Last week, we took it upon ourselves to judge the judges. Going through the Canadian Premier League’s official add-on to Football Manager 20, we analyzed and criticized player profiles we found. Most of our takes are objective, of course, but it's worth an argument. We discovered overrated international players and a few questionable values. This week, we thought we’d direct our attention to the Canadian men’s team. Let’s take a look at how FM20’s worldwide network of real-world scouts evaluated some of Canada’s best. To clarify: Football Manager’s attribute system runs from 1-20, with the world’s best players boasting individual stats such as "Pace" or "Finishing" in the high teens or even 20. Jonathan David

Which wonderkid will be better: Jonathan David or Alphonso Davies? Peeking behind the game’s curtain, we see David has a higher potential than Davies. While it’s not a competition, it’s intriguing to see Davies, who has peaked earlier than his Canadian wonderkid counterpart, with a lower ceiling.
Stephen Eustáquio

Looking at his numbers, the 23-year-old could easily be considered Canada’s best midfielder in FM20. A brutal knee ligament injury derailed his 2019, so we have to wonder if he should be that much better than Samuel Piette or even Atiba Hutchinson in-game. Still, a 15 rating in Passing, great Mental stats, and sold Physical acumen is of great use to managers selecting Canada in this year’s game.
Lucas Cavallini

Ah! "El Tanque" lives up to the name here. Cavallini’s Heading and Strength skills are better than most top CONCACAF centre backs. That’s accurate, considering the Vancouver Whitecaps forward’s 16-month run with the national team, although, we have an issue with his low Flair rating.
Jonathan Osorio

Toronto FC fans recognize Osorio as one of the best possession-holding midfielders in MLS. His niftiness on the ball has been a major asset for over seven years at BMO Field. But I don’t see this ability reflected in his attribute set in FM20. Standard values in things like First Touch, Passing, Flair and Vision sells Osorio short, dropping him down Canada’s in-game depth chart and well out of a starting role.
Scott Arfield

Doesn’t this just scream "direct, Scottish-Canadian attacking midfielder"? Scott Arfield is perfectly reflected in this virtual adaptation, giving high values to his technical ability and attacking know-how. His underrated finishing ability is also recognized.
Alphonso Davies

So, is Alphonso Davies the fastest player in World Football? Is he close? Is so, these speed stats fail him miserably. His Acceleration and Pace combination is more comparable to Shane Long, Timo Werner, or Anthony Martial than Kylian Mbappé or even American counterpart DeAndre Yedlin. That has to be rectified for FM21, especially in a post Davies-destroying-Chelsea world.
