Though pre-season matches mean very little(at least that what Bucky says :)) , they have to have some merit especially when Premier teams are getting stuffed 6 - 1 by a Conference team. Wolves were lump-ed 6 - 1 by Morecambe, which can't bode well for the new boys of the Premiership.

Also, the Burnley/Leeds match turned ugly yesterday(Burnley beat Leeds 4 - 2) after several two-footed tackles in succession which led to a mini-brawl. The ref didn't give a single card but there could have been 4 or 5 reds for the tackles/shoving after them. Here are some more results from the last couple of days. Poor LEEDS are really going to struggle this year, as Viduka looks like he is on his way out, if anyone will pay the 10 million pounds, Leeds will be expecting......

ROVERS CRASH TO DEFEAT
Lorenzo Amoruso made his first appearance in a Blackburn shirt on English soil but the defender's presence was not enough for the Barclaycard Premiership side to avoid defeat at Oldham.

Rovers lost the match 2-1 at Boundary Park, although the result was of little consequence with the game arranged primarily to boost cash-strapped Oldham's coffers.

Paul Gallagher got on the scoresheet for Rovers but Scott Vernon and Paul Wheatcroft hit the net for the Latics, who raked in over £30,000 courtesy of a 3,750 crowd.

A second-string Leeds side claimed a 2-2 draw at near-neighbours Bradford Park Avenue. Isn't their whole team second string now?

Harpal Singh and Simon Johnson scored the goals for Peter Reid's side, who lost 4-2 at Burnley on Sunday.

First Division West Brom sneaked a 1-0 victory over Gresley Rovers thanks to a goal from wantaway striker Jason Roberts.

The forward has handed in a transfer request and as a result was part of Gary Shelton's reserve squad, with his experience earning him the only goal of the game and giving the Baggies victory in the Bass Charity Vase final.

Fellow First Division side Coventry beat nearby Tamworth 2-1 on their travels.

Mansfield beat St Blazey 3-1 while Second Division rivals QPR shared a goalless draw at Worcester City.

Third Division Hull beat North Ferriby 2-0 with goals from Danny Webb and Clayton Donaldson

First glimpse

FYI

Real Madrid play tomorrow (8am and 8pm, Fox Sports World Canada ) against some Chinese Select XI. Should be a training match but will be the first glimpse of D. Beckham and his disasterous move to Real Madrid.

Also, the MLS All Star game (without the best goalie in the league Pat Onstad  ) is also on at 3pm. Because Fox Sports world is on the TV 24hrs a day at my place we've been watching a lot of MLS. IMHO, it is getting better and the kids seem to like it.

I'll have to get them checked out!

Cheers

INTER 3 GALATASARAY 0 - OBAGOL TWO MUCH FOR TURKS
Friday, 01 August 2003 20:50:50
AMSTERDAM - Inter kicked off the fifth edition of The Amsterdam Tournament with a gritty 3-0 victory over Galatasaray tonight at Amsterdam ArenA.

Obafemi Martins proved too much of a handful for the Turks with two fine efforts, his former youth team companion Mario Rebecchi scoring the other.

Hector Cuper made three switches at the start of the second half, bringing on Adani , Lamouchi and Karagounis for Materazzi , Emre and Ventola .

And the substitutes were immediately in the thick of the action. Adani slotted into his customary position in the centre of defence and had his work cut out as Galatasaray applied the pressure. Their best chance fell to De Boer, who incredibly missed with a first-time left-footed shot from four yards out. Inter then gained in composure and Lamouchi showed off his firepower with an insidious, low shot from the edge of the box which had Mondragon at full stretch. Karagounis hesitated slightly before firing the loose ball across the face of the goal.

Andy van der Meyde went off to applauses from his old fans in the 62nd minute, giving way to the young Mario Rebecchi . Martins grabbed his and Inter's second in the 66th minute. He shook off a weak challenge from Tamas after latching onto a superb long ball forward from Adani then curled it round Mondragon and into the far corner. Oba Oba was brought down just outside the area a minute later by De Boer, his pace causing heaps of problems for the Turkish rear guard.

Mario Rebecchi was swamped by his team-mates when he stabbed home a loose ball from Karagounis ' free kick to make it a debut to remember and give the Nerazzurri a virtually unassailable lead. But it was a birthday to forget for Hasan Sas, who was booked for a blatant foul on Luciano then later sent off for barging into Almeyda .

Luciano was replaced in the 71st minute by Okan , and the ex-Galatasaray player's first real involvement in the game almost led to Martin's third goal: his right-wing cross was half cleared then the Nigerian shot just wide of Mondragon's right-hand post with a left-footed thunderbolt which finished wide.

The Nerazzurri take on Andy van der Meyde's former club Ajax on Sunday.

Rangers 0-3 Arsenal

Edu 32
Lauren 48
Campbell 59
Pre-season friendly

Edu, Lauren and Sol Campbell grabbed the goals as Arsenal recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox.

Lauren also had a penalty saved as the Gunners dominated the final hour following the false dawn of a strong start from Alex McLeish's men.

Gers midfielder Mikel Arteta and almost opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Arsenal's new goalkeeper Jens Lehmann allowed a free-kick from deep on the left to strike his near post.

Lehmann did much better to deny Arteta 10 minutes later, making a spectacular parry after Michael Ball had touched a free-kick to the Spaniard, with Lauren having been initially punished for a high boot in Peter Lovenkrands' face.

Arsenal had offered little in return but took the lead in the 32nd minute through Edu's long-range effort, although it needed a hefty deflection off Maurice Ross to leave goalkeeper Stefan Klos helpless.
The FA Cup winners' confidence increased and they finished the half strongly with Francis Jeffers and Lauren both going close in a spell of concentrated possession.

A good chance came Steven Thompson's way before the break when fellow Scotland international Ross picked him out in the box but instead of heading goalwards he elected to chest the ball down and Lauren nipped in at the crucial moment.

Arsenal sent on former Rangers favourite Giovanni van Bronckhorst for Ray Parlour on the restart and within two minutes Patrick Vieira had won a penalty when he went down under a Bob Malcolm challenge.

Lauren had little difficulty in beating Klos from the spot to double his side's lead.

Rangers substitute Michael Mols, who had gone on for Lovenkrands, forced a save out of Lehmann with a smart shot on the turn.

But the home defence was missing at the other end when Campbell rose to head a Dennis Bergkamp free kick emphatically past Klos.

The German came out on top in the 78th minute by saving another Lauren penalty after Craig Moore had kicked Fredrik Ljungberg over in the box, with the Australian shown a yellow card.

Then Klos denied late substitute Jeremie Aliadiere with a fine parry as the Gunners pressed right to the end.

Aberdeen 1-5 Liverpool
Zdrilic 1 Murphy 11
Heskey 50
Kewell 56
Mellor 78, 86
Pre-season friendly

Harry Kewell grabbed his first Liverpool goal as they put their Dutch debacle behind them to thump Aberdeen.

The Aussie was one of 10 half-time changes as Gerard Houllier gave his entire squad a run-out on the back of their disappointing Amsterdam experience, that ended with no wins and two red cards.

The hangover from that saw the Dons take the lead after 60 seconds as Australian international David Zdrilic, on trial at Pittodrie, slotted past Chris Kirkland.

Liverpool pulled level when El Hadji Diouf and Milan Baros combined down the left and Danny Murphy volleyed home, but they did not have it all their own way as Florent Sinama-Pongelle missed a penalty before the break.

Then came the huge rehsuffle at half-time and within five minutes of the restart Emile Heskey continued his fine pre-season form by rifling home after being put through by Kewell, and the former Leeds winger coolly slotted home after taking Michael Owen's pass in his stride to make it 3-1.

Neil Mellor, sent off against Galatasaray on Sunday, then went some way towards making up for his indiscretion by scoring Liverpool's final two goals, following up Bruno Cheyrou's shot to score from close range and then tapping in after John Arne Riise's shot had been saved

Man. Untied were lump-ed for the first time by Sporting today. The final score was 3 - 1 and apparently it was very one-sided. Walks, anything to worry about yet now that Veron is officially gone?............

INTER 1 JUVENTUS 2 - CRESPO ON TARGET FOR NERAZZURRI
Friday, 08 August 2003 21:54:48
BARI – A sell-out 60,000 crowd at Bari’s San Nicola stadium saw Inter beaten 2-1 by Juventus in the opening match of tonight's Birra Moretti Trohpy.

Nerazzurri front men Vieri and Crespo were both caught offside in opening minutes as Cuper’s men took the initiative. But Juve took an 8th-minute lead through Camoranesi, who connected with a right-wing free kick into the middle of the box and powered a header past Toldo . Vieri was presented with a chance to equalise a minute later, his effort going just wide.

Cuper was forced to Andy van der Meyde with Pasquale after the Dutchman sustained a deep cut to his head in the wake of a challenge. Bobogol then had a goal ruled out for offside after volleying Crespo ’s assist past Buffon, then Di Vaio shot over the bar from two yards out. But the former Parma striker made no mistake when presented with a similar chance on 16 minutes, slotting past an out-of-position Toldo to put Juve 2-0 up.

The Nerazzurri reacted and Vieri had two chances in quick succession. He shot over the bar after meeting Pasquale 's long ball forward, then headed wide from Lamouchi ’s assist. Inter's reply came from Hernan Crespo in the second mini-half of the 45-minute match. The Argentina international beat his marker to poke Pasquale ’s superb left-wing cross in at the near post.

Inter face Sampdoria in the second match of the evening, with Juve to play the Genoans in the third and final game.
