Illinois man allegedly sets fire to get guests to leave

GENEVA, Ill. (AP) - A 46-year-old man allegedly set his own home on fire in order to get two visitors to leave, police said.

Dean Craig was charged with felony arson after allegedly splashing rubbing alcohol on the floor of the two-storey home in Aurora Township and using a lighter to ignite the fire around 1 a.m. Sunday, the Kane County Sheriff's office said.

When authorities arrived at Craig's home, which is owned by his mother, it was engulfed in flames, police said. Craig and his two guests were not injured.

Craig allegedly had asked two visitors to leave, but when they refused, he threatened to light his house on fire, police said.

Craig was being held Monday at the Kane County Jail on $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 9.

Man with bloodied chain saw let into the U.S

BOSTON (AP) - On April 25, Gregory Despres arrived at the U.S.-Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine, carrying a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles and a chain saw stained with what appeared to be blood. U.S. customs agents confiscated the weapons and fingerprinted Despres. Then they let him into the United States.
The following day, a gruesome scene was discovered in Despres' hometown of Minto, New Brunswick: The decapitated body of a 74-year-old country musician named Frederick Fulton was found on Fulton's kitchen floor.

His head was in a pillowcase under a kitchen table. His common-law wife was discovered stabbed to death in a bedroom.

Despres, 22, immediately became a suspect because of a history of violence between him and his neighbors, and he was arrested April 27 after police in Massachusetts saw him wandering down a highway in a sweat shirt with red and brown stains. He is now in jail in Massachusetts on murder charges, awaiting an extradition hearing next month.

He looks like a nice church going chap doesn't he?

Florida man continues his pizza deliveries after being shot in the leg

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A robbery attempt by a masked man and a gunshot wound to the leg didn't stop a pizza delivery man from making his rounds, pies in hand.

Thomas Stefanelli, 37, said dedication to his job at Hungry Howie's Pizza kept him on the job after a struggle with a robber Saturday night left him bleeding from a bullet wound in his left thigh.

Stefanelli arrived at a home only to realize it was vacant, police said. The masked man approached Stefanelli, pointed a gun and demanded money. Stefanelli said he fought with the man, and two shots were fired. One hit Stefanelli, but he did not immediately notice.

The shooter eventually fled with a second man.

"They figured they were going to make an easy mark by robbing a pizza delivery person," said police spokesman Joe Durkin.

Stefanelli finally noticed his wound. His cellphone wasn't working, so he drove to his next delivery address, dropped off the pie and called his boss to ask him to call the police.

Stefanelli went on to make three more deliveries.

"It bled a little bit, not much," he said.

He was treated at a hospital and released.

No arrests have been made, but police have identified several suspects, Durkin said.
Dedicated employee????

Officer runs over hit-and-run victim

GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) — A police officer responding to an emergency call of a man struck by a car accidentally ran over the victim with his cruiser, authorities said.

Investigators remained uncertain whether the victim was already dead when he was struck a second time by the police car, said Sheriff’s Department Capt. Tony Robinson.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol was investigating.

The 911 call was received early Thursday, police said. After reaching the scene, officer J.C. May was blinded by the high beams of a parked car and struck the victim.

The man was in the road and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not available, Robinson said.

May was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

I would have to say that he is probably more stressed than anything! That has to be a freaky situation to end up in!

Rushing to a call to help someone...then finding out that you drove over him!

40,000 Prostitutes Expected for World Cup

Your world cup 2006 bizarre news of the day! :D
40,000 Prostitutes Expected for World Cup

Soccer fans will be getting a full dose of their favorite sport at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. And thousands of women are looking to it as a chance to capitalize on another sport. Around 40,000 prostitutes are expected to offer their services to football fans.

Supporters from across the globe will flock to watch their respective teams in action at the World Cup, running from June 9 to July 9, offering a bigger market for prostitutes to exploit.

"It goes without saying that the World Cup is a great opportunity to make money", said Katharina Cetin, an official at the Hydra prostitute advice centre in Berlin.

Cologne and Dortmund, two of the host cities for the World Cup, have even erected a number of wooden 'sex huts' for the fooball showpiece with condoms and showers at hand.

The idea is to keep the prostitutes and their clients away from public places and Berlin is considering following suit.

"It is better than having the couples in public areas," explained Dirk Lamprecht, a member of the administrative council in Berlin.

Prostitution was legalised in Germany in 2001 but only in certain areas.

Kitten born in Oregon with 2 faces, otherwise healthy; owner names her Gemini

ROSEBURG, Oregon (AP) - A newborn kitten recently entered the world with two faces and, hopefully, at least nine lives.

Gemini was born Sunday with two mouths, two tongues, two noses and four eyes.

"I kind of feel sorry for her, because I can't know for a fact if she's going to live or die," its owner, Lee Bluetear, told the (Roseburg) News-Review. "If she makes it, she should be a perfectly normal and healthy cat. Other than having two faces."

Roseburg veterinarian Alan Ross, who examined the kitten on Tuesday, said he can't estimate the kitten's life span. He said when he first saw the kitten, he wouldn't have given her more than a 10 per cent chance of survival.

"With the three of our veterinarians here, we have a combined total of 50 years of experience," Ross said. "We have never seen anything like this."

Bluetear has been breeding different kinds of animals, starting with dogs, since 1980. Roughly three years ago, she discovered a litter of smaller than normal kittens she calls "miniature cats."

Gemini was born to a miniature mother and a full-size father.

"Everybody is totally amazed that this thing exists," Bluetear said

Watch out for that shot put!

CARSON, Calif. -- A man was struck in the head by a shot put on Wednesday during warmups for the U.S. track and field championships and later died.

The Los Angeles Times reported on its Web site that 77-year-old Paul Suzuki of West Los Angeles, who had officiated at local track and field meets for decades, died at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. No official confirmation was available.

The man was rushed to a hospital, and his condition was not immediately known, according to . It was not immediately clear whether the man was a meet official, Geer said.

The injury occurred about 4:15 p.m. at the Home Depot Center, where the championships will be held Thursday through Sunday.

An Associated Press photographer at the track said the man collapsed about 20 feet from the shot put ring. Jill Geer, director of communications for USA Track and Field, said a doctor was on site and immediately began treatment. Athletic trainers also ran to the man's aid. Emergency medical technicians arrived within about five minutes and took the injured man away.

Carson firefighter Robert Bruce told the Times the man "was in dire straits when we showed up. It was obvious that he had a severe injury to his head".

Bruce said the man stopped breathing en route to the hospital.
