I AM CANADIAN!

Regs,

Maybe you should change the topic to "Am I Canadian?", or better yet, "Another thread completely bastardized by Dude".

I'm sure you Know who Gandi is and Elvis is

Cainy, I'll just assume you had too much beer by the time you made that comment. I still don't really know (or care:D ) who George Best was, but he should not be mentioned in the same breath as Gandhi. Now Gretzky...

Guru, i happen to know a mate who was born on HOLIDAY in Canada, returned to Britain and has never been back since. According to you and Dude, he must be Canadian as he was born here. Surely not, considering he was only in the country for a few days! You tell me. There must be countless other cases like this.

Yes. These people make up the same percentage of the total number of people born here that a pimple takes up on an elephant's ass.

You keep making some loosing points in our argument, Hibee. Now you have two things to be jealous about.

Georgie

has a pretty good resume and played with won titles and fukced most Miss Universes in the 70's, good lad. He has even got a couple of UK bands who have albums directly dedicated to him. Booze got the best of him but was a great talent and can still walk into Old Trafford and be treated like a King. Not saying he is the best player of all time but if you ask even Pele he will say George was one of the best if not the best UK player ever. Quoted in Best's biography. Cheers:)

Dude, do you mean i make losing points or am i making "loosing" points as you suggest. If it's the latter i'm not sure i understand as quite frankly, it doesn't make sence:D. Now YOU have two things to be jealous about.

And for the record, this is not an argument mate, it's a debate.

George Best once played in the Nations Cup out in Richmond and was sent off (resulting in no further part in the tournament)after reacting to the ill treatment being dished out by those less talented. Hockey players challenges i would assume:D

George Best once played in the Nations Cup

Hibee,

George Best didn't actually play in the Nations Cup. Club Ireland brought him over in 1984(I believe) and he played in an exhibition game against the Pacific Coast League All-Stars. One fellow already had a chop at him earlier in the match and when he did it again, Mr. Best decided to cup his throat with his two hands. Of course, with about 1500 people watching at the Hugh Boyd Oval, the ref couldn't throw him out. He ended up scoring a penalty and the score ended up tied(I think). A great experience nonetheless.

Look up "Debate" in the dictionary. What does it say?

Of course, I meant "losing", not loosing! Not the first time that one has come back to bite me...

DOH!

The only thing for certain is you and I spend way too much time on our computers. 8:30 AM on Saturday? I was printing up our team list for a tourney today. What's your excuse?

I guess we'll have to continue our argument at NAP on Sunday. Look for the incoherent hockey player, leaning over the balcony, singing dumb songs that don't rhyme. I'll be the guy next to him...;)

WTF is going on around this thread??? I am a very proud Canadian who was born here, lived in Belfast and hold two passports... Being born here makes me Canadian (so dude and guru say) thanks... anyway my point is we all live in the best country in the world... what makes it so is because of our beautiful landscape and cultural diversity...
However, I also love to travel to other countries and use my BRITISH passport!!! Am I a traitor??? Fcuk I could careless what anyone else thinks, but I am proud of where my family came from and the choice they made to immigrate here...
Wayne Gretzky is a god!!!
George Best was the greatest talent the game of football has ever seen!!! Unlike Gretzky, his country wasn't such the world power in their chosen sport, hence Pele is comparative because he is Brazilian...
Georgie the Belfast boy dealt his own cards and has payed dearly for this, off the pitch he wasn't too smart (although he had all the ladies)...Wayne is a class act and an icon in Canada on and off the ice... This does not smear the fact that Besty today is more recognized around the world than Wayner was or ever will be!!!

I am CANADIAN (I think) ;)

Besty's tournament

Actually, that tournament in Richmond was created around George Best. It might have even been called the George Best tournament or something.

He actually played at least 45 minutes for every team in the tournament. I think it was in 84 or 85. He was pretty old and slow, but he didn't want you to get the ball, you didn't get it.

I was playing for Metro-Ford at the time and we made the final. He played half for us and half for the team we played against. Unfortunately, he played the second half for us and was spent.

My claim to fame: In the final, I intercepted one of his passes, walked in and scored. In the second half, he walked up to me and told me that it was the goal of the tournament.

Monkeys like to toot their own horns.

shock...

I can't believe George Best isn't Welsh. I swear he grew up in a small mining village in Pembrokeshire. The one Richard Burton and Anthony Hopkins came from.

Are we talking about the same fella?

Confused? ... not remotely!! I fly the Italian flag in memory of my grandfather. As for me, I couldn't care less where anyone was born. I am not a big fan of the nationality thing.

Dude, where's Guru's Passport

Here's a tricky one for you:

I was born on a Qantas Airlines flight, stopping over in Hawaii. My mother was an Italian pornstar, and I was conceived during a particularily tricky scene involving a german midget, two dutchmen, a one-legged spanish lesbien and a french poodle.

What does that make me?

I'll tell you....FCUKING UGLY. So, obviously, I must be mostly Italian. At least that would explain the hairy back and predisposition to buggery.

Now if I may have the attention of the Fisher Price "My First Debating Society" club members, I just have a few comments to add:

(1). Move out of your parents' basements and see the world. Spending three pages worth of postings on when and how one is a Canadian citizen is really just plain pathetic. I'd also like to complain about some poster's despicable bastardization of the English language in written form. Ever heard of spellcheck, you illiterate sods. Don't make me get out my red pen.

(2). Perhaps I can provide some elucidation unto this George Best vs. Wayne Gretzky worldwide recognition codswallop which is taking over all our lives. I recall a similar argument years ago between my good friend fasthow and a particularily annoying American girl, and I believe he put things in perspective by simply stating that Soccer/Football is played in almost every country in the world, and thus is by far globally more popular than Ice Hockey, which is, in my esteemed opinion, an excellent sport, don't get me wrong.

Soccer is bigger than Baseball or American Football or Blacketball or any other daft American sport, so it stands to reason that if most of the world follows soccer, then it is quite likely that a George Best would be better known that a Wayne Gretzky, by and large. It's simple fckuing arithmetic, chums.

BTW, I'm not really Italian. I just take the piss out of them. Regs, can I have a Cross of Saint George flag next to my name please. I'm feeling left out.

First of all, that was a hilarious post :D. What I really want to know is: why would they let a French poodle into the general seating area? I thought they had to travel in a cage down below? Also, is a French poodle different than a Canadian poodle? Confused…

I originally had a go at someone (can’t recall who) for having a go at Housearrest because “he didn’t know who George Best was”. The fact is, I didn’t really either. I knew he was an old guy who was apparently a pretty good soccer player in his time. Probably because I grew up a Canadian kid addicted to playing soccer, but addicted to following hockey. No, I’m not ashamed of that. You’d be surprised how many guys on all teams (Premier on down) who aren’t actually soccer fans! Shocking, I know! You guys all try to make the argument that our not being a soccer fan makes us less passionate about playing the game. Ask Fat Monkey (the six toed, cross dressing porn star) who showed the most desire on a soccer field out of pretty much anyone he’s played with or coached.

Your “get out and see the world” statement doesn’t wash. I’m pretty sure when I fly to Ireland, the first thing some chap in a pub will want to discuss with me will not be the Great George Best. It sure hasn’t happened yet in my travels. Of course, I’ll bring my Team Canada Olympic Hockey Team poster and hang it up in the Pub for them!

BTW: just to completely confuse the issue and deflate everyone’s egos here: the World’s two best-known athletes are Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods. In the end, two athletes from highly marketed American sports that don’t have near the same participation level as soccer does worldwide. Kind of like HOCKEY (not Ice Hockey! No need to distinguish it!).

In conclusion: I LOVE SOCCER BUT HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT GEORGE BEST, AND I’M PROUD OF IT!

que?

How do you reckon the world's two most famous athletes are Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan? Did you get that out of a Sports Illustrated article? There's a big part of the world outside North America you might be surprised to hear.

Having heard about someone and having the slightest idea of what it is they actually do are two things that should be kept separate. We've all heard of George W. Bush but no one seems to know exactly what it is he does. I still find it difficult to comprehend how, having played football all your life, you've never heard of George Best. After Pele and, perhaps, Maradonna, Puskas, Stephen Burns and Lennard Bobbaduzzi, he has to be the most famous footballer ever and, without question, the most famous Welshman ever.

And as for how Handcannon is able to fly in the company of dogs, poodles French and otherwise, you should know that he works for the Government. He's a spy.

Here's a possible theory: I'm the only kid in my family who played soccer. I didn't have a parent who was an ardent fan of the game. The only player I looked up to (sadly) was Carl Valentine. Why? Because my Mum bought me a Whitecaps poster and hung it up in my bedroom. Hey, I'll admit it: I know my Mum originally enrolled me in soccer when I was five to keep me out of trouble, and get exercise. It's not my fault I fell in love with the sport, and chose to pursue playing it for the rest of my life. You see, not everyone out here is a pretentious Brit, who has followed and worshiped footballers his whole life. I make no apologies for that, and I don't think anyone else should have to either.

On Jordan & Woods: obviously I've read it in SI, but as you pointed out, it hardly counts because of its biased American reporting. I have also read it in various other News magazines and newspapers. To list them now would be difficult, because there really have been so many. And most of the articles did not identify SI as a source (something I actually do look for). I would also bet if you cared to do some research in any European based newspaper archives, you'd get the same findings. Hey, I don't do the research, I only read the results. Blame their popularity on Nike, not Dude!

Who is this Stephen Burns anyhow? I bet he drinks too much beer and has shoddy ankles…

Poodles and elucidation

First of all, sorry for using the word elucidation. I don't even know what I'm talking about half the time, and I have recently discovered that I actually used it int he wrong context. I checked with my Mum last night, and indeed, the two dutchmen are off the hook, as they in fact "elucidated" all over her chin, so it's between the spaniard, the italian and the poodle now.

And as far as the poodle being on the airplane, unless one is born 9 months premature, there is a time-lag between conception and birth, therefore the poodle had nothing to do with airplane part of my sordid tale.

As far as this Michael Jordan most popular bollocks goes, it just doesn't wash with me. If you are trying to tell be that Rajid Ikbal Ragheed in deepest, darkest Pakistan has heard of MJ and not Pele or George Best, I'd call you a big fat fancy-pants liar. Basketball is a silly girl's sport played by freaks of nature and cleverly marketed to appeal to a select market demographic, i.e. losers. I went to one grizzlies game, and that was enough for me.

But back to George and Wayne. What if???????????hmmmm..
