Division 1 continues to look like just about anybody's race, though "Richmond" have not shown much of an indication that they can be stopped as of yet. Still, over 50% of the table are within three points of the top after two weeks and it is likely that we will see that trend continue for at least a few more weeks before we can identify any potential favourites.

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 2

Westside Sierra v GN Sporting
We will call this one the MOTW with newly promoted Sierra proving a tough nut to crack at this level. Rino's needed an injury time equalizer in Week 1 and last week Westside A were unable to breach the vault at all. This defensive organization looks like it will serve Sierra well and with plenty of others already floundering, that alone likely appears enough to suggest they will be able to stick it out at this level. As more challenging at the top, they will need to find some more consistent offense. Sierra are yet to play from behind in the league so far this season, so it remains to be seen if they can remain as stout defensively if they are forced to go chase a game. GN look as though they will be in the mix at the right end of the table again this season. A solid home win over Rino's added to an easy opening match against Chinter B. This week looks like a fairly solid bell weather game for both teams and should provide an entertaining contest. If GN can score first that will really set the cat among the pigeons, but if Sierra get the lead look for them to potentially grind out a result. It could go either way, but I will give a slight edge to GN who perhaps have a slight edge based on pedigree.

Vancouver Strikers v VAFC Santos
Name change number two this season for Campo/Santos/VAFC. We shall see if this iteration brings about any improved results. After a decent enough opening week display in a three one loss to Lupi, Santos were smashed 5-0 by Burnaby Metro last time out, with Nassim Ajafri adding salt to the wounds when he got himself sent off late. Strikers have shown that they are going to be able to score goals at this level, which is less than ideal for a porous Santos side who have allowed eight against so far through two matches. Perhaps not as sure footed at the back end of the pitch compared to the front, Strikers might well be vulnerable if Santos can begin the game on the front foot. The problem is that you just cannot conceive of the Burnaby outfit being able to shut up shop if they do manage to get their noses in front. With Strikers riding the wave of their first win at this level, look for them to snag the points again here.

Club Inter EDC Burnaby v NorVan Storm
It looked like NorVan would indeed carry on this season as they finished the last when they fought back from 2-0 down against Burnaby Metro in Week 1. However, they were once again 2-0 down to newly promoted Strikers at home last week and this time there were to be no late heroics as they were beaten 2-1. The Storm will be hoping to avoid the kind of start that they had last season when they were rooted to the foot of the table for much of the first half of the season. Fortunately for them, Inter look a shambles at the moment. Chinter have conceded 11 goals through two matches, though they have faced a pair of top teams in GN and "Richmond." Now they will get a chance to play a team that is also struggling and it would be an understatement to say that they could really use a result in this one. It is tough to see how they will go about doing that though, despite their own struggles NorVan are surley favourites in this one.

Rino's Fury v Richmond Hibernian
Can anyone stop UBC? That is certainly the question being asked around Division 1 these days. Originally billed as a "development" squad, the names turning up on the score sheet through the first couple weeks of the season have a decidedly veteran/alumni feel to them. Taking nothing away from their two dominant performances to date, "Richmond" have played an Inter side that look destined for a relegation battle and a newly promoted team, who did actually manage to take the lead on them in a relatively even first half. This week will provide their first test against established Div. 1 opposition as Rino's, who have not looked at their best to start the season with only a draw to show for their efforts thus far, will provide, one assumes, a slightly higher class of opponent. Not sure that it will be enough to stop UBC in their tracks, but perhaps they will at least drag them down closer to Earth. Certainly if "Richmond" post another lop sided win this week, then we might be able to start talking about having just one promotion spot up for grabs this season.

Coquitlam Metro Ford Lupi v Westside FC A
Two wins on the spin to start the season for Lupi after they looked less than interested during the second half of last season. While they have not faced the stiffest of tests so far in Santos and Greencaps, you can only beat the teams in front of you. Westside too have beaten Greencaps, and by the same 3-1 scoreline as well. They were frustrated last week by a stout Sierra side and will no doubt be looking for an immediate bounce back. These two played out to a pair of entertaining scoring draws last season and look to be well matched against coming into this one. The safe bet here is likely on them splitting the points for a third successive encounter.

Burnaby Metro Atheltic v Vancouver Greencaps
It was a solid bounce back for Metro as, after blowing a 2-0 lead to NorVan in Week 1, they took their frustrations out on Santos to the tune of 5-0. Greencaps, meantime, look to have hit second season syndrome hard. Back to back 3-1 losses, the second coming after they moved their matches from the weekend to mid-week, presumably to accommodation some type of internal club event. It would seem that the Irishmen's priorities may lie away from the pitch at the moment. It is likely that before all is said and done Greencaps will get it together and put in the work to get the results that they need and a long term relegation battle is unlikely. However, I am not sure that will be this week against a motivated Burnaby side already playing catch up on a promotion race that they had hoped to be involved in from day one.

(yes this should be our signature....we have lost count of how many times we have gone to retirement, just to receive a call to go back...but we thought that the pundits and powers to be of the TTP....knew of the news by now.... a major unexpected change...that gave itself by chance....

....the young lads are learning quite fast and in due time they will start to pick up the points...no pressure or expectations for now...

LOL 8-0 to a team that just got promoted....... Time for a change of manger to right the ship

Things are still within touching distance for the majority of the league at the top of the table, however a few teams at the bottom are at risk of losing touch with the rest of the pack. There are definitely some big points up for grabs in the relegation race this weekend, while the picture at the top could change as well.

Completely Baseless Predictions - Week 4

Westside FC A v GN Sporting
There are a few intriguing match ups this weekend, but this is likely the MOTW. Westside bounced back with a 2-0 win over Lupi after falling to "clubmates" Sierra the week before. That leaves them on six points and three behind perfect GN who did what Westside could not and beat Sierra last week. A win for Westside here would real in at least one of the promotion spots, though likely Burnaby would leapfrog the pack a take over second place on 10 points. Still, it would leave a number of teams with the possibility of being within a point of the promotion places which would definitely make for a good watch for the neutrals out there. Last season Westside took six points off GN, despite finishing behind them in the table. In fact this particular fixture at Point Grey last season was GN's worst day at the office as Westside smashed them 7-0. Tough to see it being that one sided this time around, especially given that both these teams look intent on sinking their teeth into the promotion battle. I am betting this one will be nip and tuck and that these two will end up splitting the points, making neither of them happy.

NorVan Storm v Rino's Fury
It has been a tough start to the season for the Fury as they have only managed to pick up a single point through the first three games and certainly last week in a 4-1 loss to UBC/Richmond. NorVan know the feeling at they earned their first win of the season last week 2-0 over Chinter B. Both sides are trapped in Division 1, so losing ground on the promotion race will not be the worlds biggest concern, however, both will want to ensure they are not dragged into a relegation battle. That was the case for NorVan last season as they needed until the New Year to really kick things into gear a pull themselves off the bottom. Rino's have also been mired in slow starts over the years before, so panic will be far from setting in. Still though, you would expect perhaps a certain level of desperation to emerge as the club look to avoid going winless in the first month. These sides look well matched, so this one could go either way, but I think Rino's will have slightly more impetus to go out and get after this one which could just tip the scales in their favour.

VAFC Santos v Club Inter EDC Burnaby B
No idea what the plan at Santos is at the moment. Head Coach Eduardo Azmitia and his lofty ambitions for the program have taken an interesting and unexpected twist. Just weeks after merging with VAFC, and taking on an additional Division 3 team in the process, Azmitia has seemingly stepped away from front line management with the club. He is no longer listed as a contact in any capacity for either Div. 3 side and he lists himself only a "President" for the Division 1 side. In his place at the helm is Burnaby Metro Athletic "manager" Houman Taba as he is now listed as the "Coach" for VAFC Santos A and B. All this comes on the heels of an 0-0-3 start for Santos A, emphasized by an 8-0 loss to promoted Vancouver Strikers last week. What does this change at the top mean in terms of the on field product? No idea. I guess we will have to wait and see. Perhaps this new managment structure brings with it a fresh crops of players that can raise the level of the team, but right now there are way more questions than answers. All of this has to be music to the ears of also point-less Inter who have been only marginally less futile than Santos so far this season after they were again beaten last week, this time it was NorVan taking advantage of Chinter's hospitality. Maybe Santos will be reinvigorated by their new management and provide them with instant gratification in the form of three points. Based on everything that has happened so far in their world, it is tough to bet on that though.

Vancouver Greencaps v Vancouver Strikers
Speaking of struggles, the third team left without a point to their name after three rounds is Vancouver Greencaps. The Irish lads continue to spot their opposition two and three goal leads, which is far from a method for success. The preseason thought that perhaps Greencaps have spread themselves too thin looks to be accurate, at least so far this year. Their Division 2 side is also struggling with just a single point on the season to this point. Presumably Greencaps will pull themselves together at some point, but when that will come is unclear as there are certainly no signs of a turnaround being imminent. Maybe newly promoted Strikers will be the tonic that the Green-men need to get their season up and running, However, Strikers are in form off the back of a pair of wins and are seemingly having little trouble scoring consistently at this new level. That is not the best news for a Greencaps side prone to conceding goals and light on offense themselves. It is another match that Greencaps would surely consider winnable, but, on current form, they are likely underdogs.

Coquitlam Metro Ford Lupi v Burnaby Metro Athletic
Another compelling match has Coquitlam hosting Burnaby on Sunday. Lupi started with a pair of wins but were pegged back 2-0 by Westside last week. Burnaby Metro looked to be sputtering without star Farivar Torabi, who has evidently now returned to the club in a coaching capacity while he is busy clattering in the goals for Rino's Tigers in Premier, but have righted the ship and are sitting third at the minute. After blowing a 2-0 lead in Week 1, Burnaby got a free hit against Santos in Week 2 and they took full advantage. Last week they took car of business in beating Greencaps 2-0. Coquitlam also started last season well before falling away. Being ceilinged in at this level, it remains to be seen how much gumption they are interested in putting into challenging at the top of the table. Burnaby, on the other hand, are certainly aiming for promotion and this will likely be the best test of their credentials so far. Lupi are well organized and tough to breakdown, which may bring the sharpness of Burnaby's attack into the spotlight. With Torabi on the sidelines instead of the field, do they have someone to get them the key goal in a tight match? Until we see some proof of that, I will say the best they will manage is a draw in this one.

Richmond Hibernian v Westside Sierra
Rounding out the field this week is another game that promises to add some colour to the top end of the table. Sierra have enjoyed a mixed start, 1-1-1, since promotion, but their matches have all been close run affairs with just the odd goal in them. There has been nothing at all mixed about "Richmond's" start to the campaign though as they have come through the gates like a runaway train. The UBCers added another win to their 100% record last week when they beat Rino's 4-1. James Graham now leads the division with five goals in three games with teammate Sebastian Dzikowski hot on his heels with four goals. Will they continue this form and walk the league? Or is there a self correction on the way? It will be interesting to see how the results come out when UBC start to encounter the other "contenders" in the league. Sierra will surely approach this one with a game plan, but their first loss of the season, 3-2 to GN last week, cost them more than the points as influential midfielder Matias Guedes was sent off as well, meaning he will miss this week's contest. At full strength coming away with anything from this match was going to be an uphill battle, at diminished capacity it would be a stunner if Sierra were to pull this off.

Santos 1-8 edc. You would have to assume santos will fold and all results against them will be void??
How are all the santos teams so bad? The div 3 team seems to be getting a drubbing weekly too. Did everyone leave or they just the shitty Beatles?

I’m not a campo/santos apologist and I don’t miss soccer coach’s sociopathic rants, but can we talk about something else?
