CLEVELAND (AP) - Jeff Garcia will meet Friday with the Cleveland Browns, who are exploring other options at quarterback in case they can't work out a new contract with Tim Couch.
Garcia, a three-time Pro Bowler, was released earlier this week by San Francisco to clear room under the salary cap. He played five seasons for the 49ers after starring in the CFL with Calgary.
Browns spokesman Todd Stewart said Garcia is scheduled to visit the team's training facility on Friday for an interview.
The Browns have also sent a new contract proposal to Couch's agent, Tom Condon, who has not yet got back to the team. Couch is due to make $7.6 million US in 2004 and $8 million in 2005 and the Browns are asking him to rework his deal so they'll have more money to spend in free agency and for the future.
Earlier this week, Couch said he would be willing to take a pay cut - to a point - and as long as he had assurances the money would be used to strengthen the team.
In addition to bringing in Garcia, the Browns worked out Drew Henson for an hour Wednesday. The former Michigan quarterback, who hasn't played football in three years while pursuing a baseball career, is currently the property of Houston.
The Texans are trying to work out a trade before the April 24 draft for the 24-year-old Henson, and are believed to be asking for at least a second-round pick. If a deal can't be reached, Henson will go back in the draft.
Henson has already worked out for the Dallas Cowboys and met with the St. Louis Rams.
