Also a few teams joining as of the next round, thanks to seeding and byes.

PCOV Europa (D3A, 1st) vs. FC Serbia (D3B, 1st) looks particularly tasty.

Have Burnaby Selects and Tanoa thrown their toys out of the pram?

So was the US Open Cup improper last year when the USL affiliate teams of MLS clubs were playing?

It detracts from the tournament, in my opinion. And yes, I'm aware that reserve teams play in domestic cups in countries like Germany and Spain.

If you weren't aware, the USSF has barred MLS reserve teams from participating in the US Open Cup as of the 2016 competition.

also, why not seed everybody, or at least more than 4....

I personally like random draws, but it seems odd that the eight clubs that skip to the next round are comprised of four top seeds and four (seemingly random) byes.

What's the reason for not using the top eight seeds? To add an additional element of chance?

Because that's how they roll in BC Soccer.

It follows all the other competitions really with 4 seeded teams - the Imperial cup is the same as is the Provincial Cup I believe.

I can think of some reasons not to have the CAT teams in the tournament sure, but how does it "detract from the competition"?

The cream should rise to the top no?

Call me an Anglophile, but I don't enjoy watching stiffs in cups. ;) There's a reason the CAT system is kept separate from promotion and relegation; should that perhaps not that also apply to cup competitions?

Rino' Cat A 2006 winners Div 2 Cup
2006 winners Provincial B
Also 2nd to shaheen 1-0 final Div 2 cup
Also 2nd to Richmond FC PKS Div 2 cup
First time a VMSL had won B cup
This season 3 very good teams in cat
Surrey , Westside , Rinos
All depends on draw sometimes
Top teams knock each other out in early rounds
Watch out for campo , merolama
Bby 2 prem players

Ya I don't get your angle here (or what being an Anglophile has to do with anything). As @SmartCoach said there are some decent teams at the top of CAT that could probably be mid-table in Div 2. Obviously there are some less talented teams at the bottom, but if your argument is that they are diluting the competition then why don't you have a problem with the lower end Div 3 teams?

CAT is a stupid system and should be scrapped altogether, but let's not get into that here, it has been well covered in numerous other threads over the years. As the system exists though, I don't see how adding 10-12 extra teams is bad for the competition. Everybody wants to try their luck and apparently a CAT team has even won it before!

Back to the cup itself....so should we just give it to Campo Athletico now? God knows if all three of their teams win in Rnd1 there won't be enough room in the thread... ;)

1) I will tend to agree with the guys on the quality of some of the CAT teams. Westside, Surrey, Rinos, and Norvan have decent teams. In my opinion, they are division 2 calibre (it is my view, but keep in mind that I see regularly Division 2,3, and CAT games). I agree with the posters who have stated this. Those teams will make the CUP more competitive and interesting.

To make it more explicit and perhaps make the discussion lively. Westside CAT can easily beat on a good day Astro, Meraloma, and GN. The same goes for NorVan CAT and Rino CAT.

2) As for the CAT system, if you do not like it; then, let it be. Some of us, find it to be a very positive experience for our players. They enjoy the games and get better from them.

3) It is a though road for the three Campo teams. However, we are looking forward to the games with teams of other division. Specially, Rinos, Serbia, Europa, Lobbans, and also the people in this forum like Bowen, VAFC Celtic, etc.
Variety is good.

As for early predictions:
QuarterFinal 1 (Rino Fury Vs Westside)
QuarterFinal 2 (Burnaby Metro Vs Serbia)
QuarterFinal 3 (Snipers VS Astro)
QuarterFinal 4 (Strikers VS Campo Libre)

i.e. Burnaby Metro and Serbia and even Campo Libre are Division 2 calibre.
