So after all that, Rino's are back in first place. That being said, we get a week to catch our breath before the reverse fixtures start and that means Croatia get another chance against Rino's. The race at the bottom looks all but over, however the race for the top six looks as though it might well be fantastic this season.

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 11

Croatia v Guildford FASA
With CCB picking up the points against Rovers last week, FASA's seemingly inevitable demise into the relegation zone was completed when they were smashed 6-2 by Rino's. A league worst 34 goals against does not quite put them on a path to Campo-like numbers, but it certainly is not a recipe for survival. They have now lost six straight and there seems to be little reason for optimism. Croatia lost a close top of the table match against West Van and slipped out of first place; this should be the perfect tonic for their frustration. The Europeans do not leap to mind when you think of free scoring sides, but they have quietly put up the fourth best offensive record in the league. They should have a chance to pad those stats this week.

CCB LFC v West Van
After a big win over title hopefuls and local rivals Rovers, CCB will look to stun another contender in what is likely the MOTW. The win helped CCB climb out of the relegation zone, though in truth no one expected them to be there for long. With their star names getting healthy and a purported slew of top end university talent on the way, their days in the bottom echelons of the table are surely limited. However, their next target is getting back on even footing in the Provincial Cup race. With two matches in hand over the rest of that field, those six points would pull them into a tie for the sixth and final spot. That leaves them in a fairly solid dog fight, meaning matches against contenders like Rovers and West Van, et al, start to take on more importance. Certainly the Surrey boys boast a roster capable of picking up points in these matches and, if they can, that will likely give them a leg up on the rest of the sides fighting to qualify. They beat Rovers impressively 2-0 last week, but West Van look to be something of a different beast. While Rovers like to lean on their offense, the former Trollers are known as as defensive stalwarts. This year, though, they are proving they have the attacking capabilities needed to pair with their defending creating a potent title contender. The Amblesiders proved this once again this past weekend when they found they decisive, and only, goal in a 1-0 success against title rivals Croatia. This should be a proper top tier affair, despite the fact that CCB are currently mired in tenth. West Van have to be favourites, but you certainly cannot write CCB off.

Columbus v Club Inter EDC Burnaby
Another week, another loss for Columbus. This time they were bested by Coquitlam who were a team that had started poorly and likely represented a last chance at safety for Columbus. With still just one point through almost the entire first half of the season, the fate of the Italians is beginning to look sealed. With CCB holding games in hand and, realistically, likely to continue to climbe the table, Columbus are nine points back of Coquitlam and safety. While they certainly will not repeat the 100+ goals against that Campo allowed last year, one has to wonder if they will better their point total. Other than a future meeting with fellow relegation side FASA it is difficult to see where they might find a win given their results to this point. Chinter got a solid bounce back win, 2-0 over NorVan, after they lost in somewhat controversial fashion to the other promoted side, White Eagles. You know the "Italians" would like nothing more than to continue to heap misery in their old rival from Columbus and based on the form of these sides, it seems a safe wager. Perhaps this is the night that Columbus finally find the formula, and you know that if they are destined for relegation that they are going to go down swinging, but it is hard to bet on them at the moment.

Rino's Tigers v Coquitlam Metro Ford Wolves
Two results needed, two results taken for Coquitlam in their last two matches against FASA and Columbus. Failure to pick up maximum points from those outings likely would have changed the lens through which Coquitlam's season would be viewed as instead of being "surprising slow starters" they would have had to be considered genuine relegation candidates. Instead they now find themselves in the mid-table pack, though based on their form thus far, they are still looking like an "out" team when it comes to Provincial Cup qualification at the moment. They went on a tear in the second half last season and will need something similar this year if they are going to climb up the standings and solidify a position in the top half. There are signs that the Tri Cities boys are starting to rumble out of hibernation; talisman Carlo Basso is up to seven goals now and Metro Ford will be hoping he is somewhat of a bellwether for the rest of the flock. Certainly a strong performance and any type of result against first place Rino's would go a long way to boosting spirits. It is, of course, easier said than done especially with Tigers top scorer Farivar Torabi coming off a sumptuous performance in which he netted five goals to take him to the forefront of the Golden Boot race with 13 on the season. That's just four back of what Coquitlam have managed as a team. Coquitlam have knocked off the bottom feeders, now it is back to the challenges at the top of the table, so we shall see if their new found taste for winning can lead to further improved results. Rino's are, obviously, the favourites here though.

NorVan v Pegasus
There was an abrupt end to NorVan's three match winning streak when they squared off against fellow mid-table side Inter last week. It was a 2-0 defeat and had all the hallmarks of NorVan's in ability to score from earlier in the campaign. The North Shore boys will be hoping that this was just a one-off aberration, however, there is no denying the numbers which show they have scored the second fewest goals in the league, ahead of only last place, and winless, Columbus. In fact, if you remove their three wins in a row they have only scored three goal in six matches. If you remove all four of their wins it is only one goal for in five matches. Scoring the first goal of the match appears to be absolutely crucial as NorVan have gone on to win all four times they have done so, while, perhaps, needless to say, they have not been able to come back into matches at all once falling behind with their only goal coming via a stoppage time consolation marker against Croatia. Peg, on the other hand, are a wild card. Their last trip to the North Shore was a disaster as West Van spanked them 5-0 and they limped away with their tails firmly between their legs and with two players having been sent off. All that said, NorVan are certainly no West Van and the Horsemen are coming off a strong 3-0 win over White Eagles. Their only losses through the first half of the year have come at the hands for the four teams above them in the table who are competing for the titlle. There only blemish against the teams below them came against local rival, and Provincial and National Champions, CCB. Assuming Peg travel at full strength, if they can score an early goal, statistically speaking, they should be in great shape. That said, NorVan will be looking to dig in and get something out of this match so if they get the first goal they might well be able to grind this one out. Tough to call given Peg's inconsistency so I'll chop it and say it finishes level.

Burnaby Selects White Eagles v Rovers Hurricanes
This one is the showdown of the returning offensive heavyweights. Former divisional leading goal scorer Matlash Vladyslav and second leading team scorer Vuk Erbez are both back from suspension for White Eagles. On the other side, key attacker Pavi Dhillon returns from his second yellow card accumulation suspension this season. Given that he was suspended for two of them, that means Dhillon chalked up five yellows in eight matches. It also means that every league yellow card he gets for the rest of the season will result in him having to attend a discipline hearing and serving at least another one game ban. Certainly that is a tight rope to be walking and, if last week is any indication, Rovers will miss him dearly should he be forced out of further matches. They were beaten 2-0 by local rivals CCB, making it the first time their potent offense has been held off the board this season and it also saw them supplanted by Rino's for the best offensive record in the league after their six goal outburst. Scoring goals has hardly been the problem for Rovers this year, as mentioned they led the league in that category until last weekend, it is keeping them out that has proved difficult. There 16 goals against is much more of a mid-table statistic compared with the other title challengers and their goal difference indicates this as well. They are between four and seven goals worse off in that department than the three teams ahead of them and they have also fallen four points back of Rino's at the top while the other chasers remain within one win of first place. A match against White Eagles is unlikely remedy that problem given that Burnaby too have a potent offense with their 20 goals for the most of any team outside the top four. Fortunately for Rovers, they have the same issue that they Surrey boy do in that they give up far too many goal as their 22 against is a number more akin with the relegation places than mid-table. So it means that you should probably take the over in this one as there figures to be goals in it. With Dhillon back in the line up though, it should be a full strength Rovers side that make the Sunday night journey to Burnaby and that means they are likely the favourites.

Whoa... Excellent site with CMF over Rino's 2-1.

Given Coquitlam's form this season I would say that constitutes a blink by Rino's in the title race...

This is great, every team should be targeting these guys as a must win. Yous can all play with them any day of the week. Keep those L’s coming son.

Reverse fixtures begin this week as we hit the second half of the schedule. Also, all university players should be filling the ranks of the local sides in short order with the colleges having wrapped up a few weeks ago as well as UBC two weeks back and SFU having being left out of the NCAA Div. 2 tournament. This is where the VMSL season truly begins, though several teams have already positioned themselves well for the back stretch. Four more matches until the winter break, let's see in anyone can make a splash in the table before then.

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 12

Coquitlam Metro Ford Wolves v Club Inter EDC Burnaby
All of a sudden this game looks to have huge Provincial Cup implications. For at time it was looking as though they might actually be dragged into a relegation fight, nut now Coquitlam have rattled off three straight wins and climbed to seventh, just two points behind sixth place Inter and a Provincial Cup position, pending Imperial Cup ramifications. It is no surprise that this uptick in form has come on the back of striker and talisman Carlo Basso rediscovering his scoring touch. He is up to eight goals on the year now and had a crucial tally in Metro Ford's eye catching 2-1 win over title challengers Rino's last week. After beginning the season without a goal in their first four matches, Basso now has five in his last four games which has come as the perfect time for the Tri-Cities boys. There was also a question of who would score the goals for Inter EDC this season, but it appears that Rizal Ganief has managed to role back the clock to his dominant days with the Chile of old as he too has eight goals for the campaign. When these sides met on opening day it was a rather drab 0-0 encounter with little to get the fans excited about. This match should have plenty more vim and vigor about it, especially given that at least one of these two sides is likely to be on the outside looking in come Provincials. That said, while I think there will be goals, I am not convinced the result will be any different that the first round between these teams as I expect them to split the points.

Columbus v Pegasus
Back on Opening Day a newly promoted, hopeful Columbus, along with what appeared to be a small army of bodies on their sideline, arrived at Empire with designs on capitalizing against a Pegasus side that were coming off a sub par 2018/19 campaign. Columbus put in a solid display, but ultimately came up short against a Peg side that had clearly reinvigorated itself thanks to some off season restructuring. That was about as good as things have got for Columbus, other than an impressive away point at Ambleside a few weeks later. It has be a tough slog through the first half of the season and the Italians seem destined for an immediate return to Division 1. They did earn a second point of the season last time out, in a 2-2 draw with Chinter, to at least move them above Campo's abysmal one point tally last season and onto the two points and no wins record that a nascent Rino's Tigers mustered in their first season in Premier back in 2015/16. Survival, on the other hand, looks to be out of reach. With CCB set to add a crop of university talent and already putting up strong results against title contending opposition, they certainly are unlikely to remain in the lower reaches of the table much longer, which would make NorVan and White Eagles, currently ten points better off than Columbus, the targets for safety. Regardless of who they might catch, if they are going to make any type of survival push they need to start winning matches and they look to be in tough once again this week. Pegasus have perhaps not looked the most assured of teams this season, and their negative goal differential highlights their potential weaknesses, but their only losses have come against the teams above them in the table. The Surrey boys took care of business in a tricky away trip to NorVan last week and are clearly the favourites here.

CCB LFC v Guildford FASA
Another impressive result for CCB in a 2-2 draw with title challenging West Van as the National Champions look to be nearing top form once more. This result comes on the heels of a solid win over local rivals Rovers who are also in the title hunt this year. With SFU's season ending, the pre-season rumour mill had the Polisi brothers, Marcello and Matteo, committing to play with the Surrey side this season, after spending previous campaigns with Rino's Tigers, and that serves to only improve CCB's chances of working their way back up the table. Indeed, they do still have somewhat of a mountain to climb in order to get back into the Provincial Cup conversation, before even considering anything more than that. Their two games in hand will help, assuming they can win them, but the problem is not necessarily the points themselves, they currently sit six back of Inter in sixth, it is the sheer number of teams in their way. Their seemingly indifferent early season form as they prepared for Nationals looks to perhaps being in a position to bite them now, after they dropped points in several matches that you would have expected them to win. None of their results was more shocking than their Opening Day loss to newly incarnated FASA. It was a result that stunned the league, but, unfortunately for FASA, it was far from a sign of things to come. That game and their one against last place Columbus are their only wins on the season and now that they have sunk into the relegation places it is difficult to see them climbing out of it. They are still scoring averaging a goal a game, and said goal often gives them the lead early as well, but they cannot even remotely keep the ball out of their own net. Their 36 goals against through 11 matches means they are averaging more than three goals conceded per match and that is not a recipe for success at any level of football, never mind the VMSL Premier Division. Even though they were focused on Nationals, that Opening Day loss surely stung CCB. Expect them to send a statement and flex their muscles in getting some revenge in this rematch.

Croatia v Rino's Tigers
It is first against second in what is clearly the MOTW. Croatia are back on top of the table thanks to Rino's somewhat surprising loss to Coquitlam last time out. After supplanting Croatia in first place the previous weekend, the Tigers would have been hoping to consolidate their position, but, instead, that 2-1 reversal allowed Croatia to overtake them with a 2-1 win of their own over FASA. That was a bounce back win for Croatia after having been beaten by fellow title contenders West Van the week before 1-0. Their only other loss on the season was also 1-0 and it came against Rino's back on Opening Day. That was a tightly contested match with a late goal from current league scoring leader Farivar Torabi proving to be the difference. This game has the look of going in a similar direction. Croatia boasts the co-best defense in the league while Rino's have the co-best offense. That being said, neither team is a slouch in the opposite category, as both sides have identical goal differentials. This match seems destined to be decided by a game breaker. Torabi is the obvious candidate for Rino's, but while Croatia might not have anyone as clear cut as Torabi among their ranks to win them the game, they do have a solid layer of candidates to choose from just below the surface. Former Golden Boot winner and current VMSL MVP David Malamura has the potential to change this match and former FVSL Golden Boot winner Daniel Davidson seems to be warming up to life in the VMSL in his second season as he leads Croatia with six goals. Emile Saimovici is another name that has emerged for Croatia this season, scoring timely goals and seemingly filling the void left by the departed Colin Jaques. Will any of these players, or indeed anyone else between the two teams, emerge as the hero this weekend. It should be a top contest, though I have a feeling it could well be short on offense meaning the neutrals in attendance will likely need to have an eye for strong technical football. As for a winner, Rino's seem to be flirting with inconsistency which may or may not be a symptom of some other underlying deficiency. After their perfect start through five matches they are a rather ho-hum 3-3 since then. Surprise losses like last week's to Metro Ford and their first of the season to Chinter do not exactly instill confidence either. It is a toss up but I will take Croatia to win and stay in first place.

NorVan v Rovers Hurricanes
Simply put Rovers cannot afford any more dropped points against bottom sides if they are to be taken seriously as title contenders. They drew 2-2 with newly promoted Burnaby White Eagles last week and that gives them a total of just one point earned from their previous three matches. They are now clearly the fourth of the four teams that have been in the title race up until now, and they look to be seriously in danger of being the odd side out if the title race moves to a three team showdown. If they keep dropping points though they can forget about a title challenge, they will need to turn their attention to ensuring their book a place in the Provincial cup with teams like Inter, Coquitlam and CCB all vying for sport behind them. A Saturday evening trip to North Vancouver is not the most relished away day in the VMSL's top flight, but Rovers cannot afford to bring anything less than their best, they simply have to have the points. NorVan could, of course, use the points as well, especially if they are eyeing up a potential bid for a Provincial Cup spot. However, their lack of offense and negative seven goal difference belies a team that is not likely deserving of a place in the top half, at least not on current form. They were unlucky not to get something after coming back from two goals down against Peg last week, but, overall, they just have not been strong enough offensively this season. A total of 14 goals for is only one better than last place Columbus, so it is difficult to look at a match up and think the North Shore side are going to overpower anybody. Scoring goals has not been a problem for Rovers as their have the joint best offensive record in the league. Assuming they have their shooting boots with them this weekend it would seem unlikely that NorVan will be able to keep up.

Burnaby Selects White Eagles v West Van
On Opening Day White Eagles put in a very assured performance against a heavily favoured West Van side and even had a look to take a second half lead before the former Trollers ultimately prevailed on an injury time winner. Burnaby have given a good account of themselves through the first half of the campaign, with the once Serbians proving that they can be competitive at this level. In fact if not for back to back lopsided losses against Coquitlam and NorVan, matches that were certainly winnable for Serbia, they could well be in serious contention for a Provincial Cup berth. That seems unlikely to materialize now, given their current place in the table, but there is no reason to expect they will stop giving teams competitive games. After being done favour last week by Burnaby taking points off one of their title rivals, Rovers, West Van will look to thank White Eagles by beating them themselves. With fellow contenders Rino's and Croatia clashing, the Amblesiders simply cannot afford to make the same mistake as Rovers last week. It is looking very much like the title race will come down to the final weeks of the season and West Van certainly want to be right in the thick of that conversation. They will need their joint league best defense to keep Burnaby's potent Matlash Vladyslav in check, but, should they be able to nullify the 12 goal man, they should have plenty of looks of their own given that White Eagles have surrendered 24 goals in 11 games so far this year. West Van are the better team on paper so as long as they bring their best on the day they should walk away with another win.

As expected, Croatia were able to grind out a win against Rino's and remain top of the table. Coquitlam are right back into the thick of the Provincial Cup race after winning four straight, but, despite still being four points back, it is CCB who look to be in control of the final berth at the minute given their recent uptick in form and their two games in hand. Also, it is supposed to be frigid this week so we shall see if anyone withers in the cold!

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 13

Croatia v Coquitlam Metro Ford Wolves
This game pits number one in the form table against number one in the league table, making it the MOTW. Coquitlam is the hottest team in the league at the minute as they come into this one on a four game winning streak. Those have not been just charity wins either. While the first two did come against relegation sides FASA and Columbus, they followed that up by beating the then league leaders Rino's Tigers and looked like vintage Metro Ford in dispatching Chinter last week, winning 3-0 to vault into the top half of the table. Croatia, meanwhile, were busy also beating Rino's in order to ensure they remained in first place. As predicted, it was a tight, tense game short on chances and Emile Saimovici had the only goal, but it proved decisive. Croatia's biggest offensive output of the season came in a 5-2 win over Coquitlam in the first meeting between these two sides. However, do not necessarily expect a repeat of that as all of Croatia match for the past month have been tight, one goal affairs. Add the that the fact that the Tri-Cities boys are on a heater at the minute, and the probability of them getting spanked again seems pretty low. This game will likely be there for the winning in the second half and it will be about seeing if either side can find a moment of magic (see Saimovici, Emile above) and claim all three points. Croatia have come up with the goods against FASA, Rovers and Rino's of late, but were on the wrong side of the coin against West Van. As for their opponents, the purple patch for the Tri Cities boys surely will not last forever as well, but they have already beaten one first place team during their current run. In the end I will say that it all comes out in the wash and the sides end up splitting the points.

Rovers Hurricanes v Columbus
Back to back draws amounts to a hot streak for Columbus as the Italians are on their best run of the season so far! All joking aside, Columbus clearly have not given up the fight just yet. With a game against FASA coming in a couple of week, they must surely be thinking if they can keep picking up points and then get a win against FASA they might be able to start putting some pressure on Norvan would are stalled out at the minute. It is a stretch goal for sure, but Columbus need something to cling on to and that might be it. Their first time out against Rovers they matched up reasonably well, tying the game at 1-1 and 2-2 before ultimately falling 3-2. They should have looks to score goals again this time around with Rovers only clean sheet coming opening day against Norvan. Rovers defensive record has them as the outlier among the top four teams and might just cost them a shot at the title down the stretch. They have given up a 3-0 this season and almost through away a 2-0 last week, allowing ten man Norvan back into that game, though they hung on to win 2-1 in the rematch between those sides. So Columbus should take heart and given themselves a chance going into this game. That being said, Rovers are in the top for a reason, as the Surrey side's attackers have been getting the job done so far this season with current Golden Boot holder Nick Soolsma up to ten on the season. After dropping points in three straight matches, Rovers cannot afford any more slip ups against lower table sides if they are to remain in the title conversation. They are clearly the favourites here, but will need to make sure they do not take Columbus lightly solely because they are in last place.

Pegasus v Club Inter EDC Burnaby
There is likely to be room for only one of these sides in the Provincial Cup this season. Then again, they could both find themselves on the outside looking in come April, as was the case last year. Coquitlam's sudden resurgence has seen them pass Inter with Peg next in their sights. Meanwhile, Provincial Champions CCB are lurking just four points behind EDC and eight back of Peg with two games in hand over both teams. Peg started the season brightly and had ridden that to a comfortable fifth place standing that they have occupied more or less stably over the past almost two months. They have maintained this position by continuing to beat the teams below them in the table, though they were held to a 2-2 draw by last place Columbus last week. A win here for the horsemen would really put them in the driver's seat for a top six finish and it would also keep them knocking on the door of the top four which, if they could slip into that group, would guarantee them a return to the Provincial Cup as opposed to having to wait for the Imperial Cup results in order to confirm their place. There is no doubt that these points are much more valuable to Inter at the minute given that they are now entirely outside of the top six. Unfortunately for them they are in the midst of a stretch of three road games in a row and their record away from home has a sore spot for the "Italian"-Chileans this year. Their only away win of the season came when they put seven past a woeful FASA side. These teams look to be fairly evenly matched so perhaps a draw would be the mostly likely, but given Inter's struggles away from Burnaby lake this season, I'll take Peg at home in this one.

Rino's Tigers v CCB LFC
The schedule continues to deal up the stiff tests for Rino's as they work through a tricky part of their season. They have lost back to back games for the first time this year and three of their last five. Conversely, CCB seem to have found the recipe and have picked up points in four straight matches. Restocking the shelves with some University talent helps and the sub plot of this match will be Matteo and Marcello Polisi suiting up for CCB to play against Rino's, with whom they played the previous three seasons. CCB also features Elie Gindo and Kristian Yli-Hietanen who were with Rino's last season. The Surrey side will be in good spirits after dismantling FASA 9-1 last week, featuring four goals for Matteo Polisi in his season debut after SFU were left out of the NCAA playoffs. The first meeting of this season saw Rino's slip in to Newton and come away with the points in a 2-1 win. However, CCB were prioritizing their health for Nationals at the time and the lineup they field in the return fixture is likely to be starkly different. Indeed, with their star-laden roster CCB resemble a side that should be in the top four of the table along with Rino's, not still toiling down in the bottom four. For the Tigers there is no question that leading scorer and new found talisman Farivar Torabi is the key to their success, but as was the question prior to this season beginning, is he enough? The rest of the side consists mostly of players with limited VMSL experience, certainly at the top level anyway. They will have another chance to prove they belong among the league's elite this weekend, but given the roster CCB are able to draw from, the Surrey boys have to be favourites here.

Guildford FASA v Burnaby Selects White Eagles
Another week another loss for FASA as they continue their decent in oblivion (and/or Div. 1...). This time it was a 9-1 thrashing at the hands of CCB which was much more the result we expected compared to their Opening Day 2-1 win over the Provincial Champions. If FASA are to win another game this season, and at the minute that is a fairly big if, they will need to do something about their porous defense. Burnaby White Eagles are looking all but a certainty to be sticking around for another year in Premier and a win this week would give them a ten point cushion with nine games to go. The first time around when these teams met Burnaby exercised their offensive muscles in a 5-1 win. Not worth over analyzing this one, look for Matlash Vladyslav and co. to take the opportunity to increase their position in the Golden Boot race.

West Van v NorVan
It is time for another installment of the North Shore derby with Norvan wandering down off the mountain to sea level to face West Van at Ambleside. The former Trollers were held to a somewhat surprising 3-3 draw by White Eagles last time out. The usually stingy West Van defense gave up a 2-0 and 3-2 lead in that match, which is completely out of character for the usually stalwart Amblesiders. That result also means that they lost touch with Croatia at the top of the table as they now sit three points back. Given how tight things are at the top, West Van should have a chance our two to make up that ground, by we are approaching the home stretch here meaning that any small slip ups are becoming more and more amplified. NorVan, on the other hand, have stalled out again. After winning three straight they have now lost three on the spin. While they are chipping in with more goals now than before, they remain the joint lowest scorers in the league, along with last place Columbus. Not being able to score leaves the North Shore boys painted into a bit of a corner, given that as soon as they concede the odds of them earning maximum points from the match go down the drain. This has left them on the edge of the drop zone, with their main hope for safety the fact that neither Columbus nor FASA look like they will be able to reach the 12 point mark that NorVan has already amassed. In fact, their survival could almost be decided next week when they play FASA with a win putting them onto what seems an unwatchable 15 points, but a loss closing the gap the just three. With that in mind, anything they manage to take off their neighbours this week would have to be considered a bonus.
