Canada beat Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 today in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF U17 tournament in Jamaica to qualify for the U17 World Cup for the first time in 16 years.

The semifinalist qualify directly to the U17 World Cup in Mexico. The US and Panama have also qualified.

There are a few Whitecaps Residency players on the team including BC's Daniel Stanese from Coquitlam Metro-Ford. Daniel assisted on the winning goal!

Congrats to Daniel and Canada on the feat!

On a personal note, I'm very proud of Daniel, as are the rest of his CMF Ajax and CMF clubmates. Daniel is an original CMF Initiation Academy and CMF Ajax player that Peter Price and I coached starting back when he was 4 or 5. He was special then and now he's see some huge success. Just awesome!

Well Done!... too bad the success doesn't always (or ever) translate to the full MNT.

Hopefully the 2 now (3 after next year) Canadian MLS teams and a CSA reformation will allow this group to continue to develop and bloom, and take a country of our population and resources to start showing better on the world stage.

Canada Advances to U17 Soccer Final

Canada has reached the 2011 CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship final after a 1-0 victory over Panama. The young Canucks will face USA this Sunday in the championship final in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Panama, USA, Canada and Jamaica all qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup earlier in the week, but only two teams now remain in the hunt for a confederation title. The Canada-USA final will kick off at 19.00 local (19.00 ET / 16.00 PT) this Sunday night. The final will be preceded by a match for third place between Panama and Jamaica. Both matches will be broadcast live on CONCACAF.com.

In the semi-final stage, Canada won 1-0 over Panama, with central defender Luca Gasparotto scoring the lone goal in the eighth minute. Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau posted his fourth consecutive clean sheet. In the other semi-final match, USA won 2:0 over host Jamaica.

The 2011 CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship runs 14-27 February in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Canada has posted three wins and one draw thus far, with a combined 11 goals scored and no goals conceded in four matches.

3-0 US.

I thought our BC boy did very well all tournament long as did the other Whitecap Residency boys.

The difference between us and the US at that age is that they have 72 academies and we now have 3 at this age. They were not technically better, just way more depth.

Oh well, off to the World Cup in June (in Mexico)! :)
