I would tend to agree with you partially. A few premier teams are really well coached and have very skilled and talented players. However, it used to be way better. This is at least my recollection. I used to watch their games as an spectator, and I also referee a few. The games were better in the past, and I enjoyed quite a few. Now not so much. Quite a few players and teams are not playing a "Premier" amateur level. You can see by the score differential.
have you coached any of the teams mentioned before?

"With Surrey adding an average of 1,000 new residents per month, as of February 2017, the population of Surrey can be estimated to have already increased further to 525,000. It is expected that Surrey will surpass Vancouver in population to become the largest city in BC by 2030."
This a huge increase in population.
On the other hand, the average Vancouver housing prices will hit close to the 5 million mark. As we know the wealthy usually do not play soccer. Either the VMSL changes or the FVSL will take over.

Heard from a little birdie that CJ got a red card. He refused to leave the field. Ref called it

Did anyone have further details on this one? As in did CJ refuse to leave the field meaning that he literally would not get off the pitch; or did he just stand on the other side of the fence and continue shouting, etc., or....?

Who was the man in the middle? Presumably this all happened rather late in the game given it was 5-3? Was it straight red or second yellow? Bad tackle, dissent, foul language???

Teams are starting to pick up steam as we reach the end of the first month of the season. Early indications are that this season should be a tight race at the top of the league, as opposed to a few recent years when it has been, essentially, a one horse race with maybe one outside challenger. It should make for compelling watching as we go through the weeks, though it can make for difficult predictions!

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 4

Coquitlam Metro Ford v Rino's Tigers
It was a statement result for Metro Ford as they were able to contain the high flying CCB in a 2-1 win. They also got their first non-Carlo Basso goal of the season as Carson Gill potted one of their markers this week. Coquitlam may not be the automatic title contender that they were a few seasons ago, but, if they are able to continue to grind out results like this, they should remain relevant into the New Year and be in the thick of the Provincial Cup discussion, as opposed to desperately trying to chase their way back into it like last season. Rino's had a bounce back week of their own as they recovered from their shock 2-1 defeat to Richmond by seeing off struggling new boys Guildford 3-1. Perhaps they would have been seeking a slightly more dominant performance, but surely they are just happy to be back to winning ways. Both these sides are trying to prove they belong among the elite of the VMSL, so both will surely be targeting this fixture as one that can send a message to the rest of the league. This game could go either way, with each team having game breakers who are capable of winning their side the match. The decider for me is the fact that Rino's have looked susceptible to conceding goals, where as Metro Ford have only been scored on once this season. I think it will be a tight game and, based on early results, the Tri-Cities boys look to be more comfortable in that type of environment.

Club Inter EDC v CCB LFC
Most definitely the MOTW here, likely Match of the Season to this point. After their 5-0 walkover of Campo last week Inter are now the lone perfect team left standing in the VMSL's top flight. This is because CCB slipped up at home, losing 2-1 against Coquitlam. With their all star cast, CCB looked almost invincible through the first two weeks of the campaign, but were brought down to earth by Metro Ford. They have a chance to bounce right back to the top of the table however, if they can beat Inter. That of course is a task easier said than done, especially with the way Inter are cruising at the as, not only are they unbeaten, but they have yet to concede a goal. The play of Habib has also been a revelation, as he has taken the VMSL by storm in his return, racking up five goals over the opening three games to lead the early Golden Boot standings. True, Inter have not had the most difficult schedule to begin the year, though they must be given credit for winning the games in front of them and coming out on top in their 1-0 win over Coquitlam showed their pedigree. So all that sets up to make this one a cracker, but then you add in the fact that CCB's summer recruitment bonanza raided Inter for the likes of Milad Rahmati, though he remains suspended, as well as top scorers Milad Mehrabi and Dzenann Bezdrob. Likely further approaches were made to other Inter players as well, Bryan Fong is one who was rumoured to have been approached. Add that dynamic to this mix and you set up for one heck of a match. Hopefully the drama also leads to a spectacle of great play, but, regardless you know the comments between the benches and the players will be flying, along with the tackles, one imagines. It's the #EvilEmpire against the #DarkSide for bragging right as well as first place. As for a winner, Inter have always loved big games where egos can play a bigger role than talent and this certainly fits the bill. They are also top of the league at the minute, though stiffer test are still to come, but still, that deserves to be respected. I'll tip "Chinter" to take this one, but hopefully, regardless of the outcome, it leaves with plenty of talking points.

Pegasus v West Van
Things are going from bad to worse out in Surrey where Peg will now have to deal with what is surely to be a lengthy suspension to their talisman, Chetan "CJ" Jhooty. Already without a point to put to their names yet this season, CJ's refusal to leave the field after being sent off against local rival Rovers in their 5-3 loss will not likely be looked upon lightly by the league. Then again this is the VMSL, so who knows what kind of precedents the discipline committee will be looking to set. Regardless, CJ returning to the Pegasus fold was their marquee off season acquisition and the Surrey boys have struggled with him in the line up and you cannot imagine that his absence, especially if it does end up being for a significant period of time. Heading firmly in the opposite direction at the moment are West Van. The former Trollers have bounced back from a heart breaking opening day loss to Rovers with a pair of wins including a massive 1-0 victory this past week over fellow title hopefuls Croatia. The North Shore side have their tales up at the moment and that is the last thing Peg need to see coming across the bridges to see them out at Newton, especially with the rate the Surrey side are conceding goals at the minute. This one looks straight forward for West Van.

Richmond v Rovers Tigers
Richmond failed to make it back to back wins after their stunned Rino's Tigers, as they fell 3-1 at the hands of newly promoted NorVan last weekend. It has to go down as a missed opportunity for the boys from below sea level against a team that shapes up as a fellow relegation contender. Impressive, but also somewhat concerning for Hibs, is the fact that veteran goalie turned striker Brad Caldwell has netted four goals in three games. The concern though comes when you realize that is the entire total of Richmond's offense to this point in the season. Last week should have emphasized that there will be no easy games at this level for Hibs new younger players and welcoming the defending VMSL and Provincial Champions, Rovers Tigers, to Minoru will certainly be a stiff test. This, in fact, is Rovers final league tune up before the plane leaves for Saskatchewan and Nationals, so you can expect the Surrey boys to want to finish this game feeling like they are firing on all cylinders. They were in a bit of a dog fight with rivals Peg last week, but, despite the game being abandoned, I would expect that result to hold, given it was Peg who caused the abandonment. Still, I suppose there is a question of just how much time was remaining. Regardless, Rovers can worry about that later. Right now it is about getting their ducks in a row before Nationals and a win over Richmond should help to do just that.

Campo Atletico v Croatia
Handed arguably the toughest schedule to begin the season of any team in Premier, there will be no respite for Campo this week as Croatia are on the docket. Making matters worse is that the Europeans will arrive in a foul mood after suffering their first setback of the season last time out against West Van. Campo have been well off the pace through three weeks of the season as they sit bottom of the league with no points and just a single goal to show for their efforts. It would be stunning to see them right the ship this week against a Croatia side that will be looking to keep pace at the top of the league. That being said, next week Campo face the vaunted offense of CCB so, there is really no just weathering the storm, the Burnaby side will need to find some points from somewhere and, preferably, sooner rather than later. I can't see them coming this week, however. Watch out for a stats day for the Malamura's of the world in this one, the score line could get ugly.

Guildford v NorVan
A fixture that was on the Division 1 schedule this time last season. NorVan won both those meetings last year, including a 5-1 thrashing in early March. Perhaps it is no surprise then, that, of these two newly promoted sides, it is NorVan who have settled in and got their feet under them with a pair of wins while Guildford have looked anything but capable at this level so far. It could be argued that NorVan have had the easier schedule to begin life at this level, but, if Guildford are reaching for the excuses already, it is shaping up to be a long season for the Surrey crew. NorVan come into this one in great form, on the back of two victories in a row and surely eyeing up a third win on the spin against the only team they will play this season that finished below them last year. If Guildford were looking for a life line than this is as close as they are likely to get. They know NorVan are newly promoted, just like them, and if they are serious about staying up they need to show they have what it takes for a relegation battle. That means dropping the results from the other weeks in the bin and finding a way to get up for this game because these points could be the ones that make the difference in February. To be honest though, I am not sure Guildford have that kind of resolve in them, or at least I will need to see it to believe it. NorVan are on a high at the minute and I expect them to ride that wave to another victory here.

Comfortable 3-0 win for Croatia over Campo yesterday. They had a lot of chances to make it at least double that. Campo need a striker badly if they want to stay up. Lot of new faces on their team it seemed.

The goals and some other highlights.

At 1:21, a crime against fashion is committed. Wrong color under-armor AND a headband. Fine this team.

Rovers are off at Nationals which means respite for Guildford who are toiling down at the bottom of the league. No perfect records any longer as things are tighter than a new pair of shoes in the rain at the top of the league. Long weekend or not, the VMSL marches on into October, I guess we can all be thankful for footy together!

Completely Baseless Prediction - Week 5

NorVan v Coquitlam Metro Ford
As anticipated, NorVan look like they should be able to do enough to stay in this league. In fact, given how dismal Guildford ans Campo are at the moment, they may have already done enough. It was another massive three points for the North Shore side this past week over their promotion cousins Guildford by a score of 4-2 and, having already beat struggling Premier mainstay's Pegasus, NorVan now turn their attention to another bastion of this level, Coquitlam. Metro Ford have had some what of a Jekyll and Hyde start to the season as they beat lowly Campo, lost narrowly to top of the table Inter, bounced back with a win over all-star CCB and then were absolutely thumped last time out by Rino's. Tough then to get a read on this new regime at Metro Ford, but safe to say they won't be automatically reverting to the dominance they enjoyed a few seasons ago. If NorVan are beginning to look up the table, and after three wins on the spin why wouldn't they, then these are games to target for points. A win here and suddenly the lens of their season is now focusing on, perhaps, trying to get into the Provincial Cup converstation (especially if the VMSL is able to get a seventh berth back...). Coquitlam know from last year that if they want back into the post season tournament that the points at the start of the season count just as much as the points at the end. A newly promoted team is likely exactly the sort of side that the Tri-Cities boys need to be picking up the points from if they are going to finish in the top half. It sets up as a good encounter given both teams are surely going to get after it. I'll tip CMF do continue their roller coaster early results.

Croatia v Pegasus
Well Peg finally stopped the rot against West Van last week, digging out a draw for their first points of the season. It remains to be seen if this can prove to be a demarcation point for the horsemen and they will be able to get their season into gear, or if it will simply be a minor blip on the radar. Meanwhile last week, Croatia were passing GO and collecting their $200 away to Campo in a routine 3-0 win. The Europeans are among a group of four teams that sit one point off Inter for first place and will be keen to continue to show that they belong in the conversation with the big boys at the top end of the table. Credit to Pegasus, as the Surrey boys did not snap their poor run of form against one of the bottom teams, but instead put up a result against a West Van side with similar ambition to Croatia. Interesting to note it seems that the VMSL has a new policy on red cards that players will remain suspended until they attend a discipline hearing, however long that might take. That leaves Pegasus still without a pair of bodies who are currently on the naughty list, including CJ, but, then again, it did not seem to hurt them last week. Still too early to rule on whether or not they can be taken seriously as a top side in the league so Croatia will remain favourite here, but I would suggest that the Burnaby based side would do well not to take a potentially resurgent Peg lightly.

CCB LFC v Campo
If you have a weak stomach you might want to look away from this match as it could get ugly. Having already given up a whopping 14 goals through just four games this season, Campo must now head to Newton to take on CCB's high powered offense. The Burnaby side haven't had a sniff through the opening weeks of the season, only mustering a single goal, and you have to wonder how morale is in their camp. A seemingly resurgent Pegasus are next up and then another foreboding fixture against a high power offense in Rino's. Likely this could get worse before it gets better. CCB have not won for two weeks, so the Surrey boys should be in a rather ornery mood. Not much to analyse here; potentially double digits.

West Van v Richmond
The North Shore boys cannot be pleased as they granted struggling Pegasus their first point of the season in a 2-2 draw last weekend. That result leaves West Van outside the main chase pack at the top of the table, on seven points instead of nine. Conceding further ground is always less than ideal, but even more so now given that, should they fall farther back, the issue becomes less a matter of the points that they will need to make up but more so an issue about the volume of teams that they need to make the points up on. Definitely a chance for a bounce back opportunity against a Richmond side that were embarrassed by Rovers Tigers in their final tune up before Nationals by a 7-0 score line. That being said, the last time Richmond were thoroughly thumped they responded by stunning Rino's Tigers the next week. Outside of that one result though, Hibs have looked well off the pace this season and it would seem that the boys from below sea level are headed straight into the teeth of a relegation fight. Their veterans will know, however, that the key to survival is picking up the occasionally cheeky point here and there throughout the schedule and, if they come with the right attitude and capitalize on their chances, though they may be few and far between, they might just get a result here. West Van may be out of sorts at the moment, so perhaps an opening there for Richmond, but the former Trollers remain favourites in this one.

Rino's Tigers v Club Inter EDC
MOTW here with Rino's coming in hot to take on the current league leaders knowing a win will take them to the top of the table. Rino's spanked Metro Ford 5-0 in Coquitlam and that is the kind of lopsided scoreline that likely has not been seen in the Tri-Cities for quite some time. Declan Rodriguez buried four goals to catapult himself to the top of the Golden Boot race and now the hungry Tigers will turn their attentions to Inter. To say there is no love lost between these two sides would be like saying Wiley Coyote is just not super fond of the Roadrunner or that oil and vinegar would rather not interact if possible. The two teams hate each other; the players, definitely the managers, probably their "corporate sponsors...", everyone. The last time these two met it ended with a pair of red cards and a bust up outside the dressing rooms, for which Milad Rahmati is still suspended. All that eventually devolved into the ITC debalce that would consume all of amateur soccer in BC. Yes, Inter has gone through some structural changes and had a few players in and out the door since last year's Imperial Cup semi, but that animosity will still be there, especially between the key figures. Inter have emerged from their merger to lead the VMSL's top flight through the first month of the season. While they can no longer claim a perfect record after their 1-1 draw with CCB last time out, they remain the lone undefeated side in Premier. Habib has been usurped atop the goal scoring charts by Declan, but he has still had a phenomenal start to the season and will be looking to cut into that deficit. The amount that both these teams will want to win this game because of what it means to them personally is huge, but this year it is going to have massive ramifications on the table as well with both these sides gunning for a league title. Inter have been constant but perhaps Rino's, at their best, are in a league of their own. The question is, which Rino's side will turn up, the one that looked unstoppable in thrashing Coquitlam? Or the one that slumped to a loss at lowly Richmond? Too many variables for a solid prediction, so I will turtle and pick a draw here.

Norvan 0-0 MetroFord
Croats 3-1 Peg
CCB 8-2 Campo

It's early in the season but I'm going to take a risk here and make the bold prediction Campo will be relegated.
