weird.......

Shame the reporter covering the match couldn't have asked the 45,000 assembled Libyans what their first scorer's name was.

Any game Stalteri scores in can't be all that competitive. Still, winning in Ghadafi's garden and after conceding two pennoes must be encourageing for the 'interesting' kraut in charge of Canadian football.

J. Jordan going to land of Krauts

Osieck Includes Whitecap/VMSLer Jason Jordan to Roster in Friendly versus Germany .
Canada to play Germany on June 1st in Wolfsburg, Germany. CSA Press Release (Thursday, May 22, 2003)

Ottawa, ON - Canadian Men's World Cup Team Head Coach Holger Osieck today announced his roster for the upcoming international friendly against Germany on June 1 in Wolfsburg , Germany . The game will be televised on Rogers Sportsnet at 7:00 p.m. across the network.

Jason Jordan and Nikola (Niki) Budalic have earned their first call-up to the senior team for the game. Jordan has played for Canada at the Olympic and Youth team level. He was a member of the 1997 team which competed at the FIFA World Youth Championship. Jordan is in his sixth season with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Budalic plays with Orebro in the Swedish Premier league and is a former member of the Toronto Lynx.

Nick Dasovic returns to the World Cup team for the time since playing in the Bronze Medal game at the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Dasovic is in his second season with the Whitecaps and his first as a player/assistant coach.

Halifax native Ante Jazic will make his first appearance since a friendly against Guatemala on May 29, 1999 . Jazic is finishing his third season with Rapid Vienna following a two-year sting with Hajduk Split.

The Montreal Impact are also represented by two players in Martin Nash and Nevio Pizzolitto. Pizzolitto is making his first appearance with the World Cup team since a friendly against Bermuda on January 11, 2000 .

Defender Tony Menezes has returned to Brazil following a few games in the Chinese Premier League. He will return to Brazil following the Germany game and will then decide whether to return to China or play in Europe .

The goalkeepers are the same as the friendly against Estonia . Pat Onstad, who has played in all of the league leading San Jose Earthquakes games, returns along with Kenny Stamatopoulos.

The team will assemble in Barsinghausen, Germany on May 26.

That's great for Jason but the trend to select players from the A-League is bothersome. I thought Osieck said that he wasn't going to include players from the MLS because it wasn't a good enough league?

Soccer Prodigy Signs Nike Deal

Any under-17 Canadian players inking deals like this?

WASHINGTON - Thirteen-year-old soccer prodigy Freddy Adu agreed to a $1 million contract with Nike, The Washington Post reported Monday.

Adu, already an offensive star on the U.S. under-17 national team, also has agreed to be represented by SportsNet, LLC.

Arnold Tarzay, a lawyer and family adviser, did not confirm the amount of the deal to the Post, which cited sources for the worth of the multiyear contract. The paper said Adu is not likely to sign a pro contract for at least a year.

Nike spokeswoman Celeste Alleyne did not comment to The Associated Press. A call to a representative of the U.S. under-17 team was not immediately returned.

The agreement comes less than a week after Nike signed high school phenom LeBron James, the expected No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, to an endorsement contract worth more than $90 million.

Adu would become ineligible for NCAA (news - web sites) soccer with this deal, but he does not plan to play in college.

A native of Ghana, Adu came to the United States when he was 8 and has been training with the national team in Bradenton, Fla. He became a citizen in February.

Adu played for the under-17 team that lost to Mexico 2-1 in Lancaster, Calif., on Sunday.

I've read a bit on this kid- apparently he's a freak. I think he played an exhibition against DC United (or one of the MLS teams), and schooled a lot of those guys. Basically, the kid has all the tools, and the toolbox.

When you have that kind of talent, and you're handed $1m at thirteen, who needs the NCAA? A smart parent would put a lot of that money in trust anyhow (apparently what him Mum plans to do) and earmark it for education. This way, he's free to pursue the absolute best training Europe can offer.

He'll be over there within two years. What will really be interesting is to see who he signs with.
