlasio had no difficulty whatsoever in tapping home for the go-ahead goal. Shortly thereafter, Ganief unleashed a wicked drive from the edge of the penalty area, a drive that bounced off the crossbar and out of danger. Just before the halftime whistle, the ‘Tiernan King show’ began as the young veteran pounced on a loose ball, raced in on goal all alone, and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. Early in the second half, King added to his team’s margin of victory by scoring an almost identical goal to his first—once again on a breakaway. Sporting Club fought back and got on the scoreboard as Brian Brum’s shot deflected off defender Blair Robertson and into the net. Shortly thereafter, King added his third goal of the match—and 17th of the season—once again on a partial breakaway. Late in the match, Tino Cucca rounded out the scoring for Columbus on a great cross by Ylya Malek. Columbus thus finishes the season in third place, with an enviable 12-6-4 record, while Sporting Club will be relegated to the first division due to its very disappointing 3-5-14 record.

Croatia SC – West Van FC 1-1: Two of the top teams in the VMSL faced off on Sunday at Hastings Bowl in what many so-called fans called a meaningless match. In actual fact, the game was very well-played and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that pride is a very important ingredient in any contest! Both teams tried hard to gain all 3 points but, as is often the case, had to settle for a tie. Early in the match, former professional Johnny Sulentic took a long-range free kick that sailed over the head of a bewildered Marco Durante for the game’s opening goal. Shortly thereafter, the Croatians came close to doubling their lead but Gary Anderson’s hard drive from the edge of the penalty area sailed over the net. The former Trollers bounced back and came close to tying things up on several occasions, but Croatia’s goalkeeper Didar Sandhu stood tall and kept the visitors off the score sheet for the rest of the first half. Early in the second half, however, speedy Desmond Tachie was able to knot the score as he was sent in all alone by a great pass from Alan McIndoe. West Van forward Ryan Glanville was unfortunate not the score the winner when he agonizingly watched his close-range shot bounce off the goalpost with Sandhu well-beaten. West Van FC thus closes the season in first place, with a 14-3-5 record, while the Croatians will have to settle for 6th place and a 8-9-5 record.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: The NORVAN EAGLES for their gritty performance in defeating the VMSL champions—West Van FC—by a narrow, but well-deserved, 2-1 margin. Led by the excellent play of veteran defenders Steve Millar, Edward Bradford, and Brian Fowler the Eagles kept the vaunted West Van forwards at bay for most of the contest. Young goalkeeper Nick Riccardi also played amazingly well in his Premier Division debut.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Columbus’ forward TIERNAN KING for having clinched the “GOLDEN BOOT AWARD” with his 3-goal performance against the RCIU Legends. The young veteran has accumulated a total of 17 goals this season, 4 ahead of second-place teammate Rizal Ganief. For his excellent performance this past weekend—and throughout the season—Tiernan King will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2009-04-09.
