It has been almost a year now, but just in time for Christmas, here are the holiday edition 2017-2018 Sir M's Excellent Power Rankings. Carry on as if normal.
1. West Van FC M (VMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This side seems to be in a nasty mood this year and an infusion of youth has paid dividends so far; something SCDMTC Blond may do well to emulate. Currently undefeated and ten points clear at the top of the table in VMSL Masters Premier at the break.
2. Coquitlam Metro Ford PCE (VMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). The reigning VMSL, BC and Western Canadian champions are having a good year, but have struggled early on with too many draws, and have lost but once this season. They have proven particularly effective this year at running the score up on weaker teams. Currently third spot in VMSL Masters Premier, having defeated Westside in their last fixture.
3. Westside FC M A (VMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This side was unceremoniously bumped from a second spot in these rankings by the reigning BC Champs on their home turf last week. Ten points back of first with five games to play, few people in the Western Hemisphere, save for Dancing Bear, believe that they can catch West Van at the top. Some new and not so new blood have bumped them up a notch this year however, and they will be a force in the BC finals. Currently second place in VMSL Masters Premier.
4. Gorge FC Backfill (VISL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). Staff member Gordon Head is reporting that despot Shell Brodsdgaaard has dictated, in a move similar to participation trophies, that the VISL will no longer keep standings, but will rather keep rankings of their own: excellent. Currently top of the heap it appears on the Island.
5. Port Moody Rangers FC (FVSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). A much improved and more dedicated FVSL Port Moody entry tied for first spot in the FVSL and is a side that appears to be on the ascendency. Backed by FVSL's own little Napoleon, they should be a force in the BC playdowns.
6. North Delta SC Rangers (FVSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This Rangers team is used having their way in the Valley. But we are not discussing animal husbandry on this thread. Still top of the table, they are being seriously threatened by their Rangers rivals from the shore of the inlet. Which, by the way, is not in the Fraser Valley. They will be there in the BCs, staff predict.
7. UVic Alumni (VISL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This perennial VISL powerhouse is hoping for a better second half of the season, as they are currently ten points adrift of Gorge, albeit with three games in hand. Staff have had their BC ferries revoked, so any information from the Island would be appreciated.
8. Columbus FC M A (VMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). Columbus at least accordingly to some of the punters on the VMSL Masters 2017-2018 thread, can boast some of the very best players in the VMSL Master's Premier division, where they sit in fourth spot at the break . This team does score their share of goals, and likes to score early, but still leak at the back. Not dissimilar to Rangerforever come Boxing Day morning actually. They are hoping that their recent goalkeeper signing will shore things up going forward:
9. SFC Temple United A (FVSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). Temple is actually tied with the ranked Port Moody just one point out of first place in the FVSL. However, the Templars did not have Thomas Mills send any Christmas pudding Sir M's way; albeit with a bite or two missing. They hope to do much better in the BCs this year.
10. EDC FC Burnaby M (VMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). EDC were just granted a spot in the VMSL Master's Premier division this year. But of course the VMSL is a clear and transparent league, and all rules apply equally to everyone. And there are no players paid in the league either. Fifth spot at the break, but first place in diving, spitting, feigning, and pinching. And getting cold. They will be in a battle for the final VMSL BCs spot come this spring.
11. Croatia SC M A (VMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). Croatia has been inconsistent thus far this year, possibly due to hygiene. They are usually right in the hunt come the Provincials, so they should come out strong in the new year.
12. Roma FC (PMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This team sits in top spot at the break in the Burnaby league. Contrary to popular opinion, this side is not from Rome. It looks like the #15 ranked Wanderers could give them a run for the money for the league title over there.
13. Romanian FC M (VMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This side cannot beat anyone this year other than VUFC and West Van. Last spot (eighth) in VMSL Masters Premier at the break and with work to do.
14. Vancouver United Rangers M A (VMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This side is actually, now that they have overcome a tendency to tell on opposing team's coaches for consuming alcoholic beverages outside of licensed areas, has grown into a fairly legitimate side in staff's view. Their recent loss to #13 ranked Romania is a setback, but the continuing struggles by PCOV and the Flying Horses keep them out of the relegation zone in the VMSL at the break. Currently eighth spot in VMSL.
15. Wanderers FC (BMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This side, at 11-0-0, is the only unbeaten and untied side at this point of the campaign featured in these rankings. If they can address a tendency to like to roam around, they could be BMSL Champions and contest for the BC Masters B Cup come spring.
16. Portuguese Club of Vancouver M A (VMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). Believe it or not, this team was VMSL Masters Premier league champs in 2016. Although always a team that suffers from irregularly and gas, they are having particular struggles this season, possibly due to the fact that they have added a couple of real prizes in the back. Currently in ninth spot in VMSL Masters Premier.
17. Surrey United SC M A (FVSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This is a team full of players who switch clubs, a team that switches leagues on a routine basis, with a few players that like to play the back nine. Fourth spot in FVSL.
18. West Van FC Flying Horses (VMSL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). The Horses remain in these rankings this week, mainly due to the fact that they finally got a win recently over PCOV. Then they got hammered 7-1 by Columbus the following week, however. They will need a minor miracle in the new year to climb out of the relegation zone. Tenth spot in VMSL.
19. CB Red Barn Bobcats (VISL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This team sounds like a bunch of hicks.
20. VicWest H2X (VISL) (last week's ranking: not ranked). This team is named after a rare heavy water isotope. They may qualify for the BCs.
So that is it for today, Merry Christmas to the hundreds of rankings followers out there. See you in 2018.
