Not that many people give a damn about the Lions or CFL for that matter...

This is still big(ish) news locally.

End comes sooner than expected for Casey Printers

Wow! Not many people care about the lions? I know you didn't just move here jbn so what does this mean: your out of touch? I don't know? Anyway printers was cut for bitching out his reciever, on live tv, after the game? Not because he threw the interception that lost the game. What a punk, people who bitch people out for making mistakes have a silverspoon up their ass: nobody is perfect.

@ Arthur:

The CFL is a niche sport offering in Canada. The NFL's ratings in Canada kill the CFL's.

When you go into sports bars, do you see CFL Fantasy Pool stats on the walls? No. Do you have a CFL Fantasy League Team? No. Why not?! Because largely: People don't care. The stats are there, you can run a league... people don't because they are indifferent to the CFL.

TSN has kept two things running... The World Junior Hockey Championships and the CFL. If not for TSN, these two things would have died a slow painfaul death eons ago.

Do I enjoy watching the CFL from time to time? Of course, I actually prefer the rules and field size to that of our Big Brothers to the south. Would I pay any amount of money to go watch a game live on my own dime? Hells No. Why would I watch guys that literally suck skills wise against the guys on TV all day sunday and Monday night?

A League where One owner owns 25% of the teams is laughable. (I can't figure out which is worst optics wise, saying Braley owns 2 of 8 or 25%) :p
A League where you have a one in 8 chance of winning the championship is laughable.

The CFL only exists because the NFL Crippled the European Market by trying to force it's product down the throats of football-proper fans and the economic disaster killed the second rung leagues and indoor football leagues coupled with TSN's constant selling of the game to Canadians as a something more than it really is.

I honestly hope it survives for Canadian Heritage etc, but I'm not a huge fan.

I honestly see the MLS as a huge threat to the CFL as Vancouver and Montreal will be there soon in the MLS and Toronto already doesn't give a shite about the CFL. The CFL is strongest in the middle of Canada, where no money (Alberta aside) or corporate sponsors (Alberta aside) exist. Regina, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Hamilton cannot keep the league afloat, what will they ever do should David Braley pass away?

I have to agree...CFL sucks. I have tried to be a fan but just when you think you know your team and have players that you like to watch they are gone in the off season to another team? Hard to be a fan of they Jersey only!

And both those guys BECAME stars in the NFL... after playing in the Minors... :D

Back in the day, 60's, 70's when the dollar and economies were good in both countries, the CFL had some talent...

Once the colour barrier came down in the states the NFL quickly took off past the CFL.

Don't forget about Stefan Logan! :D

Couldn't you easily make the same argument for the MLS? Why would you watch the whitecaps "guys that literally suck skills wise against the guys on TV all day" From anywhere else? Wasn't it just a few years ago that several MLS teams were owned by Kraft?

It's my understanding that (excluding the Toronto situation) the CFL is the most stable it has been in years, with rumours of expansion. BC, Winnipeg, Hamiliton Sask with new stadiums being built or planned.. Ottawa returning, and I believe there was a game hosted in Moncton that was a big success. In recent years both Quebec and Windsor have expressed interest in a CFL team as well.

I in no way support the argument that the CFL competes skill wise or in terms of excitement/big plays as the NFL, but it is a pretty stable league.

Just my 2 thoughts.

Stability is relative to what? I'd say the CFL should take major steps back budget wise and expand to city's like Kelowna/Kamloops, Saskatoon, Ottawa, Quebec City, St. John, Halifax etc and try for the 15-20k attendance mark at a reduced ticket stub cost.

They cannot carry on with the budgets and salaries they have now without Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto. Toronto hasn't been a good CFL City for a long time, Vancouver has been up and down and Montreal is doing well now. The David Braley goodwill fund/TSN Money won't last forever.

If MLS Goes boom here and in Montreal it could take away fans from the CFL. Die Hard throwball fans no, but the average joe-sixpack who views the Canucks/Habs as too expensive but the CFL/MLS as just right- price wise. The CFL is gate-driven.

As far as the MLS: It is what it is: One league over two countries. Comparing anything here to MLS should be comparing the current Whitecaps league to MLS... You cannot make the argument about TV though... NFL and CFL are primetime and Sunday Morning destination viewing. Soccer is only available during non peak hours on free tv and on expensive subscribers only TV channels live. Why? Because there's no sponsor money for it aside from Champions League and Euro and World Cups.

MLS is also just a mere extension of the NFL ownerships in a lot of American city's also, so no need to worry about it. and Soccer is again growing... throwball in this country relies on having good teams in their most important cities (Van, Mtl, Tor)

Wheres your evidence that the NFL ratings are much better than the CFL? All I see read and research is the opposite...

Evidence is non-existant/assumed.

Here's what you get imho: The CFL is smart by not trying to compete with the NFL and HNIC on TV. So they play Saturday afternoons and Friday nights for their big TSN Game broadcasts.

Now compare one game being broadcast at a time against the 3-6 games on at a time during Sunday morning, add the Monday nighter and Sunday nighter and who's league is being watched more? I'd guess that towards 4 million Canadians tune in to NFL week to week, whereas you might hit 1M for a single CFL Game.

The NFL having two games on at the same time is splitting the ratings, the Leagues ratings have to be much higher.
