The Canadian men's national team will be right back on the pitch next week at the Concacaf Gold Cup, and on Monday Canada Soccer announced the final 23-man squad that John Herdman will have at his disposal. In total, 16 players are returning from the roster for this past week's Concacaf Nations League Finals, with familiar faces like Milan Borjan, Steven Vitória, Stephen Eustáquio and Jonathan Osorio remaining with the team for this tournament. Joining the squad for the Gold Cup are a handful of players based both in Major League Soccer and overseas, including Portland Timbers centre-back Zachary McGraw, Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Ali Ahmed and Columbus Crew attacker Jacen Russell-Rowe, all of whom received their first ever senior national team call-up. Several of the team's major Europe-based stars are not going to the Gold Cup, needing a rest after very long club seasons, as Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David and Cyle Larin among others will take a break. So, this tournament may offer an opportunity for some younger players to get their first minutes for the national team -- including, potentially, former Canadian Premier League standouts Dominick Zator and Victor Loturi. Canada's Gold Cup campaign kicks off on Tuesday, June 27, when they open their Group D campaign at Toronto's BMO Field against the winner of a preliminary qualification match (either Guyana or Guadeloupe). After that, they'll continue the group stage with a match against Guatemala on Canada Day, followed by a final group fixture against Cuba on July 4 -- with both of those games being played in Houston, Texas at Shell Energy Stadium. Les Rouges will have their sights set on lifting the Gold Cup for the first time since 2000, particularly after a disappointing end to their Nations League campaign with a 2-0 loss in the final to the United States on Sunday.
