Vancouver Whitecaps v Portland Timbers – The Cascadia Derby Winning Story In Pictures

Back to back baby!

Vancouver Whitecaps made it two straight wins for the first time in the Marc Dos Santos era, although any time you can get a win over your Cascadian rivals is always a day to celebrate.

It took an early Fredy Montero goal, his sixth all-time against the Timbers, Max Crepeau standing on his head, and some fantastic all-round defensive play to secure a 1-0 victory for Vancouver, moving them into the playoff places and top spot in their quest for a seventh Cascadia Cup.

AFTN photographers Tom (@ResidualImage) and Caroline (@FrogPhoto) were there to capture the action before, during and after the game. Here’s their “Story In Pictures”, with a full Flickr slideshow at the end.

The Portland fans made the Friday night trek in numbers

The Vancouver fans, not as much so

Your Whitecaps starting XI

The ‘Caps came out strong from the start and nine minutes in Russell Teibert found Fredy Montero

And the Colombian got his second goals in two games to fire the Whitecaps into an early 1-0 lead they weren’t to give up

Can you hear the Timbers sing?

Vancouver kept pressing and minutes later Ali Adnan showed some nice footwork in a fast break forward

His fierce shot took a deflection off Bill Tuiloma’s head on the way to goal and the ‘Caps came within inches of making it 2-0

Keeping the pressure on, Ali Adnan fired over from close range with the goal gaping

And you could see the anguish on the faces of the ‘Caps players as they feared that could be a crucial miss

At the other end though Max Crepeau was coolly dealing with everything Portland could throw at him

After impressive save

As the 35th minute rolled by, it was time for another supporters walkout in protest at the Whitecaps’ handling of abuse allegations in their former women’s team

This time they were impressively supported en masses by the travelling Timbers supporters

And the message was clear

Meanwhile back on the pitch, Max Crepeau and the Whitecaps defence were impenetrable

Portland kept pressing in the second half but Lucas Venuto had a chance to double the Whitecaps lead but blasted over

While Max Crepeau was still standing on his head at the other end

And all of the backline was getting in on the act

The final whistle finally came and joy erupted around BC PLace, both on and off the pitch

A win so good, it meant a double Humba in the Curva
