Some big injury news upon the announcement of some awesome-looking opening playoff series.......

DENVER -- Colorado Avalanche star left wing Paul Kariya injured his right ankle late in the third period of Sunday's regular-season finale, putting in doubt his status for the playoffs.

Kariya went down with 2:21 remaining. He was tied up with Nashville Predators right wing Scott Hartnell, twisted his right leg while falling to the ice and had to be helped to the locker room.

Kariya did not return as the Avalanche lost 2-1 in overtime.

"We'll know more (Monday)," Colorado coach Tony Granato said. "Hopefully, it looked worse than it was. That's all we know."

The Avalanche host the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night in the opening game of the Western Conference quarterfinals.

Kariya, 29, battled a wrist injury in his first season with Colorado and totaled a career-low 11 goals and 25 assists in 51 games.

Associated Press
BOSTON -- Boston Bruins forward Joe Thornton couldn't say whether he will be able to play in the season finale on Sunday -- or the NHL playoffs, for that matter.

Speaking to reporters in the Bruins locker room after Boston lost to New Jersey 5-2 without him on Saturday, Thornton refused to give any information about his injury except to repeat the team's official line of "upper body injury.''

"It's pretty much the same as it was on Thursday," he said. "[I'm] a little concerned. Obviously, you want to go into the playoffs healthy."

Thornton said he would continue to ice the injury and test it Sunday before the Bruins play the Devils again. The game could determine whether Boston opens the first round at home or on the road.

Thornton left Thursday's game against the Washington Capitals after taking a slash to his right wrist and falling hard on the ice. Various reports have said Thornton's injury is to his wrist or his ribs.

Pressed on whether his arms are part of his upper body, Thornton said, "Anything from my waist up is my upper body."

Tack on the Peter Bondra "lower body injury" from last night (courtesy of Tie Domi) and you've got three important players who are in trouble for the opening round.

Colorado could be fcuked. I can't imagine they're at all happy about losing the division and having to face the Stars, all within a week's time.

All of the series look pretty impressive, with the possible exceptions being Detroit/Nashville and Tampa Bay/New York. I can't see the 8-seeds doing much damage in either of these cases, although Nashville could get into a offensive battle with the Wings - produce a few 5-4 and 6-3 scorelines. My guess is that Detroit will be on the winning end of most of them, mind you.

The Islanders are a mess with Yashin's temporary demotion to the 4th line. DiPietro has zero playoff experience. Their leading scorer was Trent Hunter. I guess the regular season record is worth noting, but the Isles don't really strike me as upset specialists.

Despite the good storylines with the two big all-Canadian first-rounders, the Colorado-Dallas series should be most compelling. What a matchup that is. There are lots of guys hanging around from the 1999 Western Conference final (when Mike Keane was killing the Avs in a Dallas uni) - Modano, Sakic, Foote, Matvichuk, Forsberg, Lehtinen, Zubov, Hejduk to name a few.

I don't think the St. Louis-San Jose series will be as boring as has been posted here - St. Louis were great to watch against Vancouver last season. They're a very physical team, tons of hitting.
