Tourney starts in 6 days!

Will this be a positive event or one where the actual sport takes a backseat to constant grievances of inequality, sexism, wokeism, and general thuggery? The TSN panel and twatter I'm sure will keep it lively :)

Canada had a friendly this morning vs England ending nil nil. Not a bad result vs one of the tourney favourites for our ladies (am I allowed to call them that? Seriously, no idea if offensive now and should use something else)

The level of play is horrendous. Sinclair is rocketing 5-10 yard passes like they are grenades. Not sure how these girls play everyday but have the touch of a fire hydrant.

Horrible to watch.

But how did whomever it was that took the red card not break her ankle?
I could barely watch the replays

on the one hand, parity is good for developing interest in the woman's game...

on the other, the shocking level of play is not. any u16 or u17 BCSPL boys squad is at a significantly higher level than this.

don't know if it's hubris or ignorance but demanding equal pay to that of the men... sheesh.

Totally agree. The women's game is nowhere near the caliber or expectation of the men's game. For obvious reasons...as per why they should not be compensated the same...

I think parity in pay is a fair issue for women to argue especially as they have put Canada on the map as far as soccer goes internationally. I get that it's 'take the piss' but the men's team has been only in the World Cup in recent decades in '86 and the last one.

I watched only part of the game but Sinclair taking that penalty was pathetic. Was there no one else who had the confidence or confidence to better that!!!??

The constant passing to unsupported players was surprising as that is a basic tenet of the freaking game. Where's the preparation and coaching?

Argentina - Italy - didn't see more than the start but some brutal viciousness there. Makes senior amateur men's games look like pussies.

they put Canada on the map when there were about 8 legitimate teams... now there are what... 12? 16 if you squint hard? sorry, but I'm not giving them much credit and certainly not convinced on pay parity based on something that was marginally more competitive than womens' hockey...

I'm not sure why you seem to have it out for more parity between the national teams. They have to commit and train just like the men.
I've friends with girls in soccer and all believe the success of the women's team has motivated their kids.
Women's games have attracted crowds.

I'm at a loss to understand how you can quibble with the women's team in putting Canada on the international map for soccer irrespective of how many good teams there were over the years.

well, when there are eight teams everyone makes the World Cup... when there are 200 teams, not so much... which is more impressive - 5th out of 10 or 80th out of 200? Since we're talking "parity"...

the men bring in significantly more money than the women. to me, parity would be them getting the same percentage of the revenues they bring in as the women do. but of course that's not what the women want. they want a more "equitable" set-up - the same final amount as the men.

i wish an enterprising journalist would come right out and ask the men if they were prepared to have their share reduced so that the women's share could be increased. there's a finite pot, so that's what would have to happen. the men love to talk in platitudes about how progressive they are, but they seem every bit as money hungry as the women and i highly doubt their answer would be "sure, no problem".

look, if we're going to have the men subsidize the women as a public policy decision, fair enough. we should be transparent enough about that to come out and say it, and then deal with the blowback from the men's side. I think the "same percentage" approach is by far the fairest, but what do I know...

In other news...

Canada 2
Ireland 1

Canada was dog shite in first half. Credit to Priestman (sp?) on the adjustments made as looked like a totally different squad in the second half. Like U10 to U16 difference.

What I mean is, got the win with a drastically better second half performance that still was painful to watch unless your expectations are lowered vastly.

Next up the Matildas who will never top the 1999 squad... if you know, you know.
