Well with three games to go, Royal City's loss to Rino's confirms that they will be heading back to Div. 3. I have to admit that I am slightly surprised by how much they struggled this season. Making the jump up always comes with some growing pains, but they were way off the pace. Interested to see where their club goes from here. I can't think they will operate two Div. 3 teams next season, especially with how much their Div. 3 team has struggled as well this season. Hopefully they can keep things going out in New West as there seems to have been a real drop off in men's teams from that end of town in recent years.

At the top, CMF Lupi cleared the hurdle that tripped them up on their first run through the table as they beat Strikers 4-0 this week. They still have a couple sticky ones against Bombastic and Meraloma to navigate, but they should like be able to see things out and leave 13th Legion as bridesmaids for a second consecutive season.

In 2B Greencaps look a little wobbly, as they returned from the holidays to get thumped 4-0 by Gastown in their first loss of the season. Perhaps the Irishmen are starting to tense up as they near the finish line as they only narrowly slipped past relegation threatened Twin Arrows 1-0 this past weekend. They have a tricky one with Shaheen this weekend and a hungry Metropolitan team circling. Those two still have a six pointer to play which means Greencaps cannot afford any more slip-ups, lest they open the door for Students. At the bottom, Sarajevo have, predictably, pulled their socks up and climbed out of the relegation zone. Bosna now occupy the basement and are looking more and more likely to be heading for an immediate return to Div. 3. They have lost six straight, two of which were forfeits, and in the four games they actually showed up to they have allowed 25 goals against. Still chances to put point on the board though with matches to come against fellow strugglers Euro, Twin Arrows and Sarajevo, but they had better pull their finger out soon if they plan on being around again in September.

Lost in all the focus on Cup play this week is the fact that the league has bumped up the Metropolitan/Greencaps game. Greencaps can clinch the division title with a win while a draw would mean that they need just a single point from their two remaining games to be guaranteed no worse than a one game playoff to decide the champion of the group. It really is must win territory for Metropolitan if they want to have a realistic chance of going back up to Division 1 at the first time of asking.

Looks like Students were not able to get the goal they desperately needed to keep their promotion hopes alive. Greencaps fail to clinch, but can do so this weekend with a win over Westside or if Metropolitan lose any of their last three games.

Huge stumble for 13th Legion as their draw with Strikers means that CMF Lupi need just two points to confirm promotion and the 2A title. In 2B Greencaps had their game with Westside PPD so the victory party will have to wait as Metropolitan put a beat down on Bosna to keep themselves mathematically alive. Bosna look to be set to join Royal City as the two automatically relegated teams; both immediately returning to Division 3. Some big six pointers this week as teams jockey to avoid the relegation playoff. Snipers leapfrog Twin Arrows out of the playoff place in 2B after edging them 2-1 while Sarajevo's resurgence marches on as they cast aside Gastownon Sunday. HK Hrvat continued their late season escape act with a win over FC Serbia who are not yet safe themselves in 2A, Astro, however, are all but safe after a massive win over VUFC who now sit second bottom.

The other race to watch is the battle for the 7 Provincial Cup spots. Of course two are reserved for the Div. 2 Cup finalists, but, presuming the final consists of teams from near the top of the table, the spots will be awarded based on the highest point totals, regardless of which pool the teams are in. However, because Sea to Sky dropped out, presumably it will be decided by Points Per Game, which means that, even with so few games remaining it is still difficult to calculate. Fortunately, Strikers are in the clubhouse, having finished their schedule in third place in 2A with 39 points
from 20 games; or 1.95 PPG. CMF Lupi and 13th Legion will finish ahead of them and qualify for the competition as well.

The equivalent of 1.95 PPG based on a 22 game schedule in 2B is 43 points. Metropolitan and Greencaps have already exceeded this mark and will qualify, while Gastown need one more win from their final two matches to hit the mark while Shaheen, if they win both of their remaining games, can only reach 42 points or 1.91 PPG. So it would appear to come down to Shaheen in 2B against Bombastic in 2A (unless Gastown completely drop the ball) for the seventh, and final, spot. Bombastic have their fate in their own hands as, if they take at least seven points from their final three games they will be level with Strikers on 39 points and assured of a place, pending the Cup results. Still lots of fascinating results to come trickling in and story lines to keep an eye on as teams get eliminated from the cup and finish off their league schedule!

The Provincial Cup and title contenders are all tied up this week due to the Cup schedule, but there are some big relegation games. HK Hrvat gets a chance to move closer to safety with a game against already relegated Royal City. The New West side's only win and points this season came in the reverse fixture against Hrvat. HK's main rivals in the relegation fight are VUFC and they play mid-table Meraloma on Saturday. In 2B BCT Punjab Tigers have called it a season and forfeit their final two games of the season. Hopefully the league threw the book at them and charged the maximum fines as that is really poor form. It did hand Sarajevo safety from relegation though and it has granted Bosna a valuable three points, bringing them back in touch with the rest of the relegation candidates.

Ya punjabs should get fined for that. Bosna are surely going down def the worst team in the 2b. The future doesnt look good for them if there struggling the field 11.

As we wait another week to settle things officially at the top of Division 2, things at the bottom are almost set.

In 2A Royal City have been relegated for some time now, but the battle for second bottom and the relegation playoff was still being decided. HK Hrvat pulled off the escape, as expected, and while Serbia have been less than inspiring for awhile now, VUFC have run out of track and will finish in eleventh.

In 2B, Bosna's loss to Sarajevo confirms that they will finish in last place and join Royal City in an immediate return to Division 3. Second bottom is still not quite settled, but Twin Arrows got a massive victory over Shaheen and have now vaulted over Euro FC. With their final match being against already relegated Bosna, it is looking very likely that Twin Arrows will survive by the skin of their teeth again after winning the relegation playoff last season. Euro's final game is against Greencaps A and, while they will likely have already won the title by that point, it is tough to see how Euro will come away with anything from that one. Snipers are not technically safe either, done for the season on 21 points, but the safe money is on Euro and VUFC playing off to stay in the league.

Bombastic losing last night to Serbia means they must win their final game this weekend against Meraloma to snap up the final Provincial Cup spot.

Shaheen are done with 39 points from 22 games (1.77 ppg); Bombastic need a win to get to 36 points from 20 games (1.80 ppg).

How many provincial spots awarded in Div.2?
7 total spots. 2 spots for div 2 league cup finalist. Top 2 teams from each div 2 pool, and last spot goes to the best third place team from either one of the div 2 pools. So now that the finalist for the league cup is the top teams from each pool, than third place teams from each pool get in. And last spot goes to the best 4th place team overall.

I was told only 6 teams from VMSL in 2018, due to some bizarre algorithm about player registration in the various leagues.

So our Div 2 Bulldogs ground out a 0-0 draw with Lupi this afternoon, giving 13th Legion some hope of catching them for the title and promotion.

However Legion then inexplicably went and lost 3-2 to VUFC who were destined for a relegation playoff regardless of the result...

Congrats Lupi on the league title and promotion.

I got a run in with our open team today and we got a 3-2 win over Legion. 3-0 at one point with two absolute rockets from way out. Our keeper made some big saves to keep us in the lead. They didn’t give up and scored two with about 15min to play. They pushed hard for the equalizer and were caught out 3 times on odd man rushes but we failed to capitalize.

I watched Legion play in the provincial b cup last year and they were definitely missing their key striker and winger today. Having said that, our team was bare bones and had to call a couple of us geriatrics to help out for the day.

The lads will have some confidence going in to their playoff game!

@machel perhaps you'll get the call to dress for the big relegation playoff too!

I’ll be ready if needed! Haha

Today was my first open age game since losing to your team in the provincial semifinal in extra time two years ago.
Pushing on 40 dude. Where did the time go?!?
