Thu, September 09:

A late goal off a free kick by Brian Coyne broke a scoreless tie and propelled Sonoma State University to a 2-0 win over Simon Fraser University in a men’s soccer game Thursday at Swangard Stadium. The rest of the article:

Coyne notched his fourth goal of the season in the 74th minute when he took a free kick from 25-yards out and directed straight into the Simon Fraser goal past keeper Reagyn Hall (Victoria). The Sea wolves struck again 10 minutes later when forward Tim May**** tapped in a pass in the penalty area for his fourth of the season. Midfielder Mike Nathan did most of the work on the goal, racing down the left wing before bending a low cross onto the foot of Nathan alone in front.

The win kept Sonoma State unbeaten at 3-0-1.

SFU, which out shot the visitors 9-6 and had an advantage in corner kicks at 7-5, had two good scoring chances by forward Andrew Corazza (Coquitlam) in the first half that were stopped by goalie Clark Rupp and kept the teams tied heading into the break. Corazza, who has scored nine goals in the first five games, was stopped on shots from in close on diving saves by Rupp both times. Corazza registered five of the Clan’s nine shots on goal.

Rupp made four saves while Hall stopped two for the Clan.

“We competed well and deserved something from the game,” said Clan coach Dave Elligott. “We had three or four good chances in the first half but their goalie made terrific saves and that came back to haunt us.”

Defender Justin Dudley (Bellingham, Wa) and midfielder Aaron Beattie (Port Moody) picked up yellow cards in the game.

The next game for SFU is Saturday September 11 at 4:00 pm against Linfield College in Portland, Oregon.

Clan hands UBC third straight loss

October 6, 2004 NAIA 11th ranked Simon Fraser University got two goals from Andrew Corazza and one each from Robbie Cairns and Justin Carvery to beat the CIS No. 5 ranked University of British Columbia 4-0 Wednesday in a men's exhibition soccer game at Thunderbird Stadium.

It was the third straight win for Simon Fraser over the Thunderbirds but UBC still leads the all-time series 9-8-4.

Simon Fraser won for the fourth straight game to improve its record to 8-2-0. It was also the fourth straight shutout for the Clan, who has out scored its opponents 15-0 during the win streak. SFU allowed just three shots on goaltender Raegyn Hall, who made one save to pick up his fifth shutout of the season.

"We had to be at our best (tonight) even though it wouldn't appear so by the scoreline," said Clan coach Dave Elligott. "UBC was constantly a threat and I never felt secure with the game until the last few minutes."

"I thought the play of our backline was disciplined and defenders Justin Dudley (Bellingham), Vince Peragine (Coquitlam), Vince Stewart (Delta) and Leigh Sembaluk (Regina, SK) were very good."

Corazza was dangerous all night and scored in the 32nd and 82nd minutes for his fifth multiple goal game of the season and the fourth straight game he has scored. The junior striker from Coquitlam now has 16 goals in 10 games.

Freshman midfielder Carvery (Whalley) opened the scoring for SFU with his second of the season in the 11th minute while captain Cairns (Rotherwick, England) notched his fourth of the season and his third in four games in the 79th minute. Sembaluk had two assists on the goals by Carvery and the second by Corazza.

UBC fell to 3-2-1.

Simon Fraser, 4-1-0 at home this season, hosts Western Washington University in its next game on Wednesday, October 13 (2 p.m.) on Terry Fox Field.

Clan Upset in Regional Semifinal

November 5, 2004 PORTLAND, OR -- Simon Fraser University gave up an own goal midway through the second half and then Warner Pacific College hung on to upset the Clan 1-0 Friday in the NAIA Region I Championship semifinal in Portland, Oregon.

Warner Pacific will meet Evergreen State College in the final after Evergreen upset Concordia University 4-2.

The NAIA 10th ranked Clan had entered the regional tournament as the top seed but Friday's loss left SFU with only a slight chance of getting an at-large entry into the 20-team NAIA national championship tournament later this month. Simon Fraser, 11-5-1, will have to wait to see if it is awarded one of the 5-7 at-large entries given to the highest ranked teams unable to win their way into the national championship tournament. The Region 1 champion gets an automatic berth.

Simon Fraser was the two-time defending NAIA Region 1 Champion.

Warner Pacific forward Trevor Tharp was awarded the goal in the 60th minute but it was the Clan's Jordan Rosenlund (Langley) who accidentally put the ball into his own net. Warner put a through ball into the penalty area and Rosenlund attempted to intercept it but instead knocked it past Clan goalkeeper Raegyn Hall who was playing the pass and caught by surprise.

Simon Fraser pressed for the equalizer and senior captain Robbie Cairns and midfielder John Chou both hit posts but Warner was able to hold on for the win. SFU out shot Warner 17-11 and forced WPC goalie Cameron Marvin into six saves.

"We struggled to find our legs and we were out of sink right from the start,"said Clan coach Dave Elligott. "I was hoping we would play ourselves into the game but Warner made things difficult and they had a game plan that frustrated us.

"We had a number of quality chances and I was disappointed we were not able to score because there were some good opportunities," continued Elligott. "We had three or four chances early in the match and if we had made any of those it would have been a different game."

"Any time you get into the playoffs you need a little bit of luck too, but I don't think we had any luck on our side with the number of chances we missed," said Elligott.

So did they get an at-large-entry or not. After all the years they have got screwed around with going to Nationals, they do deserve it.

Clan get a second chance

Looks like Revolutionary and the Clan get another shot at it .....

The Simon Fraser University men’s soccer team has been given new life after the Clan received an at-large entry to the NAIA national soccer championship that begins Wednesday in Olathe Kansas.

Simon Fraser, which was upset 1-0 by Warner Pacific College in the NAIA Region I Championship semifinal on November 5, was awarded one of six at-large entries to the national championships and will enter the 20-team tournament as the No. 5 seed.

With its top-12 seeding SFU received a first round bye and will play 12th seeded Baker University of Kanas in the second round of the tournament on Thursday, November 18 at 1:00 pm (Pacific Standard Time). The Championship Final is Tuesday, November 23rd at 5:30 pm (PST).

“We are absolutely delighted to have been selected and we are grateful for the opportunity to carry on our season,” said Clan coach Dave Elligott. “We approached the regional championship with the mindset we had to win to move on but we’ve been given a second chance. The players are absolutely thrilled and they are intent on making the most of this opportunity.”

Simon Fraser was ranked No. 10 in the final NAIA ratings and compiled an 11-5-1 record this season. Based on the quality opponents the Clan played and its success, the Clan jumped up in the tournament seeding to No. 5 and received a first-round bye. The Clan will have to win four games to capture the NAIA national title.

“Our philosophy at SFU is to schedule the most competitive opponents we can in order to challenge our team and force our players to be at their best at all times,” said Elligott, the fourth-year coach who has directed the Clan into the national tournament three straight years. “Obviously the tournament organizers respect that philosophy and it’s reflected in our seeding.”

This year Simon Fraser played top-ranked NCAA Division 11 teams Sonoma State, Seattle University and Seattle Pacific University.

Simon Fraser has won the national title twice, in 1983 and 1984, finished second three times and third four times. In 2002 the Clan placed fifth, defeating Baker University 1-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Several current Clan players were on that team, including leading goal scorer Andrew Corazza (Coquitlam), captain Robbie Cairns (Rotherwick, England) and defenders Vince Peragine (Coquitlam) and Justin Dudley (Bellingham, Wa) and goalkeeper Raegyn Hall (Victoria) among others.

Baker University will enter the tournament as the NAIA Region 5 champion with a 14-3-3 record. Baker was ranked 21st in the final NAIA ranking, although it was ranked seventh in the second-to-last week of the regular season.

Corazza enters the tournament as the Clan’s top scorer with 20 goals in 17 games while Cairns is second on the team with five goals and five assists and Ljubomir Acimovic (Burnaby) had six goals during the season.

Corazza Scores Four to put Clan in Quarterfinals

November 19, 2004 OLATHE, Kan. -- Junior striker Andrew Corazza of Coquitlam scored four goals to lead Simon Fraser University to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Baker University (Kansas) in the second round of the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship in Olathe, Kan.

No. 5 seed Simon Fraser will now face No. 4 seeded Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) in the quarterfinal round Saturday at 5:15 pm (PDT). Auburn was a 5-2 winner over Park University (Montana) on Thursday.

After Corazza struck first in the 22nd minute, Simon Fraser gave up three straight goals within a 14 minute span to fall behind 3-1, 37 minutes into the contest. Baker senior midfielder Davy Phillips fired back a minute after Corazza's first goal to even the score at one. Baker scored the next two goals on shots from sophomore forward Marty Johnston in the 24th minute and sophomore forward Shaun Nicklin in the 37th minute.

"There was a spell for about five minutes where we were a little disorganized in the back end and they took advantage of it," said Clan head Coach Dave Elligott. "Baker's first goal was a little lucky but their second came straight through the heart of our defence."

Corazza was pulled down in the penalty area in the 39th minute and he made no mistake on the penalty kick, bringing the Clan to within one heading into halftime. "That was a big goal for us because momentum turned on that play, and although we were down a goal, we certainly had momentum on our side," said Elligott. "In the second half we just laid it all on the line and fought for our lives."

Corazza scored in the 61st minute on a pass from senior midfielder and captain Robbie Cairns to tie the game. Corazza put the game away in the 77th minute after intercepting a misdirected goal kick just outside the Baker box and blasting a shot from 18-yards out past Baker goalkeeper Bret Clark.

"Both teams played full out and didn't hold anything back," said Elligott. "Everyone played their hearts out."

The four goals puts Corazza in a tie for the tournament goal-scoring lead with Saidi Issac of Park University, who scored four times in two games before being eliminated from the tournament. Corazza now has 24 goals in 18 games this season, equaling his own freshman mark and the third highest single-season goal-scoring total in Clan history. Ken Whitehead, who scored 28 goals in 1976, holds the SFU single-season goal-scoring record.

Simon Fraser, who qualified for these championships as an at-large entry, has won the national title three times, in 1976, 1983 and 1984. SFU has finished second three times and third four times.

Quarterfinals - Saturday, November 20 ALL TIMES PACIFIC

Clan Eliminated at Nationals

November 20, 2004 OLATHE, Kan. -- No. 4 seed Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) defeated No. 5 seed Simon Fraser University 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Saturday at the College Boulevard Activity Center in Olathe, Kan.

Auburn Montgomery dominated offensively, but the Senators were unable to score until 35 seconds left in the first half. Sophomore forward Hjortur Hjartarsson scored on a perfect pass from senior midfielder Masego Ntshingane to put the Senators up 1-0 at the half.

Simon Fraser junior forward Andrew Corazza (Coquitlam), coming off an impressive four goal performance against Baker University (Kan.), hit the crossbar off a header six minutes into the second half. It was the Clan's best chance to score and one of three shots on goal by Corazza.

Simon Fraser was out shot 19-7 in the game and Auburn Montgomery also had the edge in corner kicks, 7-2.

Corazza received a red card in the 71st minute, giving AUM the advantage. Just six minutes later Simon Fraser goalkeeper Raegyn Hall (Victoria) was called for a foul in the box. SFU senior defender Vince Peragine (Coquitlam) argued with the official and was ejected, leaving the Clan two men down and little hope of a comeback. Hjartarsson converted the penalty kick to seal the 2-0 victory for the Senators. He tops the tournament scoring list with five goals.

Auburn Montgomery improves to 19-4-0 and advances to the semifinals where it will face No. 1 seed Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) Monday at 6 p.m. Simon Fraser finishes its season 12-5-1.

They had a great year, Good luck to the team in the off-season.

Six Players Named All-Stars

December 7, 2004 -- Senior captain Robbie Cairns, scoring leader Andrew Corazza and defender Vince Peragine were each named all-stars for the third straight year as Simon Fraser University placed six players on the NAIA Region 1 All-Star team announced today. All six players also received NAIA All-American Honourable Mention honours.

The six SFU players named to the all-star team were the most of any school in the region. Cairns, Corazza (Coquitlam) and Peragine were joined on the team by senior defender Justin Dudley (Bellingham), making his second straight appearance, senior goalkeeper Raegyn Hall (Victoria) and junior midfielder John Chou (Vancouver), who were selected all-stars for the first time.

Cairns, a senior midfielder and team captain from Rotherwick, England, played in every game this season for the Clan and finished second on the team in scoring with five goals and five assists. Corazza scored a team-high 24 goals in 19 games, equaling his own freshman goal mark and the third highest single-season goal-scoring total in Clan history. Ken Whitehead, who scored 28 goals in 1976, holds the SFU single-season goal-scoring record.

Peragine, Dudley and Hall helped the Clan post seven shutouts and a 0.70 goals against average this season. Chou, a former Canadian Colleges Player of the Year, played all 19 games and was an integral part of a Clan team that posted a 12-5-1 record and made it to the NAIA national championship quarterfinals.

So where are all the kids going to play for Winter Ball?
