Both the FASA goals and some other action from their win over CCB yesterday. Don't have Gindo's goal for CCB as flag went up for offside so didn't hit record as he ran through on goal. Only for ref to give goal. Lesson learned. Always play to the whistle. even when filming matches!

They really played that!! They had a DJ in the beer garden playing songs as teams came out and during matches.

Not sure if Champs League tune was played for all the games or just for CCB as the Provincial Champs were in the house :p

The goalie was distracted was yelling at his defenders just one second before shot came in he did everything wrong easy save for a good goalie

Yes word of CCBs shock result reached me. Have to say I saw the side that CCB put out to start the game and I am fairly certain the only guy on the field from the Prov final was Gindo and he, of course, was playing for Rino's back then.

The party line was they were "resting guys for Nationals." Wouldn't be surprised to perhaps see a protest though as FASA were shambles with no team list, no IDs etc. at the start so possibly some player eligibility issues...

I have recommended numerous times that VMSL finds a way (and it is very easy to do) to have (on VMSL web page) a list of all registered players for each team along with their pictures. That way, at least, it should be very easy to check whether a player is registered or not.
This would also help to alleviate certain issues that happen (at the beginning of the season there are no ID cards and the team cannot be blamed for it, cards not returned to the team manager after the game, etc.).
If FASA were without IDs then it is probably due to some "technical" issues caused by VMSL administration. Hard to believe the league would allow them to play without ID cards without a really good reason.

Anyway, whether CCB played their 2nd team or not against FASA it is still shocking result especially after hearing about poor preseason results by FASA. FASA may be better than anyone expected.

The other result worth mentioning is that West Van beat BSWE "only" 2:1 and the winning goal was scored in injury time. A lot of people expected an easy win for West Van in this one but it was obviously hard to get those 3 points.

The VMSL hasn't had physical ID cards for two years. The issue was that FASA is mostly all new players and they were unfamiliar with league operations meaning they did not get all their paperwork in on time, not enough personnel with access to the team account, etc. I believe in the end they were eventually able to access their digital ID cards at the field and were heavily fined by the league for their lack of organization.

Hopefully they got a large fine for this. Seems to me that CCB could protest the game?

Anybody know what the story with Luke O'Shea not playing in goal this week for CCB was? He is in the 11 that walk out for the handshake with a #1 taped onto his black shirt and then BOTH he and the other keeper are on the field for the moment of silence as it looks like the whole CCB bench went out for that with staff included. He was also in the Starting 11 photo posted by CCB on Instagram, but in the first highlight @GoF posted he is already on the bench, though he looks to be moving fine as he helps to coach. Did he get hurt or was this some sort of pre-planned rest sub? Or did he not actually start the game??

He split his lip really bad, like right up to his nostrils, at Nations Cup this year.
Which I'm not sure how long that would take to heal, but he got sliced up pretty good there.

Some eye-catching results on Opening Day, with FASA stealing the headlines thanks to their upset of CCB. However, all the games were tight which makes predictions rather difficult going forward until the table begins to sort itself. Week 2 looks clear as mud as well, but let's see what we can come up with...

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 2

Columbus v Rovers Hurricanes
One team that came just about exactly as advertised on Opening Day was Columbus. The Italians had plenty of hard work and industry to go along with their enthusiasm for being back in Premier and their dozen or so man bench-mob. Unfortunately, what they did not have was goal scoring, which was tipped to be their challenge coming into this season. They earned promotion based largely on solid defensive efforts and timely goals against the teams around them in the table, while padding their stats against the bottom feeders. At the top tier though, while the compete level is still their, the quality of opposition has increased exponentially and, without goals at the front end of the pitch, the pressure on the Columbus defenders becomes immense. Case in point, Rovers. Even with two of their top weapons in Nick Soolsma and Pavi Dhillon held off the score sheet, they found a goal off a set piece before another of their top performers, Cam Hundal, iced the game in their Opening Day win against Norvan. Meanwhile, Columbus were suffering the exact opposite. A screamer from Paul Bahia after 15 or so minutes might not be something they can legislate for but then, even when Columbus were controlling things and pushing to get back into the match, that next level quality came to bear with former Whitecap Sahil Sandu salting things away. This is likely the formula we are going to see from Columbus all season. They effort and the defending will be there, but unless they can find a way to goal, they are essentially just waiting to lose. Likely this game plays out similarly to the matches these sides were involved in last week, meaning it will be a close affair, but expect Rovers to have enough quality in the crucial moments to bag the points.

Coquitlam Metro Ford v Croatia
Neither of these sides managed to score a goal in their first game of the season, however, the Tri-Cities boys held on for a point whereas Croatia capitulated late to Rino's and were left with nothing. Clearly neither side was at their best, particularly champions Croatia, who are obviously still looking to fill the hole left by midfielder Colin Jaques returning to the VISL. Neither teams big guns, in Carlo Basso for Metro Ford and David Malamura for Croatia, were firing on day one, but you would not expect them to be barren for long. The question, though, is after a cat and mouse start to the season for both groups, is either willing to come out and get after the other team, or will both be sitting back and looking to counter punch. Creating an impetus is not exactly Croatia's style. In winning the VMSL title last season, they were not exactly taking on and shirking off all comers as other recent champions Rovers Tigers and Coquitlam a few season ago. Instead, Croatia just short of plodded along and, when the chance presented itself at the end of the year, they were in a position to claim it. That sort of seems like how they approached their match against Rino's last week, except that the crucial chance never fell to them. Metro Ford, on the other hand, seem to finally be blooding some youth into their aging core. That does not mean that there are not places for Basso, veteran keeper Dillan Fogliato or the ageless Steve Kindel, but it does mean some new faces getting use to performing at this level. I do not think both sides will fail to score again this week, but I am also not convinced that there is enough to separate these sides. Of course it will likely be close, so one goal either way could shade it, but I will say it finishes level regardless.

Club Inter EDC v Pegasus
Despite a disappointing season last year, and a summer that offered up more questions than answers, Pegasus looked remarkably put together in their first performance of the season. True, it was against newly promoted Columbus and, no, it is not as though they dominated the match from start to finish. Still, the horsemen showed the quality and pedigree that was absent for most of last season. No doubt that bringing Yassin Essa back into the fold from rivals CCB help in this respect. While not directly on the score sheet, Essa was the catalyst for most of Peg's offense and will likely continue to provide that as the weeks go on. Offense is the main concern for Chinter. Their opener was a fairly banal nil-nil against Metro Ford, which speaks to a larger problem for the "Italians." They were disproportionately reliant on target man Mohammed Habib to supply their points last season, and, even though he has returned to the fold after finishing last season abroad, Inter still do not look like they have anyone to help lessen the goal scoring burden. When Habib is kept off the score sheet, it appears that EDC will again struggle for results this season. Pegasus are riding a wave after a good start to the season and should be full of confidence. If Habib gets hot, then maybe Inter get something out of this one, otherwise you have to think it is a great chance for Peg to start with back to back wins.

CCB LFC v Rino's Tigers
Easily the MOTW here with all eye looking to see how CCB respond to their shock loss to FASA on Opening Day. The prevailing wisdom was that CCB were "resting" players as they get ready for Nationals, but there is quite likely to be a knee jerk reaction after the squad under performed last week. Rino's will certainly be a step up from FASA and new toy Farivar Torabi, who did in indeed make the jump from Burnaby in Div. 1, already has supplied his new team with points. His goal was the difference in their Week 1 triumph over Croatia and he will be looking to continue his goal scoring form again this week. However, one has to assume that the "resting" for CCB will be brought to an abrupt halt and CCB will have everybody who is healthy and available at their disposal back home in Surrey this week. This, of course, guarantees nothing, particularly against a strong Rino's side who started brightly last week, but it should, at least, promise the neutrals some enthralling watching. CCB are surely targeting the title this season and dropping points against FASA on day one is likely recoverable. However, losing again and staying rooted to the foot of the table, already six points back of Rino's, as well as potentially Rovers and West Van, is unenviable even this early in the season. After last week, this sets up as a statement game for CCB so I would expect them to made said statement.

NorVan v West Van
The first North Shore derby of the season is upon us as NorVan welcome neighbours West Van. Both sides looked to be a bit rusty coming into the season, however, West Van ultimately emerged with the points in their opener against promoted Burnaby, while NorVan fell 2-0 to Rovers. UBC product Stefan Colbow was a big piece for NorVan at the weekend, though it was somewhat of a surprise to see him in NorVan colours with most of UBC's product being herded into their new "Varsity B" team playing under the "Richmond" moniker. Perhaps his time with that program has come to an end but, regardless, NorVan will need him to continue with his strong performances as well as for Blake Burgeon to show that, in spite of the fact that he is another year older, he will still be able to score regularly at this level. He was NorVan's leading scorer by some margin last season, but he was snuffed out in Week 1. West Van, on the other hand, needed a last gasp winner to save themselves the embarrassment of dropping points at the first time of asking to a newly promoted side. Slow starters in recent years, the former Trollers will no doubt just be happy to already have three points in the bank. The title has to be their goal this year and for a team that generally gets stronger as the week roll by, if they can make it two wins from two, they will be well on their way to contending at the top. Based on the first round of matches, there is not reason why the Amblesiders should not be favoured over their local rivals. Anything can happen in a derby, but the safe money is on West Van coming through in this one.

Burnaby Selects White Eagles v Guildford FASA
An early season relegation six-point in this one you have to think. Even though both sides started the season brightly with decent showings, long term it is unlikely the outlook for their seasons has changed. FASA of course took the league by storm on Opening Day when they beat CCB, but, the Surrey side was hardly at its best. True, you can only beat the side in front of you, but, while the points were a fantastic achievement, it is not likely people are suddenly picking FASA to contend at the top. It is a long season and their young players will need to continue to put in near personal best performances weekly if they are to remain competitive. Signing veteran Ramsey Alfantazi from Division 2 FC Serbia is a solid pick up to help insulate some of FASA's younger players, but it remains to be seen if he can be productive at this level. On the other side of the ball, White Eagles were perhaps hard done by not to come away with something from their first match at this level against West Van. The former Serbians looked threatening on the counter attack, but, despite having chances, they were only able to penetrate the West Van goal on one occasion. Those are the fine margins that can comeback to haunt you at this level. With time ebbing away, Burnaby seemed to struggle for fitness with several players cramping up. This proved their undoing as right at the death the West Van attacker had the legs to get behind the White Eagles back line and steal the points. Burnaby will surely not be over the sting of that loss and should be able to use that as motivation this week. Their physical and pacey counter attacking style will also match up well against FASA this week. This game is a bit of a toss up but I will give the nod to a White Eagles side with a point to prove at home on a Sunday night.

2-1 win for Rino's over CCB at Newton tonight. Tigers took the lead with a penalty in around the 14th minute. CCB tied it up from the spot a couple of minutes before half time. Rino's retook the lead a few minutes into the start of the second half and saw it out fairly comfortably despite having Smychenko sent off midway through the second half for a second yellow. Both teams had chances to score after that but squandered some good opportunities.

CCB brought some of their rested guys back for this one but to no avail. No points now for them to start the season and six out of six for Rino's.

Here's some highlights from last night's CCB-Rinos game. Missed most of Rino's second as getting a chocolate bar out of my bag for my Scottish diet!
