A wee update from Irelands Saturday Night

PUBLICATION DATE: Saturday 23 Feburary

PORTS STORM CLEAR AT TOP

Coleraine collared but Glens and Blues keep up pressure PORTADOWN stormed to the top of the Premier Division with a sensational 3-1 win over title rivals Coleraine at the Showgrounds today.

Vinny Arkins, Kyle Neill and Stephen Douglas - his first goal for the club since joining from Larne in the summer - were the scoring heroes in a tense struggle.

And just to add to Coleraine's misery, Stuart Clanachan and Ian McCoosh were ordered off by referee Alan Snoddy.

All this excitement after Rory Hamill had given the home side the perfect tonic of a fifth minute lead.

Glentoran left it late at Seaview but scraped a 1-0 victory in the dying seconds.

New boy Andy Smith, signed only last week after his loan spell with Glenavon expired, was the saviour, toe-poking the ball home after a break by Mark Wright.

The strike brought huge sighs of relief from the Glens supporters and the manager Roy Coyle in particular.

Glentoran now sit alongside Portadown ahead of Coleraine, but the Ports have a superior goal difference.

Chris Morgan saved Linfield's blushes at Windsor Park.

He equalised a 10th minute strike from Ards' Peter Lowry right on the half-time whistle, then produced the winner after the break.

The win puts Linfield on 49 points, just two adrift of the leaders.

It was another disastrous day for Glenavon at home to Newry Town.

Gareth Fulton scored the only goal of a wind and rain lashed game at Mourneview Park 16 minutes from time.

The defeat was Glenavon's fourth in succession in front of their home fans.

Colin Malone's side, in fact, have only won one of their last 12 home games.

The other Premier League game between Omagh Town and Cliftonville was post poned.

In the first division Institute's title chal lenge was slowed down by a 2-1 home defeat by Dungannon Swifts.

But Ballymena United strengthened their promotion hand with a 3-2 home win over Carrick Rangers.

Armagh and Bangor drew 1-1 while the games between Limavady and Ballyclare, and Larne and Distillery were called off.

Rangers Agree Pre-season Match With Linfield

By Barry Anderson

RANGERS have agreed to cross the Irish Sea this summer for a prestigious friendly with Northern Irish side Linfield.

Alex McLeish will take his team to Northern Ireland for the first time in 18 years to take on David Jeffrey’s men on Tuesday, July 30 at Windsor Park.

The kick-off time has still to be confirmed but club is delighted to be able to take the players to the North for a long overdue visit.

A team of Rangers legends including Andy Goram, John Brown and Graham Roberts played Linfield in Belfast last May in front of a staggering crowd of over 10,000.

However, this will be the first time the Ibrox top team has appeared in Northern Ireland since 1984, when an own goal and strikes by Ally McCoist, Sandy Clark and Derek Ferguson ensured a 4-0 win, also against Linfield.

The Windsor Park outfit are unofficially known as the Rangers of Northern Ireland therefore it is expected the game will be a complete sell-out.

Ibrox representatives attend Northern Ireland regularly and sit on a forum with supporters’ club delegates who have been pushing for a fixture like this for the last few years.

Commercial director Martin Bain said: "It’s great to that we will be taking the first team to Belfast.

"I recently sat down with Alex McLeish to organise the pre-season itinerary and I stressed to him the importance of the support we have in Northern Ireland.

"We receive tremendous loyalty and backing from fans over there who have to undertake a lot of travelling to follow the team, so this match is for them."

Absolutely magic!!! I might need a wee vacation back to Windsor Park;)

This is fcuking brilliant. However, the game should be played about 18 days earlier. This way, they could come over and take part in setting bonfires and blocking traffic for a couple of days, with meaningless parades. Or else they could just parade down the Falls Road, followed by an excursion up to Ballymurphy. I'm sure they would be welcomed with open 'arms'........

Celtic will be playing in a benefit match against AC Milan. I guess that is the difference between a first and second place team. The second place team gets to go the worst area in Belfast and Celtic goes to New York to play in front of 80 000 people, raising money for the 9/11 disaster fund......
