Mr Base,

I noticed that Serbia United won 8 in a row (after 5 losses at the beginning of the season). It is really interesting that one team starts with 5 losses and then has 8 wins in a row (even winning against the teams which are still ahead of them). Are they strong enough to be promoted to Division 2?

Im looking forward to playing against Serbia this week .... but with the strength that Div 3 A holds, those 5 losses at the beginning of the season may be enough to hold them back in div 3.
Its unfortunate that the structure of this league is causing somewhat decent teams to get caught back in Div 3 and allowing weak Div 2 teams to remain in Div 2. We need more teams coming down and more teams going up ....

9 teams will be coming down from div 2 end of season
3 teams up from div 3
Div 2 goes to 2 Divisions of 12 ,div 3 will be 3 divisions of 10
You will get your wish next season

Can we lump the CAT league in there as well? Or just make it a div 4?

I mean seriously, what's the point of the CAT league? Half the teams are their own entity anyway. For teams that are affiliated with lower league teams there could be limited player movement (CATing), maybe maximum 3 players playing up per game? Max 1 player playing down?

I don't know, I'm not suggesting my scenario is perfect but I think it's worth discussing.

Canucks they will form more of a piramid to get to the top. Three div three next year. Year after only one or two teams will move up. It will get way harder to climb up the level list. It's all good in my opinion. All the clubs with selfish jokers will drop. Good thing in my opinion. Some guys take it forgrated what it takes to stay in div two. Fitness of some players is equal to over forty guys. They can not keapup with the play and than start hacking. Yellow cars start flying and a good game goes to shyte. Div three next year will be very tough to get out of.
Some clubs from Cat will most likely go to div three. I could see div four forming next year due to all the teams wanting to be able to play in B Cup and try to get to Provincial finals. See I would form only two 12 team groups in div three and I would form three 12 team groups in div four. Drop the Cat system. Let players play for a club callup. No callups for cup games unless player transfers to upper syde one game before the cup play.
It remains to be seen what board does. All I know Dino is trying hard again to go to prenmier and Smartcoach is trying hard to have two teams in div one. But for most all guys want is a good game it real does not matter what level. More fun brings better results. Just look at Max and B United. Since he got deep to help out club is climbing along. Nice to see.

Astro smash Estenghlal today. In first half score was like 8,9 zip for Astro. Astro boys play nice ground ball. With good speed and good target passes.
Chistmas drinks will taste beter for Astro men. With Matic in the midle and wide buildup Astro will not be easy to play against in a cup play.
Esteghlal needs to wakeup. And be part of their community.
Nothing like Persians we played before. Babak needs to send a guy or two to Estenghlal.

Exciting game tonight at Trillium with Cosmos beating Bowen in the final minute, 2-1. The pace was fast the whole game and both team pressed the other team hard. There was often very little time on the ball. Still, the loss in the waning minute had everyone gutted. Cosmos best player got a 1 v 1 defensive mismatch in the D, back to goal, turned and placed his shot perfectly .

The obvious difference was they got 2 goals on maybe 5 shots on target. We got one goal with 9 or 10 shots on target, including a post and a crossbar, and two missed sitters. Finish your chances, win the game. Don't and you take the ferry home with everyone grumpy. Having said that, we'll take a little solace out of the fact that we can see the team improving. This was another game we should have won but lost by a goal, largely due to lack of experience in competitive adult soccer. Hopefully, we can improve after Christmas and win a few of these close games.

Have a great holiday everyone!

9-0? Bunch of sheep firks eh Base? ;)

On a serious note though we actually agree on something- CAT needs to be reformed NOW! If only we could get those sheep firks at the league office to figure that out...

Canucks office must be left alone or your season will be god darn short. Old but still full of winiger. They will slowley improve the League. Rubin is inserting teams in Div three and he is trying to make changes needed. It takes time.
That's why I said div Four is needed. Playoffs are garbage as far as I am consern when it comes to moving up. Two top points up two lowest points down. Simple. All the way to div five.

Wishes for New Year. We all hope Trace gets a striker and holding mid. Than old Legion club will climb up the table. We wish Friends United stop looking and try to play harder. We all wish oldest Cookie scores twenty goals in Div three.
And most of all no Friday knight games. Half of the guys drink and drive. No more big dogs at the games they will rear smell and no little ones they try to piss on your pent leg.
Best wishes in the New Year to all. It is not fare that Serbia United has to play a game on Christmas day, and on a New Year.
Long brake is no good for Bosnia buisness will lack through the holidays. But they do have tall keeper and I think club will pick it up a bit. Div thtee look their way next year.
Any one of you playing Al Salvador in a cup game better work on shape. Two scooters can play ball. Cheers Don't drink and drive tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!

After a rain out last weekend, Boners were keen to kick off 2014 with a rematch against Astros. But, out of the blue, a run of bad luck and changing circumstances --flu, injuries, business travel, and a couple guys unexpectedly moving off island --meant we were only able to field 9 guys yesterday, against Astros full team. Astros are a good team and we'd have our hands full with them at the best of times, so it figured to be a very long day. Worse, our 9 guys included the bottom of our roster rather than the top.

Gave up a couple of quick goals in the first 10 mins then settled down and a combination of hard work, bad Astros finishing and some luck meant it was only 0-2 at the half. Still, I could see in the break that the second half wasn't going to be pretty. One of our guys forgot his boots and borrowed a pair to start the game and they were too small. At the half, his blisters were so bad he could hardly walk. Another guy, just back from a month of pneumonia over the holidays, hurt his back earlier in the game as was starting to seize up. But, the guys were determined to play hard and hope for some divine providence.

In the first 20 mins of the second half we actually created a couple of corners for ourselves and one decent scoring opportunity, but Astros were also creating chance after chance. I could see blister boy more or less becoming a pylon as the half progressed and aching back guy wasn't much better. I don't think either of them made a tackle in final 30 minutes of the match. Astros got their third around the 30 minute mark and the dam pretty much broke after that as we were more or less playing them with 7 guys.

They got another soon after, then 3 more in the final 10 minutes, which, at that point, was more or less shooting practice. So, a 7 zip loss and hopefully our low point of the season. On the positive side the boys showed some character and never quit and we'll take a very small bit of pride from the fact that we at least made Astros work for the win.

Falconetti's 4 Celtic bagel. Minds weren't too much on the game for some of us, as one of our masters' players, Carlos Moreno (aka Charlie Brown) suffered a massive coronary during our game this morning just as we were coming back onto the field after halftime. Thankfully there were enough educated people around who knew how to perform CPR and they were able to keep him alive until paramedics arrived and got him to VGH as quickly as possible, and thankfully still alive. He's critical but stable, and isn't going anywhere too quickly. Please PM me if you know him or his family, and I will pass messages along to them.

With that in mind, our masters' game was called at that, and some of the old boys (4 of us) stayed to help out Celtic, despite being more than slightly preoccupied, and the result showed.

First, best wishes to Falconetti's Carlos Moreno. Hoping he is recovering well.

On a far less important topic, we got slaughtered by Greencaps yesterday and any doubt about the fact that our team is completely crap at the moment were dispelled after the thrashings of the past two weeks. Greencaps were always a far better side than ours, even from the outset, but our team has really deteriorated from earlier in the season, due to a rash of injuries to our best players, work transfers and out of country student exchanges. We are currently in rebuilding mode and yesterday we only had 5 of the same guys on the pitch from when we played the Greens earlier in the season. Started with 9 (including one of the guys' younger brother up on a youth transfer), gave up a couple of goals, had a 10th player arrive around the 25 minute mark and gave up another goal, then an 11th player and we settled down a bit to play out the half. There were a few decent moments early in the second half but mostly the guys were getting beaten to every ball and couldn't keep it when we won it. Gave up a 4th mid half, then lost our fastest defender to an ankle injury and went down to 10 guys again and completely collapsed giving up 3 more goals. Gonna sign 3 more guys this week to fill the gaps, but we are moving backwards at the moment and are working hard to turn things around.

Two of our more serious injuries, of course, were 'drunk' injures where a couple of the party boys either fell off decks or tripped while wandering in the Bowen woods. It has been that kind of season. Have to say, despite it all, the team hasn't given up and we are still having a blast in the VMSL. What doesn't kill you....

RickG:

Thanks for the kind thoughts re Carlos. Just a bit of clarification though - he plays for VAFC's old boys, not Falconetti's. Thankfully for him and his family, his cardiologist at VGH pronounced him well enough to send home on Saturday afternoon. It's going to be a while before we see him near a field again even as a spectator, but the main thing is that he's still with us.

Re this weekend's game, Vancouver Strikers 5, VAFC Celtic 1. Game started out quite even, although Strikers got their first on a miscue. That was followed by a candidate for goal of the year, as our right back Steve K. hit a ball from the wing with the outside of his right foot that found the top corner from about 30 yards out. Made him look more Brazilian than Irish. Unfortunately, the Bhoys couldn't keep up with Strikers' finishing, and it ended 4-1 at the half. Too many small errors caused by too many induhviduals again...

2nd half was played very evenly, with only one more chance going the way of the Villains. Final was 5-1, but we really didn't feel that the scoreline was indicative of the balance of play. Strikers have a couple of good finishers, and are decent going forward from their midfield with substantial pace, but any team with shooting prowess and a bit of possesional skill will give their back line and not very mobile keeper a hard time.

Very glad to hear your bud is home, resting, and doing better.

Thanks for the game on Sunday, I thought it was played in a very good spirit with both teams trying hard until the end.

Dam wet and cold day. Trace was marching up and down the side of the field. Sicker than a three leged dog. On top of it Pacifica was on fire.
Trace is going to have some rebuilding over the summer months. Team plays hard but hates like hell to play as a unit. Somany guys go solo runs and turn the ball over. One good keeper and a guy in the midle of tha Park Athletic can climb up the standings.
Things look good for future for Athletic. On the other side Pacifica is headed towards over thirty five soccer in a near future. Nice to see Pacica turn it around in the last part of the season.
Alert sheep dog was out for a walk. Hot buns the same.

Started with 10, then went to 9 guys early on after one of our guys rolled his ankle, which meant playing nearly the whole game two short, for the 4th time this season. The boys worked hard the first half but gave up a goal midway through. That brought a bit of a response where the boys from the rock put in a decent 10 minutes before the halftime whistle and pushed the Cobras into their back third several times, generating some opportunities. But, in the second half the Cobras were knocking the ball around pretty much at will and smelled blood as our guys tired from chasing. Cobras got a second goal 20 minutes from the end and at that point, a few of our guys dropped their heads. The floodgates opened in the final 15 minutes. Ugh, another 7-zip trashing. Those goals we scored last week seem like a lifetime ago. But, even though we are a new team with growing pains, the boys will reload and hope to get a good turnout and have a better match next week.
