The defenceman will have back surgery immediately which, in a statement, GM Mike Gillis said is “the best long term decision for Alex and our hockey club.”
The microdiscectomy back surgery is minimally invasive but will sideline Edler indefinitiely. Making the move to have the surgery now would appear to be a decision made in hopes Edler will be back in time for the playoffs.
The Canucks will not know how much time Edler will miss until the sugery.
“After consultation with our physicians it was decided that surgery was the best course of action,” Gillis said in a statement.

At least now we now where the cap room will come from once Salo comes back.

No need to panic.

Rome and Alberts have been very solid this year, and this Chris Tanev has been excellent imho. Bieksa, Hamhuis, Ehrhoff, and Ballard is still as good a top 4 as anyone else really... Sure Losing Edler hurts, but it sures makes bringing Sami back into the fold $$$-wise very easy.
