Highlights from Rino's win over CCB

Looked a pretty solid penalty shout at 3:52...

Enjoyed Duliba on why he wasn't sending the guy off "the only reason you are still on this field is because I'm going to allow it right now." Ok.....

Sounded like Binger's/Harps on the adjacent pitch was rather spirited!

Why does he need to have the conversation right in front of the camera.... All about him. If it is a sending off, send the player off.

Two weeks left before the Winter Break and just about everything is still to play for in Premier. The title remains a four way battle, though the top four, after looking settled over the last few months, might be in question with Peg knocking on the door seeking an automatic Provincial Cup spot. Then there is the top six battle with could go any number of ways, especially with CCB holding games in hand. Plus all of a sudden FASA have the chance to create a relegation battle this week. Maybe the picture will be clearer by the time the holidays roll around...

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 14

CCB LFC v Croatia
Last week Croatia were held to a nervy 1-1 draw by Coquitlam while CCB were beaten 1-0 by Rino's. Despite this likely being the marquee fixture on the schedule this week, it does not exactly scream entertainment value. The VMSL Champions against the Provincial and National Champions should be appointment viewing, and will no doubt produce a good contest, but given the form of the two sides this one looks likely to be one for the footballing connoisseur, so to speak. There are some big time names on these two rosters, including reigning VMSL MVP David Malamura for Croatia and a host of college stars for CCB such as UBC's Jordan Haynes and SFU's Polisi brothers Matteo and Marcello. Plus CCB can call upon former Whitecap Caleb Clarke, former Pacific FC centre back Ryan McCurdy and MLS Super Draft pick Mamadi Camara, just to name a few. That said, it is clear that CCB's weapons can be held in check, as was the case against Rino's last week and against Croatia's league best defense, the goal will not be getting any easier to come by this week. Croatia's last five results all have been suffocating one goal games and there is little reason to expect that to change this week. While defense may indeed win championships, it is not always the most enthralling to watch. Look for a tight game here with just the odd goal in it to separate the sides. Who gets it? Coin toss, and there is every chance these sides split the points. However, Croatia have been able to deliver the crucial moment more often than not this season, so give them a slight edge.

Coquitlam Metro Ford Wolves v Pegasus
While Metro Ford would be disappointed they were not able to get another win over the line against first place Croatia, they remain unbeaten in their last five. This has vaulted them into control of their own destiny in terms of finishing in the top six, though CCB will hope to have something to say about that. The Tri Cities boys can take a step towards reeling in fifth place Pegasus if the can get back in the win column this weekend. Peg are currently six points up on Coquitlam and are yet to lose to a team below them in the table. They themselves are eyeing up West Van who are now just three points ahead of them. Of course, a top four spot would mean a guaranteed return to Provincial Cup competition for Pegasus without having to sweat out the Imperial Cup results. Plenty to play for in this one then, especially for Coquitlam though as failure to pick up maximum will leave the door open for Inter to undo all the work that Metro ford have done on this latest run and immediately knock them out of the top six. Statistically these teams look relatively equal with just a few goals for and against to separate them. It was a similar story when Coquitlam played Inter two weeks ago and they waltzed to a 3-0 win. The Tri Cities boys are feeling it at the minute, look for their purple patch to continue.

Club Inter EDC Burnaby v Rovers Hurricanes
In the first meeting between these two sides Inter ended Rovers bid for a perfect season in the most unlikely of fashion, coming back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3. It was not to be the last time this season that the Rovers have had things go a bit off the rails. The went on a run that produce just one point from three matches back at the beginning of November, but have emerged from that spell and posted back to back wins. Thanks to other results, they remain right in the title hunt, just two points out of first place. Given their ups and downs already this year, a repeat of their performance from that first Inter match is something they will surely want to avoid. While Rovers are hunting a chance to reclaim the VMSL title, Chinter a seeking a return to the Provincial Cup (although technically it would not be a "return", as the entity that is "Club Inter EDC Burnaby" has actually never qualified at the Open level). They are now in seventh once again, the place they finished last season, and that is not good enough for a ticket to the chance unless they can reach the Imperial Cup final. No surprise to see Rovers boasting the joint best offense in the league, so expect them to score in this one. Can Inter keep up the way they did in round one? It is certainly possible, but it seems unlikely.

Columbus v West Van
It seems as though once again Columbus let their emotions get the better of themselves and have ended up running afoul of the league. It saw them lose star midfielder Mark Baldisimo for an extended period earlier this season, and arguably cost them important points against FASA in the same match. They are currently without first choice goalkeeper Kevin Monk as he serves an extended ban and now they have two further names on the naughty list in Luigi Polisi and Alejandro Castelblanco. It all seems to have stemmed from a contested penalty incident late in their 2-0 loss to Rovers last week. It also seems to start at the top as coaches Rino Consiglio and Frank Valente were both booked for dissent as well during the match. This all comes just as it looked like Columbus were getting some traction after a back to back draws as they still are without a win in their return to Premier. West Van are not strangers to a good meltdown. They came unglued in their match against Rino's earlier this year. So perhaps the VMSL had better ensure they have one of their best officials in the middle this week. The former Trollers will also be without goalkeeper Stephen Welle this week after he was sent off in their shock 2-2 draw with rivals NorVan last week. However, they appear to have a capable deputy in Mitch McCaw who has chalked up a pair of clean sheets himself this year. Columbus did get their first, and for a long time only, point off West Van earlier this season. Tough to see history repeating here, though.

NorVan v Guildford FASA
This match may not have the big names and glamour of some of the other fixtures this week, but it looks like it is our last chance at having a true relegation battle, so, absent a true heavyweight tilt, let's call this one the MOTW. After seven straight losses where they were bleeding goals, FASA, seemingly out of nowhere, tightened up defensively and picked up a 2-1 win over White Eagles last week. All of a sudden they are within four points of NorVan, who earned an impressive 2-2 draw with West Van last week. Evidently they needed it, as, without that point, a loss here would see FASA pull level with them. FASA looked dead and buried during their losing skid, giving up 7, 5, 6 and 9 goals against in four of those defeats. It has left them sitting with an abysmal defensive record as their 46 goals conceded are a dozen more than the next closest team. For NorVan, they have had the opposite problem. Their 17 goals for are more than only last place Columbus and less than FASA, who have 18. So it appears to be a battle between a team that cannot score and one that cannot defend, surely something has to give! NorVan won three games on the spin during the back half of October to climb to relative safety, but then immediately lost three straight before their draw last week. Fortunately the North Shore side do seem to be finding the net on a more regular basis these days. After scoring just three goals in their first five matches, they have only been held off the score sheet once in the seven games since. They also won the reverse fixture against FASA and given "Guildford's" wildly poor play over the last two months, NorVan surely have to be favourites here. That said, if FASA can get things right again this week, all the neutrals may get to enjoy a relegation battle after all this season.

Burnaby Selects White Eagles v Rino's Tigers
Not sure what exactly happened to the vaunted White Eagles offense last week. Despite being a top five offensive team in the league, and despite playing against the worst defense in the division, White Eagles were on able to muster a lone goal in a rather limp 2-1 defeat to FASA. That was a FASA team as well that came into that match on the back of seven straight losses. Whatever the issue is, the will need their attack back in action this week if they are to have any chance against Rino's. The Tigers scored early and then kitty barred the door to grind out an important 1-0 win against CCB last week. No surprises for guessing that it was Farivar Torabi with the goal, moving him onto a league best 15 for the season. He accounts for over half of Rino's offensive output so far this year, making it safe to say that without him Rino's would surely be nowhere near the lofty heights that they currently enjoy. Burnaby's Matlash Vladyslav is second in the league behind Torabi as he sits on 12 goals. However, he has only scored once in his last five matches for the once Serbians. Those goals helped newly promoted White Eagles amass 13 points and look fairly safe in mid-table. This recent form though has them stalled out with the teams behind them making up ground. Suddenly their safety is looking to be on less sturdy ground and their cushion could be down to just a single point if they cannot manage a result this weekend. If Vladyslav can rediscover his scoring touch while the rest of his teammates find a way to snuff out Torabi, White Eagles might have a shot here. Otherwise, though, Rino's appear to be straightforward favourites.
