Hit a soft spot it seems. I imagine going to nationals could be kept within a respectable cost and players would/could/should cover a majority of the cost to attend. As again this is amateur soccer.

have team fundraisers <which I’m sure you did> and have a budget. Then have the team as a whole pay. Ideally it shouldn’t be paid out of either the head of the team or someone funding the head of the team.
Um, no.

BC Soccer should be funding teams to represent BC at Nationals full stop.

If you want players to fund then you better remove all the bullshit CSA restrictions where you have to fly Air Canada and you have to stay at X hotel.

FVSL put it in the budget...Pretty sure if someone won the damn thing in the valley they have enough saved to send 8 teams and their wives by now.

Thanks a lot, Langley.

didn’t know it was in the budget for FVSL. Maybe FVSL shouldn’t keep getting shite on. Seems to me there are a lot of positives coming out of FVSL right now.

The top four in Premier are separated by only two points and all four sides play each other this weekend. If this form continues we are shaping up to have quite the exciting title race. The battle for spots five and six also looks to be heating up as teams jockey to be in the best possible position for Provincial Cup qualification. At the bottom things remain close at the moment, but that race could well become relatively settled over the coming weeks.

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 9

Croatia v Rovers Hurricanes
One of two title altering top four clashed this week, this match likely edges out West Van against Rino's for MOTW honours. Both of these teams jumped over Rino's in the standings last week after Rovers found the decisive marker in a 3-2 win. Rovers now sit first alongside West Van while Croatia, following their 3-0 win over Pegasus, sit just one point back. Croatia also play West Van next week as we continue with this fantastic stretch of top fixtures that could perhaps produce a favourite, but will hopefully provide some great football regardless. For Rovers, their march back to the top has been perhaps somewhat unexpected. They were the toast of the league two seasons ago, running away with the VMSL title before bagging the Provincial Cup and bringing BC its first National title in over a decade. Last year, however, perhaps because of all the focus on Nationals, they were an afterthought locally, barely making the Provincial Cup places in sixth. However, they actually did not need their league standing to carry them to the Provincials, as their Imperial Cup form saw them reach the final, which is enough for a berth on its own merits. Maybe this was a better indication of the true Rovers as, after a rather toothless campaign, they looked like their old dominant selves in the Imperial Cup and also in another run to the semi-final of the Provincial cup in a bid to defend that title. Whatever the case, they certainly look to be back to their best this season and with both Nick Soolsma and Pavi Dhillon starting to find the net on a regular basis Hurricanes look good bets to be in the title conversation all season. So too, though, do Croatia as after almost quietly making their way to the title when CCB inexplicably collapsed down the stretch, their steady, reliable performances look to be getting the job done once more this season. Their lone loss came on Opening Day when they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Rino's in a game where it was hard to separate the two sides. Now they hope to be the first team to hand Rovers a loss this year and, in doing so, catapult over them in the table. This game is a total toss up as both sides clearly have more than enough weapons to win this one. I will give the edge to Croatia though as they are coming off back to back 3-0 wins and their defending seems to really be hitting its stride. Rovers can, of course, smash through just about any barrier, but they have been conceding goals themselves during loose moments at the back so far this season. Rino's scored a quick pair last week when Rovers looked to be in control and earlier this year the Surrey boys threw away a 3-0 lead to Inter in the second half and were forced to settle for a draw in what stands as the only blemish on their record so far. A small opening like that may well be all that Croatia need in this one and then they can turn things over to their well organized defense to see the match out.

CCB LFC v Pegasus
It is a Surrey derby in this match and those can always get spicy. CCB were beaten 1-0 by Chinter upon their return to play after Nationals last week. One of the instrumental pieces of that National Championship winning side, Yassin Essa, will be lining up on the other side of the field this week as he has returned to Pegasus this season. Peg could do with him finding the form that he had in Newfoundland for them as they are now in a bit of a slump after a hot start. The Horsemen have managed to take care of business against the teams below them in the table, but faced the top four side over the last five weeks and were beaten by all of them, ostensibly removing them as potential title contenders. CCB come into this back as one of the teams below Peg, but they do have a pair of games in hand from their time off to play in the Nationals. CCB would do well not to rest on their laurels much longer though, as they are currently hovering right around the relegation zone. Their roster is teeming with far too much talent for anyone to think they will remain there for long, but if they want a chance to defend their Provincial Cup title they will need to start putting some points on the board. This match looks to be especially key in that regard, as Peg are one of the sides hoping to get back into the post season tournament after being left out last season. A win over their local rivals would put them in a great position to maintain their cushion over the teams that have been creeping up behind them during this poor run of form, but I see CCB finally hitting their stride in this game and taking the points.

Guildford FASA v Coquitlam Metro Ford Wolves
The march down the standings continues for FASA who bled another pair of goals in a listless loss to West Van last week. This is actually one of their better performances in recent times, but they need to start finding points again or they are destined for the drop. CCB and their opponent this week, Coquitlam, are all that stand between them and the relegation places now that NorVan have put together a few results. CCB have games in hand and an uptick in form is expected now that Nationals are in the rear view mirror. Which leaves us with Coquitlam. The Tri-Cities boys have been digging quite the hole for themselves and after losing to NorVan last week their situation is starting to become slightly more serious. The good news is a win over FASA will lift them out of the relegation places with a match against last place Columbus on the docket for next week. Of course, if they were somehow to lose this match to FASA, their situation would start to look somewhat dire. If they were to fail to beat Columbus on top of that, well then it would be time to officially hit the panic button. FASA have given up the most goals in the league but, somewhat quietly, Coquitlam have conceded the second most, more than last place Columbus. While it is difficult to conceive of them as a relegation team, the stats are starting to bear that out. A win this week would quell that somewhat, and you have to think they are still favourites here, especially with long time talisman Carlo Basso beginning to rumble to life, but there is plenty of reasons to give FASA at least half a chance.

Rino's Tigers v West Van
The runner up marquee match this week is the now co-leaders West Van against the suddenly fourth place Rino's Tigers. After being in first place all season, their second loss of the season, 3-2 to Rovers last week, saw Rino's plummet all the way to fourth with West Van and Croatia both leapfrogging them. West Van took care of business against FASA in order to maintain their unbeaten record and climb to the top of the table, but now they will face back to back stiff test against Rino's and Croatia. Of course, if the former Trollers can take maximum points then they will put some distance between themselves and their pursuers. It is a similar story for Rino's only in reverse. After losing last week to Rovers, they desperately need some sort of result against West Van or they risk losing touch with the title race. True it would only be four points with over half a season still to play, but the top four do not look as though they will be dropping points to the teams below them very often this year meaning that making up ground could prove rather challenging. Again, this one is another that could go either way with both of these teams being full value for their records so far. Rino's have been led by Farivar Torabi who has put up eight goals in eight games after being lured away from Division 1 where he was the Golden Boot winner last season. For West Van, their always stingy defense has once again conceded the fewest goals in the league but this season they have had the offence to go with it. Their 22 goals are good enough for second most in the league with Eoin Mccormack leading the way for the Amblesiders with six. Its these small differences that make West Van look like a real contender this season and they already showed they have championship pedigree last year when they won the Imperial Cup. On the flip side, outside of Torabi, Rino's are a younger group who are still learning how to win with many of their experienced players from previous season having moved on to other opportunities. Certainly still a top side, but I will make West Van slight favourites here.

NorVan v Columbus
All of a sudden life if much brighter on the North Shore where NorVan have won two in a row and have a chance to make it three against newly promoted Columbus who are still seeking their first win back in Premier. A 2-1 win over Metro Ford ensured the work that NorVan had done previously to beat White Eagles and get out of the relegation zone was not wasted and, suddenly, the North Shore boys are comfortably mid-table with a chance to start nibbling at the edge of the Provincial Cup race if they can hold their nerve a see of Columbus. For the Italians they are starting to run out of real estate in terms of where they are going to find points. They have a postponed game against CCB that will sit until later in the season, but even with that in their pocket, they are beginning to fall out of touch with the rest of the field. It looks like FASA, who beat Columbus for one of their two wins on the season, will be falling into the relegation zone in the near future, but beyond that, Columbus need at least one other team to remain within touching distance. NorVan have now pulled away and, if they win again this week, might be already out of sight for the East Van come Burnaby side. Coquitlam has also been mired down in the relegation places, but they play FASA this week meaning at least one of those two sides will definitely be picking up points and then Columbus play Metro Ford next week in what is surely a must win game. A couple of weeks ago Columbus would have circled this one on the calendar as the perfect chance for their first win and an opportunity to drag another team in to the fight to stay up. Now, though, it can hardly even be classed as a relegation six-pointer. Yigal Bruk scored against for NorVan in their win over Metro Ford and he seems to have provided the answer to the teams goal scoring questions, at least in the short term. Assuming he keeps up his strong recent form, there is every reason to believe NorVan will pick up another win.

Burnaby White Eagles v Club Inter EDC Burnaby
There was a very important win for White Eagles last week against promotion cousins and last place Columbus. This gave Burnaby some breathing room between themselves and the relegation battle. Matlash Vladyslav also banged in a further brace, giving him some breathing room in the scoring race as he now has 11 on the season and a three goal lead over his nearest challengers. It might well be a one man show for the White Eagles, but few have proved able to stop him so far this season. Inter sit in the all important sixth place spot in the table coming into this week, but things are suddenly getting a little bit hotter under the collar with NorVan hot on their heels and even Burnaby within touching distance. Despite having netted 16 goals on the season, the main issue at Chinter is figuring out where the offense is going to come from. Seven of those 16 goals came in the win over FASA, the worst defensive team in the league, and without those goals the "Italians" are averaging only 1.3 goals per game. To put that in perspective Matlash Vladyslav is averaging 1.4 by himself. Quite frankly that is likely to be the battle this week. Can Chinter hold Vladyslav to one goal or less and can anyone on their side bang one in? One player who will definitely not be scoring for Inter is heart and soul midfielder Alex Marrello who has worked his way onto the naughty list. I think this game has draw written all over it.

For the second week in a row there is a new name at the top of the table and it looks like we are shaping up for possible one of the best title races in recent memory. At the bottom, the relegation battle looks like it could well be over already before the halfway point of the season. However, the battle to finish inside the top six and within the Provincial Cup places, subject to Imperial Cup results, looks to be getting quite good so we should be in for a very entertaining stretch through until the Winter Break.

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 10

Pegasus v Burnaby Selects White Eagles
It is a good week for Peg to welcome White Eagles to Surrey as both of Burnaby's top scorers, Matlash Vladyslav and Vuk Erbez, have picked up suspensions for yellow card accumulations. Missing Vladyslav, the league's current top scorer with 11 goals, will particularly hurt the newly promoted side as he accounts for over half of their total offensive output as a team to this point of the season. Peg have been particularly average over their last six matches; following their 3-0-0 start they are 1-1-4 since. However, those four loses came against the four top teams who look set to battle it out for the VMSL title this year. Pegasus, meanwhile, despite this banal run of form, have managed to hold onto fifth place in the table and the Provincial Cup spot that would accompany it, assuming two teams below them do not reach the Imperial Cup final. A return to the post season tournament is likely top of the agenda for the Surrey boys this year after they were left on the outside looking in last time around. Their grip on this spot in the standings has been loosened somewhat though as the field has closed in on them. Only two points separate them from eighth place, currently occupied by none other than this week's opponents, Burnaby. So, plenty to play for then, which hopefully means this should be a great game for any neutrals on hand. Given Burnaby are without two of their top players though, Peg likely go from being slight favourites already to strong favourites to bag all three points.

Rovers Hurricanes v CCB LFC
The two most recent National Champions clash in this version of the Surrey derby. CCB are now experiencing a similar Nationals hangover to what Rovers went through last season, though arguably Rovers never sank this far. CCB are mired in eleventh place, which would mean relegation if the season ended today. The squad is clearly missing the presence of last season's leading scorer, Milad Mehrabi, as well as Nationals standout Yassin Essa. However, reinforcements are apparently on the way with the Polisi brothers rumoured to be joining from SFU as well as Jordan Haynes from UBC. Making up the 17 points they are back of the league leading Croatia to climb into the title race seems unlikely, even for a roster as star studded as CCB could soon be trotting out. Even making up the distance to the top six, which currently sits at seven points, though CCB do hold games in hand, seems like it could be a struggle. However, escaping relegation is eminently doable and you would expect them to climb up the table in relatively short order. It might not happen this week though as Rovers desperately need the points to keep pace at the top after losing to Croatia last weekend. Interesting to see that second leading goal scorer Pavi Dhillon has already amassed five yellow cards and has, therefore, earned his second suspension of the year. Further complicating things for the Rovers man is the fact that every yellow card he gets for the rest of the season will now trigger a suspension and a discipline hearing, which could become rather tedious the way referees are handing out yellow cards these days. Even without Dhillon Rovers are, of course, still potent going forward, led by defending Golden Boot winner Nick Soolsma. The same holds true for CCB even without their college stars as former Whitecap Caleb Clarke along with their other weapons can change a game at a moments notice. Clashes between these two sides have become appointment viewing of late with CCB taking both league meetings last year before Rovers got their revenge in a comprehensive Imperial Cup semi-final win. This one is a bit of a toss up but, on form, Rovers have have the edge going in.

Club Inter EDC Burnaby v NorVan
Things unraveled a bit for Chinter against newly promoted White Eagles last weekend leading to both Ryan Zaharija and coach Moe Forouzan being sent off. They also lost the game 3-2 which allowed NorVan to jump over them into sixth place. After missing out on the Provincial Cup last season, the "Italians" are keen to make a return, but, after a slow start, now that NorVan have entered not only the conversation, but the top half of the table as well, they will likely be interested in having a go at qualifying for the competition for the first time in several years. NorVan have won three matches in a row, their latest a 3-2 win over Columbus, and their new found confidence will no doubt have them with their tails up coming into this match. The North Shore boys took care of business against the other struggling sides and this has allowed them to climb to safety. They now get the chance to show they belong this high up the table with a couple of matches against the other mid-table tenants before the schedule restarts and they face the title contenders once more. While they have not been a powerhouse this season, Inter have been good at bouncing back and are yet to lose two matches in a row this year. This one looks to be pretty even so let's say they split the points.

Coquitlam Metro Ford Wolves v Columbus
It was an important win for Coquitlam last time out. Beating FASA 2-0 meant they climbed over FASA and out of the relegation zone. With last place Columbus trekking out to the Tri-Cities this week, the opportunity is there for Metro Ford to consolidate their position and leave this business of a relegation battle behind them, at least for now. Of course Columbus know that their position is becoming rather dire. With no wins and just a single point to their name since returning to the top flight, the pathway to survival is beginning to look uncertain at best. The Italians are already five points from safety, though given CCB hold games in hand and, as Provincial and National Champions, are unlikely to be serious relegation contenders, the gap is more like six points and the team they need to catch is Coquitlam. Meaning a loss this week effectively moves that gap to nine points which is a steep mountain for a team that would then be on the precipice of having no wins through the first half of the season. The "must win" games started a while back for Columbus, but it does not seem to have borne any fruit. They were certainly better in a 3-2 loss last week to NorVan, but a last minute winner cost them even a single point and cannot have been good for morale either. Based on their form this season, Coquitlam certainly appear to be a team that Columbus could get points off, but it is far from a slam dunk. Given that Metro Ford can not only distance themselves from the relegation scrap with a win, but also get within sight of the Provincials race, you have to think they will be up for this one.

West Van v Croatia
No doubt this is the match of the week as we are treated to one more week with a showdown between sides in the top four before we get a week to catch our breath. West Van suffered their first loss of the year last week against Rino's in somewhat controversial fashion. A second yellow card to the former Troller's Andrew Milne set off a mass protest that resulted in several further yellow cards for dissent and West Van manager Andy Bramley being sanctioned as well. West Van also had two penalties awarded against them that made the difference in a tight 3-1 loss. No doubt the North Shore boys were quick to blame the referee, who in this case was the Rubin Smiliv who, while very experienced, is no stranger to controversy. The fact is that the result is now final and the Amblesiders will need to quickly put it behind them and reset to face the team that took their place at the top of the table, Croatia. After starting quietly, Croatia are now on a five match winning streak and their only loss of the season was on Opening Day. In addition to sitting atop the standings, Croatia now also posses the joint best defensive record in the league, along with West Van. So while this sets up as a fantastic contest between two top teams, it should not necessarily be expected to be high scoring. The Europeans have managed to come through with important goals at important times to win them matches this season, which is the hallmark of a championship side. Leading the way is Daniel Davidson who has six goals for Croatia and is seemingly having a much better go of things in his sophomore VMSL season after struggling last year to replicate the Golden Boot winning form he had previously produced for Abbotsford in the FVSL. West Van look to have found a reliable goal threat as well this year, something that has eluded them in previous seasons, in newcomer Eoin Mccormack. He too has six goal so far this campaign and has finally provided a much needed offensive complement to West Van's trademark stingy defending. Easily a match that could go either way here, and one that could well set up as a draw given how cagey both teams have a tendency to be. However, Croatia just seem to be in the grove at the moment and finding ways to deliver the goods week in and week out, so if anyone is going to posses the ability to create a moment of magic and take all three points in this match, it seems likely to be them.

Guildford FASA v Rino's Tigers
Following their loss to Coquitlam, FASA have now lost five matches in a row and are sinking down the standings like the Titanic. Had they found a way to get some sort of result against Metro Ford that would have at least prolonged the relegation battle, but now that they are behind the Tri-Cities side, and with Coquitlam having the chance for another result this week against fellow relegation threatened side Columbus, it is tough to see where FASA are going to find the points to catch back up. True, they are currently ahead of CCB and they play CCB again in a couple of weeks when the schedule resets and they did shock CCB on Opening Day, accounting for one of their two wins this year. Realistically, though, nobody is expecting CCB to remain at the bottom much longer, especially with their purported college signings joining the team over the next few weeks. It therefore seems likely that we have already established the two clear favourites for the drop in FASA and Columbus. Things could of course change, that is why we play the games, but the stats are not promising for these two sides. They have given up the most goals against in the league and are the only two teams with negative goal differences in the double digits. It is not going to get any easier for FASA this week against Rino's who have come through the gauntlet against the top sides and now get the chance to make some hay against the bottom of the table with matches against FASA and Metro Ford before the reverse fixtures begin and there is a suddenly monumental tilt with Croatia on the cards. This week should be fairly straightforward with leading scorer Farivar Torabi likely eyeing the opportunity to pad his stats and close some ground on suspended Golden Boot leader Matlash Vladyslav from White Eagles.
