PREMIER DIVISION – WEEK 15

A total of 9 Premier Division matches were played this past week—3 make-up games and 6 Day 15 games. As a result of their mid-week loss to Surrey United, the previously undefeated West Van FC dropped out of first place while the reigning Provincial Cup champions—ICST Pegasus—became the new leaders. It should be noted, however, that the former Trollers have a game in hand and could easily reclaim possession of first place with a victory over the Richmond FC Hibernians. At the bottom of the table, Norvan Pacific and Westside FC remained in the dreaded relegation zone, while ICSF Inter slipped further down the ladder.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - WESTSIDE FC 2-0: On Tuesday evening, at Hugh Boyd School in Richmond, a rather premature ‘relegation-avoidance’ match took place between two of the bottom feeders in the VMSL Premier Division: the hosting Richmond Hibernians and the visiting Westside FC. The match—a Day 13 make-up game—was a hard-fought affair with neither team being able to establish any dominance. The Hibernians almost took the lead right from the opening kick-off when midfielder Matt Rota sent striker Brad Caldwell on a breakaway with a clever pass. However, Westside’s goalkeeper—Rowan Anders—faced the challenge brilliantly and pulled off a great save. Midway through the first half, Richmond FC took the lead when midfielder Peter Chivers took advantage of a poor clearance and instinctively blasted the ball into the bottom corner of the Westside net from well outside the penalty area. The Westsiders bounced back and almost knotted the score a few minutes later, but Peter Bow inexplicably missed the net from close range. Near the end of the first half, the Hibernians came close to doubling their lead when yet another fine cross by Matt Rota found an unmarked Alan Chivers at the far post. Unfortunately for Chivers, and the rest of the Richmond clan, his shot sailed well over the crossbar and out of danger. Very early in the second half, the Hibernians once again came close to scoring their second goal when Geoff Salt picked up a loose ball well outside the penalty area, but watched agonizingly as his dipping volley narrowly missed the far post. Once again, Westside FC bounced back and nearly tied things up shortly thereafter when Gavin Barrett’s wicked strike bounced off the post. As luck would have it, Richmond FC counter-attacked immediately thereafter as Brad Caldwell sent newly-signed Chase Wickham in on goal with a clever pass. Wickham, after rounding a Richmond defender, proceeded to slip the ball into the back of the net for the insurance marker. Richmond goalkeeper Luke O’Shea turned in a very solid and composed performance and fully deserved the shutout, while central defenders Stu Walters and Mike Revell—as well as midfielders Geoff Salt and Peter Chivers—also performed admirably in a winning cause. Despite the loss, Westside midfielders Val Mas and David Andreychuk played remarkably well, while defender Hee Young Chung was rock-solid throughout the contest.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - WEST VAN FC 2-1: On Wednesday evening, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, two of the top teams in the Premier Division—the hosting Surrey United Firefighters and the visiting West Van FC—faced off with the all-important 3 points on the line. At the end of the day, the home team walked away with a hard-earned victory, a result that improves Surrey United’s chances of winning the coveted Premier Division title. The Firefighters almost took the lead early in the match when Angus Burke’s long-range shot curled just wide of the upright. Late in the first half, however, West Van FC took the lead when Jesse Fetterley took advantage of a poor back-pass by Surrey’s Nick Perugini and easily scored the opening goal past a bewildered Paul Shepherd, the Firefighters’ goalkeeper. Surrey United battled back tenaciously and knotted the score just before the halftime whistle when a well-taken free-kick by Steve Kindel found former Whitecap teammate Jeff Clarke at the far post. The former Whitecaps’ captain then proceeded to hammer the ball into the back of the net for the all-important equalizer. The game continued to be a back and forth affair during the second frame, but it was Surrey United that managed to score the vital winning goal at the 61st minute mark with Steve Kindel once again involved in the play. On this occasion, Kindel’s corner-kick was deposited into the net by Vince Stewart from close range. At this juncture, the former Trollers threw caution to the wind and attacked relentlessly for the remainder of the game. However, goalscoring chances by Jesse Fetterley, Ryan Glanville, Justin Wallace, and Paul Dailly all went awry and, in the end, the Firemen walked away with the victory. Needless to say, defender Steve Kindel and midfielder Jeff Clarke played extremely well in a winning cause for Surrey United, while league-leading goalscorer Angus Burke was a constant threat to the West Van backline. For West Van FC, forward Jesse Fetterley, veteran midfielder Paul Dailly, defender Tim Perry, and goalkeeper Hide` Ozawa also performed admirably throughout the entire match.

ICST PEGASUS – ROVERS UNITED 2-0: Also on Wednesday evening, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, another make-up game took place, this one between the hosting Rovers United and ICST Pegasus. The defending Provincial Cup champions—ICST Pegasus—got off to a shaky start, giving the ball away in dangerous areas on a few occasions. Fortunately for the Pegasus lads, goalkeeper Amar Dhinsa rose to the occasion with a couple of excellent saves—on shots Andrew Celenza and Desmond Tachie. However, as the game progressed, the visitors found their rhythm and took control of the match. In fact, the final score could have been more emphatic had it not been for some outstanding goalkeeping on the part of the Rovers’ Garth Lagasse, as well as some poor finishing by the Pegasus forwards. Pegasus took the lead at the 30th minute mark when forward Jag Gill raced in on goal on a partial breakaway and unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area. Unfortunately for Gill, the ball bounced off the goalpost but, fortunately for ICST Pegasus, Azad Palani picked up the rebound and easily tapped the ball into the back of the Rovers’ net for what proved to be the winning goal. ICST Pegasus could easily have increased its lead during the remainder of the first half, but midfielder Chetan Jhooty narrowly missed the target on two separate occasions. In the second half, ICST Pegasus kept pressing and, once again, squandered numerous opportunities to put the game out of the Rovers’ reach, on shots by Azad Palani, Reynold Stewart, Jag Gill, Niko Marcina, and Andrew Reed. Finally, at about the 75th minute mark, forward Reynold Stewart was sent in on goal on a breakaway by a superlative pass on the part of Diaz Kambere. Stewart made no mistake in finishing off the play with a left-footed half-volley, a shot that gave Garth Lagasse no chance whatsoever. Shortly thereafter, the Rovers came close to narrowing the margin, but Jason Pierotti’s close-range shot sailed over the crossbar. Pegasus’ forward Jag Gill deserves special mention for his indomitable performance as he worked tirelessly for the entire 90 minutes. Defenders Paul Bahia and Diaz Kambere also performed very well, as did goalkeeper Amar Dhinsa as he earned the clean-sheet. For the Rovers, midfielders Jeff Rogers and Bobby Jhutty worked hard during the whole game, while—as mentioned earlier—goalkeeper Garth Lagasse came up with a few outstanding saves and managed to keep the score respectable. ICST Pegasus’ unbeaten streak thus increases to 10 games as the Provincial Cup champions have compiled 7 victories and 3 draws since returning from the Canadian Nationals in Montreal.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - ICST PEGASUS 0-0: On Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, two of the top teams in the VMSL’s Premier Division faced off in search of the all important 3 points. However, the reigning VMSL Premier Division champions—Surrey United Firefighters—and the defending BC Provincial Cup champions—ICST Pegasus—had to settle for a scoreless draw, a result that must be disappointing to both teams. The ‘Surrey Derby’ was a very hard-fought affair as both teams tried desperately to lay claim to all 3 points. At the end of the day, however, the tie was probably a fair result. Early in the game, ICST Pegasus had an excellent scoring chance when Chetan Jhooty’s cross was headed towards the Surrey United net by Azad Palani. However, goalkeeper Paul Shepherd came up with an outstanding save—the first of several during the rest of the match. Much to Pegasus’ chagrin, Omari Aldridge picked up the rebound but misfired his subsequent shot from very close range. Shortly thereafter, it was the Firefighters’ turn to almost take the lead when Liam Millar unleashed a powerful drive from the edge of the penalty area, only to have the crossbar get in the way! The rest of the first half consisted of some exciting end-to-end action, but some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Pegasus’ Amar Dhinsa and Surrey United’s Paul Shepherd kept the game scoreless till the halftime whistle. Early in the second half, a great cross from former Whitecap Steve Kindel found a wide open Sean Einarsson, whose diving header was brilliantly saved by Amar Dhinsa. Midway through the second half, Surrey United missed the best opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty kick for a hand-ball infraction by Paul Bahia—off a Steve Kindel corner-kick. Playing-coach Niall Thompson stepped up to the plate and took the initial penalty kick, a shot that was saved by Amar Dhinsa. However, the referee called a re-take of the spot shot since Dhinsa had moved off the goal-line before it was taken. Surrey’s Vince Stewart took the subsequent re-take and sailed his shot over the net. Immediately after that, it was Pegasus’ turn to miss a golden opportunity as Reynold Stewart—after having demonstrated some excellent skills—cut the ball back onto the path of Adam Costley, whose point-blank shot was miraculously saved by Paul Shepherd. Defender, Diaz Kambere, midfielder Adam Costley, and goalkeeper Amar Dhinsa played extremely well for ICST Pegasus during the entire match, while Surrey United’s defender Steve Kindel and goalkeeper Paul Shepherd deserve special mention for their superlative performances. Despite the disappointing tie, ICST Pegasus climbs to sole possession of first place, with a 9-5-1 record, while Surrey United is now in 4th place, with 26 points out of 15 games.

ICSF INTER - WESTSIDE FC 0-0: Also on Saturday, at Adanac Park in Vancouver, two struggling teams in desperate need of points—ICSF Inter and Westside FC—met and, after a rather poorly played 90 minutes, had to settle for a 0-0 tie. Needless to say, the last place Westsiders needed the points the most as they are mired in last place in the Premier Division standings. Westside FC got off to a promising start and nearly took the lead in the early stages of the match when Gavin Barrett—after beating a couple of ICSF defenders—sailed a sharp-angled shot over the crossbar. Shortly thereafter, ICSF Inter responded in kind as Pavi Dhillon missed a golden opportunity to give his team the lead, but missed the net from close range. The remainder of the first half consisted of a series of half chances, midfield battles, and yellow cards being issued by the referee for a variety of reasons. Early in the second half, ICSF Inter seemed to take control of the match and created a few goalscoring opportunities, chances that all went awry. On one occasion, Phil Lensky raced in on goal
on a breakaway, but barely missed the net with his close-range shot. Shortly thereafter, it was Joseph Marrello’s turn to miss a golden opportunity as he slumbled before taking a shot. However, Inter’s pressure ceased midway through the second half when young midfielder Luigi Pantusa was sent off for having received his second caution of the contest. Westside FC took advantage of the situation and pressed hard in search of what would have been the game winner. However, Brian Reems was unable to convert a couple of excellent opportunities as he sent his header just over the crossbar and, soon thereafter, fired a far-post shot wide of the target. A few minutes later, Westside FC was also reduced to 10 men when Wyatt Seddon-Johnston was sent off for also having accumulated 2 yellow cards. The rest of the game was scrappy and uneventful and, at the end of the day, a 0-0 final result seemed to be a fair one. Defensively, Steve Johnson and Eland Bronstein played extremely well for Westside FC, helping goalkeeper Rowan Anders earn the clean-sheet. Midfielder Nick Graham also performed admirably for the Westsiders as he worked tirelessly throughout the entire match. For the ‘Italians’ the defensive trio of Sheldon Maistry, Jesse Dhami, and Matt Judd performed very well in aiding and abetting goalkeeper Dennis Kindel as he recorded the shutout. The tie helps neither team as Westside FC remains in last place—with a 2-3-10 record—while ICSF Inter drops to 10th place, with only 14 points from 15 games.

COLUMBUS FC - NORVAN PACIFIC 5-1: On Saturday, at Confederation Park in North Vancouver, Columbus FC trounced the hosting Norvan Pacific by an emphatic 5-1 margin, thus remaining in sole possession of third place. Despite the fact that the ‘Italians’ dominated the match for virtually the entire 90 minutes, it was Norvan Pacific that opened the scoring early in the match when Dave O’Connor’s free kick was redirected towards the Columbus net by Terry Davies. After the initial shot was blocked, Davies picked up his own rebound and slotted the ball home for the go-ahead goal. Columbus bounced back tenaciously and came close to knotting the score on several occasions, but some outstanding goalkeeping on the part of Norvan’s Giancarlo Martino kept his team in the lead till midway through the first half. At this point, Columbus FC finally scored the equalizer as Steve DeBlasio took advantage of a rare miscue by Greg Muir, beat a couple of Norvan defenders before unleashing a wicked—and unstoppable—shot from the edge of the penalty area into the back of the net. Early in the second half Columbus’ midfielder Justin Carvery set up defender Stefano Pannu with a clever through ball. The streaking Pannu made no mistake in finishing off the play with a brilliant shot to the far post. A few minutes later, Columbus FC was awarded a penalty kick for a hand-ball infraction on the part of Tony Paiero, a spot shot that was clinically converted by Steve DeBlasio. To their credit the Norvan players did not give up and tried desperately to get back into the game and had a couple of good chances to score but efforts by Matt Hartwell and Greg Muir were saved by goalkeeper Giordano DiPalma. However, Norvan’s pressure seemed to open the flood gates as Columbus FC counter-attacked lethally. In fact, late in the game, Columbus put the game out of Norvan’s reach with goals by Nisbert Sonson and Jamie Olson. Columbus’ forward Steve DeBlasio was a going concern throughout the match, as he drove the Norvan backline to distraction with his skill and pace. Midfielders Justin Carvery and Jamie Olson also played exceptionally well for Columbus FC, while defenders Stefano Pannu, Graham Smith, Nathan Quan, and Blair Robertson were rock-solid during the entire 90 minutes of play. Columbus FC thus improves its record to 9-2-4, while Norvan Pacific remains in penultimate place, with only 11 points out of 15 games.

WEST VAN FC - ROVERS UNITED 2-1: Also on Saturday, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, West Van FC returned to its winning ways by defeating the hosting Rovers United by a narrow 2-1 margin. The visiting West Van team totally controlled the tempo of the match during the entire first half and took a well-deserved 2-0 into the dressing room. In fact, the halftime score could have been much more emphatic had it not been for the fact that several West Van chances went awry. In particular, opportunities by Ryan Glanville, Justin Wallace, Jesse Fetterley, and Paul Dailly barely missed the Rovers net. The former Trollers finally took the lead at the 30th minute mark when Jesse Fetterley headed home a patented Paul Dailly corner kick from the edge of the goal area. Ten minutes later, Fetterley was at it again as he chipped the ball over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Garth Lagasse, after having received a perfect pass from midfielder Brett Nordin. The second half was more evenly played as the Rovers tried desperately to get back into the game. At the 60th minute mark, the Rovers narrowed the margin when a long range shot by Rizal Ganief was inadvertently deflected into the West Van net by Leo Nash, past a bewildered goalkeeper, Marco Durante. At the other end of the pitch, Justin Wallace and Ryan Glanville came close to re-establishing West Van’s 2 goal lead but their shots were cleared off the line—in rapid succession—by defender Colin Phillips. However, the Rovers refused to give up and, just before the full time whistle, almost tied things up when Bobby Jhutty’s low corner kick found its way through the West Van goal area onto the path of Derrick Bassi, whose subsequent shot barely missed the net. West Van’s forwards—Ryan Glanville, Justin Wallace, and in particular Jesse Fetterley—were dangerous threats all game long, while midfielder Mike Winter worked tirelessly throughout the match. West Van’s defensive backline—composed of Max Baessato, Leo Nash, Tim Perry, and Drew Gelley—limited the strong and fast Rovers attackers to only a few chances. For Rovers United, defenders Jeff Rogers, Derrick Bassi, Mike Buikema, and Colin Phillips played quite well despite the loss. West Van FC now finds itself in second place, one point behind ICST Pegasus, albeit with a game in hand. On the other hand, Rovers United slip to 9th place, with a 4-3-8 record.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - CROATIA SC 2-0: On Sunday, at Adanac Park in Vancouver, the red-hot Richmond Hibernians climbed into 8th place as a result of their 2-0 victory over the struggling Croatia SC. The Croatians got off to a bright start and controlled most of the action in the first part of the opening period and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Their best chance came at the 20th minute mark when a Johnny Sulentic corner kick was one-timed towards the Richmond net by Dan Rogic, only to have goalkeeper Luke O’Shea come up with a brilliant save. A few minutes later, the Hibernians also came close to opening the scoring when midfielder Geoff Salt fired a fantastic full-volley just over the Croatian crossbar. Very early in the second half, a brilliant cross by Richmond’s Alan Chivers found striker Wes Barrett at the far post, but his subsequent shot was saved by veteran goalkeeper Didar Sandhu. Soon thereafter—at the 55th minute mark—Richmond FC finally took the lead when Alan Chivers and Wes Barrett once again combined, this time successfully. In fact, an excellent pass by Chivers landed at the feet of an unmarked Barrett who proceeded to step around a Croatia defender before calmly slotting the ball into to bottom corner of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. The Croatians fought back tenaciously and came very close to knotting the score a few minutes later when Ivan Prpic raced in on goal on a partial breakaway, only to have Luke O’Shea pull off yet another sensational save. At about the 70th minute mark, O’Shea denied Johnny Sulentic as the former professional blasted a blistering shot towards the Richmond net, a shot that seemed destined for the back of the net. Immediately thereafter, the Hibernians sealed the victory when Chase Wickham finished off yet another excellent cross by Alan Chivers with a rather easy tap-in. Very late in the match, Croatia SC almost narrowed the margin when Ivan Prpic received a through ball from Tomislav Tomic, raced in on goal on a breakaway, rounded the goalkeeper but watched agonizingly as his powerful shot rang off the goalpost and out of harm’s way. Richmond’s midfielders Geoff Salt and Alan Chivers controlled the tempo of the match with poise and finesse, while defenders Stu Walters, Rory Gattens, Marcus Brougham, and Connor Radil were rock-solid during the entire contest. Needless to say, goalkeeper Luke O’Shea fully earned his clean-sheet with a superlative performance. For Croatia SC, midfielders Goran Vitic, Matteo Agnoloni, and Dan Rogic worked tirelessly throughout the match, albeit in a losing cause. The Hibernians thus improve their record to 4-5-5, good for 8th place in the standings, while Croatia SC remains in 7th place with 18 points from 15 games.

DELTA UNITED HURRICANES - COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES 2-0: Also on Sunday, at John Oliver Park in Delta, the Delta Hurricanes ended the Metro-Ford Wolves’ winning streak by defeating the visitors by a well-earned 2-0 margin. The young Wolves controlled most of the action during the opening 20 minutes, exhibiting some excellent ball control but failing to penetrate through the very tight Delta United defense. About half way through the first half, the Hurricanes seemed to gain their composure and also started to control the ball with skill and poise. In fact, Delta United produced the best goalscoring chances during the latter part of the first half. At about the 30th minute mark, Gary Badesha’s well-placed corner kick was headed towards the Metro-Ford goal by Ryan Dhillon, only to have the strategically placed goalkeeper—Mat Bird—pull off a fine save. Ten minutes later, Delta United once again came close to scoring but Ryan Dhillon’s one-time shot—after having been set up by Cam Hundal—barely missed the target. In the second half, the Hurricanes took over the tempo of the match and fully deserved to score what proved to be the winning goal at the 53rd minute mark when Ryan Dhillon beat a couple of Metro-Ford defenders before setting up Joti Thind, who quickly distributed the ball to a wide-open Harp Khakh who made no mistake in finishing the play from close range. Midway through the second half, Metro-Ford came close to tying things up when a Carlo Basso flick-on found a wide open Brayden Gant inside the penalty area. Unfortunately for Gant, and the rest of the Wolves, his subsequent close-range shot rang off the goalpost and out of danger. At the 85th minute mark, Delta United sealed the victory when Cam Hundal dribbled by a couple of Metro-Ford defenders and found a wide-open Harp Khakh who, once again, brilliantly slotted the ball into the back of the net. Defenders Joey Brar and Jason Gill were towers of strength in the Delta United backline, making life rather easy for goalkeeper Drew Smiley as he recorded the clean-sheet. Midfielders Cam Hundal, Harp Khakh, Ryan Dhillon, and Harry Lakhan also played very well for the Hurricanes as they controlled the middle of the park for most of the contest. The well-deserved victory draws the Hurricanes one point closer to the Wolves in the Premier Division standings with a record of 6-4-5. Metro-Ford, on the other hand, drops to 5th place with 23 points out of 15 games.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS for their excellent performance in defeating the league-leading West Van FC by a narrow, and hard-fought 2-1 margin. Led by the outstanding efforts of forward Angus Burke and former Whitecaps Steve Kindel and Jeff Clarke the Firefighters battled hard all game long and, finally, came away with the hard-earned and all-important victory. During the week, the Firefighters were also able to hold the powerful BC Provincial Cup champions--ICST Pegasus--to a scoreless draw.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: West Van FC’s forward JESSE FETTERLEY for his 3-goal performance this past week. Fetterley scored his team’s lone goal in a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to arch-rivals Surrey United and then scored both his team’s goals in their 2-1 victory over Rovers United. All three goals were things of beauty! For his outstanding performances this past week, JESSE FETTERLEY will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2012-01-18.

PREMIER DIVISION – WEEK 16

The first match day after the Christmas break resulted in numerous lop-sided games and—with one exception—the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. The only exception occurred on Sunday—at Vancouver Technical School—as the visiting Surrey United Firefighters defeated the hosting Columbus FC by a decisive 3-0 margin and thus climbed into a 3rd place tie with the ‘Italians’. The rest of the standings remained more or less the same, with Westside FC and Norvan Pacific still mired in the relegation zone, while ICST Pegasus and West Van FC continued their season-long battle for first place. It should be noted that the afore-mentioned two top teams will face off on Friday evening at Newton Athletic Park with first place on the line.

COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES - NORVAN PACIFIC 3-0: On Friday evening, at Coquitlam Town Centre, the young Metro-Ford Wolves defeated the visiting Norvan Pacific by a rather elaborate 3-0 margin, a result which leaves the North Shore team in penultimate place in the standings. The visitors defended well during most of the first half and counter-attacked dangerously on a few occasions. However, the Metro-Ford backline—composed of Connor Ayre, Anthony DiNicolo, Kyle Jones, and Carson Gill—was rock solid and allowed Norvan Pacific very few goalscoring chances. Just before the halftime whistle, the Wolves were rewarded for their persistent attacking when veteran Andrew Veer sent Jovan Blagojevic down the left flank with a picture-perfect pass. Blagojevic controlled the ball impeccably, blew by a Norvan defender and unleashed a great shot to the far post, a shot that gave newly-signed goalkeeper Richard Goddard no chance whatsoever. The second half was more or less a replica of the first as the Wolves controlled most of the play and Norvan relied on solid defending and the occasional counter-attack. At about the 60th minute mark, Metro-Ford scored the insurance marker when Brayden Gant intercepted an errant Norvan pass in the middle of the park and proceeded to send an overlapping Carson Gill down the left flank. Gill’s subsequent perfect cross was then headed home brilliantly by Carlo Basso, as he rose above all the Norvan defenders. To their credit, the visitors refused to give up and came close to narrowing the margin on a couple of occasions, but an excellent shot by Sean Regan was well-saved by goalkeeper Mat Bird, while Tony Paiero’s shot narrowly missed the net. Late in the match, Metro-Ford’s Dom Delli Santi put the game out of Norvan’s reach on a fine individual effort as he exhibited some excellent skills by beating a few Norvan defenders before depositing the ball into the back of the net. Metro-Ford’s veteran midfielder Andrew Veer demonstrated a great deal of poise and leadership in the middle of the park, while fellow midfielders Brayden Gant and Jules Chopin were going concerns with their high work-rate and technical skills. Forwards Jovan Blagojevic and Carlo Basso also deserve special mention as they were constant thorns on the side of the Norvan defenders. For Norvan Pacific, forwards Matt Hartwell and Jamie Dunnett were dangerous on the counter-attacks, while goalkeeper Richard Goddard performed remarkably well, despite the loss. It should also be mentioned that Metro-Ford’s goalkeeper—Mathew Bird—registered yet another shut-out, his 7th of the season. The victory solidifies the Wolves’ hold on 5th place, with a 8-2-6 record, while Norvan Pacific remains near the bottom of the table, with only 11 points from 16 games.

WEST VAN FC - CROATIA SC 5-0: On Saturday, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, the aspiring West Van FC easily defeated the visiting Croatia SC by a rather embarrassing 5-0 margin. The former Trollers turned in one of their best performances of the season, dominated proceedings from start to finish, created numerous goalscoring chances, and fully deserved the lop-sided margin of victory. The home team opened the scoring at the 20th minute mark when Jesse Fetterley was fouled inside the Croatian penalty area by Matteo Agnoloni after having been sent in on goal by a great through ball from Justin Wallace. On the subsequent penalty kick, Justin Wallace stepped up to the plate and made no mistake in converting the spot shot into the opening goal. The Croatians bounced back and came close to knotting the score soon thereafter when Goran Vitic won the ball in the middle of the park, beat a couple of West Van defenders, and fired a wicked low shot just wide of the net. A few minutes later—at about the 30th minute mark—West Van FC doubled its lead when Ryan Glanville took advantage of a defensive blunder and chipped the ball over Didar Sandhu—the Croatia goalkeeper—from well outside the penalty area. The home team continued to press for the remainder of the first half and could easily have scored a couple of more goals, but efforts by Ryan Glanville, Jesse Fetterley, Bruno Teixiera, and Justin Wallace all went awry. The second half was more or less a carbon copy of the first, as West Van FC continued to dictate the pace of the match. At the 60th minute mark, West Van added its third goal, once again on a penalty kick. On this occasion, Jesse Fetterley was fouled by veteran Darko Jelic inside the 18-year box, resulting in another penalty kick being awarded. Fetterley himself took the penalty shot, only to have Didar Sandhu pull off a great save. Unfortunately for Sandhu—and the rest of the Croatian crew—Fetterley picked up the rebound and slotted the ball home. Ten minutes later—at about the 70th minute—Ryan Glanville received a great pass from Gary Anderson, outmuscled a Croatian defender, and calmly placed the ball into the back of the net from close range. Late in the match, West Van FC added its 5th and final goal when a wicked shot from Austin Lowrie was brilliantly saved by Didar Sandhu. However—after the save—the ball bounced off the crossbar and onto the path of Mike Winter who had no difficulty whatsoever in tapping it into the net from close range. The home team could have a added a few more goals to its already elaborate margin, but efforts by Jesse Fetterley, Justin Wallace, and Gary Anderson barely missed the mark. As the scoreline indicates, the entire West Van FC team played remarkably well but special mention should be made of forwards Ryan Glanville and Jesse Fetterley who drove the Croatian defenders to distraction throughout the match with their indomitable work-rate. Also, midfielders Austin Lowrie, Mike Winter, and Justin Wallace controlled the tempo of the match in the middle of the park, making life difficult for their opponents. Veteran goalkeeper Marco Durante recorded yet another shut-out, probably the easiest of the lengthy career! Despite the embarrassing loss, Croatia’s midfielders Chris Craveiro and Goran Vitic worked very hard throughout the match. The victory improves West Van’s chances of catching league-leading ICST Pegasus as they remain one point behind the defending BC champions, with a game in hand. Croatia SC, on the other hand, slips to 8th place, with a rather disappointing 5-3-8 record.

ICST PEGASUS – ROVERS UNITED 7-1: Also on Saturday, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, ICST Pegasus remained in first place—albeit by the slimmest of margins—by defeating the visiting Rovers United by an almost unprecedented 7-1 margin. Despite the fact that Pegasus dominated proceedings from start to finish, it was the Rovers that almost opened the scoring very early in the match, when Jason Pierotti’s excellent shot barely skimmed the outside of the goalpost. From that moment on the defending BC Provincial Cup champions took over the reins of the match and created numerous goalscoring opportunities. In fact, had it not been for some outstanding goalkeeping on the part of the Rovers’ Garth Legasse, the scoreline would have been even more emphatic. Very early in the game, Legasse pulled off a sensational save, when Omari Aldridge raced in on goal on a breakaway. However, Pegasus’ persistent pressure paid off at the 15th minute mark when midfielder Niko Marcina rocketed home a wicked shot from the top of the 18-yard box after some nice work by fellow midfielder Omari Aldridge. A few minutes later, it was Aldridge’s turn to score what proved to be the winning goal as he collected a loose ball and tapped it into the back of the net from close range. It should be mentioned that the play originated from a great, low cross on the part of defender Andrew Reed. At the 25th minute mark, ICST Pegasus added its third goal on a fantastic individual effort by forward Reynold Stewart as he beat a couple of defenders before slotting the ball home from close range. Then, at the 30th minute mark, Jag Gill converted a fine cross by Reynold Stewart into Pegasus’ fourth goal as he one-timed the ball off the goalpost and into the net from just inside the penalty area. Near the end of the first half, Chetan Jhooty turned a Rovers’ defender inside out several times before tucking the ball into the corner of the net. ICST Pegasus continued its domination during the second half and scored two more goals to add insult to the Rovers’ injury. However, the Rovers also created a couple of goalscoring opportunities and managed to score a couple of goals early in the second half. The first, by Rob Sing, was disallowed because of an offside infraction, while the second—by Rizal Ganief—came after Bobby Jhooty’s shot/cross was deflected into the Pegasus net by Ganief. It should be noted that this was the first goal that ICST Pegasus has conceded during its last 6 games. At about the 70th minute mark, Pegasus restored its 5-goal lead when Jag Gill set up young Javid Khan inside the penalty area. Khan made no mistake and fired a powerful half-volley into the Rovers’ net. Khan’s and Gill’s roles were reversed on the 7th and final goal as Khan became the provider and he set up Gill with a fine pass. Gill had no difficulty in finishing off the play and scored the last goal of the game at around the 80th minute mark. It should also be mentioned that Azad Palani, Omari Aldridge, and Diaz Kambere had excellent scoring chances in the second half but were unable to finish. The entire Pegasus team played extremely well, but forwards Reynold Stewart and Jag Gill—as well as defenders Jag Sajan, Paul Bahia, and Diaz Kambere—deserve special mention for their superlative performances. The victory improves Pegasus’ record to and enviable 10-5-1, while the Rovers remain in 9th place with only 15 points from 16 games.

DELTA UNITED HURRICANES - WESTSIDE FC 3-0: The third Saturday game was played at South Memorial Park in Vancouver and featured the hot-and-cold Delta Hurricanes and the last-place Westside FC. The Westsiders desperately needed all 3 points in order to maintain their hopes of avoiding relegation but, as luck would have it, the Hurricanes were at their best and walked away with a rather easy 3-0 victory. The first half of the match was a hard-fought affair with very few clear-cut goalscoring chances. The first opportunity occurred at the 7th minute mark when Delta’s Sarpreet Pahal beat a Westside defender before passing the ball to newly-signed Josh Northey, whose subsequent shot sailed just wide of the net. Then, at the 30th minute mark, Westside’s Mike Buree whipped a great cross from the right flank, a cross that Valerian Mas barely missed. Just before the halftime whistle, it was the Hurricanes’ turn to miss a golden opportunity as Harp Khakh one-timed a fine cross from Ryan Dhillon just wide of the net. Things opened up considerably in the second half as both teams decided to throw caution to the wind. Finally, at the 60th minute mark, Delta United scored the first goal of the contest when Josh Northey beat a couple of Westside defenders with some excellent footwork and unleashed a thunderous shot that forced goalkeeper Tommy Johnson to make a great save. However, David Chohan picked up the rebound and calmly slotted the ball home for what proved to be the winning goal. The Westsiders fought back tenaciously and almost tied things up at the 70th minute mark when Mike Buree did some great work down the right flank and slid a perfect cross onto the path of Nick Graham, whose subsequent close-range shot was miraculously saved by veteran goalkeeper Drew Smiley. With Westside FC pushing hard for the equalizer, the visitors were able to add a couple of more goals to their margin of victory late in the game. At the 80th minute mark, Ryan Dhillon scored the insurance marker as his long-range shot was inadvertently deflected into the net by a Westside defender. Then, just before the final whistle, Gary Badesha scored the last goal on a well-taken free kick from just outside the penalty area. Delta’s defenders Joey Brar and Jason Gill, midfielder Sarpreet Pahal, and forward Ryan Dhillon played extremely well in a winning cause, while goalkeeper Drew Smiley fully earned his clean-sheet. For Westside FC, forward Mike Buree was a dangerous threat throughout the match, while defenders Eland Bronstein, Ben Elliott, and Hee-Young Chung were rock-solid during the entire match. Midfielder Nick Graham also played very well for Westside FC, despite the loss. As a result of the victory, Delta United remains in 6th place, with a 7-4-5 record, while Westside FC is still in last place, with only 9 points from 16 games.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - ICSF INTER 3-0: The fourth—and final—Saturday match was played at Minoru Oval in Richmond between the red-hot Richmond Hibernians and the struggling ICST Inter. Not surprisingly, the Hibernians lived up to their expectations by easily defeating the visiting ‘Italians’ by a clear-cut 3-0 margin. Inter got off to a rather bright start and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions in the early going. In fact, at about the 10th minute mark, Roman Doutkevitch fired a near range shot towards the Richmond goal, only to have goalkeeper Matt Clayton pull off a brilliant save. Shortly thereafter, Inter’s Stephen Yuan missed another quality opportunity when he raced in on goal but fired his shot just wide of the Richmond net. As luck would have it, it was Richmond FC that took the lead a few minutes later—at about the 18th minute mark—when a well-placed, low cross by forward Brad Caldwell found fellow Darren Prentice at the top of the 6-yard box. Prentice subsequently hammered the ball into the roof of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. However, ICSF Inter bounced back and came very close to knotting the score at the 30th minute mark when newly-signed Roman Doutkevitch sent Stephen Yuan in on goal with a clever pass. Unfortunately for Yuan—and the rest of the Inter clan—goalkeeper Matt Clayton came up with yet another outstanding save. Shortly thereafter—at about the 35th minute mark—the Hibernians scored what proved to be the insurance goal when defender Mike Revell—after a clever give-and-go between Peter Chivers and Brad Caldwell—fired a low, first-time shot into the back of the Inter net. Late in the first half, the Hibs put the game out of Inter’s reach when striker Brad Caldwell received a great pass from Darren Prentice, beat an Inter defender, and hammered a rocket of a shot into the top of the net from the edge of the penalty area. The Richmond Hibernians controlled the play during the majority of the second half and created a few goalscoring opportunities—particularly by midfielder Alex Orasa—that went awry. Needless to say, Richmond forwards Brad Caldwell and Darren Prentice were going concerns throughout the match, while defenders Mike Revell and Stu Walters performed admirably, making it relatively easy for goalkeeper Matt Clayton as he recorded yet another clean-sheet. As a result of the victory, Richmond FC leap-frogs over Croatia SC into 7th place, with an even 5-5-5 record. ICSF Inter, on the other hand, remains in 10th place, with only 14 points from 16 games.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - COLUMBUS FC 3-0: The lone Sunday game was played at Vancouver Technical School between two of the top teams in the VMSL Premier Division: the hosting Columbus FC and the visiting Surrey United. After a rather one-sided 90 minutes of play, the visiting Firemen walked away with a well-earned 3-0 victory over the rather lethargic ‘Italians’. After exerting a lot of early pressure, the Firefighters took the lead at the 20th minute mark when Andrew Proctor laid off a perfect pass to Angus Burke at the edge of the penalty area. Burke—the VMSL’s leading goalscorer—proceeded to take on a Columbus defender and slotted the ball into the Columbus net for what proved to be the winning goal. About 10 minutes later, Surrey United’s Ryan Reynolds was fouled inside the Columbus penalty area by Graham Smith, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded to the visitors. Veteran Jeff Clarke—former Whitecaps’ captain—stepped up to the plate and easily converted the spot shot into the insurance marker. Near the end of the first half, Columbus FC created one of its very few goalscoring chances when Steve DeBlasio’s wicked shot was well-saved by veteran goalkeeper Paul Shepherd. Midway through the second half, the Firefighters put the game out of Columbus’ reach when captain Vinnie Stewart full-volleyed a long clearance by Steve Kindel into the lower part of the Columbus net, giving goalkeeper JD Blakely no chance whatsoever. The entire Surrey United team played extremely well, but special mention should be made of defenders Steve Kindel, Jeff Clarke, and Sean Parkes for their impeccable performances as they made life relatively easy for goalkeeper Paul Shepherd as he recorded yet another clean-sheet. Forwards Andrew Proctor and Angus Burke also played extremely well as they were a thorn on the side of the Columbus defenders during the entire game. In the middle of the park, Colin Streckmann controlled the tempo of the match with grit and poise as he controlled the ball very skillfully and won numerous tackles. The victory elevates the Firefighters to a 3rd place tie with Columbus FC, with both teams having identical 9-2-5 records.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS for their excellent performance in defeating the highly-ranked Columbus FC by a decisive 3-0 margin. Led by the outstanding efforts of midfielder Colin Streckmann, defenders Steve Kindel, Sean Parkes, and Jeff Clarke the Firefighters controlled the game from start to finish and fully deserved the all-important victory.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: West Van FC’s forward RYAN GLANVILLE for his 2-goal performance this past week-end against Croatia SC. Glanville drove his opponents to distraction throughout the contest with his pace and power. Not only did he score 2 excellent goals, but he also created numerous other chances for himself and his teammates. For his outstanding performance this past week, RYAN GLANVILLE will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2012-01-25.

PREMIER DIVISION – WEEK 17

Only one Premier Division game was played this past weekend due to the heavy snowfall that began Friday evening. The match that was played—between ICST Pegasus and West Van FC—ended in a 2-1 victory for the visiting former Trollers, as they once again laid claim to the coveted first place in the standings. All the other 5 games were postponed and will be played at a later date.

WEST VAN FC - ICST PEGASUS 2-1: On Friday evening, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, the visiting West Van FC edged the defending Provincial Cup champions—ICST Pegasus—by a hard-fought 2-1 margin after an exciting and entertaining 90 minutes of intense, non-stop action. After having squandered a few excellent goalscoring opportunities—on efforts by Ryan Glanville, Jesse Fetterley, Bruno Teixiera, and Justin Wallace—the West Van lads finally took the lead at the 20th minute mark when Justin Wallace converted a penalty kick into the go-ahead goal. The penalty kick was awarded when Wallace himself was fouled inside the 18-yard box by goalkeeper Andy Singh. At this point, the momentum of the game switched in favour of Pegasus and the home team fought back tenaciously in search of the equalizer. Azad Palani came close to tying things up at about the 25th minute mark but he fired his shot over the crossbar after having been set up by Jag Gill. However, at the 30th minute mark, Palani was brought down inside the penalty area by West Van defender Drew Gelley, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded. Midfielder Niko Marcina calmly struck home the spot shot for the tying goal. The remainder of the first half was closely-contested as both teams defended extremely well, limiting the goalscoring chances to a minimum. The second half started more or less in the same manner as the first, with West Van FC applying some noticeable pressure on the Pegasus defence. The visitors were rewarded at the 60th minute mark when Justin Wallace’s well-taken corner kick found Mike Winter at the far post. The recently-transferred Winter squared the ball back across the goal area onto the path of Jesse Fetterley who slotted the ball home from close range for what proved to be the winning goal. The goal seemed to spark the ‘Flying Horses’ as they dominated proceedings for the final 30 minutes despite the fact that they were unable to knot the score. The best goalscoring opportunity fell to Niko Marcina as he was stymied on a breakaway by goalkeeper Marco Durante. Shortly thereafter, Omari Aldridge flashed a header just wide of the net from a well-taken corner kick by Niko Marcina. Then Durante pulled off a couple of excellent saves on efforts by Chetan Jhooty and Diaz Kambere to preserve his team’s narrow margin of victory. For the victors, forwards Jesse Fetterley, Bruno Teixiera, and Ryan Glanville worked hard all game long as they created numerous goalscoring chances. Midfielder Justin Wallace also turned in a superlative performance as he worked extremely hard during the entire 90 minutes, and was instrumental in both goals. Defensively, Leo Nash, Drew Gelley, Max Baessatto, and Taku Bradshaw were rock-solid against the very talented and speedy Pegasus attackers, while goalkeeper Marco Durante came to the rescue on a few occasions to preserve the victory. Despite the heart-breaking loss, Pegasus’ midfielders Adam Costley and Niko Marcina—as well as defender Jag Sajan—played remarkably well. The result elevates West Van FC to first place in the Premier Division standings, with an enviable 11-4-1 record, while ICST Pegasus drops to second place, with 35 points from 17 games.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: WEST VAN FC for its gritty performance in defeating the highly-ranked—and very talented—ICST Pegasus in a very important match between the two top teams in the VMSL’s Premier Division. Led by some outstanding goalkeeping on the part of veteran goalkeeper Marco Durante, as well as some tireless midfield work by young Justin Wallace, West Van FC took over sole possession of first place as a result of the victory.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: West Van FC’s young midfielder JUSTIN WALLACE for his amazing performance in his team’s 2-1 victory over ICST Pegasus. The 19-year old Wallace had a great impact in the match as he scored the opening goal—on a penalty kick after he had been fouled—and set up the winner with a well-taken corner kick. For his outstanding performance this past week, JUSTIN WALLACE will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2012-01-31.

PREMIER DIVISION – WEEK 19

Five of the scheduled 6 Premier Division games were played this past weekend, while the Norvan Pacific vs Croatia SC match was postponed till Tuesday evening. The only ‘semi’ upset took place on Saturday at Trillium Park in Vancouver when Columbus FC bounced West Van FC out of first place by defeating the visitors by a 2-1 margin. All the other matches ended up with predictable results as ICST Pegasus regained possession of first place by virtue of a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the young Metro-Ford Wolves.

ICST PEGASUS - METRO-FORD WOLVES 3-1: On Friday evening, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, the defending Provincial Cup champions—ICST Pegasus—defeated the visiting Metro-Ford Wolves by a 3-1 margin. The young Wolves got off to a great start and created a few excellent scoring chances in the early part of the match. However, some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Andy Singh, coupled with some poor finishing by the Metro-Ford forwards, prevented the visitors from taking the early lead. In particular, Carlo Basso missed a wide-open net after he had brilliantly rounded Andy Singh. However, as the game progressed, the Pegasus lads found their legs and started exerting some pressure of their own. With the game still scoreless, Azad Palani came close to scoring on a couple of occasions but sailed his first shot over the crossbar and had his point-blank header saved by goalkeeper Mat Bird on his second effort. Midfielder Chetan Jhooty was also unfortunate not to open the scoring for the home team as he fired his shot over the crossbar. However, at the 30th minute mark, ICST Pegasus was able to take the lead when midfielder Niko Marcina collected a loose ball just outside the Metro-Ford penalty area and proceeded to fire a wicked, left-foot shot into the corner of the net for the game’s opening goal. Shortly thereafter, Adam Costley was denied a clear-cut goalscoring opportunity when his close-range shot was brilliantly saved by Mat Bird. Then, at the 40th minute mark, Pegasus scored what proved to be the winning goal when defender Paul Bahia fired a long-range first-time volley into the Metro-Ford net after having received a clever pass from Diaz Kambere. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first as both teams took turns attacking and defending. Needless to say, the more experienced Pegasus team had the better goalscoring opportunities with Ryan Powell and Jag Gill coming very close to adding to their team’s lead. However, it was Metro-Ford that narrowed the margin at about the 80th minute mark when Carlo Basso made amends for his earlier ‘faux-pas’ by chipping the ball over Andy Singh’s reach, after having received a great ball from Jovan Blagojevic. At this point, the Wolves threw caution to the wind in search of the equalizer but it was ICST Pegasus that scored the final goal as Niko Marcina and Ryan Powell combined to set up young Javid Khan on a lethal counter-attack. Khan made no mistake in finishing off the play and thus securing the well-deserved—and very important—victory for his team. Defensively, Paul Bahia, Satinder Dhaliwal, and Diaz Kambere played remarkably well for the winning team, while midfielders Adam Costley and Niko Marcina worked tirelessly during the entire 90 minutes. For the Wolves, defenders Anthony DiNicolo, Carson Gill, and Kia Mirzahossein played extremely well despite the loss, while young midfielder Domenic Delli Santi also performed admirably when he entered the field in the second half. The victory leap-frogs ICST Pegasus over West Van FC into first place in the Premier Division standings, while the Metro-Ford Wolves slip to 6th place, with a 8-2-7 record.

COLUMBUS FC - WEST VAN FC 2-1: On Saturday, at Trillium Park in Vancouver, Columbus FC edged the visiting West Van FC by a narrow 2-1 margin. The match turned out to be a hard-fought, and evenly-matched, affair between two of the top teams in the Premier Division. The first half finished scoreless, mostly due to the fact that neither team was willing to take any unnecessary chances. Things opened up during the second half as both teams came to the realization that they needed the entire 3 points in order to achieve their ultimate goal: to win the VMSL championship. At about the 60th minute mark, Columbus FC was finally able to score the opening goal when Nathan Quan set up Kaz Kikuchi, after having stripped the ball from West Van defender Max Baessato. Kikuchi proceeded to race down the right flank before unleashing a wicked strike that beat goalkeeper Hide` Ozawa at the near post. The former Trollers responded well to Columbus’ go-ahead goal and were rewarded at the 70th minute mark when veteran Paul Dailly curled one of his patented free-kicks around the Columbus wall and into the near post, surprising goalkeeper JD Blakley who was probably expecting a cross. It should be mentioned that the free kick was awarded when Columbus’ Graham Smith committed a controversial hand-ball foul just outside the penalty area. Both teams then took turns attacking in search of the all-important victory. However, both goalkeepers—Columbus’ JD Blakley and West Van’s Hide` Ozawa—came up with some big saves to keep the game tied until the 80th minute mark. At this point, the ‘Italians’ were finally able to score the winning goal when a fine cross by Cory Melville was skillfully controlled by Steve DeBlasio whose subsequent shot was blocked by West Van’s Max Baessato, only to be full-volleyed into the net by young Jevin Hillis. Defensively, Columbus’ Graham Smith and Nathan Quan were rock-solid, while midfielders Steve DeBlasio, Donald Kambere, and Leigh Sembaluk—as well as forward Kaz Kikuchi—were going concerns throughout the match. The victory improves Columbus’ record to 10-2-5, good for a third place tie with Surrey United in the Premier Division standings. West Van’s loss, on the other hand, drops the West Van FC to 2nd place, one point behind ICST Pegasus—albeit with a game in hand.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS 2-0: Also on Saturday afternoon, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, the Surrey United Firefighters remained in contention for the Premier Division title by defeating the hard-working Richmond FC Hibernians by a 2-0 margin. The first half was a fast-paced affair, with the Hibernians enjoying most of the ball possession and goalscoring opportunities. Midfielder Peter Chivers and forward Brad Caldwell had the best chances to score, but their efforts were either saved by goalkeeper Paul Shepherd or missed the net. At the other end of the pitch, VMSL’s leading goalscorer—Angus Burke—received a great pass from playing-coach Niall Thompson and fired an excellent shot towards the Richmond net, only to have the ball bounce off the goalpost and out of danger. The Firefighters turned in a much better performance in the second half and took the lead very early—at about the 50th minute mark—when a corner kick by Nick Perugini was headed towards the Richmond goal by Sean Parkes and consequently deflected into the net by none other than Angus Burke. The Hibernians bounced back and came very close to knotting the score at the 55th minute when an excellent cross by Alan Chivers found a wide-open Geoff Salt in the middle of the box. However, Salt’s subsequent diving header barely missed the target. Surrey United then managed to score the insurance marker—at about the 70th minute mark—when a dangerous cross by Colin Streckmann was tipped away by goalkeeper Luke O’Shea, only to have Angus Burke pick up the rebound and calmly deposit the ball into the back of the net for his 13th goal of the season. Despite the fact that the Firefighters controlled most of the play for the remainder of the match, the Hibernians came very close to narrowing the margin at the 85th minute mark when Brad Caldwell sent Matt Rota in on goal with a splendid pass. Unfortunately for Rota—and the rest of the Hibs—his close-range shot was brilliantly saved by Paul Shepherd. Defensively, Surrey United’s Nick Perugini, Sean Parkes, Braden Volkenton, and Steve Kindel played extremely well, helping goalkeeper Paul Shepherd register the well-earned clean-sheet. Despite the loss, goalkeeper Luke O’Shea, defenders Connor Radil and Marcus Brougham, midfielders Cam Stokes and Peter Chivers, and striker Brad Caldwell played remarkably well for the Hibernians. The victory keeps Surrey United tied for 3rd place with Columbus FC, with identical 10-2-5 records, while the Hibernians remain in 7th place, with 20 points from 16 games.

ROVERS UNITED - WESTSIDE FC 5-1: The third—and last—Saturday game was played at Newton Athletic Park between the hosting Rovers United and the visiting Westside FC. A rather lacklustre first half by the home team allowed the Westsiders to control most of the play and thus create a few goalscoring chances. In particular, David Andreychuk—after beating a couple of Rovers’ defenders—had his close-range shot spectacularly saved by goalkeeper Garth Lagasse. A totally different Rovers squad showed up in the second half as the home team took over the reins of the match and dominated proceedings for virtually the entire 45 minutes. At about the 60th minute mark, Desmond Tachie gave the Rovers the lead as he unleashed a hard, rising shot from the right flank, a shot that gave goalkeeper Tom Johnston very little chance. A couple of minutes later, Rizal Ganief scored what proved to be the winning goal on a long-range free-kick that inexplicably sneaked through Tom Johnston’s legs. Shortly thereafter, Andrew Celenza added insult to Westside’s injury as he scored the insurance marker after having received a great through ball from Bobby Jhutty. To their credit, the Westsiders fought back and narrowed the margin at the 73rd minute mark when James Brown—after having received an excellent pass from Reece Branion—hammered a left-footed shot into the back of the Rovers’ net, thus spoiling Garth Lagasse’s attempt to register a shutout. However, the Rovers re-established their 3-goal lead at the 75th minute mark when Rizal Ganief one-timed a brilliant cross from Desmond Tachie into the back of the net from well inside the penalty area. At the 80th minute mark, the Rovers rounded out the scoring as Rizal Ganief finished off his hat-trick on a well-taken penalty kick. The spot shot was awarded when Ganief himself was tripped inside the penalty area by young Jonathan Wou. The entire Rovers team played very well, but special mention should be made of goalkeeper Garth Lagasse, midfielders Rob Sing and Colin Phillips, and forwards Desmond Tachie, Rizal Ganief, and Sidd Achuthan. Despite the rather humiliating loss, Westside’s defender Christoph Barrow—as well as midfielders Nick Graham and Reece Branion—worked very hard throughout the contest. The victory leaves Rovers United in 9th place, with a 5-3-9 record, while Westside FC remains mired in last place with only 9 points from 17 matches.

DELTA UNITED HURRICANES - ICSF INTER 4-2: On Sunday, at John Oliver Park in Delta, the Delta United Hurricanes climbed into sole possession of 5th place by defeating the visiting ICSF Inter by a 4-2 margin. The ‘Italians’ got off to a great start and took the early lead at the 15th minute mark when Sheldon Maistry picked up the rebound off Massimo Beninteso’s wicked drive—a shot that had hit the goalpost—and calmly deposited the ball into the empty net. One minute later, Delta United’s Ryan Dhillon knotted the score as he raced past a couple of Inter defenders before slotting the ball into the back of the net for the equalizer. The remainder of the first half was controlled by the Hurricanes, although they were unable to score what would have been the go-ahead goal. In fact, on two separate occasions, Inter’s goalkeeper—Dennis Kindel—came up with brilliant saves on shots by David Chohan and Harp Khakh to keep the score tied till the halftime whistle. In the second half—at the 60th minute mark—Kindel once again rose to the occasion and pulled off another magnificent save on a shot by Danny Badesha—after Badesha had made a fantastic run down the right flank—only to have Ryan Dhillon pick up the rebound and place the ball into the net. Soon thereafter—at about the 70th minute mark—Delta United scored the insurance marker when Ryan Dhillon and Bikramjit Parhar combined to set up Harp Khakh, whose brilliant header gave Kindel no chance whatsoever. At the 75th minute mark, Ryan Dhillon completed his hat-trick, once again a fine individual effort. A few minutes later, Inter narrowed the margin with Sheldon Maistry once again scoring off a rebound—this time on a shot by Stephen Yuan. Defenders Gurj Sandhu and Danny Badesha played extremely well for the Hurricanes, while forward Ryan Dhillon not only scored twice, but also drove the Inter defence to distraction with his pace and skill. Needless to say, Sheldon Maistry played very well for ICSF Inter, while forward Stephen Yuan, midfielder Massimo Beninteso, and defender Rey Ismail also turned in excellent performances. The Hurricanes’ victory improves their record to 8-4-5, while Inter is getting closer and closer to the relegation zone, with only 14 points from 17 games.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: COLUMBUS FC for its clinical performance in defeating the highly-ranked—and very aggressive—West Van FC by a 2-1 margin, in an extremely important match between two of the top teams in the VMSL’s Premier Division. Led by some inspirational performances on the part of midfielder Steve DeBlasio, defender Nathan Quan, and forward Kaz Kikuchi, Columbus FC fully deserved the narrow margin of victory.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Delta United Hurricanes’ RYAN DHILLON for his incredible hat-trick performance in his team’s hard-fought 4-2 victory over ICSF Inter. Not only did Dhillon score 3 goals—and set up the fourth marker—but he also worked tirelessly throughout the match in leading his team to victory. For his outstanding performance this past week, RYAN DHILLON will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2012-02-14.

PREMIER DIVISION – MAKE-UP GAMES

Four Premier Division make-up games were played this past week, while the Imperial Cup playdowns got off to a blazing start. No huge upsets occurred in either league play or cup play, although ICST Pegasus’ 6-2 victory over Columbus FC can certainly be considered a big surprise.

CROATIA SC - NORVAN PACIFIC 2-1: On Tuesday evening, at William Griffin Park in North Vancouver, Croatia SC edged Norvan Pacific by a 2-1 margin in a Day 19 make-up game. The match was evenly played with both teams taking turns attacking and defending. At about the 20th minute mark, the Croatians almost took the lead when Ryan Zaharija’s long-range free-kick was blocked by the Norvan wall. Zaharija picked up the rebound and hammered a wicked drive towards the Norvan net. However, goalkeeper Giancarlo Martino came up with a spectacular save to keep the score tied at 0-0. However, a few minutes later, Croatia SC was able to take the all-important lead when veteran Chris Craveiro swung another long-range free-kick towards the Norvan goal. The ball eluded all the players that were attempting to head it and ended up in the top corner of the net, fooling Giancarlo Martino, who was probably expecting someone to head it. For the remainder of the first half Norvan Pacific fought back tenaciously in search of the equalizer with Sebastian Crema and Matt Hartwell coming close to knotting the score. However, despite the consistent Norvan pressure, the score remained 1-0 in Croatia’s favour until the halftime whistle. In the second half, Norvan Pacific—led by the excellent midfield play of Martin Nash, Nick Seddon, and Davey O’Connor—continued to press hard for the equalizer, while the Croatians seemed satisfied to defend their narrow margin. Some excellent saves on the part of goalkeeper Dennis Mrsic and a gritty midfield performance by Philip Kotter paid enormous dividends for Croatia SC. However, midway through the second half, Norvan Pacific was finally able to score the equalizer when newly-reinstated former Whitecap captain Martin Nash—making his VMSL debut—unleashed a wicked drive from well outside the penalty area into the top corner of the Croatia net, giving goalkeeper Dennis Mrsic no chance whatsoever. At this point, both teams threw caution to the wind and pressed hard in search of the very important 3 points. Very late in the match—at about the 88th minute mark—the Croatians were able to secure the victory when Maarten Koorn headed the ball past goalkeeper Giancarlo Martino only to have defender Kyle Guay clear it off the line. However, veteran Darko Jelic was strategically placed and proceeded to hammer the ball home from point-blank range. The hard-earned victory puts Croatia SC in 7th place in the VMSL standings—with a record of 6-3-9, while Norvan Pacific is still languishing in penultimate place, with only 11 points out of 16 games.

WEST VAN FC - ICSF INTER 4-0: On Friday evening, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, the hosting West Van FC demolished the struggling ICSF Inter by an emphatic 4-0 margin. Despite the rather embarrassing scoreline, it was ICSF Inter that had the better goalscoring chances in the early going with Roman Doutkevitch and Sheldon Maistry both nearly giving their team the lead with glorious opportunities. As luck would have it however, it was the home team that took the lead at about the 35th minute mark when a Paul Dailly corner kick was headed towards the Inter goal by Max Baessato only to have goalkeeper Dennis Kindel make a brilliant save. Unfortunately for Kindel—and the rest of the Inter clan—defender Tim Perry was able to pick up the rebound and score his first goal of the season from very close range. In the second half, West Van FC took over the reins of the match and dominated proceeding for virtually the entire 45 minutes. The former Trollers doubled their lead very early in the second half—at about the 50th minute mark—when a fine cross by Drew Gelley from the right flank was headed across the goalmouth by former Inter player Mike Winter and then slotted home by Ryan Glanville from very close range. A few minutes later—at the 55th minute mark—West Van FC put the match out of Inter’s reach when a long-range cross/shot by Taku Bradshaw caught Dennis Kindel by surprise as the ball sailed over his head and into the top corner of the net. It should be mentioned that West Van’s goalkeeper—Marco Durante—started the play with some excellent distribution as he sent Bradshaw flying down the right flank. At the 65th minute, West Van FC rounded out the scoring when a Justin Wallace corner-kick was headed back across the goal mouth by Gary Anderson and subsequently one-timed into the back of the net by Jesse Fetterley from the edge of the penalty area. The entire West Van FC team played well but special mention should be made of forwards Justin Wallace, Taku Bradshaw, and Jesse Fetterley who created numerous goalscoring chances, particularly in the second half. Defensively, Max Baessato and Tim Perry were rock-solid as they made life relatively easy for goalkeeper Marco Durante as he earned yet another clean-sheet. For ICSF Inter, young midfielders Luigi Pantusa and Juan Sanchez turned in excellent performances, albeit in a losing cause. The victory keeps West Van FC in second place, only one point behind ICST Pegasus and with a game in hand. ICSF Inter, on the other hand, remains in the relegation-danger zone with a record 3-5-10, only 3 points ahead of penultimate-place Norvan Pacific.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - CROATIA SC 2-0: Also on Friday evening, at Trillium Park in Vancouver, the visiting Surrey United Firefighters climbed into sole possession of third place by defeating Croatia SC by a 2-0 score. The Firefighters exerted some early pressure on the Croatian defence and almost took the lead at the 10th minute mark when young Coulton Jackson unleashed a wicked drive from the edge of the penalty area, a shot that unfortunately for the visitors hit the goalpost with goalkeeper Didar Sandhu well-beaten. However, at the 20th minute mark, Surrey United took the lead when Andrew Proctor—after having received a great cross from Coulton Jackson—was fouled inside the Croatian penalty area by Ivan Prpic, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded. Proctor himself stepped up to the plate and easily converted the spot shot into what proved to be the winning goal. Soon thereafter, things got even worse for the Croatians as Ryan Zaharija was sent off the field of play for having committed a serious foul play infraction. Then, to add insult to the Croatian injury, the Firemen added their second goal at the 35th minute mark when midfielder Colin Streckmann set up Andrew Proctor with a nifty pass. Proctor proceeded to round the goalkeeper and bury the ball into the wide open net for the insurance marker. The second half was rather a tedious affair as the Firefighters appeared content with the 2-0 lead, while the short-handed Croatians had difficulty exerting any meaningful pressure. Late in the match, Surrey’s Coulton Jackson was sent off for having received his second caution of the contest. Needless to say, Andrew Proctor turned in an outstanding performance for Surrey United, while goalkeeper Paul Shepherd had a rather easy time in recording yet another shutout. For Croatia SC, midfielders Philip Kotter and Goran Vitic were standouts, while young veteran Johnny Sulentic was his usual dangerous self on the forward line. As mentioned earlier, the victory—combined with Columbus’ loss—elevates the Firefighters into sole possession of third place, with a record of 11-2-5. Croatia SC, on the other hand, remains in 7th place with a mediocre 6-3-9 record.

ICST PEGASUS - COLUMBUS FC 6-2: On Saturday, at Trillium Park in Vancouver, ICST Pegasus remained in first place in the Premier Division standings by virtue of a rather emphatic 6-2 victory over the aspiring, but unpredictable, Columbus FC in a Day 18 make-up game. Despite the fact that they were missing several key players, the ‘Italians’ got off to a bright start and took the early lead when, at the 20th minute mark, young Jevin Hillis headed home a fine cross from veteran Craig Richards. The defending BC Provincial Cup champions bounced back and knotted the score 15 minutes later when Azad Palani’s powerful header—on an immaculate cross by fullback Omari Aldridge—found the back of the net. It should be mentioned that Aldridge had made a brilliant, overlapping run down the left flank before crossing the ball onto Palani’s path. Pegasus then almost took the lead on a couple of occasions, but efforts by Jag Gill and Reynold Stewart went awry. Late in the first half, Columbus FC regained the lead on a fine individual effort by captain Steve DeBlasio as he raced in all alone on a lethal breakaway and finished off the play by brilliantly chipping the ball over the goalkeeper. At this juncture, Pegasus’ goalkeeper Andy Singh suffered a knee injury and had to be replaced by Amar Dhinsa. While the first half was very evenly played, the second half belonged totally to the Pegasus lads as they pushed forward relentlessly in search of the all-important 3 points. After exerting a lot of pressure on the Columbus defence, the visitors were finally able to knot the score at the 60th minute mark when midfielder Reynold Stewart collected a loose ball at the top of the Columbus penalty area and proceeded to fire a precise, left-foot shot into the corner of the net. Shortly thereafter, fullback Andrew Reed—after having made an amazing run down the right flank—converted an excellent pass from Reynold Stewart into what proved to be the winning goal. Then, at the 70th minute mark, midfielder Chetan Jhooty—after having beaten a couple of Columbus defenders with some excellent footwork—whipped a cross into the box, a cross that was ultimately converted by Reynold Stewart into Pegasus’ fourth goal. Five minutes later, Stewart was fouled inside the Columbus penalty area by Cory Melville. On the ensuing penalty kick, Niko Marcina made no mistake, thus scoring Pegasus’ 5th goal. Late in the match, Azad Palani set up fellow forward Jag Gill in front of the Columbus net. Gill finished off the play with a brilliant, one-timed shot to seal Pegasus’ well-deserved victory. Needless to say, the entire Pegasus squad played extremely well but special mention should be made of the performance of central midfielder Adam Costley whose bulldog strength and tenacity contributed immensely to his team’s victory. As well, midfielder Reynold Stewart turned in a superlative performance as he scored two goals and set up two others. Despite the emphatic loss, Columbus’ defender Nathan Quan and goalkeeper JD Blakley performed remarkably well under difficult circumstances. As well, the Masters’ call-ups—Frank Mollica, Craig Richards, Gino Gaita, and Peter Rosati—should be mentioned for their tenacious efforts. Pegasus’ record thus improves to an impressive 12-5-2, while Columbus drops to 4th place with a 10-2-6 record.

IMPERIAL CUP – FIRST ROUND

BINGER’S ARMY - NK HRVAT 3-0: On Friday evening, at Vancouver Technical School, two Division 1 teams faced off in the opening round of the Imperial Cup. At the end of the day, the visiting Binger’s Army walked away with a rather easy 3-0 victory over the home team, NK Hrvat. Midway through the first half, Binger’s Aaron Arnold was fouled inside the NK Hrvat penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick being awarded. Devin Todd-Jones then proceeded to slot the ball home from the 11-metre mark for what proved to be the winning goal. Early in the second half, Binger’s Army doubled its lead when Andrew Cooke’s left-footed volley sailed into the top corner of the Hrvat net. A few minutes later, Andrew Cooke added his second goal of the contest as he raced in on a breakaway after having been set up by his younger brother David Cooke. Goalkeeper Chris O’Connor fully deserved the clean-sheet in the Binger’s army net, while midfielder Geoff Matthews and forward Andrew Cooke turned in excellent performances. Binger’s Army thus progresses to the Round of 16 in the Imperial Cup playdowns where they will face another Division 1 team, Akal FC.

ROVERS UNITED - NORVAN PACIFIC 2-0: On Saturday, at Confederation Park in North Vancouver, the Rovers matched Norvan’s tenacity and eventually prevailed by a 2-0 margin. The first half was evenly-played, although the Rovers did create most of the goalscoring opportunities. Late in the first half, Norvan’s David O’Connor was sent off for using foul and abusive language, thus reducing the home team to 10 players for the remainder of the match. Needless to say, the Rovers took full advantage of the situation and dominated the entire second half, scoring two goals and coming close to adding to their lead on several other occasions. The first goal was scored at the 75th minute mark when Colin Phillips sent Desmond Tachie flying down the right flank with an exquisite pass. Tachie’s subsequent cross was then hammered into the back of the net by second-half substitute Jason Pierotti. Ten minutes later Pierotti scored again, this time on a lethal counter-attack that was initiated by some fine passing between Rizal Ganief and Bobby Jhutty. The entire Rovers United team played extremely well, but special mention should be made of defender Mike Buikema, midfielders Colin Phillips and Bobby Jhutty, as well as forwards Jason Pierotti, Desmond Tachie, and Rizal Ganief for their excellent performances. The Norvan goalkeeper—Giancarlo Martino—was kept busy throughout the match and made several key saves to keep the scoreline respectable. The Rovers will now advance to the Imperial Cup Round of 16 where they will face the always dangerous Richmond Hibernians.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - RICHMOND FC OLYMPICS 6-1: Also on Saturday, at Minoru Oval in Richmond, the Richmond Hibernians demolished their Division 1 clubmates—Richmond FC Olympics—by a decisive 6-1 margin. As expected, the Hibernians controlled the flow of the match from start to finish and fully deserved the emphatic margin of victory. The Hibs took the lead at the 18th minute mark when Alan Chivers’ header—from a cross by Marcus Brougham—was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Michael Paynter, only to have Geoff Salt volley home the rebound. Late in the first half, the Hibernians added to their lead when the Olympics’ player-coach—Jared McGowan—fouled Alex Orasa inside the penalty area. On the ensuing penalty kick, Orasa hammered the ball into the top corner of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. Early in the second half, the Hibs scored two goals in rapid succession to put the game out of the Olympics’ reach. On the first goal, defender Marcus Brougham made a great run down the right flank before unleashing a vicious long-range drive towards the Olympics’ net, a shot which deflected off a defender and into the net. A couple of minutes later, a pin-point cross by defender Rory Gattens found Darren Prentice at the near post. Prentice proceeded to clinically head the ball into the net for the Hibs’ 4th goal. At this point, the Hibernians appeared to go into a sleep-mode and the Olympics took full advantage of the situation by scoring their lone goal of the contest. It occurred at the 60th minute mark when young Brandon Hauk scored on a cracking half-volley. Obviously, the goal was the wake-up call that the Hibs needed as they once again took over the reins of the match and scored two more goals before the final whistle. The 5th Hibs goal was scored at the 73rd minute when striker Erik Olsen beat two defenders before curling a fantastic shot into the top corner of the Olympics’ net. Olsen then proceeded to score his second goal of the match—at the 83rd minute—when he took advantage of a defensive blunder before finding the bottom corner of the net with a fine shot. Defensively, Mike Revell and Geoff Salt played very well for the Hibernians, while midfielders Rory Gattens and Alex Orasa—as well as forward Darren Prentice—also turned in excellent performances. The Richmond FC Hibernians will therefore advance to the Round of 16 where they will face Rovers United in what promises to be a very interesting match.

DELTA UNITED HURRICANES - TSA ROYALS 7-0: The third Saturday game was played at John Oliver Park in Delta and featured the Premier Division Delta Hurricanes and the Division 1 TSA Royals. The heavily-favoured Hurricanes lived up to their expectations and walked away with a rather easy 7-0 victory after a rather one-sided 90 minutes of play. Newly-transferred Amar Mander opened the scoring for Delta United at the 10th minute mark when he blasted an unstoppable rocket of a shot into the top corner of the net from just outside the penalty area. To add insult to the Royals’ injury, Tom Brook was sent off at the 25th mark for spitting at an opponent. The Hurricanes took advantage of the situation and added their second goal early in the second half with Amar Mander once again involved in the play. On this occasion, Mander—after racing in on a breakaway—cut the ball back onto the path of Joti Thind, whose subsequent one-timer found the back of the net. At the 60th minute mark, Thind became the provider as he carbon-copied Mander’s previous effort and set up Josh Northey in similar fashion. Northey had no difficulty in finishing off the play and thus scoring Delta’s 3rd goal of the match. In the 67th minute, Northey displayed some fine footwork as he broke away from two TSA defenders before neatly tucking the ball under the Royals’ goalkeeper. Then, at the 75th minute mark, Northey virtually repeated his previous goal, once again breaking away from the flat-footed Royals defence before slotting the ball past their goalkeeper. A couple of minutes later, Northey scored his 4th goal of the match in similar fashion, after once again having raced in on goal on a breakaway. The final goal of the match was scored at the 85th minute mark with Northey once again in the picture. This time he set up Amar Mander, whose wicked drive sailed into the Royals’ net. Needless to say, Josh Northey and Amar Mander turned in superlative performances, while midfielder Oscar Jiminez also played remarkably well. The victory advances the Delta United Hurricanes to the Round of 16 in the Imperial Cup competition where they will face another Division 1 team, Estrella de Chile.

ESTRELLA DE CHILE - RINO’S VANCOUVER 2-0: Also on Saturday, at Burnaby Lake West, two Division 1 teams—Estrella de Chile and Rino’s Vancouver—faced off in the preliminary round of the Imperial Cup. After an entertaining 90 minutes of non-stop action, the Chileans walked away with a well-earned 2-0 victory. Both goals came early in the match as the Chileans took advantage of some sloppy defending on the part of the visiting team. Fifteen minutes into the game, Estrella de Chile opened the scoring when Eric Ray sent Ducivan De Souza racing down the middle of the park towards Rino’s goal. De Souza then calmly chipped the ball over on onrushing goalkeeper to score what proved to be the winning goal. Ten minutes later, Stedman Espinoza and Ducivan De Souza combined to set up Murtada Almatrood down the right flank. Almatrood then proceeded to strike a great shot to the short side of the net for his team’s insurance marker. The rest of the match was an evenly-played affair with Rino’s Vancouver trying desperately to get back into the contest and Estrella de Chile—led by centre-back Narcisse Tchoumi—defending tenaciously. The hard-earned victory advances Estrella de Chile to the Round of 16 where it will meet Delta United Hurricanes.

COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES - WESTSIDE FC 3-2: The fifth, and last, Saturday game was played at South Memorial Park in Vancouver and featured two Premier Division teams—the hosting Westside FC and the visiting Metro-Ford Wolves. After a well-played 90 minutes, the Coquitlam team walked away with a hard-earned 3-2 victory, a result that puts the Wolves into the next round of the Imperial Cup. The visitors took the early lead at the 15th minute mark when Sang Yoon Hwang took a wicked free kick from well outside the penalty area that goalkeeper James Possee mishandled. Brayden Gant then proceeded to pick up the rebound and slot the ball home for Metro-Ford’s first goal. The Westsiders fought back and restored parity at the 30th minute mark when Mike Buree’s fine cross was brilliantly bicycle-kicked by young Reece Branion into the top corner of the net. Metro-Ford took control of the match in the second half and dictated the pace of the game for virtually the entire 45 minutes. The Wolves were rewarded for the constant pressure at about the 60th minute mark when Jovan Blagojevic—after having made a great run through several defenders—slotted his shot inside the near post. Then, 10 minutes later, Metro-Ford scored what proved to be the winning goal when Brayden Gant flicked the ball into the net from a well-taken corner kick by Jovan Blagojevic. However, Westside FC made things interesting when, at the 80th minute mark, Wyatt Seddon-Johnstone converted a free-kick cross into his team’s second goal with a wicked one-time shot. At this point, the Westsiders threw caution to the wind and started attacking in a desperate search of the tying goal, but without any success. Metro-Ford’s midfield trio—Andrew Veer, Brayden Gant, and Jovan Blagojevic—played extremely well throughout the match while defender Anthony DiNicolo turned in a rock-solid performance. For Westside FC, defender Ben Elliott and young Reece Branion performed admirably, albeit in a losing cause. The Wolves will now take on the Vancouver Olympics in the next round of the Imperial Cup.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ICST PEGASUS for its brilliant performance in defeating the highly-rated Columbus FC by an emphatic 6-2 margin. IMPERIAL CUP – ROUND OF 16

ICST PEGASUS - CROATIA SC 2-0: On Friday evening, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, the heavily-favoured ICST Pegasus disposed of Croatia SC by a 2-0 margin and thus advanced to the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup competition. The defending Provincial Cup champions got off to a lethargic start and allowed the Croatians to dominate the early part of the match. In fact, the visitors came close to scoring on a couple of occasions in the early going, both on shots by former professional Johnny Sulentic. On the first effort—at the 4th minute mark—Sulentic was sent in on goal on a breakaway by veteran Chris Craveiro. However, goalkeeper Amar Dhinsa came to Pegasus’ rescue as he pulled off a sensational save to keep the game scoreless. Shortly thereafter—at the 7th minute mark—young Kreso Ukalovic’s excellent cross was controlled by Johnny Sulentic at the edge of the Pegasus penalty area. Unfortunately for the Croatians, Sulentic’s subsequent shot rattled off the crossbar and out of danger. As the game progressed, however, the Pegasus lads seemed to find their legs and started to exert some pressure on Croatia’s backline, thus creating some goalscoring chances of their own. In particular, Azad Palani fired a wicked shot just over the crossbar, while fullbacks Andrew Reed and Omari Aldridge whipped in several dangerous crosses, causing the Croatian defenders some grief. Finally, at the 30th minute mark, ICST Pegasus took the lead when Reynold Stewart easily tapped the ball into the open net, thus finishing off a nifty passing play between forwards Jag Gill and Azad Palani. The home team continued to press during the second half but the Croatians were also very dangerous on a few counter-attacks. In particular, at the 58th minute mark, youth call-up Colin Jacques was sent in on goal by Johnny Sulentic but his close-range shot was once again brilliantly saved by Amar Dhinsa. Shortly thereafter—at the 65th minute mark—ICST Pegasus scored the insurance marker when midfielder Chetan Jhooty played a superb cross to Reynold Stewart, whose header sailed into the net. Late in the game the Croatians almost narrowed the margin when former Whitecap Jason Jordan was brilliantly set up by young Colin Jacques only to watch agonizingly as his shot narrowly missed the net. Despite the loss, Croatia’s defenders Maarten Koorn and Robin Hart played extremely well as did youth call-ups Colin Jacques and Narkiian Kostjuk. Needless to say, young veteran Johnny Sulentic was his usual dangerous self throughout the match. For the winners, goalkeeper Amar Dhinsa fully earned his clean-sheet with a superlative performance, while defender Omari Aldridge and midfielder Reynold Stewart were going concerns throughout the contest. The victory advances ICST Pegasus to the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup where they will face Estrella de Chile—a Division 1 team.

WEST VAN FC - LOBBANS FC 4-0: On Saturday, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, West Van FC easily defeated the Division 1 Lobbans FC by a clear-cut 4-0 margin. As the score indicates, the match was a rather one-sided affair, although the visitors tried very hard and actually came close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Very early in the match, the former Trollers took the lead when Jesse Fetterley converted a brilliant set-up by fellow forward Ryan Glanville into what proved to be the winning goal. A couple of minutes later, it was Glanville’s turn to score after having received a nifty pass from veteran Paul Dailly. Then, at the 18th minute mark, Paul Dailly became the finisher as he finished off an excellent pass from Justin Wallace from just inside the penalty area. Late in the first half, West Van FC rounded out the scoring when Corey Birza was sent down the left flank by Ryan Glanville’s perfectly struck through ball. Birza—playing his first game in 3 months due to an injury—proceeded to finish off the play by calmly depositing the ball into the back of the Lobbans’ net. Forwards Ryan Glanville and Jesse Fetterley—as well as midfielders Corey Birza, Paul Dailly, and Justin Wallace—were constant threats all game long. Defender Taku Bradshaw also deserves special mention not only for his defensive performance, but also for joining in the West Van attack with some great runs. West Van FC thus advances to the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup where they will face another Division 1 team—Akal FC.

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES 8-1: Also on Saturday, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, the defending Imperial Cup champions—Surrey United—eliminated the Serbian White Eagles from further participation in the competition with a convincing 8-1 victory. The first Division Serbians offered some stern resistance in the opening 20 minutes, turning away a somewhat uninspired Surrey United team. However, the Firefighters achieved the initial breakthrough in the 20th minute when Angus Burke slammed the ball home after Andrew Proctor had cleverly set him up. A few minutes later, Surrey United scored what proved to be the winning goal on a fine shot by Colin Streckmann. The Firefighters turned on the jets in the second half, adding six goals to their elaborate margin of victory. Former Whitecaps skipper—Jeff Clarke—notched 3 goals, with his overhead bicycle kick being by far the best of his markers. Angus Burke, Andrew Proctor, and Ryan Reynolds rounded out the scoring for the Firefighters. The White Eagles were able to score their only goal of the match midway through the second half when Sasa Vukovic took advantage of some sloppy defending on the part of the Firemen and laid the ball off to Jonathan Hodgett who made no mistake in firing home the consolation marker. Surrey United will therefore progress to the Imperial Cup quarter-finals, against the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves.

COLUMBUS FC - ICSF INTER 4-0: The ‘Italian’ derby did not live up to its expectations as Columbus FC demolished ICSF Inter by an elaborate 4-0 margin, thus virtually ending Inter’s hopes of qualifying for the Provincial Cup. Even though Columbus FC took over the reins of the match from the opening whistle, it was Inter that came close to scoring in the early going when Rey Ismail set up Luigi Pantusa with a fine pass. Pantusa’s subsequent shot, however, was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper JD Blakely, thus keeping the match scoreless till the 20th minute mark. At this point, Columbus’ Stefano Pannu collected a wonderful through ball from midfielder Leigh Sembaluk and proceeded to send a well-placed cross into the danger zone where an onrushing Kozo Manome made no mistake in volleying the ball into the back of the Inter net from well inside the penalty area. Columbus’ second goal came 15 minutes later when forward Donald Kambere collected an excellent pass from defender Nathan Quan along the right flank, dribbled by a couple of Inter defenders, and finally sent an impeccable cross into the Inter penalty area onto the path of newly-signed Joey Audia who proceeded to volley the ball into the top corner of the net. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first as Columbus FC dictated the pace of the match, giving ICSF Inter very few dangerous opportunities. On one of these rare occasions, Inter almost crawled back into the game as a long-range shot from Joseph Marrello hit the goalpost and was cleared out of danger. Columbus FC responded in kind and almost added to its lead shortly thereafter on a couple of occasions. On the first, Leigh Sembaluk’s rising shot from well outside the penalty area sailed over the crossbar while on the second effort Donald Kambere’s clever chip shot just barely missed the net. At the 60th minute mark, however, Columbus FC was able to score its third goal when Donald Kambere intercepted an errant Inter pass and quickly blasted the ball into the net with a low, hard shot. With Inter pressing hard in a desperate effort to get on the scoresheet, Columbus was able to secure its 4th goal on a lethal counter-attack when, at the 80th minute mark, Leigh Sembaluk found a streaking Kozo Manome, whose brilliant chip shot found the top right corner of the net, past an onrushing Dennis Kindel—Inter’s goalkeeper. Despite missing 10 regular players from its line-up, Columbus FC turned in an impressively solid performance. Special mention should be made of defenders Graham Smith and Jonathan Poli, midfielders Kozo Manome, Leigh Sembaluk, and John Abbrusci, as well as forwards Joey Audia and Donald Kambere for their excellent performances. The victory advances Columbus FC to the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup where they will face the always tough Richmond FC Hibernians.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - ROVERS UNITED 4-2: The fourth Saturday game was played at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey and featured the hosting Rovers United and the visiting Richmond FC Hibernians. After a hard-fought 90 minutes of non-stop action, the Hibs walked away with a well-deserved 4-2 victory, a result that qualifies them for the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup. Richmond FC took the early lead when a well-taken corner kick by Peter Chivers was brilliantly headed into the back of the net by defender Marcus Brougham. The Rovers roared back and came very close to knotting the score shortly thereafter, but Richmond goalkeeper Luke O’Shea came up with a fantastic save on a shot by Rizal Ganief, a shot that seemed destined for the back of the net. The next 30 minutes saw both teams taking turns attacking and defending with neither one having any clear-cut goalscoring chances. However, at the 38th minute mark, Richmond’s patience and solid defending paid off when midfielder Alex Orasa—after having stripped the ball from an opponent—sent Darren Prentice racing in on goal with a magnificent defence-splitting through ball. Prentice had no difficulty in finishing off the play as he calmly slotted the ball home for the Hibernians’ second goal. However, the Rovers managed to score two late first half goals to knot the score before the halftime whistle. On the first goal, Andrew Celenza sent Desmond Tachie down the right flank with a superb through ball. Tachie’s subsequent low cross was then tapped into the net by Rizal Ganief from close range. The second Rovers’ goal, was scored just before the break as Desmond Tachie took advantage of a Richmond defensive blunder, beat the goalkeeper to the ball and placed it into the empty net for the equalizer. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first, with both teams trying hard to secure the victory. At the 60th minute mark, the Hibs almost regained the lead when Darren Prentice and Brad Caldwell combined to set up Alex Orasa. Unfortunately for Orasa—and the entire Hibs clan—his first time shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Garth Lagasse. However, a few minutes later, Richmond FC scored what proved to be the winning goal when Darren Prentice scored his second goal of the match. The play started with a great run down the left flank by fullback Rory Gattens, whose excellent cross found Alex Orasa inside the Rovers’ penalty area. Orasa’s diving header, however, was brilliantly saved by Garth Lagasse only to have Darren Prentice pick up the rebound and volley the loose ball into the roof of the net. Late in the match, Erik Olsen neatly finished off a brilliant pass from Brad Caldwell, thus sealing the Hibernians’ victory. Defender Mike Revell, midfielder Alex Orasa, and forwards Darren Prentice and Brad Caldwell played extremely well for Richmond FC as they guided their team to the all-important victory. For the Rovers, goalkeeper Garth Lagasse made numerous excellent saves, while defender Sidd Achuthan was rock-solid during the entire 90 minutes. Forwards Rizal Ganief, Jason Pierotti, and Desmond Tachie also performed admirably, albeit in a losing cause. The Richmond Hibernians will now face Columbus FC in the next round of the Imperial Cup.

AKAL FC - BINGER’S ARMY 3-1: Also on Saturday, a Division 1 Imperial Cup match took place at Trillium Park in Vancouver between the hosting Binger’s Army and the visiting Akal FC. After a hard-fought 90 minutes of play, the visitors walked away with a well-deserved 3-1 victory. Akal FC took the lead at the 20th minute mark when Pavi Dhillon converted an excellent pass from Harjot Mundi into the opening goal. Soon thereafter, Mundi almost doubled Akal’s lead, but his shot barely missed the net. Binger’s Army bounced back tenaciously in the second half and eventually—at about the 60th minute mark—knotted the score on a well-taken penalty kick by Devin Todd-Jones. The spot shot was awarded when Akal’s Avin Sidhu fouled Lance Grisdale as he was attempting to head the ball inside the penalty area. However, at the 70th minute mark, Akal FC restored its lead as Emmanuel Ayiku finished off a great play, also involving Pavin Grewal. A few minutes later, Binger’s Army came close to tying things up, but Vaughn Richards’ hard drive bounced off the crossbar and out of danger. As luck would have it, it was Akal FC that rounded out the scoring soon thereafter when Pavi Dhillon and Harjot Mundi repeated their earlier feat in very similar fashion. Once again, Mundi’s pass was converted by Dhillon into what proved to be the insurance marker. Late in the match, Akal’s Danil Shorohov almost scored his team’s 4th goal, but his shot sailed wide of the target. Akal’s goalkeeper Nuno Jesus and midfielder Pavin Grewal played extremely well in leading their team to the all-important victory. For Binger’s Army, forward Andrew Cook, goalkeeper Chris O’Connor, and midfielders Aaron Arnold, Lance Grisdale, and Vaughn Richards performed admirably well despite the loss. Akal FC’s victory places them in the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup where they will face the heavily-favoured West Van FC.

COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES - VANCOUVER OLYMPICS 5-4 (OT): The 6th, and last, Saturday game was played at South Memorial Park in Vancouver between the Division 1 Vancouver Olympics and the Premier Division Metro-Ford Wolves. To say the match was entertaining is an understatement as both teams threw caution to the wind during the entire 120 minutes, trying desperately to secure the victory. The underdog Olympics unexpectedly took the early lead when Arnel Naidu set up Justin Isidro with an exquisite pass. Isidro then beat a couple of Metro-Ford defenders before slotting the ball into the back of the net for the all-important first goal. Shortly thereafter, the Wolves knotted the score on a well-taken corner kick by Jovan Blagojevic that was flicked on by Brayden Gant and slotted home by central defender Kyle Jones. At about the 35th minute mark, Vancouver Olympics’ substitute Sasa Plavsic entered the field of play and immediately made a tremendous impact. In fact, at the 38th minute mark, Plavsic received a clever through ball from Avinesh Chandra and proceeded to score the go-ahead goal by driving a low shot into the Metro-Ford net. The goal seemed to stun the young Metro-Ford team, so much so that the Vancouver Olympics were able to add to their margin with yet another Sasa Plavsic goal just before the halftime whistle. On this occasion, Plavsic blasted a cannon of a shot from well outside the penalty area, a shot that gave goalkeeper Mat Bird no chance whatsoever. The Wolves fought back during the second half and narrowed the margin at the 55th minute mark when former Whitecap Alfredo Valente calmly slotted home a nifty pass from Sang Yoon Hwang. Much to Metro-Ford chagrin, however, the Olympics restored their 2-goal margin a few minutes later when a long, vertical ball by Avinesh Chandra was back-headed into the Metro-Ford net by none other than Sasa Plavsic as he caught an onrushing Mat Bird by surprise and thus completed his amazing hat-trick. The Wolves replied in kind at the 75th minute mark when Carlo Basso headed home a fine cross from Jovan Blagojevic to narrow the margin to 4-3. Late in regulation time, veteran Russel Huggon sent Jovan Blagojevic in on goal with a fine through ball. Blagojevic beat a few defenders on his way towards the Olympics goal and then proceeded to blast a low shot into the far corner of the net for the equalizer. It should be mentioned that the Olympics were only playing with 10 men at this time since defender Dalver Varn had left the field of play due to an injury. Regulation time ended with a 4-4 tie and the result had to be settled in overtime. Since the Olympics had made all 5 of their substitutions, they were forced to play the entire 30 minutes of overtime with only 10 players. The Wolves took advantage of the situation and scored the winning goal early in the first overtime period when Brayden Gant set up Alfredo Valente with a fine pass. Valente’s subsequent far-post shot found the back of the net for what proved to be the winning goal. Defensively, Metro-Ford’s Sang Yoon Hwang and Russel Huggon performed exceptionally well, while midfielders Brayden Gant, Alfredo Valente, and Jovan Blagojevic controlled the middle of the park during most of the game. For the Olympics, Sasa Plavsic was outstanding as he scored 3 goals and drove the young Metro-Ford defenders to distraction with his pace and skill. Also, midfielders Avinesh Chandra, Justin Isidro, and Arnel Naidu worked tirelessly during the entire match. The Wolves will now progress to the quarter-finals of the Imperial Cup where they will face defending champions Surrey United Firefighters.

ESTRELLA DE CHILE - DELTA UNITED HURRICANES 4-3 (OT): The only Sunday game was played at John Oliver Park in Delta between the heavily-favoured Delta United Hurricanes and the aspiring Division 1 contenders, Estrella de Chile. At the end of a dramatic 120 minutes of play, the visiting Chileans came away with an unbelievable 4-3 overtime victory, a result which earns them a spot in the Imperial Cup quarter-finals. The Hurricanes got off to a flying start and opened the scoring immediately after the opening whistle as Amar Mander flew down the right wing before crossing the ball onto the path of a wide-open Sarpreet Pahl who made no mistake in one-timing it into the Chilean net. Five minutes later, Delta United doubled its lead with Amar Mander once again involved in the play. On this occasion, Josh Northey’s corner-kick found a wide-open Mander who proceeded to drill and unstoppable shot past a bewildered goalkeeper, Michael Newton. The Hurricanes continued to dominate proceedings during the rest of the first half and came close to increasing their lead on a couple of occasions. However, Joti Thind’s wicked drive was brilliantly saved by Newton, while Harp Khakh’s diving header—near the end of the first half—bounced off the goal-post and out of danger. The second half told a totally different tale as Estrella de Chile—perhaps motivated by a halftime coach’s lecture—appeared to be much more energetic and pushed forward relentlessly in search of some goalscoring opportunities. The Chileans were rewarded at the 55th minute mark when Stedman Espinoza took advantage of a Delta midfield turnover and proceeded to place a picture-perfect pass to a back-tracking Habil Otieno whose subsequent square-ball found a charging Eric Ray at the top of the 18-yard line. Ray’s brilliant shot proved to be unstoppable and gave his team the badly-needed first goal. Ten minutes later, Estrella de Chile knotted the score when Delta United surrendered a corner kick after a dangerous Chilean attack. Ducivan DeSouza stepped up to the plate and delivered a pin-point cross onto the path of Habil Otieno, whose cracking header found the back of the Delta net for the equalizer. However, shortly thereafter, Delta United re-established its lead when Josh Northey cracked an amazing shot from outside the penalty area into the top corner of the net, clearly beating Michael Newton. To their credit, the Chileans fought back and scored the equalizer at about the 80th minute mark on an amazing passing play involving Tarek Yassin, Stedman Espinoza, Eric Ray, and Ducivan DeSouza. Finally, DeSouza found a wide-open Ali Malek whose well-struck shot from well outside the penalty area thundered into the back of the Delta net. Needless to say, the result had to be settled in overtime, after a 3-3 regulation time tie. Delta United tried desperately to regain the lead during the first part of overtime, coming close on efforts by Harp Khakh, Joti Thind, and Josh Northey. As luck would have it, however, it was Estrella de Chile that scored the winning goal very late in the game when Ylia Malek took advantage of a Delta defensive blunder before sending a perfect cross into the box, a cross that a streaking Habil Otieno converted into the winning goal with a brilliant header. The entire Estrella de Chile team played remarkably well against the heavily-favoured Hurricanes, but special mention should be made of former Whitecap—and Cameroon national team player—Narcisse Tchoumi who was a tower of strength in his central defence position. As well, midfielders Stedman Espinoza, Ducivan DeSouza, Eric Ray, and Ylia Malek worked tirelessly throughout the entire 120 minutes. Goalkeeper Michael Newton returned to action after a 6 months’ absence—due to a knee injury—and played extremely well. Despite the loss, Delta’s forwards Amar Mander, Josh Northey, and Harp Khakh were dangerous all game long as they drove the Chilean defenders to distraction with their pace and skills. Estrella de Chile will now face another powerful Premier Division team—ICST Pegasus—in the next round of the Imperial Cup.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: ESTRELLA de CHILE for its incredible performance in upsetting the heavily-favoured Delta United Hurricanes by a 4-3 overtime margin. Led by the extraordinary performances of central defender Narcisse Tchoumi, as well as midfielders Stedman Espinoza, Ducivan DeSouza, Eric Ray, and Ylia Malek, the Chileans had to come back from an early 2-0 deficit to secure the hard-earned victory.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Vancouver Olympics’ attacking midfielder SASA PLAVSIC for his amazing 3-goal performance against the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves. Plavsic came on as a substitute late in the first half and immediately made a huge impact by scoring two excellent goals before the half-time whistle. Plavsic continued his excellent performance in the second half and added a third goal to complete his hat-trick. For his outstanding performance this past week, SASA PLAVSIC will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2012-03-06.

IMPERIAL CUP – QUARTER FINALS

WEST VAN FC - AKAL FC 3-0: On Friday evening, at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver, the highly-favoured West Van FC easily defeated the visiting Akal FC by a 3-0 margin, thus eliminating the Division 1 team from any further Imperial Cup play. Needless to say, the former Trollers controlled the vast majority of the action and could have won by an even more elaborate margin had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Akal’s Nuno Jesus. After a scoreless first half, West Van FC took the lead early in the second half when Mike Winter finished off an immaculate cross by Drew Gelley with a right-foot volley from just inside the penalty area. Akal FC came close to knotting the score immediately thereafter when Pavi Dhaliwal barely missed the net after having raced in on goal on a partial breakaway. However—at about the 55th minute mark—it was West Van FC that increased its lead when Ryan Glanville made a great run down the left wing, beat two Akal defenders, and proceeded to cross the ball to an unmarked Jesse Fetterley who finished off the play from close range. To their credit, the visitors did not give up and came close to narrowing the margin on a fine effort by Harjot Mundi, but his shot sailed just wide of the target. At the 65th minute mark, West Van FC completed the scoring when a patented Paul Dailly corner kick was cleared to the top of the 18-yard line by defender Raj Chohan, only to have Mike Winter set up Leo Nash for a wicked one-timer. However, Nash’s shot was blocked by defender Surinder Janda and was subsequently fired home from close range by Ryan Glanville. Defensively, West Van’s Max Baessato, Leo Nash, Tim Perry, and Drew Gelley were rock-solid throughout the contest, as they made life relatively easy for goalkeeper Marco Durante as he recorded yet another clean-sheet. Midfielders Paul Dailly and Mike Winter controlled the middle of the park for the home team, while forwards Ryan Glanville and Jesse Fetterley worked hard during the entire 90 minutes and drove the Akal defenders to distraction with their skillful and aggressive play. For Akal FC, goalkeeper Nuno Jesus was outstanding as he made numerous saves to keep the scoreline somewhat respectable, while defenders Raj Chohan, Surinder Janda, and Harb Chohan also played extremely well in a losing cause. West Van FC will now face the upstart Richmond FC Hibernians in the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup.

ICST PEGASUS - ESTRELLA DE CHILE 3-2: Also on Friday evening, at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, the Premier Division leaders—ICST Pegasus—edged the visiting Division 1 Estrella de Chile by a narrow, and hard-fought, 3-2 margin. After having upset Delta United the previous week, the Chileans obviously felt rather comfortable in facing the defending Provincial Cup champions. In fact, the visitors got off to a great start and almost took the early lead when Habil Otieno unleashed a wicked shot from the edge of the penalty area, only to have Pegasus’ goalkeeper Amar Dhinsa pull off a sensational save. At the 8th minute mark, however, ICST Pegasus took the lead on a well-taken penalty kick by Niko Marcina, after Azad Palani had been fouled inside the penalty area by Noah Acosta. It should be mentioned that Palani was sent on a partial breakaway by Reynold Stewart’s great pass. About 10 minutes later, Estrella de Chile knotted the score when Habil Otieno made amends for his previous missed chance by chipping the ball over a charging Pegasus goalkeeper—Amar Dhinsa. The play had started with some fine passing among Stedman Espinoza, Ricardo Alvarado, and Eric Ray. The Pegasus lads regained the lead at the 35th minute mark after a well-worked set piece at the edge of the Chilean penalty area, involving Niko Marcina and Chetan Jhooty. Jhooty’s finished off the play with a powerful shot, a shot that was deflected into the net by Gurj Dhaliwal. Late in the first half, Niko Marcina almost scored Pegasus’ third goal but his wicked free-kick shot from the edge of the penalty area bounced off the crossbar and out of danger. The Chileans bounced back and knotted the score early in the second half with a brilliant passing play involving Tarek Yassin, Ilya Malek, Stedman Espinoza, Ricardo Alvarado, and Eric Ray. In the end, Ray’s clever pass to second half substitute Murtada Almatrood was calmly chipped into the back of the net from the top of the 18-yard box. At the 70th minute mark, however, ICST Pegasus regained the lead after Chetan Jhooty had done some masterful dribbling on the right flank, beating two Chilean defenders before crossing the ball to an unmarked Reynold Stewart who made no mistake in scoring the winning goal from close range. Five minutes later, Estrella de Chile came very close to tying things up but Murtada Almatrood missed the top corner of the net with a wicked, curling shot. Soon thereafter, it was Habil Otieno’s turn to miss a glorious opportunity to knot the score, after having been sent flying towards the Pegasus net by Eric Ray. At the other end of the pitch, ICST Pegasus also came close to increasing its lead but efforts by young Javid Khan and Diaz Kambere barely missed the net. Despite the loss, midfielders Stedman Espionoza and Eric Ray—as well as central defender Narcisse Tchoumi—played extremely well for Estrella de Chile. For ICST Pegasus, midfielders Niko Marcina, Chetan Jhooty, and Adam Costley dictated the pace of the match in their usual fashion, while defender Diaz Kambere was once again rock-solid. Pegasus will not play the winner of the postponed Surrey United – Metro-Ford Wolves match in the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - COLUMBUS FC 2-0: On Saturday, at Trillium Park in Vancouver, the visiting Richmond Hibernians knocked the heavily-favoured Columbus FC out of the Imperial Cup competition by defeating the hosts by a 2-0 margin. The Hibernians got off to a good start and created a few excellent goalscoring chances in the early going, but efforts by Mike Revell, Darren Prentice, and Brad Caldwell went awry. At the other end of the pitch, Columbus’ Kazunori Kikuchi tried to convert a fine cross by Jevin Hillis, but his shot just grazed the outsize of the post. At the 30th minute mark, the Hibernians took the lead when Peter Chivers hammered a wicked free-kick towards the Columbus goal, a free-kick that was inadvertently deflected into the back of the net by Columbus defender Devon Greenside. Five minutes later, Richmond FC scored the insurance marker when Brad Caldwell set up Darren Prentice with a fantastic through ball. Prentice then proceeded to fire a cracking shot into the Columbus’ net for Richmond’s second goal. To their credit, the ‘Italians’ pressed hard in the second half in search of their all-important first goal. Richmond FC, on the other hand, seemed satisfied to defend and counter-attack, a strategy that proved to be successful. Just before the final whistle, Richmond’s goalkeeper—Luke O’Shea—pulled off a miraculous ‘double-save’ as he dove to his left to thwart Donald Kambere’s shot, and then flung himself across the goal-line to save Kazunori Kikuchi’s shot after he had picked up the rebound. Led by extraordinary performances on the part of defenders Mike Revell, Stu Walters, Marcus Brougham, and Rory Gattens, the Hibernians were able to keep the vaunted Columbus attackers off the scoresheet. As well, goalkeeper Luke O’Shea made a couple of terrific saves in the late stages to preserve his clean-sheet. Richmond midfielders Geoff Salt and Peter Chivers played extremely well in a winning cause, while Columbus’ Steve DeBlasio and Kozo Manome also turned in strong performances. As a result of the hard-earned victory, the Richmond Hibernians will now take on West Van FC in the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup.

PREMIER DIVISION – MAKE-UP GAMES

ICSF INTER - ROVERS UNITED 1-1: On Saturday, at Trillium Park in Vancouver, two teams desperate for points—ICSF Inter and Rovers United—faced off in a very important ‘relegation-avoidance’ match. At the end of the day, however, the two teams had to settle for a rather disappointing 1-1 tie, a result that helps the Rovers more than Inter. The Rovers dictated the pace of the match during the entire 90 minutes, and in particular in the second half after ICSF Inter had been reduced to 10 players. However, the visitors’ numerous scoring opportunities went awry and allowed the short-handed ‘Italians’ to capture the single point. Near the end of the first half, veteran Inter defender Mike Tempesta was sent off for having committed a violent conduct infraction, thus reducing his team to 10 men for the entire second half. Despite being a man short, however, ICSF Inter opened the scoring at the 65th minute mark when young veteran Joseph Marrello headed home an excellent cross by Rey Ismail. Ten minutes later—at the 75th minute mark—Gibson Bardsley made amends for having missed several glorious goalscoring opportunities by netting a magnificent goal on a spectacular individual effort. In fact, Bardsley beat 3 Inter defenders inside the penalty area before blasting the ball into the net from close range. Late in the match, Bardsley could easily have become the hero of the match when he controlled a clever flick-on by Helge Helguson-Neumann but mishit the ball from inside the goal area. Bobby Jhutty and Desmond Tachie were dangerous throughout the game down their respective flanks, causing the Inter defenders a lot of grief. Defensively, Helge Helguson-Neumann, Joel Malouf, and Mike Buikema were rock-solid, allowing ICSF Inter very few goalscoring chances. The Rovers’ midfielder Rob Sing and forward Gibson Bardsley also played very well, albeit in a disappointing result. For ICSF Inter, newly-signed defender Scott Spracklin and midfielder Joseph Marrello deserve special mention for having worked hard throughout the match. As mentioned earlier, the tie does not help the ‘Italians’ in their quest to avoid relegation since Inter remains in 10th place with 15 points, only 4 points ahead of Norvan Pacific, a team that has 2 games in hand. Rovers United, on the other hand, remains in 9th place, with 19 points from 18 games.

CROATIA SC - DELTA UNITED HURRICANES 3-2: On Sunday evening, at Burnaby Lake West, the hot-and-cold Croatia SC remained in contention for a spot in the Provincial Cup playdowns by edging the visiting Delta United Hurricanes by a narrow 3-2 margin. The Hurricanes came flying out of the starting gate and controlled virtually the entire first half with some extended ball possession and by creating several goalscoring chances. In particular, very early in the game, efforts by Delta’s Josh Northey and Joti Thind were brilliantly saved by Croatia’s veteran goalkeeper, Didar Sandhu. However, at the 35th minute mark, Delta United took the lead when Danny Badesha converted a penalty kick into the game’s first goal. The spot shot was awarded when Delta’s Josh Northey was fouled inside the penalty area by Croatia’s Robin Hart. Near the end of the first half, the Hurricanes almost doubled their lead, but Josh Northey’s one-timer sailed just over the crossbar and out of danger. However, early in the second half, Josh Northey’s hard work paid off as he raced down the right flank, beat a couple of Croatian defenders, and proceeded to cross the ball to a wide-open Joti Thind who had no difficulty whatsoever in scoring Delta’s second goal. At this point, for no apparent reason, the Hurricanes went into a ‘sleep mode’ and allowed the Croatians an opportunity to get back into the match. In fact, at the 60th minute mark, Matteo Agnoloni set up former professional Johnny Sulentic with an excellent pass. In his own inimitable way, Sulentic controlled the ball and struck a low drive into the back of the Delta net. Ten minutes later, Croatia SC knotted the score, this time with Johnny Sulentic being the provider as his well-taken corner kick was headed home by Chris Craveiro. The Croatians continued to press in search of the winning goal and came close to accomplishing their feat at the 85th minute mark when Ante Krapic set up Lucas Sweda with an excellent square ball across the 18-yard line. Unfortunately for Sweda, his shot went agonizingly high over the bar. However. just before the full-time whistle, Sweda made amends for his previous faux-pas when he received an excellent pass from none other than Johnny Sulentic, flicked the ball over a Delta defender, and finished off the play with an unstoppable shot. Defensively, Robin Hart and Matteo Agnoloni played extremely well for Croatia SC, while forward Johnny Sulentic turned in yet another brilliant performance. For Delta United, forward Josh Northey was a going concern during the entire match, while midfielder Ryan Dhillon also played extremely well, albeit in a losing cause. Croatia SC thus improves its record to 7-3-9, good for 7th place in the Premier Division standings, while Delta United remains in 5th place, with 28 points from 18 games.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS for their upset 2-0 victory over Columbus FC in an Imperial Cup quarter-final match. Led by the outstanding play of defenders Mike Revell, Stu Walters, Rory Gattens, and Marcus Broughham, as well as some brilliant goalkeeping on the part of Luke O’Shea, the Hibernians held the very talented ‘Italians’ off the scoresheet for the entire 90 minutes. As a result of the hard-earned victory, Richmond FC will now advance to the Imperial Cup semi-finals were they will face West Van FC.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Richmond FC Hibernians’ goalkeeper LUKE O’SHEA for his incredible performance in his team 2-0 upset victory over the highly-rated Columbus FC. O’Shea made numerous excellent saves throughout the contest and an unbelievable ‘double-save’ near the end of the match to preserve the victory and shut-out. For his outstanding performance this past week, LUKE O’SHEA will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2012-03-13.

IMPERIAL CUP – QUARTER FINALS

SURREY UNITED FIREFIGHTERS - COQUITLAM METRO-FORD WOLVES 2-0: On Wednesday evening, at Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey, the highly-favoured Surrey United Firefighters disposed of the visiting Metro-Ford Wolves by a 2-0 margin, thus advancing to the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup. The first half was quite evenly played, although Surrey United created the better chances. In particular, at the 10th minute mark, Angus Burke missed a great opportunity when—after having received a great pass from Andrew Proctor—he waltzed in on goal and barely missed the net from close range. Then, at the 20th minute mark, Proctor and Burke were once again in the picture as they were both thwarted by a couple of excellent saves on the part of Metro-Ford goalkeeper Mat Bird. Early in the second half, it was the Wolves’ turn to come close to scoring the game’s first goal when Alfredo Valente whipped a hard cross into the Surrey United goal area. The ball was palmed down by goalkeeper Paul Shepherd onto the path of Sang Yoon Hwang who proceeded to inexplicably miss the net from inside the goal area. The Firefighters took the lead at the 60th minute mark when former Whitecap Steve Kindel sent a very dangerous corner kick into the Metro-Ford 6-yard box, a cross that was brilliantly cleared by goalkeeper Mat Bird. Unfortunately for Bird—and the rest of the Metro-Ford clan—Ryan Reynolds picked up the rebound and curled the ball into the top corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area. Ten minutes later, playing-coach Niall Thompson flicked a Steve Kindel pass onto the path of Ryan Reynolds who finished off the play with an excellent shot into the top corner of the Metro-Ford net for the insurance marker. The Wolves bounced back in a desperate effort to get back into the game and almost narrowed the margin when Alfredo Valente had his cracking shot saved by Paul Shepherd. Near the end of the match, Valente and Russel Huggon had their shots bounce off the goalpost, thus keeping the score at 2-0 for Surrey United till the final whistle. As a result of the hard-earned victory, the Firefighters now advance to the semi-finals of the Imperial Cup where they will face arch-rivals ICST Pegasus in what could be called the ‘Surrey Derby’.

PREMIER DIVISION – MAKE-UP GAMES

NORVAN PACIFIC - WESTSIDE FC 1-0: On Tuesday, February 21, at William Griffin Park in North Vancouver, Norvan Pacific snapped out of its 8-game losing streak by defeating the visiting Westside FC by a narrow 1-0 margin. Both teams were very aware of the importance of the game and, as a result, the match was very intense from start to finish. Despite the fact that the Westsiders had most of the ball possession during the first half, it was the home team that created the better chances. In fact, on two occasions, Norvan Pacific was denied what would have been to go-ahead goal on shots by Matt Hartwell and Sean Regan, but the woodwork—as well as goalkeeper Rowan Anders—got in the way and kept the game scoreless until the 25th minute mark. At this point, a fine cross by Blake Burgon was redirected into the net by Sean Regan from inside the 6-yard box. At the other end of the pitch, Westside FC also came close to scoring, but forward Nick Graham missed the net on a clear-cut opportunity. The second half belonged almost entirely to the Westsiders as they threw caution to the wind in an effort to knot the score. However, some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Giancarlo Martino kept the score at 1-0 in Norvan’s favour till the final whistle. In particular, a long-range strike by Reece Branion—destined for the top corner—was tipped over the bar by Martino. Also, efforts by Peter Bow, Michael Buree, Nick Graham, and Ben Elliott was thwarted by the Norvan goalkeeper in amazing fashion. It should also be mentioned that Norvan Pacific also came close to scoring what would have been the insurance marker on a couple of occasions on ‘semi-lethal’ counter-attacks. However, efforts by Matt Hartwell and Blake Burgon were well-saved by Rowan Anders. Defensively, Brent Dodge was rock-solid on the Norvan Pacific backline, while goalkeeper Giancarlo Martino had to be at the top of his game throughout the entire match, and especially during the second half. For Westside FC, defenders Ben Elliott and Jon Wou—as well as forward Peter Bow—deserve special mention for their excellent performances. The devastating loss pretty well puts an end to Westside’s hopes of avoiding relegation, while Norvan Pacific keeps its chances of remaining in the Premier Division alive by having walked away with all 3 points.

RICHMOND FC HIBERNIANS - ROVERS UNITED 3-0: On Saturday, at Minoru Oval in Richmond, the Richmond FC Hibernians disposed of the visiting Rovers United by a clear-cut 3-0 margin. As the score would indicate, the game was very one-sided as the home team dominated virtually every aspect. The Hibernians almost took the lead very early in the match when midfielder Cam Stokes took advantage of a Rovers’ defensive blunder and raced in on goal on a breakaway. However, Stokes’ final shot barely missed the net. Shortly thereafter, some excellent passing among Alex Orasa, Alan Chivers, and Erik Olsen led to Geoff Salt volleying the ball towards the Rovers’ net from the top of the penalty area. Unfortunately for the Hibernians, Salt’s vicious strike was blocked by defender Brody Phillips. Then, at the 17th minute mark, a brilliantly-struck free kick by Alan Chivers curled around the Rovers’ wall but was phenomenally saved by goalkeeper Garth Lagasse. However, the Hibs were finally rewarded for their constant pressure at the 23rd minute mark when Peter Chivers stripped the ball from a Rovers’ defender and proceeded to slip an immaculate through ball to Cam Stokes who had no difficulty whatsoever in finishing off the play with a clinical shot. Shortly thereafter, Richmond’s right fullback—Marcus Brougham—went on a fantastic run down the right flank before cutting in and unleashing a thunderous shot that was subsequently well-saved by Lagasse. The Hibernians continued to control the flow of the game and were rewarded at the 40th minute mark on a remarkable play involving Erik Olsen, Peter Chivers, and Alex Orasa. Chivers once again won a battle in the middle of the park, held off 3 opponents, and sent fellow midfielder Alex Orasa on a great run. Orasa proceeded to beat a couple of Rovers defenders before playing an exquisite ball through the Rovers’ backline onto the path of Erik Olsen. Olsen latched on to the ball and cleverly chipped it over an onrushing Lagasse for the insurance marker. Early in the second half, Olsen nearly repeated his earlier feat, but this time his chip-shot sailed just over the net. Then, at the 70th minute mark, Olsen scored his second goal of the contest when he clinically finished off a brilliant over-lapping run by Marcus Brougham. Late in the match, second-half substitute Mark Sammarco came close to adding to Richmond’s margin of victory but was stymied by a couple of fine saves on the part of Garth Lagasse. Midfielders Alex Orasa and Peter Chivers played extremely well for the Hibernians, while forward Erik Olsen and defender Marcus Brougham also performed admirably in a winning cause. Goalkeeper Garth Lagasse and midfielder Rob Sing also turned in excellent performances for the struggling Rovers United. The victory improves Richmond FC’s chances of qualifying for the Provincial Cup playdowns as they now sit in 8th place, with an even 6-5-6 record. Rovers United, on the other hand, remain in 9th place with only 19 points from 19 games.

CROATIA SC - ICSF INTER 4-0: Also on Saturday, at Trillium Park in Vancouver, Croatia SC climbed into sole possession of 6th place by defeating the struggling ICSF Inter by an elaborate 4-0 margin. Despite the emphatic scoreline, the game was evenly-played and heavily-contested. The Croatians opened the scoring at the 25th minute mark when Johnny Sulentic whipped a cross into the penalty area where an unmarked Darko Jelic calmly slotted the ball into the back of the Inter net from close range. Ten minutes later, Croatia SC almost doubled its lead on a couple of efforts by Cristian Tropeano—both brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Dennis Kindel. Early in the second half, ICSF Inter almost tied things up but Croatia’s goalkeeper—Didar Sandhu—rose to the occasion and pulled off two semi-miraculous saves on shots by Brian VanSchagen and Sheldon Maistry. As luck would have it, however, it was Croatia SC that managed to score what proved to the insurance marker when—at the 60th minute mark—Cristian Tropeano raced in on the Inter goal on a quick counter-attack before blasting a shot towards the Inter goal, a shot that was deflected into the net by ICSF defender Jesse Dhami. ICSF Inter bounced back and came close to narrowing the margin when a wicked Brian VanSchagen free kick was brilliantly saved by Didar Sandhu. Shortly thereafter, VanSchagen was sent in on goal on a clever pass by Massimo Beninteso, only to have Sandhu pull off yet another incredible save. At the 75th minute mark, Croatia SC added its third goal when young Kreso Ukalovic raced down the left flank, beat a couple of Inter defenders, and delivered a picture-perfect pass to the feet of former Whitecap Jason Jordan, who subsequently tapped the ball into the back of the empty net. Very late in the match, Kreso Ukalovic became the finisher as he converted a clever pass from Philip Kotter into Croatia’s fourth goal. The victory elevates Croatia SC to 6th place in the Premier Division standings, with a record of 8-3-9, while ICSF Inter is now in penultimate place with only 15 points from 20 games.

ICST PEGASUS - WESTSIDE FC 3-1: The third Saturday game was played at South Memorial Park in Vancouver and featured the first-place ICST Pegasus and the last-place Westside FC. Needless to say, the Surrey-based team practically put the last nail in the Westsiders coffin by defeating the home team by a 3-1 margin. Very early in the contest, Pegasus’ Azad Palani had a golden opportunity to open the scoring after having been set up by Reynold Stewart. Unfortunately for Palani, his close-range shot was saved brilliantly by Westside’s goalkeeper Rowan Anders. Shortly thereafter, it was Reynold Stewart’s turn to miss another great chance to score the opening goal as he fired his shot wide of the Westside net after racing in on goal on a partial breakaway. Finally, at the 30th minute mark, Reynold Stewart was able to open the scoring for ICST Pegasus after Jag Gill had sent him on a breakaway with a magnificent pass. Stewart proceeded to ‘toe-poke’ the ball into the corner of the goal, giving Rowan Anders no chance whatsoever. Early in the second half, Pegasus came close to doubling its lead on a couple of occasions but a great effort by Azad Palani was once again brilliantly saved by Rowan Anders, while Reynold Stewart fired his shot wide of the net after having raced in on goal on yet another breakaway. The home team bounced back and knotted the score at about the 60th minute mark when Brian Reems beat a couple of Pegasus defenders before slotting a left-footed shot just inside the post. However, at the 65th minute mark, Stewart made amends for his earlier missed opportunities as he scored what proved to be Pegasus’ winning goal when he got on the end of a loose ball at the edge of the penalty area and proceeded to fire a wonderful, left-foot shot into the top corner of the Westside net. Reynold Stewart then completed his hat-trick at the 70th minute mark, this time finishing off a brilliant passing play between Andrew Reed and Jag Gill. Late in the match, young Javid Khan made a tremendous run towards the Westside goal before firing a thunderous, long-range shot, a shot that seemed destined for the back of the net. However, Rowan Anders once again came up with a magnificent save to keep the score at 3-1 till the final whistle. Needless to say, Reynold Stewart turned in a superb performance, not only because he scored all 3 Pegasus goals, but also because he drove the Westside defenders to distraction with his pace, skill, and determination. Full-back Andrew Reed and midfielders Javid Khan and Jag Gill also played extremely well in a winning cause. Needless to say, Westside’s goalkeeper Rowan Anders played remarkably well throughout the contest as he kept the scoreline somewhat respectable with some phenomenal saves. Defender Christoph Barrow and forward Brian Reems worked hard throughout the match, albeit in a losing effort. Pegasus’ victory solidifies its hold on first place, with an enviable 13-5-2 record while Westside FC remains in last place with only 9 points from 19 games and now needs a major miracle to get out of the abyss and avoid relegation.

NORVAN PACIFIC - WEST VAN FC 1-0: The fourth, and final, Saturday game was played at Ambleside Park between two North Shore teams: the aspiring West Van FC and the revitalized Norvan Pacific. In what could be described as the ‘upset of the season’, the visiting Norvan team edged the former Trollers by a narrow, but well-earned, 1-0 margin. The match was very important to both teams, but for totally different reasons as West Van FC is still in the running for first place in the Premier Division standings, while Norvan Pacific is trying desperately to avoid relegation the Division 1. The visiting Norvan team used a very wise defensive strategy and relied on counter-attacks for most of the game, a tactic that proved to be very successful. The lone goal of the match came at the 15th minute mark when Norvan’s Blake Burgon won the ball on the left flank, cut inside and played a great give-and-go with Jamie Dunnett. After having received the ball back from Dunnett, Burgon fired an unspoppable shot into the bottom corner of the net, thus scoring the lone goal of the match. Stung by the first goal, West Van FC mounted a number of attacks on the Norvan goal during the remainder of the first half but some solid defending on the part of Brent Dodge and Tony Paiero kept the vaunted West Van attackers at bay. The second half was more or less a repeat of the first as West Van FC had most of the ball possession and created numerous goalscoring opportunities. Once again, however, the Norvan resilient defenders—coupled by some excellent goalkeeping on the part of Richard Goddard—kept the score at 1-0 till the final whistle. At the other end of the pitch—mostly on counter-attacks—Norvan Pacific also came close to scoring on a few occasions, but breakaway efforts by Matt Hartwell and Blake Burgon went awry. As mentioned earlier, defenders Brent Dodge and Tony Paiero were rock-solid on the Norvan backline, while goalkeeper Richard Goddard fully earned his clean-sheet with some outstanding saves. Forward Blake Burgon was inspirational as he led his team to victory with a brilliant performance. For West Van FC, Under-21 call-ups Stefan Crameri and Tristan Wallis-Mayer came off the bench and gave their team some much needed energy in the second half, while midfielder Bruno Texieria worked tirelessly throughout the match. The all-important victory elevates Norvan Pacific out of the dreaded relegation zone, two points ahead of ICSF Inter. West Van FC, on the other hand, drops 4 points behind league-leading ICST Pegasus in the battle for first place.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: NORVAN PACIFIC for its unbelievable 1-0 victory over the heavily-favoured West Van FC in the ‘North Shore Derby’. Led by the brilliant performance of left-winger Blake Burgon—as well as the gritty efforts of defenders Brent Dodge and Tony Paiero—Norvan Pacific worked incredibly hard throughout the match in order to achieve the almost impossible goal: an upset victory over the second place West Van FC.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ICST Pegasus’ young forward REYNOLD STEWART for his amazing hat-trick performance in his team’s 3-1 victory over Westside FC. All 3 of Stewart’s goal were things of beauty as he demonstrated an incredible level of skill and finishing prowess. In fact, Stewart could easily have scored a few more goals had it not been for some sensational goalkeeping on the part of Westside’s Rowan Anders! For his outstanding performance this past week, REYNOLD STEWART will receive a prize of a pizza for two, compliments of THE GOLDEN BOOT CAFFE`. The prize is available up to 2012-03-20.
