1) The objective of the rankings is to provide a quick comparison of the relatively strength of teams. In summary, the team with the higher ranking can be considered the best or stronger team.
For example, it can help to compare teams during CUP competitions or when they have not played for a while.
2) The rankings get more precise as more games takes place, specially among different divisions and sections (i.e. cup games are helpful).
3) Point differential between two teams can approximately give you the likely outcome of a series of hypothetical games:
